Teaching Aid.......2007-03-12
This book is a great teaching aid for drawing and the transition from drawing to print processes. Great examples of the simplicity of marks necessary to create a form or mood recognisable to all. It is as much about what is left out as it is about marks made. Very dark subject matter delt with in a sensite way, a must for all for teaching and inspiration.
Covering Kollwitz.......2006-11-13
This large-scale volume does a very nice job of covering many of Kollwitz's finest works...and at a very nice price, thanks to Dover Publications.
SEED CORN MUST NOT BE GROUND- NO MORE BABYKILLING.......2006-08-02
Kollwitz was hated and persecuted by Hitler for taking the underside of humanity. She presents the real effects of modern warfare upon our defenseless civilians women and children. She presents the weary face of defenseless despair under relentless attack. She is the face which must be seen, like the courageous and proud Frida Kahlo, yet hers too weary for pride and fierce resistance.

Pictures of Reality.......2000-04-23
Kathe Kollwitz shows real people dealing with the real problem of the Second World War. Her drawings are poignant reminders of the love and humanity that can exist in the midst of madness. She is also not afraid to show the horror of the war and the tolls it takes on its victims.

German Expressionist Woodcuts (Collections of Fine Art in Dover Books)
ASIN: 0300061684 |
Book Description
This richly illustrated book reassesses the life and work of the beloved German printmaker, draftsman, and sculptor K_the Kollwitz, portraying her as an innovative and virtuosic artist rather than as merely a chronicler of particular themes. It will serve as the catalogue for an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., from May 3 to August 16, 1992.
Customer Reviews:
Wide-ranging and informative.......2007-09-09
Kollwitz's lithographs captivate any feeling viewer. Until there's some way to render raw emotion on paper, especially the many different sorrows of war and poverty, her monochrome lithos approach that goal most closely. That makes it easy to forget her mastery of other media and other feelings, too. This book broadens a reader's view of this wonderful artist.
The cover image, "Female Nude with Green Shawl," starts to break the reader free from the easy stereotype of Kollwitz. It adds color to her commonly dark palette, and presents a simple celebration of womanly elegance. "Self-portrait laughing" and "Lovers" show that she could not only express joy, but depict different kinds of it. Woodcuts, etchings, charcoals, ink and wash, and wonderful pastels each display her drawing ability in different ways. "Tower of Mothers," "Mourning Parents," "Lovers," and other sculptures show her skill in bronze, granite, and plaster. Kollwitz's skills range far beyond what she's best known for, and this book helps us appreciate the breadth of that ability.
Given so many reproductions of her work, lovingly printed on bright, dense paper, a reader like me becomes easily distracted away from the helpful and informative text of the book. Three long essays, a catalog, timeline, and bibliography invite the reader to various kind of commentary, both in historical fact and in considered opinions. Her personal story as woman, mother, and artist as well as her work deserve attention; this gorgeous volume is a wonderful way to give her work and life some of the attention they deserve.

An Amazing, Infomative Book on the Life of a Dedicated Artist.......2007-02-24
I am slowly but surely collecting books on Kollwitz. One of my art professors compared what I was doing to her work and I have since become a nicely obsessed student of everything she did and I read everything I can get my hands on.
This book is one of the best. First of all, I didn't have to get out my German lexicon and second, the narratives that go along with the many pictures are full of detail that you don't get in the smaller books. One of the major improvements that you will see is in her work, "Woman with Dead Infant." In many books it appears that the woman's face is melting in to the child, but in Prelinger's narrative, you see much more detail of the nude, vulnerable woman and her child with little covering up his bones.
She has many works-- mostly lithographs-- in colour, which is a delight after havimg only seen her work in other books as black and white.
One of her works, "Man Kneeling before a Female Nude" shocked me by it's erotic overtones, just as "Self Portrait en face, Laughing" shocked me with it's joy.
Kollwitz was very much a versatile artist and this book shows that. Any fan of Kollwitz will appreciate the narratives that go with the pictures, and for anyone who isn't a fan-- this book will make them fans!
Beautiful.......2004-11-22
This is one of the most beautiful books to look at I have even owned - it is highly recommended. The line drawings are accompanied by text rich in information about this woman's life and inspiration. Plates are excellent.

