The Diary of Frida Kahlo: An Intimate Self-Portrait
ASIN: 0313315655 |
Book Description
Though often portrayed in scholarly literature as a "spontaneous" artist, Frida Kahlo worked in a quite deliberate manner, basing her paintings on diverse cultural and philosophical sources. Imaging Her Selves uncovers the unexplored visual and textual foundations of Kahlo's imagery, illustrating--through a detailed study of her diary, letters, library collection, and other material-- the complex multilayered meanings of the many selves she comprised. In dozens of self-portraits, Kahlo examined the conventional and unconventional roles with which she attempted to identify. Ankori's work offers an innovative interpretation of her art as a major contribution to the ongoing human quest for a fuller understanding of the meaning of self. Acknowledging her failure to conform to traditional female roles, such as that of wife and mother, Kahlo investigated alternative options. Her physical, metaphysical, social, and genealogical selves--including Lilith, La Llorona, La Malinche, the Crowned Nun, and the Hindu goddess Parvati-- are all on display in her art. Transcending typical biographical inquiries, Ankori has created a broader study of the way in which Kahlo's art both reflected and refracted her multifaceted identity.
Customer Reviews:
About the paintings, not just her life........2002-10-18
Most of the books discuss the life of Frida Kahlo, and rarely mention the meaning behind the paintings. This is not a biography, so if you want to know about just her life I suggest you look for the bio by hayden herrera. I absolutely loved this book. For once, this discusses her paintings and not those of her husband. Frida's life structured her paintings, and though they are self portraits they also have other symbols, that are hardly mentioned. All the different aspects of Frida as a daughter, an artist, a political activist, a wife, a woman and other parts of her self are discussed making this an fascinating insight to her paintings.
Book Description
In this unique full-color book, a cadre of professionals led by Maya expert and best-selling author, John Kundert-Gibbs, team up to share what they've learned using Maya in the CG trenches.
Contributing authors include veterans of such high-profiles projects as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Star Wars: Episode I, The Perfect Storm, as well as animations featured at SIGGRAPH.
Whether you're new to the field or already have solid 3D experience, Maya: Secrets of the Pros offers insights and step-by-step instructions designed to help you build and sharpen a range of critical skills, including:
* Preparation techniques for modeling and animation
* Improving motion capture and lip synching
* Creating crowd scenes from a small number of base models
* Controlling dynamics in plot-driven sequences
* Developing massively complex particle systems for film effects, such as those in The Perfect Storm
* Modeling subdivision surfaces

* Using effective natural lighting
* Writing software for a multi-platform renderfarm
Customer Reviews:
book just didn't provide any detailed.......2006-10-25
I have reviewed this book on several occasions looking for items that could help me do some scenes. I have found that it does very little to help you produce any of the many renders that are displayed. If you are looked for a step-by-step tutorial on how to do these scenes, you are looking at the wrong book. Like one of the earlier reviewer, I too have taught Maya at one of the colleges in the North East.
Second Edition is Average.......2005-05-11
I have the first edition also, and the content of this second edition is ALL NEW material.
Chapter 1 - Maya Cloth - The tutorials include a skirt, a curtain, and accessories (using cloth for animating jewelry and bracelets). Unfortunately, there are no fully clothed figures (no shirts, no pants, etc) so everything is very basic, but explained clearly.
Chapter 2 - Non-Photorealistic Rendering - First example has textures sketched in pen, scanned, and then mapped onto animated models. It creates a unique "hand-drawn" effect, and with some interesting rendering styles. Second example is how to create an impressionistic rendering style. Emit particles from object, make those particles strokes, and play with the render settings. I haven't seen a tutorial like this one before, and it does a lot for making very basic shaded object into a more intriguing render.
Chapter 3: Realistic Camera Movement - The basics of CG cinematography (if you want more on this, I recommend Digital Cinematography & Directing by Dan Ablan). Also goes briefly into camera lenses and focal lengths. The good parts are the long tutorials on Creating Camera Shake and Creating a Handheld Camera. At the end there is a brief tutorial on capturing motion with Maya Live.
