It all starts with Dr. Suess...........2003-06-24
This is an excellent retrospective of the art of Dr. Suess (Theodor Geisel), published for the first major exhibition of his work in 1986. Written before his untimely death, it covers everything from his earliest student sketch books to _You're Only Old Once!_.
While the cleverness of the good doctor's prose is sampled, it is really his artwork that steals the show. The book is filled with both glorious full color, as well as black and white, examples. There are also reproductions of most of the cover illustrations. The truly rare aspect of this book though, is the biographical insights that it gives into the artist's life. The struggles that he went through with underemployment and just trying to survive in the 1930's are especially inspiring these days.
It is fascinating to see the artist's early magazine (Judge and Life) and advertising work (Flit and Esso.) The only noticable omission is his early Hollywood collaboration. There is absolutely no mention of the early Horton cartoons, or of "5000 Fingers of Dr. T."
I especially enjoyed this book because of an incident that happened to me in grade school. I was always fascinated by the art in these books, but when I tried to look at them in third grade, I was told that I couldn't because they were below my "age level." That is a lie, these books, and this art, transcend any bureaucratic, mindless, age grouping. They are ageless and timeless.

Dr. Seuss history to accompany touring art collection in 80s.......1998-01-06
While poking through books on the closeout table at my local bookstore, I uncovered this treasure. The multicolored collage cover grabbed my eye. The thin book, it turns out, isn't any new work by Dr. Suess at all, but a very nice book published to accompany a touring art exhibit of the good doctor's work in the mid 1980's. The introduction and forward key on reasons why we love Dr. Seuss. He allows us to learn yet go "against the conventional grain" with his fantastic, yet strangely thematic imaginary world of characters. This book essentially gives historical background to the pieces I assume were in the exhibit. The book makes me really wish I had gotten the opportunity to see what I'm sure was a great display. There are some black and white prints of early sketches, along with some watercolor prints of Seuss' later work. The book spends alot of time showing the reader (or gallery visitor) the step-by-step process Dr. Seuss went through to put together "Oh, The Places You'll Go," and "You're Only Old Once." The text and artwork are engaging and quite interesting to read, and it follows a simple chronological order spanning Seuss' career. I enjoyed the book, as it gave me greater insight into the artist and his lifelong work, and it encouraged me to begin seriously collecting Seuss' books and videos. However, I was disappointed to later find that this book mentioned very little of Seuss' collaborative works he wrote using the name Theo. LeSieg (Theodore Geisel in reverse). Those works are just as creative and yet they were slighted by this text. It makes me wonder if LeSieg pieces were left out of the touring art exhibit as well. Overall, if you are looking for a solid biography of Seuss, this is not the book you want. But if you are fascinated by his thinking and creative processes, in step-by-step format, this is a book you should definitely add to your collection. And good luck hunting for it. You might want to start at Aunt Edna's yard sale. For that matter, beat the crowds by volunteering to clean out her attic this spring. You may find a few other Seuss treasures!

Book Description
For this project, Middleton and Liittschwager gained unprecedented access to photograph on and around these protected islands that are otherwise completely off-limits to people. Home to nearly seventy percent of our nation's coral reefs, known as the "rainforests of the sea," the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands is a remarkable ecosystem that supports a vast array of interdependent native plants and animals that have evolved in this habitat over millions of years, many existing nowhere else on the planet.
The result is Archipelago. With its more than 300 stunning images, the book illustrates the spectacular diversity of these ocean and island creatures, as well as profiles many of the people dedicated to the preservation of this habitat. The inaccessibility of these islands and the need to protect them means that few people will ever be able to visit them in person, though now, for the first time, the area's inhabitants are available for all the world to see through this important body of work. In conjunction with the publication of Archipelago, exhibitions of these photographs will be mounted in Honolulu and Washington, and will then travel to venues around the country throughout 2006.