If you have/read all the tintins.........Bad !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-03
Okay i'll tell you the truth i don't have this book but i searched inside it(the first few pages) and it's already HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! First i recomend if you don't have it buy:
1.Tintin in the Congo
2.Tintin and Alph Art
3.Tintin in the Lake of Sharks
4.Tintin in the Land of Soviets
Now the reason i say it shouldn't even be called "Tintin" are:
1.Tintin Smokes
2.Tintin doesent have something he has in EVERY tintin episode but not in this one is SNOWY!
3.THe Thom(p)sons or Professer Calculus isn't in here
4.Hey! Who ever thought of Captain Being Tintin's Uncle?
5.Captain has a wife
6.Tintin Shopliftited
7.Captain Doesn't live in Marlinspike hall
8.Can't this Author at least put in Bianca Castifiore, Jolyon Wagg,Genaral Alcazar,Chang or anybody from REAL Tintin novels.
So i say this Author should call it Breaking Free The Adventures of Daniels. Who Agree's with me,eh? So if you agree when you write your review write," I agree with Bashi-Bazouk500" okay, kiddo's cmon you Bashi-Bazouks c'mon!
I rated this one star cuz i couldn't put zero stars!!!!!!!!!!!
Not what you would expect.......2004-05-20
First off, this is not an authorized "Tintin" novel. Tintin and Captian Haddock are the only Herge characters to appear in this graphic novel. Essentially, it's an anarchist propaganda piece set in England. The artwork isn't as "sharp" and detailed as Herge's work, but it is rather well done.
Tintin and the Captian are blue collar workers who are fed up with the "invasion" of the upper class into their neighborhoods, the system's apparent lack of concern for the poor, corruption in high places and impotent labor unions. As they gather together with friends, neighbors and striking co-workers, they slowly organize into a nationwide movement that (at the novel's end) is on the verge of toppling the government.
When first published in 1989 and news of this book made the British press, then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was reportedly repulsed, and much of the Conservative press had a field day tearing it to shreads. The disaffected youth of Britian, however, made it into a best seller!
For Tintin completists, this makes an interesting addition to a collection.
For collectors of political agit-prop, this makes an unusual addition of "pop-culture hi-jacking".
For anarchists...well, you probably already have a copy, no?
Customer Reviews:
Not What it Appears to Be.......2006-04-21
I have studied Lowland Scots for about four years now (casually, not academically) and I can say this is the least favorite of any book I've purchased on the subject. If, like me, you are looking for a book to deepen your knowledge of Scots then I don't recommend it. If you are unfamiliar with Scots, you will stumble over the Scots words and will be frustrated to find there's no glossary.
Although there are some really funny bits, this is a selection of qoutes by Scots, not Scottish sayings, and it doesn't lend one drop of understanding of either the people or the language because in reality, anyone from any culture can come up with an insult or witty retort, and if it is not unique to the culture (as the title leads you to believe) then why bill it as thus? I see no point in making a collection of such if it doesn't shed light on Scottish culture at large. It doesn't help that most of the selections are obscure at best: does anyone reading this know who or why Lord Macaulay would have a reason to comment on James Boswell? Or Alexander Trocchi?
If you're familiar with Scots and looking to learn more, then don't purchase this book. It's not worth half the price for research. You're much better off looking up an old copy of News Out of Scotland or The New Complete Patter, a Glaswegian sampling of colloquialisms that will lend you a much better use to the language than this selection.
If you're not familiar with Scots and are interested in learning the dialect, then this is not the book for you. You're much better off with a book of Burns and a Scots dialect dictionary (kill twa birds with yin stone, I say) or for a quick read on Scottish sayings (both Scots and Scotland at large) then I suggest you buy Haud Yer Wheesht and Allan Morrison's other selections which are quick reads and will help you decipher those baffling colloquialisms.
If you're Scottish, then you may like it just fine as a collection of historical interest, but as a collection of insults, one would be better off with Acid Drop.
Book Description
Smoke (starring Harvey Keitel, William Hurt, Forest Whitaker, and Stockard Channing) tells the story of a novelist, a cigar store manager, and a black teenager who unexpectedly cross paths and end up changing each other's lives in indelible ways. Set in contemporary Brooklyn, Smoke directly inspired Blue in the Face, a largely improvised comedy shot in a total of six days. A film unlike any other it stars Harvey Keitel, with featured performances by Roseanne, Lily Tomlin, Lou Reed, and Michael J. Fox. Lulu on the Bridge (Auster's solo directorial debut, again starring Harvey Keitel, with Mira Sorvino, Willem Dafoe, and Vanessa Redgrave) opens with the accidental shooting of jazz musician Izzy Maurer during a performance in a New York club. Izzy is then led on a journey into the strange and sometimes frightening labyrinth of his soul. Both thriller and fairy tale, Lulu on the Bridge is above all a story about the redemptive powers of love.

