From Hanoi to Hollywood: The Vietnam War in American Film
ASIN: 0275938689 |
Book Description
A multitude of literary and cinematic works were spawned by the Vietnam war, but this is a unique book, combining moving prose with powerful illustrations created by combat artists in the U.S. military. Dr. Noble has assembled a remarkable collection of 153 reproductions printed in black and white, arranged with oral histories, letters and other commentaries to give the reader a more intimate understanding of the combat soldier who served in Vietnam and what he had to endure. Forgotten Warriors is not intended to argue the merits of U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia. Rather, through the visual impact of the illustrations, the soldiers themselves express what the Vietnam experience was like in a way that is different and more profound than perhaps any other work on the subject. The main focus of the book is on the way artists saw the world of the "grunt": patrols, life in the rear, fighting the terrain and weather, tests of endurance, the machines of war and the effects of combat and its aftermath. The reader is also given a sense of how some writers and artists felt about the country and the people of South Vietnam. To date, our perceptions of the Vietnam war have been influenced largely by movies, television and novels. Recognizing this, Dr. Noble enlisted Professor William J. Palmer, a noted authority on the media and their reportage fo the war, to provide an essay that allows the reader to compare his or her past impressions with the art works contained in this book. A moving collection, Forgotten Warriors offers the truest picture of the Vietnam war in human terms.

How to Cheat in Photoshop - A Have to Have Book.......2007-08-31
This is a very fun book to work thru. It comes with a CD that has photos to work with. You will install the CD and use the different effects over and over. I find myself going back to the book on many different projects. Most of the effects are ones that you can use in editing any type of photo. I loved the book and recomend it highly. Even beginners will find it easy to follow.
Straight and to the Point.......2007-06-09
Just got into this book and I love it already. It may help for you to have another book along for tool and palette reference. The accompanying cd-rom is a great help, but i just wish that it had more videos. This book is definitely one of the top PAdobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One (One-On-One)hotoshop books that I own.
Never trust a photograph again!.......2007-04-11
This is an excellent hands-on tutorial in getting the most out of Photoshop CS2, Ostensibly about creating realistic-looking photomontages (though most of the examples wouldn't fool someone who's paying attention), this book is actually for anyone who has struggled to learn about layers and masks and levels. It's accessible and fun.
powerful resource for photomontages.......2007-04-06
If you need a book for photomontage , this book is excellent.
it's worth every cent.
Cheating never felt that good. (At least not to me)........2006-11-06
Excellent! You'll found out quite an amount of useful tips, tricks and of course tutorials.
Great print and paper.
All the tutorials are explained well and illustrated well. Some tutorials are Quicktime movies on CD.
The CD also contains bonus content like files to test your skills on, some pictures, Photoshop files of all the tutorials in the book, and the deleted pages of second edition.
The content itself is very useful: almost all of the tutorials are useful, no nonsense. For me the chapter that discusses the vanishing points is a blessing (well, the whole book is actually), so whatever you Photoshop needs are, this book will satisfy most of them.
In short, this book's a great way to upgrade your Photoshop skills.

See an Icon in her Whimsical Innocence.......2006-04-08
When the planet Krypton exploded, Argo City miraculously survived under a bubble of air. However, the ground soon turned into kryptonite. Despite the diligent efforts of scientist Zor-El, Argo City was soon destroyed, save for Zor-el's daughter, Kara. He sent her to Earth, where he had discovered another Kryptonian survivor: Superman. In a quirk of fate, Superman is in fact Kara's cousin. Discovering her rocket, Superman takes the newly arrived Supergirl to a local orphanage, where, under the guise of Linda Lee, she must remain hidden. For Superman realizes she needs to learn Earth's ways, and he sees an opportunity to develop a secret weapon.
I have a personal caveat when it comes to reading vintage comics: plot over character. This is especially true for silver age super-hero comics, which were predominantly aimed at kids, and so went more for elaborate plot gimmickry. Another caveat must be brought to "The Supergirl Archives" Vol. 1: this series of stories, written by almost exclusively adult men, was aimed at girls. As such, it's not hard to see certain presumptions of the day taken at the heart of most of these stories. Indeed, the central premise of the series it pretty "girl-friendly": Supergirl must live covertly as Linda, never allowing her existence be known. When she does go into action, it's usually to prevent some disaster, or solve some minor problem around the orphanage. In other words, Supergirl wasn't given much opportunity to punch out Lex Luthor.