Not that good.......2007-02-03
Like most people I purchased this book to use as a coffee table book. Although this book does have some nice images in it. It does not have the wow factor that you would normally expect from a good coffee table book. I would suggest purchasing Ocean by Robert Dinwiddie. (ISBN 0756622050). That book is 1000 times better (in content, pictures, and volume of material), and will keep you entertained much longer.
Exquisite look at hidden world.......2007-01-05
The northwest Hawaiian islands, stretching all the way to Midway are rarely visited because of their remoteness and fragility. This beautiful book gives a comprehensive tour of the area. The coffee table format allows the strange lands and creatures to be seen at their best. The authors' skill and dedication to their topic shows clearly in both photos and text. Recommended for all nature lovers.
5 for the Book, 3 for the Shipping.......2006-08-16
Like the other reviewer, my book was improperly shipped, this time in a box too large so it sloshed around on its journey, getting dinged in the process.
However, the book itself is magnificent. It is a gorgeous, comprehensive collection of images detailing the flora and fauna of the Northwest Hawaiian Islands. This thriving Archipelago is beautiful in every sense of the word, and the intimate portraits that Middleton and LIttschwager have painstakenly produced of these creatures are superb. This is a jewel of a book, for photographic as well as conservationist reasons.
Beautiful book, inadequately packed.......2006-01-31
This is a magnificent book, with unique photgographs of sea creatures on white backgrounds. It would have made a splendid gift, except for the unfortunate fact that it was shipped in a box hardly bigger than itself and had obviously been dropped and crushed. Every page was dented, but it was too late to return it and get a new copy. One wonders why tiny objects are so often shipped in a box many times larger than themselves, but books like this one are tossed casually into the mail with no real protection at all.
Another exceptional collection of images and information.......2005-12-09
Such beautiful work is a treasure and an education all at once. It's a rare treat to be able to see in such intimate detail those creatures who have lived and may perish without our ever having known them except for the work done here. This book, and the entire body of the Liittschwager/Middleton collaboration is a must-have for every conservationist, every school.

really good.......2007-08-20
I'm a fanatic of bone products, so i think they are the most wonderful things i have ever bought.
Perfect --whenever we finally get it!!.......2007-03-28
My son absolutely loves all of the Bone series books, simply devours them. Since he's read all of the ones at our local bookstore I have ordered those online that we can't find elsewhere. We are still waiting after six weeks to receive this one. Most of our amazon orders have been timely, but this is ridiculous! Especially for a child who is eagerly anticipating his order!
Does anyone else agree . . . . ?.......2006-07-12
When I read ROCK JAW and DRAGONSLAYER, I thought nothing could compare.
I was wrong.
This book seems to be the most severely underrated of the whole series. I found it thrilling and heart-wrenching (the whole part about Thorn hating and not trusting Gran'ma Ben)even though the comedy was not truly up to Jeff Smith's usual. I also found myself satisfied at the amount of information (the identity of the hooded one, what makes the baddies think that Phoney will get them, and why Phoney was so stingy and moneystruck.) I loved this book and I can't see why others didn't.
Old Man's Cave..........2006-02-20
OK, I'll get it out of my system now so I can focus on my review and summary. Here I go.... I LOVE BONE!! IT ROCKS!!! I'VE OBSESSIVELY (hmmm...maybe 'obsessively' is too strong.) SEARCHED FOR IT IN LOCAL LIBRARIES!!! whew. OK. I'm done. This is my favorite Bone so far. A lot of mysteries are cleared up, such as, who the hooded one is, why the Lord of the Locust is after Phoney, and what the Lord of the Locust was supposed to be. There is also some interesting Bone family history and valley history. Even though these big myseries are cleared up, there are some small ones still to be seen to, like, will Smiley and Bartleby ever be reunited? (You'll know what I mean if you've read Dragonslayer (Bone 4) and Rock Jaw (Bone 5))This series is my all time favorite one, along with the Clone Wars graphic novels, and Artemis Fowl. (I'm sure I've stated this several times now, but one more time can't hurt.)Start from the beginning and you have a better cance of 'getting' everything.
Tense, dark and epic - yet still for all ages.......2004-05-10
Jeff Smith's wonderful "Bone" series continues with this, the sixth of nine volumes (completing the second of three trilogies). "Old Man's Cave" continues the trend of previous installments, which have slowly grown less humorous and more grim.
Yet through the increasingly dark tone of the "Bone" saga, Smith manages to keep things friendly for all ages, a truly commendable task in this era of R rated comics.
"Bone" is an expansive story about three "bone creatures" (you'd have to see them to understand) that find themselves in a valley peopled with an assortment of crazy and interesting characters. Looming over it all is the menace of a great evil, revealed slowly over the course of nine volumes. The series starts off lighthearted, but grows less so as the story unravels itself.
"Old Man's Cave" is a good example of that. The tale is compelling and dark, letting unfold the tale of Thorn, grandma and the bones, showing us the rising tide of evil in the valley, and ultimately leaving us with a thrilling conclusion filled with despair and hopelessness. It is a great climax to the second of three interwoven trilogies, and without question a perfect end to the second act of this series. When finishing this, you'll reach for the next volume right away.
It all works because Smith combines the kind of classic storytelling perfected by the likes of the legendary Carl Barks (Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge) and Bill Watterson (Calvin & Hobbes) - gleeful cartooning with outrageously expressive faces and gestures - with the epic and engaging plotting of a sweeping fairy tale. "Bone" walks a tightrope and walks it well, managing to be something fans of both Donald Duck and Bilbo Baggins can enjoy.
Comic readers able to look past the lack of men in tights (superheroes) and color artwork will delight in this series. So, too, will those generally not accustomed to comics. Little doubt people will still be reading "Bone" 50 years from now. Broad in scope yet personal and quaint, this is a charming story in every way that will surely outlast 90 percent of other comic works on the shelf.
Jeff Smith's "Bone" series is a critically acclaimed but criminally overlooked epic. And that's too bad, because this deserves to be read.
Customer Reviews:
Good information, poor presentation.......2005-06-22
I was greatly disappointed by "Noah to Abram." I found the text difficult and confusing to read. It is not written in a style that connects with readers. There is only limited flow of ideas and it is very choppy. Somewhere in the text is an excellent book with great concepts describing a young earth and the truth of creation by God.
Unfortunately getting at the information and materials is hindered by the difficult writing style. The author references many other works but does not make his own points clearly. I was reminded of hearing one side of a telephone call. It just is hard to comprehend or follow the author's trains of thought. Many of the referenced works are obscure and difficult to obtain for comparison and this makes it even more complicated to track with the author's conclusions.
Some parts read as Bible commentary, others as apologetics, and still other parts do not really fit any genre. While I agree with his exposure of the fallacy of the theory of evolution, he grinds the anti-evolution axe way too much, and he goes off on tangents that do not pertain to the topics at hand. Sometimes he does not ever wonder back from those distractions. He would have been much more effective had he just presented his concepts and shown the scientific facts that support the truth of creation.
The author often writes that he will cover a subject later, or states it has already been covered elsewhere, but I had trouble finding where anything was covered in a clear and understandable way. While there are jems of ideas scattered throughout the text, it is labor to find them. There are many photos, drawings and charts, some of which are not very useful as they are in small font and are not explained properly. Perhaps had the author used a good editor he could have streamlined and refined the excellent information that is here and then presented it in a more coherent manner.
Overall I was disappointed, for the era of Noah to Abram is understudied and misunderstood. I was hoping for a light to shine on that era, but sadly the book "Noah to Abram" does not illuminate much.

