    3 out of 5 stars decent book.......2007-08-28

this book is probably going to be one of the required books for photography in college but it's not a horrible book. not the most exciting, but definitely has enough to get one started with critical thinking about photography and such.

    1 out of 5 stars Yecch!.......2007-05-20

I am sorry I bought this book. It was written by a college professor for students, readers that have no choice but to buy the book, and it reads that way. The author does not use his own vision and voice to criticize and to explain criticism but instead relies on a survey of methods used by critics. The writing was wooden, and the book had an overwhelming emphasis on staged, "arty" photographs. I could not bring myself to finish this book and have given it to my local library for their book sale.

    5 out of 5 stars Important Book.......2005-08-23

Criticizing Photographs remains one of the most important books in the field, and Barrett has updated the text with new photos to discuss. His new editions include worthy changes and are not ploys to sell new copies. I have used his books for years in an advanced photography college class.

    Book Description

" Criticizing Photographs: An Introduction to Understanding Images is now in its third edition and it has become the standard in photo criticism and theory courses throughout the United States. The book contains an elegant pedagogical apparatus founded on the four critical activities that Terry Barrett so ably illuminates -- describing, interpreting, evaluating, and theorizing.

Moreover, Barrett's analytical categorization of photographs into ideal types including the aesthetically evaluative and the interpretive (to cite two examples) has provided readers with a highly original and useful way to think about how photographs are made to function in the world." Louis Kaplan, Southern Illinois University

2 out of 5 stars Goes on and on.......2006-04-30

Includes miles of intellectual blather. Fits well into sexually charged point of view of photography. Uses most horrific and grotesk as examples. On page 33 in third edition author mentions head decapitation as one photographer's "external" influences. Uses sexual pictures as examples. Generally a politically correct lightly negative type discourse on photography. I feel sorry for the students subjected to this pulp.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction........2004-10-15

Having never taken a course in art appreciation, I found this book to be an excellent introduction to interpreting photographic images. The comment above about this book serving as a framework is a good one. Essentially any photograph will fall into one of the categories, giving the viewer a frame of reference within which to interpret and appreciate the meaning of the work. It forces you to slow down and think about each photograph you encounter, ultimately enriching the viewing experience. I highly recommend it for photography aficionados and photographers alike.

    2 out of 5 stars Criticisng Criticism.......2002-06-11

A look at the subtitle to this book, "An Introduction to Understanding Images", might lead one to believe that it is about photographs and what makes them good or bad (or if there are such things as "good" and "bad" photographs). But instead it is about photographic criticism, primarily written. And even then it really doesn't tell you very much about how to write criticism yourself, or how to interpret what you read, or how to develop patterns of thought that would enable you to criticize in a useful fashion. Instead most of the book is concerned with the pigeon holes into which different kinds of photographic criticism can be put.

An unstated thesis of this book seems to be that the criticism of photographs is an art form itself. Certainly anyone who has read something like Walter Benjamin's "the Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" might agree. But if it is an art, then it has both form and content, and any book claiming to teach one about the art (I almost said craft) had better address those points. To know that there are theoretical schools like Postmodernism or Feminist Theory is useful to those trying to organize photographic criticism and may be helpful to the photographic critic who is trying to decide what his own approach is, but knowing that these schools exist does not help a critic as much as a knowledge of how to look at a picture and organize a written commentary.

Fortunately, the book has a number of examples of written criticism, including several examples of different critics addressing the same picture. Unfortunately most of the criticism addresses the content of the photograph without considering how the form relates to the content or how, as Mark Schorer has said, technique leads to discovery. For example, Ansel Adams' photographs rely upon the range of light from the whitest whites to the blackest blacks to make their statements about the grandeur of the American wilderness. Unfortunately, nothing in this book considers photographic technique for the critic, although there are plenty of opportunities. For example, there is an ambiguous picture by Robert Doisneau taken in a Paris Café showing a younger women and an older man. The picture is grainy and the depth of field shows the women more sharply then the man. Both of these techniques should contribute to the possible interpretation of this photograph, and yet they are not mentioned.

I think the photo critic who wants to improve his art would be far better served by learning something about photography, and then reading actual criticism, like John Szarkowski's "Looking at Photographs". "Criticizing Photographs" should only be considered as a supplement to such studies.

5 out of 5 stars useful and excellent book for students of photography.......2000-12-26

I have read Persian (Farsi) translation of the 2nd. edition of this book. Thanks to Mr. Barrett and the translators of the book. It helped me to understand how to criticize photographs and I found it a unique book in this field. After searching in Internet I found out that Mr. Barrett Has revised the book in ashort periodof time. I suggest, as a student of photography in university, to all studentd in the world to read the book. Again thanks to Mr. Barrett.