Written mainly by Otto Binder, the stories are whimsical, and get a great deal of mileage out of the simple idea of a 15-year-old girl with super powers. While Linda can't operate in the open, she does get a great deal of satisfaction in being able to help her fellows at the orphanage, be it to help them with adoption or simply blowing away rain clouds. Jim Mooney's art, while similar to the other artists on Superman, is still very good, and grew more distinct as the series progressed, conveying the good natured fun cleanly and with tremendous energy.
It's hard to pin down any favorites. Most are quite fun and satisfying. There are some that take the premise of the character to illogical extremes, as Superman puts Supergirl through some harsh and dubious tests to prove her ability to keep her secret. There is also one story, "Mighty Maid", in which Supergirl poses as Superman's super-powered girlfriend, that is just creepy when one thinks about it too much. However, these are minor pitfalls in a collection of stories that feature Supergirl trying to develop immunity to kryptonite, and then accidently giving a normal cat super powers, Supergirl getting adopted by a police officer and his wife, and a team-up with the Legion of Super-heroes, among others.
"The Crisis on Infinite Earths" killed and then erased this version of Supergirl from existence. She's recently been reintroduced after a couple of different versions. It's nice see the character when she was fresh and simple.
Wonderful book of Supergirl adventures.......2006-04-01
I am a fan of the Superman family of comics and love Supergirl. It was a joy to read this book and learn of Supergirl's origins. The book is very well made and the graphics are terrific. I would highly recommend this book to any fan of Supergirl. I just wish there was a similar book written for Superboy and also one for Lois Lane or Jimmy Olsen. I loved those comics as a kid as well.
Tales of the Girl of Steel.......2006-03-30
The first Supergirl Archive contains the introduction and the earliest adventures of the Silver Age(classic) Supergirl, the one and only Kara Zor-El. In this book, you will see Kara struggle with maintaining her superhero identity(as Supergirl) secret from the world, and you will laugh at her ingenuity as this spunky female superhero finds ways to balance the secrecy and still fight the good fight as Supergirl. By modern standards, the art may seem simplistic, but the stories are fun, and move along at a relatively quick pace. Stories included are : Superman #123, and Action Comics #252-269.
~part 2~
The second Supergirl Archive includes the following stories: Action Comics # 269-285. In this volume, Supergirl(a.k.a Kara Zor-El) is publicly introduced to the world as Supergirl. Also, this second hardcover collection of classic stories contains Supergirl's first encounter with the futuristic superhero team, the Legion of Superheroes. Once again, these classic stories are suitable for all ages.
Jerry Siegel's original Supergirl is the best!.......2004-02-14
I really love the first and original Supergirl/Linda Lee by Jerry Siegel! She was truly, truly the best, compared to the later supergirls. I hope WB can adapt Jerry Siegel's original Supergirl/Linda Lee and add her to TV's Smallville later on! Also, the comics writers made a huge mistake by killing the original supergirl in the 1980's and coming up with inferior supergirls afterwards. They should have just retired her peacefully on earth and leave Linda Lee/Supergirl alive! To me, she's always been Earth's Guardian Angel after Superman!
Pure Silver Age fun........2003-11-02
The best part of the Supergirl archives is that it is strongly set in the Superman universe where the most outlandish things can happen with nary a bat of an eye. This is the tall tales and folklore of the 20th Century.
A fun read and a vacation from the all too self conscious comics of today.

Raging Grannies: Wild Hats, Cheeky Songs, and Witty Actions for a Better World
ASIN: 1894898109 |
Book Description
When the Raging Grannies sprang up in 1987 they didn't realize they'd be starting a worldwide movement. They just wanted to protest, but in a different way. And they do. Their weapons are outrageousness, satire, and song. And they were the beginning of more than 50 chapters of Raging Grannies that now thrive throughout Canada, the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Europe.
Wearing outlandish hats and warbling witty lyrics, they poke fun at the powerful people who are wreaking havoc with their grandchildren's world. But in spite of their lighthearted approach, their purpose is extremely serious. The Grannies have challenged nuclear-armed ships, forestry companies, arms manufacturers, multinational corporations, pharmaceutical giants, manufacturers of war toys, the World Trade Organization, and every level of government, from municipal councils to the American presidency.
For their messages of peace and justice, Grannies have been hosed by the U.S. Navy, arrested, jailed and pepper-sprayed. They've also been praised by Ralph Nader, Peter Gzowski, David Suzuki and Pete Seeger, invited to perform far and wide, and hailed as role models.
Off Our Rockers is a most readable and amusing book, showing how groups of older women around the world take on the powers that be, win the occasional battle, and have a wonderful time doing it all.