With Anastasia, 20th Century Fox is trying to follow Disney's lead and produce a lavish cartoon film that will become classic family viewing. And in the Disney tradition of book tie-ins, they have issued this extravagant volume, which describes the spectacle and artistry of Anastasia in prose and picture. The Art of Anastasia provides background to the story of the lost Russian princess, the film's titular heroine, as well as insights into how the film was animated. Directors Don Bluth and Gary Goldman wrote the introduction, while critic and historian Harvey Deneroff provided the text. The gorgeous illustrations reveal the painstaking work that went into creating this spectacular movie.

Great book!.......2007-02-10
I loved this book. It had beautiful pictures and I will always treasure it. It is just gorgeous, and it's becoming hard to find, so i'd pick up a copy! You won't be disappointed!
Very nice keepsake.......2004-08-10
I really *LOVE* Anastasia, so was happy to order this special book. Granted, I wondered why the regular price would be so high ($50?!) but I was lucky enough to buy it 2nd-hand, for just about $12 (s+h included)... When I recieved it, it was skinnier than I thought it'd be... And every pic in it, I'd virtually seen before, online & such. So there was not much newness there... I havent sat down to read the written stuff yet, but I do like gazing thru the pages, having only seen the pics thru a compu screen previously, and now I can see them like this, they are just wonderful. It's a book probly not worth the $50 main price- but if you can afford $20 & under, definitely. I will always treasure it! AnyaSimbi@aol.com

Disney?.......1999-02-05
Just wondering why a Twentieth Century Fox book comes up under a search for the Walt Disney Company?
The artwork of this book is very inspirational........1999-01-23
I am a big fan of Don Bluth and Gary Goldman so I liked their introductions in this book. For example, how they initially got a call from 20th Century Fox to create this feature. I liked the artwork that was featured in The Art of Anastasia, but I feel that the book could have been more in-depth. Deneroff could have written more about the process, the actual production of the feature, and perhaps mini-biographies of the people behind the film. However, the book should be fun for casual animation fans. Yet, true animation-philes may be somewhat disappointed.
More, please!.......1998-07-01
I prefer the Disney art books to this one, which isn't quite in-depth enough to satisfy the true animation lover. For those who just want a look at the world of animation, this is good, but those who really loved the movie and want to know all about its making will be somewhat disappointed. Still, what's there is very beautiful to look at.