5 out of 5 stars "It takes more time to make a picture than to appreciate it".......2000-11-21

    This is an excellent book.

These are some questions the book deals about: How a photograph is made? What are its purposes? How should its context be considered? Was that photograph made or taken?

In this book several criteria (even opposite ones) about photographs are also analyzed and compared, leaving to the reader the decision about the one(s) to take. The process of understanding a photograph is not simple, but this book is a nice guide to follow.

At the end of the book, examples of reviews are included, as a reference not only for students, but also for the person who simply would want to talk about a photograph. Moreover, advice concerning the redaction is also given.

The History of Photography has long been recognized as a classic contribution to the study of photography. Beaumont Newhall has achieved the most sensitive and thorough history of the medium, revealed through the eyes of those photographers who have shaped our vision and the understanding of our society through photography. Using more than two hundred illustrations of works by major photographers such as Hill and Adamson, OSullivan, Cameron, Atger, Emerson, Stieglitz, Weston, Adams, Lange and Evans, the author presents a fascinating, comprehensive study of the significant trends and development in the medium since the first photographs in 1939.

This is not Al's best work. It's more rambling than usual and not so pithy. I got it for cheap and got enough laughs to justify my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, the Puzzling Poor Reviews You'll Read.......2006-12-09

If you're expecting one of Franken's biting political satires, you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting Stuart Smalley, you'll be disappointed. If you have no expectations whatsoever, and your sense of humor is even remotely in tune with Franken's, you'll have a blast (plan on a) chuckling a lot, b) laughing hysterically only slightly less, and c) even (who knew?) being moved from time to time). Though it is mostly wiseacre (no slight intended), OTIK is, in places, also quite wise. It is a very quick read, more entertainingly digested in one fell swoop, IMHO, than piecemeal. OTIK is proof positive, as though further proof were necessary, that Al Franken is one very funny (and thoughtful) guy. I loved it!

                3 out of 5 stars Provocative.......2006-02-11

Al Franken is known to possess an extremely dry sense of humor. Therefore it is not surprising that his book is as parched as the man himself. Each chapter is utterly short and sweet. Every time a reader thinks the writer is supplying a real good advice the next sentence jolts the reader back to reality i.e. Al Franken is a comedian. Namedropping is abundance. Name-calling seems to be a norm. This man really knows how to make full use of the freedom of speech in the USA - nothing's wrong with that. But, chapter after chapter of similar ranting kind of tires one out after a while albeit the laugh-out-loud jokes that can be found in certain parts of the book.

2 out of 5 stars Oh, How This Book Doesn't Work for Its Market.......2005-09-18

If you can endure Franken's cycle of hilarious writing to crap to writing about how crappy it is before finally getting back to the good stuff, go for it.

"Oh, the Things I Know" takes great pains to steer clear of incindiary comments so that lots and lots of people who don't know a college graduate well enough to get them something they really want will buy this book as a graduation gift.

Unfortunately for Franken, he's playing to the right audience - the over 35 buyer of the gift for a college graduate - who will likely flip through a few pages and chuckle before setting it back down. Because the book isn't comforting, uplifting or even really that funny for the market.

3 out of 5 stars Oh, how annoying this gimmick gets!.......2005-08-30

This is supposed to be a sharp and witty satire of inspirational books. Franken followed the self-help format well, but I never really laughed at his self-deprecating witticisms. His other books are much better. Throughout this, I couldn't help but think that Dave Barry could have done this topic much better.

Franken fans may well enjoy this, but I don't think it has wide appeal.

One funny passage was on [p. 73]: "My son...plays...Grand Theft Auto III, in which the object is to pick up a prostitute in a stolen car and murder her. It's not my kind of thing. But when I was young, I listened to the Beatles, which my parents viewed with equal horror. Today, the Beatles are cultural icons, revered around the world. By the time my son is my age, the same will probably be said of the wizards behind Grand Theft Auto III."

Originally published in Great Britain and later distributed in the colonies, The Empress of Sex, by Maurice Leonard, was a welcome addition to the rather staid Mae West biographies available at the time. Leonard, a British television producer, flew to Los Angeles and spent considerable time interviewing some of Mae West's gay entourage in order to give his book a sensational slant.
One inner circle devotee, extremely upset at not being interviewed, at the time living in the desert as a virtual recluse and changing his phone number every few months, publicly denounced this intriguing examination as "utter trash and a pack of lies," when he was promoting his own pictorial tribute to Ms West.
Although well-researched and documented, this fascinating study failed to capture the imagination of Mae West fans, and was sadly overlooked, in part due to Leonard's dry British wit. Pity, because it's a jolly good read.