Go Granny Go !!.......2004-08-20
This book is so wonderfully written. While the subject matter is
incredibly disturbing (US nuclear subs in Canadian waters, rain forest
clear cuts, etc) the authors inject a steady stream of humour which makes
the book an easy and exciting read. I was glued to the book and wanted
more when I got to the end. The Raging Grannies are an inspiration to all
ages, and they are so brave !
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the abc's of activism,
to those who are burned out from being "awake" and need inspiration, and
to anyone approaching mid-life so they can start thinking about becoming a
Raging Granny.
I also think this book should be required reading in the Canadian school
system. Its important that Canadian children know that their future is
being fought for by these wonderful women.
When I grow up, I'm going to be a Raging Granny !!

When the personal becomes political.......2004-08-17
'Off Our Rockers and Into Trouble' describes the formation of the first Raging Grannies group, in Victoria, B.C. Written by two founding members, with Anne Moon, a more recent member, this book shows through personal experience and reflection what the Raging Grannies is about. Easy to read, informative, accurate, funny, honest, provocative... these brave women, all activists within the peace and environment movement before becoming Raging Grannies, tell about their optimism and sharp learning curve as they take on super-powers at a local level. Simply by protesting the presence of U.S. nuclear submarines in their harbour, they start an action which becomes a world-wide movement. This inspiring account makes the Grannies human, not just the performance-grabbing radicals that popular media loves or hates. An important book for activists and should be required reading for granny wannabes. Not the only book about the Raging Grannies, but it's about the first group, so very important. Beware: Reading it could challenge your complacency and passivity.
Power to the Grandmother-People!.......2004-08-09
What an inspiring, enlightening, and delightful book this is! I am old enough to recall the Gray Panthers movement and Caprow's "happenings;" the raging grannies appear to manifest the best of both. They show us how to work for peace and social justice by abdicating our stereotypical roles as nice, invisibile older women, by using courage, creativity, and outrageousness to get results. I bought this book because I am doing a Ph.D. dissertation on older women as agents of social change, and expect to quote it frequently.
Inspiring!.......2004-08-09
Never doubt that a small group of little old ladies CAN change the world! This book will leave you holding your sides with laughter while shaking your head in amazement that just a few women, armed with nothing more than facts, "chutzpah" -- and a sense of humor -- can successfully challenge the powers that be. "Off Our Rockers" provides an intimate look into the lives of twelve feisty women who joined together to become "The Raging Grannies," never imagining that they would spawn a world-wide movement to save the world. This is one book that I will read again and again, and then pass on to my granddaughter!

Ms. Foundation President Marie Wilson is looking for some good women and men to become "post heroic" leaders. In Closing the Leadership Gap, Wilson focuses on the virtues of sharing power by skewering culture bound male leadership styles and celebrating the arguable premise that women use a similar "recipe" of leadership values such as inclusion and cooperation.
As co-founder of the White House project on women's leadership, Wilson is passionate in her belief that women's voices at the table offer an opportunity to shape policy around the marginalized issues of violence, education and healthcare. Making room for women at the top also gives men permission to bring their soft side to work." As she explains, "Both men and women must be in power to moderate the influence of masculinity in all of us." Such polemic does not prevent Wilson from making a persuasive case for role expansion rather than role reversal. Her practical approach to developing women as leaders is two pronged. First, individual women must confront four "Scarlett A's"(authority, ambition, ability, authenticity) that create barriers to leadership. Then, she describes the cultural and institutional changes that would involve men and women in sharing domestic leadership.
Her examples are fascinating and eclectic--including anecdotes about A-list leaders such as Hilary Clinton and Paramount Chair Sherry Lansing; research about hairstyles, husbands, and hemlines of female candidates; and tales from her election to the Des Moines City Council. Wilson puts on gender glasses to examine the "celluloid ceiling" in Hollywood. In all of her examples, the goal is nothing less than changing expectations of both sexes. Even those readers who may not agree that women share similar--even superior--leadership values, will applaud her goal: The opportunity for women and men to integrate the satisfactions of leadership and family life. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Insightful and inspiring, Closing the Leadership Gap is a call to action for the increased presence of women in powerful leadership positions in our country. A leading women's advocate and cofounder of the White House Project, Marie C. Wilson argues that while our nation sits on a world spinning with crises from terrorism and weapons of mass destruction to a fragile economy and corporate greed, half of its natural resourceswomenhave not been tapped for their uniquely valuable contribution to solving these problems that only they can provide.
