A Terrific Read.......2003-02-12
Death and Disaster: The Rise of the Warhol Empire and the Race for Andy's Millions by Paul Alexander. Now this is some book. Andy was a brilliant businessman who had the magic touch, though he was sad most of his life. At the time of his death his empire (not only art and collectibles, but vast real estate holdings and income properties nationwide) was 1/2 a BILLION dollars, second only to Picasso at 1 billion, and Andy died young. His soft and crafty management of the beautiful people, and then the tragedy of his death, and then the catastrophe of the jackals tearing apart his fortune (the lawyers got most of it) is a tale of sheer madness chronicled by a journalist who knew many of the principals and went to most of the trials - for years. Andy once tipped his hand: "A lady asked me what I loved most. That's when I started painting money."

Smutfest.......2007-01-16
Like his other book, 'Stainless Ladies', this feature beautiful models being rude with a variety of sex toys, all shot in black and white.
Whilst maybe not being art, it's creative and quite erotic (if you like looking at models with sex toys in their nether regions that is).
I like it.

Lupin the 3rd - The Secret of Mamo

Customer Reviews:
The Birth of Lupin III.......2007-09-17
My first introduction to Lupin III was way back in 1983 in a video game called Cliff Hanger. Stern Electronics had sliced up two Lupin movies (The Castle of Cagliostro and Mystery of Mamo) to create a videodisc game ala Dragon's Lair. In the game Lupin was the titular Cliff Hanger. Several years later I was reading a book on Manga and came across a strange character named Lupin III by Monkey Punch. I remember thinking how bizarre he looked with an eerie, maniacal grin plastered to his face. Still, I didn't recognize him as Cliff Hanger and it wasn't until years later when Castle of Cagliostro was released in the U.S. that all the pieces fell into place.
Volume 1 reprints the very first stories featuring to Arsene Lupin III published in 1967. The art is drawn to emulate the style of MAD Magazine contributor Sergio Aragones and it's a pretty good homage. My only complaint is that the drawings are so organic and loose that it's often difficult to figure out what is going on. Another problem is that it's hard to distinguish one character from another. Perhaps the biggest difficulty was discerning Lupin and Inspector Zenigata who appear as near twins in this book. Any fan of the Anime will recognize Fujiko for her freakish proportions but this was the way Monkey Punch drew all his women. When it comes to being a misogynist Monkey Punch makes Ian Fleming look like Dr. Seuss. All the women are absurdly top heavy, they all get their clothes ripped off and generally they are forced to submit to sex. Lupin is not intended for people with delicate sensibilities.
The only core character who doesn't appear in the first volume is Goemon although there is a near carbon copy named Koroshi who dies rather ignominiously. Jigen (spelled Gigen here) just sort of appears without explanation as a henchman for Lupin in one story but disappears for the rest of the book. Fans of Lupin may also be interested to know that the Gigen story features a character Paikaru who returns as the villain in the latest Lupin OVA `Return of the Magician' (c. 2002). Fujiko is in at least one story but again it's hard to tell Fujiko from the rest of the women because they all look the same. Zenigata is the only other character with a major presence in the book.
Unlike the Anime Lupin, the Manga is definitely geared for an older audience. Lupin is quick to kill and often takes woman by force. He still has that otherworldly almost inhuman way about him and the same whimsical attitude. Just as Bond fans owe it to them selves to read Ian Flemings book, Lupin fans ought to check out the original Monkey Punch stories.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Manic, comic strippy silliness. Occasionally a little hard to follow. Monkey Punch man obviously likes all his girls exactly the same, looks, build and level of sneakiness. Did not thrill me at all, I don't think I would bother with any more of these. I can't fault him on the former, but if he keeps falling for the latter?
Girls, Guns, and Fun.......2004-11-28
Lupin the Third is Japan's answer to James Bond. The only thing he likes more than a big payday [...]. Whereas Bond was a charismatic secret agent, Lupin is a charismatic non-so-secret gentleman thief. He is the world's greatest thief, seemingly able to escape from any predicament. His adventures are filled with comical antics and hilarious miscues. He chases after the women as much as the treasure and the former usually leads to a lot more trouble the latter.
Accompanying Lupin on his adventures are two loyal and faithful companions and one not so loyal companion. His close, personal friends Goeman, a samurai swordsman, and Jigen, a professional gunslinger, are usually responsible for pulling Lupin's butt out the crazy predicaments he gets himself into. His not-so-loyal companion and oft rival is the beautiful and devious Fujiko. She is the main object of Lupin's lust and responsible for a good number of the predicaments he gets into. Oddly enough, no matter how much she cheats him, he seems to love her that much more.
Rounding out the cast is the intrepid Inspector Zenigata. He is always on Lupin's tail, well actually, it's more like he's always a step behind. It is Zenigata's mission to one day capture the elusive Lupin and claim the respect he so rightly deserves.
This series is great, especially if you like James Bond type stories. The wit and humor are perfect for the style of story. The art effectively portrays the action as well as the body language and moods of the characters.
Note: Readers need to keep in mind that, while not explicit, this is not for children. Monkey Punch rates it for teenagers age 16+ and carries the "Parental Advisory" label.
too much sex.......2004-07-26
it was good manga. i enjoyed it but the sex scenes started to get a little tiring after a while.
Lupin the Great.......2003-06-21
Lupin the third is all about the greatest thief in all of Japan. As a master of disguise he can get away for the most troublesome positions in a matter of minutes. He is a man who staves for riches, women, and the hardest of chanllenges. Although the pictures are sometimes small and hard to read or make out, this is not a problem because it is very easy to adapt to. Note even though the rating of 16 this book is definitely not for children. This is a great book that many people will enjoy that are in age and that is mature enough to handle what is shown in the book.