Chapter 4: Radiosity, HDRI, LDRI - This is the best and most thorough tutorial on this subject that I've found in a Maya format. Rendering tutorials on a spaceship, a robot, and a katana sword. The chapter ends with a brief tutorial on how to render a detailed, complex scene.
Chapter 5: The Character Pipeline - The information is here is so basic, I think the only reason it would be included in an "of the pros" books is that it has a few MEL scripts. Naming conventions, character sets, and some rigging scripts by the author. Certainly one of the least interesting chapters.
Chapter 6: Hair Systems - This very unique chapter that talks about using Maya Hair for alternative purposes. Octopus tentacles, Rope/wire, Character's secondary motion, and shark animation. Great tutorials for all these examples, which can obviously be applied to nearly anything.
Chapter 7: Dynamics - This is all very basic stuff, with very basic examples (ie a torus lands on a plane, boxes interacting with eachother). Has a couple pages on using Maya Hair and dynamics to make car suspension.
Chapter 8: The Art of Maya Noises - Basic dynamics tutorials. I have no idea why this was in the book. You WILL find better online tutorials because most of the examples are clones of things you will find elsewhere. 1) A water fountain, 2) spinning particles to create a "vortex", 3) a "hermite electric arc" (two spheres with electricity flowing between them). MEL scripts are included for these examples.
Chapter 9: Polygon/Subdivision modeling a character head (cover of book) - Starts out talking about edgeloops -- which has an interesting twist because the character has a "third eye". Draws curves in the front and side viewports using the EP curve tool, thus creating a skeletal/basic cage that will be used as outlines for poly faces (so, it's like NURBS modeling, but poly). Has a few pages about filling in the curves-wireframe, pointing out problem areas (triangles, five sided polys, and "stars") and how to fix them. The tutorial stops at completing the trapezius and neck muscles. No texturing/lighting/rendering discussion is included.
Overall, I was slightly disappointed in this book. Sure a complete beginner would be lost, but for the average/intermediate Maya user many of the tutorials are not worth the pricetag. Before buying this, go to the bookstore and browse through the chapters that sound interesting and see if its worth your money.
Between this and the first edition, I think they should pick out a few chapters of each and make a "Best of" :-)
Review of Second Edition: GREAT BOOK!.......2005-03-02
Disclaimer: While I was a contributor to the first edition, I have no connection to the second edition. Therefore I believe I can speak objectively about this work. I am a computer animator and educator teaching at the college level for the past 10 years.
Maya: Secrets of the Pros-Second Edition is an excellent book! It is often hard to write a successful sequel to a good first edition, but Mr. Kundert-Gibbs and Mr. Derakhshani have hit this one out of the park. They have assembled a list of industry heavy-hitters who can and do speak with authority about the subjects they cover. If I have one criticisim, it is that I believe this book is misnamed. It is really a second volume, rather than a second edition because it contains entirely newly written content. But that is a small criticism.
It is true, this book is probably not for the new user of Maya, but the good news is that this information will stay relevant for a long time, so the neophyte should not hesitate to buy this book along side of say, Maya 5 Savvy. (Please note, I am a contributor to that book, so take that piece of advice for what it is worth!) Indeed, there are some real gems available for the beginner at the beginning of some of these chapters. For example, the beginning animator should read carefully Keith Reicher's CG Cinematography section while modelers will find Tom Capizzi's and Krishnamurti M. Costa's chapter on Advanced Character Modeling to contain bedrock solid information on the preparatory work necessary to create sophisticated models. I should say that most of the book is structured this way with excellent introduction material that rapidly accelerates into advanced instruction.
One thing to note, however, is that in several cases, the authors eschew a step-by-step approach in favor of a detailed concept description for their subjects-the section on creating Impressionistic images through Non-Photo Realistic rendering comes immediately to mind. It seems to me that in such cases, these descriptions are meant to inspire the advanced user, rather than serve as tutorials for the beginner. This can be frustrating for those who go into such a section expecting a tutorial. I believe the authors use both step-by-step and concept description appropriately throughout the book.
The book itself is handsomely printed with color images throughout. Sybex has done an excellent job of supporting the authors with high-quality paper and four-color printing.
I believe that the authors have written a unique compilation of interesting information which will remain relevant for a long. Maya users of all stripes will be taking this one down off of the shelf to find tidbits of information for years to come; I know I will!