Rich with historical context and supported by a wealth of current data and innovative research, this book explains chapter by chapter the leadership gap between women and men and the deeply ingrained cultural factors that continue to create resistance to women at the top. It also explores the new insights and strategies women are using to leverage their power of authority, ambition, ability, and authenticityhave been denied women and how they are claiming these vital qualities for themselves. Written with passion and documented with lively behind-the-scenes stories from the trenches, Closing the Leadership Gap argues for women's leadership in all spheres and offers steps to get us there.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read!.......2006-07-10
This book was really intriguing and so informative. Marie C. Wilson writes in a relatable way and her stories and experiences bring the book to life. If everyone were to read Closing the Leadership Gap the world would be a better place!
Closing the Leadership Gap provides a road map women need.......2006-05-11
The most important sentences in Marie C. Wilson's Closing the Leadership Gap are these:
"Everyone knows at least one woman who should be urged to follow her dream, a woman who is utterly capable of being more than she is if only she were given encouragement. We need to find her and feed her ambition. Don't wait for the culture to change. Change it yourself by helping others to step forward."
Step up. Encourage others. It's just that easy.
Wilson draws on more than 30 years of experience as an advocate of women's issues to create a virtual road map for women who aspire to be leaders, no matter where they live, no matter what they do or who they are. She reveals where cultural obstacles are, why they exist and why we must not let them stand in our way.
In this, Wilson leads first by example. Founder and president of The White House Project and co-creator of Take Our Daughters to Work Day, she dives through layers of surveys and research to reveal deeply rooted cultural biases that keep women from bringing their unique contributions to the head table.
Wilson founded The White House Project in 1998 to address one of the biggest impediments to women's leadership - the lack of a real pipeline. Reports that President George W. Bush is encouraging his brother Jeb to run for the office in 2008 shine a bright spotlight on this phenomenon among men, who start running for office earlier in life and work their way to the top through connections and raw ambition, a quality often criticized in women. Wilson's recap of studies that show how women politicians fare in the media is nothing short of infuriating.
Now more than ever, we need the outrage driven by America's stubborn loyalty to the male leadership paradigm. We need it to overcome the inertia of a life that's not so bad, even though it's not so good, either.
And as Wilson does in this book, we need to encourage other women, to inspire other women to live their best and highest dreams.
Obviously Hillary campaign propaganda.......2006-05-05
Amazon.com praises this book: "Her examples are fascinating and eclectic--including anecdotes about A-list leaders such as Hillary Clinton and Paramount Chair Sherry Lansing." Yes. Very eclectic? A Clinton and Hollywood? Hardly.
This book is obviously getting renewed interest in order to help the Hillary project. Women long ago closed the leadership gap in most fields. And Condi Rice has closed it at the national administration level.
"Challenging Comfort" .......2004-12-11
Marie C. Wilson is absolutely correct in stating that women can and must help run the world. The book is well written and inspiring. However, the tone of the book directs Wilson's message toward women readers only. This can be extremely detrimental because it fails to speak to the leadership role that male readers play. Both women and men can together bring about change in the workplace but Wilson suggests that women, themselves, must be the only catalysts to bring about change. Although this is true and women must be a catalyst and strive for change, men also have a large part in recognizing the leadership traits of women to and altering the thoughts and perceptions of society. Change cannot be brought about if only one group is emotionally and physically invested, both genders must join together to change the world for the better.
The book also talks a lot about the nurturing traits of women. These traits of nurture, self-sacrifice and sensitivity are both valued by society and by women themselves. Wilson states that the qualities women bring do not match the traditional actions of a leader. This statement groups all women together and further stereotypes the roles and attributes of women. All women are different and hence their leadership characteristics are different. On the other hand, Wilson does a better job in diversifying the occupations and types of women involved in leadership positions. From the United States government and military positions to British parliament, Wilson shows the importance and benefits of female leadership all over the world.
The author also makes it a point to state that gender biases are products of television, Hollywood and advertising. One of the movies Wilson feels combats these biases is the movie Legally Blond starring Reese Witherspoon. I feel that this movie contradicts Wilson's message. In fact, the main character had many attributes that contributed to the biases and gender stereotypes of women. In the movie, Reese Witherspoon is overwhelmingly concerned over her hair, nails and clothing and entered law school not for herself but to gain admiration from her boyfriend. This movie is not sending the same message that Wilson is trying to get across in her book. In general, Wilson's book brings up many points that are overlooked by society. The book is an inspiration for women who, in the twenty first century, strive to become the next leaders of the world and challenge the "comforts" of business, politics and domestic life. This book should be read by everyone, men and women, who strive to be a leader and make a difference.
Not Just for Women! .......2004-10-26
This book lays out the issues in a compelling and clear way, and I hope will lead to a better future for men and women alike.