Book Description
Monkey Punch's classic super-spy, Lupin III, returns in an all-new series of action, adventure and intrigue. Join Lupin and his fellow partners-in-crime, Jigen, Goemon, and Fujiko for a whirlwind, thrill-a-minute world tour filled with bombs and bombshells, lovers and liars, high crimes and misdemeanors, and the rest of the usual suspects that create the lunacy that is Lupin III.
Book Description
Was Homer really blind, or was that just his shtick? Was Dante a righty or a lefty? Why aren't there any pictures of Jane Austen in a bikini? What made Oscar so Wilde? How much did Hemingway? These are just some of the many great questions of Western literature ignored in this book.
From the author of A Prairie Home Companion's beloved "Five-Minute Classics" comes The Five-Minute Iliad and Other Instant Classics, a witty and profane lampoon of the Western literary canon -- the Spinal Tap of literature.
"I will never write such wordy trash again," Leo Tolstoy said of War and Peace after reading Homer in the original Greek. Tolstoy's pledge inspired humorist Greg Nagan to whet his double-edged verbal sword and offer this gleefully twisted take on what contemporary readings of the Great Books say about our society today.
From The Iliad to On the Road, these fifteen parodies provide a riotous romp through Western civilization (one version of it, anyway) from Homer to Kerouac, from Ancient Greece to Postwar America, from the Lyrical Epic to the Breathless Gush. Nagan's mirthful mayhem will delight those who've read the Great Books, and those who haven't read them will find these literary caricatures entertaining in their own right.

Cliff notes for smart alecks.......2006-11-11
I was at a restaurant tonight and there was a drunk guy at the bar talking very loudly to a woman about classic works of literature. His summaries were unintentionally very similar to the ones in this book. If Monty Python's "Gumby Cherry Orchard" sketch makes you chuckle, you'll probably find plenty to laugh at here.
If you don't laugh reading the first page, you need to go back to grade school.......2005-10-10
I found this book while browsing the university bookstore. It caught my eye and I couldn't help but wonder how the heck someone could condense the damn Illiad into about 4-5 pages. Reading the first page, I realized it was supposed to be funny (which by all means is good in my books).
The book except for a few parts is quite witty and sometimes outright hilarious (try to keep yourself from laughing on a crowded train... he makes it hard).
You do have to have read the books he's poking fun of however. Most of the books should have been used in any sensible english course but even if you know the jist of the story, you are good to go. Some things like the chapter on Ulysses are just downright clever (you will know if you read the book =) )
Read the quick and funny versions of the classics!.......2004-02-22
Did you skip Crime and Punishment, 1984, and Sense and Sensibility? Have you made it your personal goal to never read the Iliad? Then this book is for you. Nagan expertly cuts all the unimportant stuff out of the classics, shortens them so you can read them in only 5 minutes each (10 if you're slow like me), and adds a bit of humor so you actually want to read them. I tested my new familiarity with the classics by discussing The Iliad with a friend who was taking Great Books. She couldn't tell I'd never actually read it! This book allows normal people to learn the classics without actually reading them. The 5 Minute Iliad was hilarious and I feel 1000 times smarter after reading it. Now I can expertly discuss the plot from Dracula, The Old Man and the Sea, Catcher in the Rye and other boring classics. Whether you've completely unfamiliar with these novels or you'd like to just read the funny versions, The 5 Minute Iliad is the perfect book for you. Note: These stories are meant to humor you and offer you a very basic understanding of the classics. The 5 Minute Iliad is Not a substitute for Cliff Notes (or the actual books if you're ambitious)
Gasping with Laughter.......2004-01-05
This was the funniest book I have read in...well, ever.
The Iliad was so funny, that I still cannot read certain parts aloud because I can't stop laughing long enough to spit the words out (page 26). Paradise Lost was also a scream, especially the "As If".
I do hope the author skewers a few more classics. Just think of the fun he could have with Madame Bovary!
Feel Smart Again!.......2003-05-15
Why bother reading the classics when you can read Nagan's versions of them? Nagan expertly summarizes all the important things from the books you've never wanted to read. Now you can discuss The Iliad, 1984, Crime and Punishment and a whole slew of other novels without actually reading them! This book is great for the college student who never plans on reading [stuff]written by dead white guys, but doesn't want to feel out of the loop when hearing allusions to these novels. Also, while the stories are quite funny if you've actually read the real versions, they are equally amusing if you have not even glanced at the originals. This is a must read for any person with taste (taste enough to avoid the originals) and a good sense of humor. Enjoy!