This book gives you real insight into Mae West's life and personality. While there are some errors in the captions under a few photographs, it is all well researched and very entertaining. I have read it more than twice...

The book about Mae West was good. I enjoyed all of it. It was funny, touching and very entertaining. I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Mae West: The Bad Gal That Made Good.......2001-01-02

Mae West: Empress of Sex by Maurice Leonard is a spirited account of the wild, serenely-brazen, sex-drenched life of Americas's foremost 1930's sex goddess Mae West. Saucy Miss West was born in 1893 in Brooklyn, New York , a gal with nerve to spare. Although in many ways still a product of the times, West was an autonomous, calculating cookie that knew the power of image and scandal in generating a stage career. Leonard shows West at the black clubs of 1920's New York City studying the outrageously sexy dances of the black crowd, doing her best to capture their moves, and then introducing those moves as her own to a properly shocked, white Broadway audience. West wrote her own stage and movie material; she felt she knew what was right for her better than anyone else. She wrote plays, books, and screenplays dealing with the forbidden topics of homosexuality(The Drag), and sex (The Constant Sinner). She had a taste for musclemen, handsome black studs and wayward, lawless thugs. She generally never met a man she didn't like. Leonard's tome on West shows a woman who liked to be in control, control of her career, her men, and delusionally time itself. (She believed she looked twenty-six while in her eighties.) This book is a must read for all West's fans.

4 out of 5 stars Cognitive science meets Madison Avenue.......2007-05-24

This treatise is designed for patient, methodical readers with a quest for insight. Erik Du Plessis is committed to explaining how advertisements work on consumers' consciousness, so he reviews existing research on advertising, and includes cognitive science's understanding of how the brain works on a chemical and cellular level. His research is accessible, since he often recaps and provides analogies that bring it to life, but some of the material remains dense and even obfuscates key points. Du Plessis' results are accurate but may seem self-defining such as the idea that ads you like are ads you remember and they can be difficult to apply. This is an impressive attempt to bring social science and neurological theory to bear on advertising. Given the intangible nature of creativity, a strong intuitive understanding of what makes advertisements likeable might help ad designers get more from this dissection. Of course, the industry also wants to know how it can reach a tech-oriented audience that records its favorite programs on TIVO and fast-forwards through the ads anyway. We find that this innovative book may be most useful for professionals in areas that involve a quantifiable, systematic approach, such as methods for determining how many ads to buy and how to allocate them across television outlets and other media.

3 out of 5 stars Too much research.......2006-11-22

I found this book to be filled with irrelevant research. I had the idea that this book would be more simplistic but unfortunately it's to involved and makes no sense to the common man on the street. If you want quick straight forward ideas on marketing and advertising this is not the book for you. If you are student who is needing bucket loads of information to impress the lecturer you should buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Correcting the Record.......2005-08-13

The author's report of the Gibson/Dubow advertising recall controversy (p166-167) includes inappropriate statements which should be corrected and the record set straight.

It is not true that, "Unfortunately, the 'gist' of the 'answering' was that Larry was offended that Joel had not consulted with him before making...the results public....". Apparently the author missed my answer, published in the Journal of Advertising Research, May/June 1994, Vol. 34, No. 3, which directly rebutted Dubow's charges. It had no hint of the personal pique suggested by this quotation.

The author states, "Professor Joel Dubow reanalyzed Gibson's data and found that he was guilty of 'sloppy statistics'." This 'finding' is absurd. First, I did not conduct any statistical analysis so I could not possibly have been guilty of 'sloppy statistics'. Second, "Not Recall" contained very little 'Gibson data'-- of the 38 papers cited in this literature review, only 2 were by me and Dubow ignored both of them.

The author concludes, "Both.....and Gibson's papers have subsequently been 'debunked': that is, the evidence they presented has been shown to be invalid." Not true! There is no basis for this sweeping conclusion other than the already rebutted Dubow charges. Indeed the author himself notes, "In the end of this illuminating exchange, many people in the industry still thought that "Not Recall" provided real evidence that recall was not a valid way of measuring the effectiveness of advertsing".

Over 20 years ago, I said that the 'persuasion/recall' argument was the longest playing controversy in all of Marketing Research. Unfortunately,in 2005 it is still going on but I hope that the written record of that argument can be kept accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of what makes advertising work.......2005-07-09

I am an accountant by trade who has recently taken on a volunteer advertising position. I found the book very informative in that it offered good common sensne to advertising. The conclusions were supported by research from all over the world. I will be reading it again.
