The Middle of the Shinma Wars.......2002-05-05
This is the fourth volume in the New Vampire Miyu manga, and as such, it right in the middle of the action that is going on. New readers are recommended to find the earlier books in this series if possible or at least find out what the backstory is before reading this volume. There is a paragraph in the opening of the manga that gives a summary of what happened in the last volume, but the summary still assumes that the reader knows who Miyu and Larva are and the backstory that surrounds them.
For those new to Vampire Miyu, this series started with Vampire Princess Miyu manga in which an eternally young girl vampire and her shinma servant must return the evil shinma (demons) to the dark. These are bittersweet tales about love, regret and death. The artwork is subtley beautiful and evocative.
New Vampire Miyu is a spin-off from the original works that details Miyu's adventures in the realm of the shinma themselves. There is war brewing between the eastern and western shinma, and Miyu is facing some deadly enemies. There are quite a few more characters to remember and political alliances to keep track of than the original series. There's more action and physical battles than in the original series. Nevertheless, the tone remains decidedly bittersweet and romantic.
The series very serious, without much humor. This probably won't appeal to the manga reader who likes a lot of mecha or violent action. Readers who enjoy this might also like Clover, which is another beautifully poetic manga series. My strongest suggestion with this book is to find the earlier volumes, it will make reading this book much more enjoyable.
Happy reading!

From the hippie joys and hazards of communal living to the conservative think-tank dinners in Washington, from his fear of the dark to his love of cars, P.J. O'Rourke takes us through the experiences which have shaped his irreverent attitude towards, well, just abut everything.
For readers unfamiliar with O'Rourke's humour, here are essays directed against all of his favourite targets; for those who are already fans, this book includes many previously unpublished pieces--it's the Portable P.J. for every library.
Customer Reviews:
Not the same side-splitting humor as Holidays in Hell.......2003-02-28
Much of P.J. O'Rourke's self-deprecating humor is funny, down-to-earth and insightful. But beware - when he writes in this manner he is joking on the level. So when you read the introduction to Age and Guile and see how low of an opinion he has of the material published in this book, TAKE HIS WORD FOR IT - THIS ISN'T VERY GOOD MATERIAL. If you're considering buying this book because you enjoyed P.J.'s other works, re-consider. This material earns at most an occasional, light chuckle and more frequently induces sleep. Some of P.J.'s other works, particularly Holidays in Hell, elicited much more appropriate reactions from this reader for a book with the word "humor" printed on the back cover. Several of P.J.'s travel essays from that book can be expected to cause the kind of painful laughter that makes it difficult to breathe, see or even stand, and in some readers will even cause loss of bladder control. So if you haven't read Holidays in Hell, then I recommend you buy that book instead of this one. Unless you're having trouble sleeping.

An insider's look at early Hollywood.......2004-10-28
Although this book is certainly based on his own experience and memories, Samuel Marx does a good job recreating behind-the-scenes doings during the Golden Age of American cinema, when many of the best films ever made were conceived and brought to fruition. As a California native whose mother grew up in this area during this time and rubbed elbows with a few of the greats, this gets me reacquainted with my own past. And far from being just "Tinseltown", Hollywood employed some of the great writers of that age, who cut their writing teeth on screenplays.

This Book is a Riot.......2007-02-24
I knew Gene Lester back in the days when we were both involved in a camera collecting club and I had personally seen some of his fabulous photographs of well known Hollywood personalities and celebrities. What a goldmine of material I and others kept saying to Gene - you need to publish this stuff. Well, here is the book. Out of print now and hard to find, this book is well worth the effort to acquire if you have an interest in seeing the human side of Hollywood during it's golden age. As the title indicates, these are snapshots of the famous and not so famous being just regular people. Not snapshots in the amateur sense though, the photographs in this book are most definitely professional grade. Highly recommended for any collector of photographs of Hollywood people. Oh yes, the stories. Many of the photographs have stories associated with them. This is a fun read too.