Customer Reviews:
Stuff and fluff.......2007-08-22
Save your money. Stuffed with appendices of legislation pertaining to credit industry. Poorly written and worse editing with mispellings and repetition.
Falls short and instills fear of credit bureaus.......2006-07-09
The main idea of this book is that credit reporting is an unfair process to consumers and more legislation is needed to regulate the industry. The authors paint a grim picture of credit agencies and leads you to believe you should be afraid of them. First of all the book is severely outdated. The book falls short due to the amount of mis-information. For example, it convinces readers that anyone that requests their credit report can obtain one; it advises that credit reports are reviewed when a person applies to college and convinces readers that credit reports are so personal that they contain information about a person's grooming habits. LOL - come one, get serious! The book is outdated and at least half of it focuses on trying to teach readers how to manipulate the credit-reporting system to have correct data removed from a credit report. In addition, the book is full of contradictions. It claims that credit reporting is done to punish, even torment consumers and that it's unfair, but a few pages later, the authors state that the intricate system ultimately benefits consumers. Which is it?! It also suggest readers partake in illegal activity in order to obtain a credit report like the ones creditors receive. It tells them to pose as a landlord or employer. This is illegal! Unless you're a deadbeat with low morals, this book is not for you. I'd recommend The Insider's Guide to Credit Repair by K.E. Varner for more useful, practical advice.
This book should be $5.00 - its like a good pamphlet.......2006-02-05
This book was disappointing. Buying a book without being able to browse it beforehand makes it difficult to know if its what you want. If I would have been able to skim through this book prior to buying, I would not have bought it. It's not that it's bad, it's just that its not what I needed or the title implied. It is not a comprehensive book at all. The title "guerrilla" makes you think it will offer unique, aggressive, insightful, strategic, or uncommonly known tactics to attack your credit repair. It absolutely fell short of that. But what it does deliver is very detailed, easy to follow understanding of BASIC information (what credit is, how to contact the bureaus, what type of letters to send, etc.) It gives you a decent strategy on how to dispute items on your CR. A huge shortcoming for this book is that 100 pages of the 200 page book was given to printing the FCRA (fair credit reporting act). Helpful but a waste. Instead of giving us some "guerrilla tactics" for 100 pages, they print the act instead. If you are really trying to repair your credit and you need real life information and real "guerrilla" tactics then you MUST prepare yourself mentally (it can get legal, psychological and emotional) and use the vast amounts of FREE information and FREE resources available online. Try joining FREE online communities/forums. Avoid people capitalizing on your despair with over-priced credit repair books, credit repair kits, pay-for services (i.e. now bankrupt AmeriDebt) or other books where gazillionaires bloviate about how rich and debt-free THEY are. Good for you. People with poor financial situations and poor credit do need inspiration but people also need practical aggressive ways to get their backs from against the wall. In conclusion, you'd be better off researching online for a few weeks, seeking FREE professional opinions, or checking out books like this one from the library.
Sound Advice that Works but...........2005-04-25
Updating would be a good thing with recent changes in the FCRA. I read the reviews by others before I read the material myself. Seeing that other reviewers had looked into Bill Bauer who claimed to be an expert on the topic and gave a very negative review and I saw the book was sound raised my curiousity level and I Googled him as well. I think a new book about him would make fascinating reading. Please do not take the negative reviews seriously. They have an agenda.
what it boils down to.......2005-02-22
I am writing in response to someone who gave this book a bad rec. do to the book not telling him what the cb's use to calc your individual score. The fact is nobody knows. All 3 use their own system and they aint tellin. Besides many creditor will use other data on cb report, not just the score. best you can do is make sure cb info is correct and make all pmts by due dates.