Book Description
The articles in this book illustrate the important connections between art, identity, and social formations that disciplines like anthropology and ethnomusicology have long taken for granted. These case studies emphasize the importance of artistic practices and forms within diaspora formations in particular and within social and political movements more generally. The contributors, coming from different disciplinary backgrounds, shed a unique light on the specific potentials of the different arts to create and represent diasporic subjectivities upon which the very existence of diasporas depend.

Customer Reviews:
This book is *GOLD* --- Read this Review!---- A++++++++.......2006-11-21
I'm writing this review because the previous comment by "Chris S." is wrong. This isnt a book you should "read in one night" and it is not just general information. This book is an insider's GUIDE to pharm sales, not the insider's guide to info on pharma companies. The guy doesn't know what he's talking about. This book has EVERYTHING you need to know about getting into pharm. sales. It's the one stop book of info. that will give you exact interview questions, complete overview of the entire interview process, in depth explanations of what's expected of a pharm. sales rep, and a good overview of well, everything. It's almost like sitting with a pharm. sales rep and asking him/her questions. I was a college grad with barely any sales experience. I had a friend in pharm. sales who recommended this book, and with the help of the book and my friend, I was able to get through 6 VERY competitive interviews with a pharma powerhouse company. Again, I didn't have any professional sales experience. I bought other pharm sale books as well and returned them. Nothing compares to this book. If your looking to get into the world of pharmaceutical sales, just like the title says, then this book is for you. Don't pass it by and if you get the interview, don't for to ABC - Always Be Closing!
Best information when combined with PharmRepSelect CDs.......2005-12-06
Four stars to Jane Williams for writing a comprehensive text like book on getting a job in pharmaceutical sales. Excellent content but could have been a bit more original in both style and format. I chose this book because after reading the reviews it promised to be the most comprehensive guide available. I was not dissappointed, but in order to be the most comprehensive information, I also ordered PharmRepSelect audio book CD and Interview Insight CD along with this book. Good choice, because it provides different view points from authors with different styles and experience.I recommend information on different formats, keeps it way less boring, together this is a five star package! Thanks to Insider's Guide book and PharmRepSelect audio CDs I aced my interview and now work for a pharmaceutical company selling anti cancer drugs. Going to work is rewarding and I thank these authors for their help in getting me a career I enjoy.
This book is the bomb!!!.......2004-04-22
Okay people, I bought the book 3 months ago, and I must say it is the bomb!!! I have no sales experience, but this book guided me step by step. It even gives you various scenarios with various answers. It is outstanding for a newcomer to the industry. Take heed and get the book!! I wanted the newest edition, but it hadn't come out yet and I was desperate to begin my research. I had 2 interviews with the same company--I was referred by my pharmaceutical sales rep friend--and I believe they went well. I am waiting to proceed to the next step, which is with the district manager. Needless to say, I was overly prepared. The binder the book suggests you put together totally "WOWED" the interviewer. 2 words...THE BOMB!
New Pharmaceutical Sales Representative!.......2004-02-24
What a superior career guide! After looking at several books, I found Ms. Williams' Insider's Guide... and used it to prepare for a pharmaceutical sales career. Three weeks after buying the guide, I have a job with Pfizer!! There is no way that I could have prepared for those FIVE interviews without the Insider's Guide... I wasn't surprised by a single interview question. This book is the best investment I've ever made. I can't recommend it enough to anyone who wants a career in pharmaceutical sales.
Absolutely fantastic!.......2004-02-24
As a professional sales consultant, I am always looking for books that I can utilize as a consultant. The new 7th Edition of the "Insider's Guide..." is absolutely fantastic! This book offers excellent advice on networking, the pharmaceutical industry and the new physician call guidelines for pharmaceutical sales representatives, understanding the interview process, using personality profiling to your advantage, 150 specific detailed pharmaceutical sales interview questions and answers as well as major pharmaceutical company profiles and contract sales organizations contact information.
The book is very well written, professionally edited, and reflects the author's credibility. It is easy to see why this book is being utilized by college and university sales and marketing professors for their sales and marketing courses and special sales classes.