Book Description
The story of the greatest jazz concert ever
It has entered musical legend as simply “the Massey Hall concert,” the night in Toronto in May 1953 when five of the most creative and influential jazz musicians of all time took the stage together, for the only time in their lives: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach.
The event did not have auspicious beginnings. There was no rehearsal not even a sound check. A world heavyweight title fight on the same night meant the hall was less than half full. Charlie Parker turned up with a white plastic saxophone. But a tape machine was running, and the recordings of the concert became an album that has been reissued over and over again for nearly fifty years – sometimes entitled, with little exaggeration, The Greatest Jazz Concert Ever.
Quintet of the Year is the tale of that historic concert - but to fix its co-ordinates in history this groundbreaking book navigates decades of musical innovation and social change. Geoffrey Haydon traces the lives of these five jazzmen from their beginnings in music to the point where they boarded the plane to fly to Canada: the reckless excess of the world-famous Parker; the fragile and mercurial pianist Bud Powell; Gillespie, the high priest of bop; Mingus, the bassist from the West Coast; and Roach, the modern drummer supreme. And it follows their lives afterwards, whether to civil rights activism or tragically early death, to show how their stories dramatized for the world the condition of black artists in America.
At its centre, Quintet of the Year recreates the never-to-be-repeated occasion of that remarkable concert itself, from the backstage rows to the embarrassment of box-office receipts insufficient to pay the illustrious performers – and most importantly, the wonder of pieces like “Hot House,” “Salt Peanuts,” and “A Night in Tunisia” treated to the prodigious artistry of five of the finest American musicians of the twentieth century, for one night only.
Customer Reviews:
Why is this excellent book so overlooked?.......2006-05-27
At the heart of this brilliant book is the historical concert at Massey Hall, Toronto with Dizzy Gillispie, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Max Roach and Bud Powell. The author begins the book with bios of each man, tracing their musical evolution and significance in jazz up to the moment of the concert. After the incredibly detailed description of the concert, Haydon follows each player as they go their own way into jazz history.
Haydon is that rare sort of music writer who has an incredible technical grasp of his subject and is able to write about it passionately but without gushing effusion or mystification. His analysis of the music of the concert in particular is remarkably acute and perceptive. He writes about each man with great clarity and humanity. I found his narrative about Bud Powell particularly fascinating and well done.
He also devotes much space to describing the important recordings of the men prior to and after the concert in the same highly detailed fashion.
Wonderfully readable and informative, this book should be in the library of anyone interested in bebop in particular and jazz in general. Excellent stuff!

This "entrepreneurial classic" (CNBC) is now completely revised and updated-and available in a lower-priced paperback-to help new and recent entrepreneurs. It provides meticulously researched information on the latest tax laws and legislation that affect individuals and small businesses.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read a must for any Professional........2007-03-08
Inc. Yourself, should be read by anyone who is a sole proprietor, or anyone wishing to start their own business. The author explains the different types of Corporations, and which one you would chose based on your needs. She has many examples and forms. She also covers all 50 states in her Index. Once again this is a must read by anyone who has their own business and hasn't incorportated yet.
Not enough information about what to do after you're incorporated........2007-02-12
I own a very small business--right now I'm the only employee. I cannot afford to retain an attorney for every little question I have. I bought this book in the hopes that it would tell me what to do each year to manage an s-corp. Not manage in the day to day business sense, but the forms, the "meetings" where you are supposed to keep minutes (it seems kind of stupid that a one person business is required to do this), the contracts that you're supposed to make with yourself if you borrow money from yourself, etc.
It addressed none of these questions. It basically told me everything I already knew and paid through the nose for with my ex-friend attorney. (yes, she's my ex-friend because I hired her for my incorporation process).
Perhaps this book would be helpful if you are in the very, very beginning stages of even thinking about incorporating.
Basically, the main points are to talk to your accountant about which type of entity would be best for you. I think you can find most of the information provided in this book on websites.
But as far as maintaining your corp, I still haven't found a good resource and I'm not about to hire another attorney.
Excellent pros & cons of incorporating.......2005-11-26
I read an earlier edition of this book and lent it to a few different people (the last didn't return it). I am buying another copy for myself to keep and one to lend. It's that good.
Not for an Amateur..........2005-09-19
I bought this book with the hopes of getting a good step by step introduction as to how to start my own Inc. business. Turns out the author's presentation was way out of my league and was geared toward people who already have an established business. This book is mostly about the tax benefits a a established business would get if it Incorporated itself....This isnt a "How To-Getting Started" Book for people wanting to start their own business for the first time. Also, too many figures and too many numbers, and the language used was very complex...the type of language people would get their lawyers to interpret for them.
However, I did get something out of this book, and that is to start a corporation, the pros and cons of each type of corporation, and the do's and don'ts. It's not a How to do...so I would recommend reading a book on HOW to start your own business, and then once you know how to, then read Inc. Yourself.
Overall, it was worth the read.
How did this get to be called "a classic?".......2005-02-19
I really do not know why this is in it's 10th edition or on it's 25 anniversary. I purchased the book thinking it would be a useful introduction to the benefits of incorporation and guidance for the benefits / drawbacks to each form of corporation. The discussion is more suitable for someone with significant exposure to corporate structure who is looking for fine tune their strategies - perhaps an accountant or a tax attorney. While I (a physician) could often understand what the author was trying to communicate, I found her approach confusing.