Book Description
Serious poker players are often asked, "What's it really like...the world of poker? The answer is not easy because poker is an amazingly complex game. As complex as life itself.
This book will attempt to answer that question. You will be taken to a serious game and be sitting besides the author. That is, you will be a spectator to the unfolding drama of poker. You will get to meet the players up close and personal, witness their strong and weak points, and watch their varied reactions in victory and defeat.
Not only will you "play," but you will have to address those problems that all poker players deal with. This includes bankroll management, developing self control, and understanding what it is that makes a poker player truly great. Your opponents will range from some of the best players in Las Vegas to a brilliant Japanese Admiral as he planned his attack on Pearl harbor.

Even makes a lousy paperweight.......2006-07-30
Nothing to learn here, and not particularly entertaining. The writing is excruciating. If you want a "what's it like" book, get The Biggest Game in Town or Big Deal. If you want to learn to play, start with The Theory of Poker, Super/System, or the Harrington Holdem books.
Book Description
The Pampered Chef is Doris Christopher’s extraordinary account of how she turned an innovative concept and $3,000 investment into a business with annual sales approaching the billion-dollar mark. It is packed with real-life lessons and inspiring insights for small-business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs.
In 1980 Doris Christopher, a former home economist and teacher, was itching to get back into the workforce after an eight-year hiatus as a stay-at-home mom. Drawing on her personal and professional expertise, and determined to make cooking easier and more convenient for families, she started selling high-quality kitchen tools through cooking demonstrations to groups of women in their homes. Today, the company she started in her basement, The Pampered Chef, is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary and has grown into a corporation (now owned by Berkshire Hathaway) with tens of thousands of independent Kitchen Consultants who present more than a million Kitchen Shows a year, attended by more than 12 million people.
The Pampered Chef is the story of the vision, energy, hard work, and chutzpah that drove Christopher and her company to the height of success. She describes her early days as a “one-woman show,” chronicles the company’s gradual expansion, its challenges and growing popularity, and the process, offers invaluable advice and sound strategies on how to found and grow a business, including:
• Hard learned lessons for start-up entrepreneurs
• How to create a business concept and set your priorities
• Knowing when to expand and when to slow growth so that demand doesn’t overwhelm your operations or supplies
• How to counter the naysayers and deal with adversity
Today, as at the company’s founding, achieving a better balance between work and family remains central to The Pampered Chef’s mission. The Pampered Chef brings Christopher’s recipe for success to women, and men, everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
I want to sell Pampered Chef.......2006-04-08
I absolutely loved this book. Doris Christopher's ideas and humble beginnings are absolutely inspiring! She has built an amazing company and shares it for everyone to realize their own potential. Her basic no nonsense attitude towards life and her company are shared in this incredible story. I do not sell Pamperd Chef, but if I was not trying to build another direct sales business I know I would after reading this book!
Absolutely Inspiring.......2006-02-04
I have been purchasing Pampered Chef products for over 16 years and my husband and I have always been huge fans. After many years of buying from someone else, I decided to give it a try and then so did my husband. . . yes, we are both consultants because we believe so much in the products.
I signed up as a consultant a few days after the book was released and read it in one night! After reading the book I was more of a fan than ever. The story is very inspiring to anyone who wants to take the leap of faith in themselves and try to start their own business.
Doris' vision of having a business to earn extra money and still have time to raise her family is very much alive today as it was 25 years ago. The book takes you through the 25 years of her dream from where she started the business in her basement with $3,000 to being the founder a of multi-million dollar company with thousands of women and men who work with The Pampered Chef as hobbyist, part- and full-time consultants.
A must read for anyone who wants to be inspired to start their own business.