This book is horrible!.......2004-12-12
I bought this book the other day and the last reviewer was right. The section on the Perfect Storm covered about as little as what you see in the behind the scenes extras on many dvd movies with special fx. I was highly disappointed. Look around online and you'll find much better tutorials online for free. I also found that many of the other subjects covered in the book can also be found online for free as well. SAVE YOUR MONEY.
Doesn't help you make a Perfect Storm.......2004-07-13
I didn't actually buy this book but spent a lot of time reading it in the book store. I was specifically interested in the section for the particle systems used for a Perfect Storm and sadly found that to be the book's weakest spot. I'm relatively new to 3D animation and fx so maybe I was expecting more explanation then was intended but I would have preferred a specific step-by-step tutorial than the vague trial-and-error explanation that was given in that section. There was a nice simple one-page particle system tutorial in that section that was sort of helpful but other then that I didn't really walk away with the knowledge I was looking for. I did find the rest of the book very helpful. Especially the modelling, texturing and lighting, dynamics, and crowd animation sections. I may buy it some day for those sections alone.
1 star = particle system section
5 star = everything else
total = 4

Dragonball #18, My Review.......2003-03-10
This book is petty good. It's fun to read, yet it just doesn't have enough action. My favorite part is when they fight the cultivars ( Saibaimen on English anime. ) This book is really awesome, especially if you are a DBZ fan. It covers from when Kami'Sama takes Son Goku to the afterlife, to around when Nappa starts fighting Tien. Sorry, but I can't tell you if this manga is better than the anime becausse I have never seen these episodes of the anime. Review Over!
Let's take a break..........2001-02-09
A much more placid chapter in the DB Saga, this mostly involves Earth's Special Forces training for the impending battle with two Sayajins coming to Earth in one year, tipped off by Raditz right before he died...Translation, art, everything's pretty muuch the same. Not as enjoyable as the first, but still fun and interesting. However, there IS a battle at the end of the book, which ends in a nice cliff-hanger, and the death of one of our heros...And, yes, just to remind you, as everyone says, the manga is way better than the show, at least in America.

This book is great! It's a really good Dragonball book. If you have a little kid that wants to get a Dragonball book, get him this one. Some of the other ones have things that might not be too good for little children to see ( vol.1 has some nudity.) I've read it like, 7 times aleady! You should buy it!
the funniest one yet!.......2001-08-01

The Autobiography of a Stuntman.......2005-09-22
Vernon "Buster" Wiles was born in Missouri, raised in Tennessee, and worked as a Hollywood stuntman for twenty years. Young Buster worked as a newsboy and a caddy, and enjoyed sports especially football and boxing. He tells of his job at the Bank of Commerce (pp.20-21). Buster traveled around the country doing various jobs which prepared him to become a stuntman. He had other jobs and businesses; people learned never to cross him (p.37).
Part II tells of his work as a stuntman in Hollywood pictures, and scenes off-camera. Her worked with Errol Flynn and became friends due to their sports interests. Errol's father was a Professor of Marine Biology at Queen's College in Belfast Ireland. Buster tells of his work in "High Sierra" where he played the rifleman who shot "Roy Earle", then doubled for Bogart to fall down the mountain (p.90). His main training was to run seven miles a day. After Pearl Harbor Errol Flynn was deferred due to heart murmur and tuberculosis (kept secret). Flynn did work for British intelligence (pp.112-113). Flynn sold War Bonds, and visited Alaska to entertain soldiers.
Part III tells of his life after quitting the movie business; aches and pains took longer to heal. Buster worked as an agent for jockeys, and traveled up and down the Pacific Coast. His advice for betting on horses is on page 175. Buster loved the excitement of gambling, but his winnings often disappeared as fast as he got them. Buster was shocked to hear of Errol Flynn's death, but he knew he lived fast. The legends about Flynn aren't all true (p.185). Buster wrote this autobiography to correct the misinformation in the CBS film that fictionalized Flynn's life (p.202). He sets the record straight.