More than two decades ago, when former Wall Street portfolio analyst Judith H. McQuown first sat down to write the inaugural edition of Inc. Yourself, the incorporation of a small company was a fairly simple procedure undertaken by relatively few refugees from the then-burgeoning safe haven of big-time corporate America. But while the appeal and the underlying need for striking out on one's own have increased markedly in the interim, the continual passage of major tax-law changes has ensured that incorporation is no longer such an uncomplicated process. Accordingly, in this ninth edition of her bestselling primer, McQuown still outlines the core information necessary to turn any enterprise into a separate legal entity replete with all of the rights, privileges, and liabilities that such a move entails. But she also updates those suggestions for today's small businesses whenever appropriate, and bolsters them with important details on newly available options for pension plans, organizing the venture, and sheltering its income from taxation. --Howard Rothman

Customer Reviews:
Great information on How To Incorporate.......2004-03-05
This is one of the top three books on how to start your business and incorporate with the other two being Loopholes of the Rich and Rich Dad's Advisors: Own Your Own Corporation.
Another would be How To Incorporate in Any State: Everything You Need To Form a Corporation by W. Dean Brown.
On S Corporations, the best book I have found is S-Corporations by Robert Cooke.
Everyone that I know who is successfu in business is recommending these books. And for good reason, they work and are written by people who have actually been in the trenches and speak from experience.
Beware of certain [some] self publishers who have never had any real business experience and merely plagerizing the better authors such as those mentioned above.
An essential first read in starting your corporation.......2004-03-05
Before starting my business, I consulted with several successful business people that I knew. Aside from getting some great advice, all recommended this book as a essential first read before starting my corporation.
Now that I have read it, I agree and wholeheartily recommend it to anyone who wants to start a business and their corporation, correctly.
A good book to help you set up your corporation.......2004-03-05
I read the 8th edition of this book and got a great deal from it. Loaned it out, never got it back so back the newest edition. This is the book everyone else is copying. It's the best. Complete with forms and charts to help you get your corporation going.
I also recommend Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State and the Small Business Legal Kit, both by J.W. Dicks and Inc. and Grow Rich by C.W.Allen.
CAUTION: There are several books being put out by self publishers. These, some anyway are being promoted by paper tigers i.e. people who are writers only and have no real world experience. Much is outdated and the best of what they offer is in good quality books like this one and the others mentioned above.
Goff luck withyour business.
Lot's of good information in this book.......2004-01-03
Inc. Yourself provides a vast wealth of information on incorporating, the benefits you can get and why. Inc. Yourself is an easy read....pretty straightforward.
The fact that Inc. Yourself is now in it's 9th printing with more than 500,000 copies in print should tell you something about the great work done by Judith McQuown and the popularity of this great work.
As a companion to Inc. Yourself, You'll want to pick up a copy of Launch Business and Incorporate in Any State by J.W. Dicks and/or How To Incorporate in Any State by Brown.
This book deserves a solid five star rating and is highly recommended.
The Bible of Incorporating your business.......2004-01-03
I have read many books, talked to a lot of friends who started their own corporation and searched internet for tips. Without a doubt, Inc. Yourself is the "Bible" of Incorporating your business. Everyone that I know who is successful recommends this book. It is outstanding and will give you all the information you need to set up your corporation properly.
I want to caution you on the internet. There is some really bad advice with some people using the internet to hype their own books. Talk to someone you know who is in business. Check your local library and bookstore. HINT: If the book isn't available in the bookstores or your local library, it probably isn't worth your time.
If someone you know is a successful business person doesn't recognize a author, chances are the author is just a "paper tiger" with no real world experience.
I have not spoken with anyone who has not heard of Judith McQuown and everyone highly recommends her book.