The important part of this book is the Appendix by William Donati, who checked the sources for Higham's biography. Wiles told of the lies in that book (p.208). Those who knew Flynn, like David Niven, didn't believe that book (p.210). The declassified documents show that it was not Errol Flynn but Dr. Hermann Erben who was the subject of investigation. There was nothing to Higham's story (pp.211-212). Dr. Erben first met Flynn in 1933 before Flynn began acting in Britain. Higham modified an official document to support his story (p.221)! Donati interviewed Dr. Erben (pp.229-237). Other examples of Higham's errors are given (pp.249-260). If Charles Higham can't be trusted (p.261) how reliable is his story? Does this controversy arise from the uncorroborated writings of Dr. Erben (p.264).
Stuntman: Flynn was a great guy.......1998-03-25
Buster Wiles died just a couple of years after producing his book, "My Life With Errol Flynn," which was written with the help of author William Donati. If you want to see Wiles in action, take a look at the charge scene in Errol Flynn's "The Charge of the Light Brigade." The man leaping up from the ground and remounting his racing horse is not Errol, but Buster Wiles. Wiles' look at Flynn is a loving and respectful one. The two men were apparently good friends, and Wiles was distraught at the actor's death in October 1959. In his book he paints a picture of a lovable rogue who, unfortunately, let his demons get the better of him. Nevertheless, Wiles is extremely kind to Flynn and takes a number of potshots at Charles Higham's asssertions that the movie idol was a Nazi spy. William Donati has also added a section to the book in which his own investigations cast enormous doubt on Higham's allegations. "My Life With Errol Flynn" is good reading for fans of the screen's greatest swashbuckler.

From the Introduction: "Fifty years after the death of the aristocratic Irish entertainer, Percy French, his songs are as popular as ever. He was an undoubted genius in his own field and for generations to come the cheerful brilliance of Phil the Fluter's Ball and Abdul Abulbul Ameer will be part of the world's heritage of song. His light-hearted talent is obvious in this collection of his best-known lyrics."

GREAT!.......1999-04-04
it's a great book if you wanna learn more about the Bible. I LOVE GOD!!!! CHRISTIANS RULE!!
Book Description
Modern life is filled with frustrations -- too much work, too many interruptions, not enough personal time, and an increasing sense of losing control and meaning. "Aligned Thinking offers a simple, sensible remedy. The key lies in three questions: "How do I get the most from the only thing I control -- my actions now?"; "With the many options I have, how do I stay focused on what I really want?"; and "What do I really want from life and work?" Written in the style of a simple fable, the book invites readers to join Ray and Carol Walters as they learn to apply the techniques of "Aligned Thinking to their own lives. Together, they discover how to understand their priorities and develop practical ways to focus on what's important. Equally good for at work or at home, "Aligned Thinking helps partners communicate and grow closer, allowing them to reduce stress and increase productivity, motivation, morale, and, most important, satisfaction.
Customer Reviews:
A heartfelt recapping of why prioritizing matters.......2006-07-13
To determine what you really want and work toward it, use the tools of "aligned thinking" - including the "MIN" or "most important now" secret - to reframe your attitude about your work and personal life. Tying your work to your long-term goals will make you more motivated to do things you once thought of as chores. The secret of success, according to author Jim Steffen, is to make every moment part of your master plan. In other words, "be here now." You have heard that advice before, but this book describes how to apply it. This is a short book (and could have been shorter), but nonetheless, it imparts useful techniques for getting more out of your time and life. Steffen takes you through a basic prioritizing and time management process to help you clarify where you're going in life, how to get there and how your daily tasks fit that goal. We recommend this book to you if you've really never sat down before to figure out your deepest desires and how to attain them.
Telling an Important Lesson Through a Novel.......2006-06-02
This is a self-help business oriented book.
That probably turns you off, it sounds pretty dull, and that it's like about 700 other self-help business books.
But this one is honestly different. It is written in the form of a novel. A two career couple (Isn't everyone these days?) who are buried under work, family and other obligations that seem never ending. They use to-do lists to get things done, but then find that the to-do list is not only never ending, but getting longer and longer.
I especially liked the way it starts out, Ray, the leading character is looking back on his day. 'What have I really accomplished today?' I've asked myself that too many times, I know that I worked hard all day, but what did I really get done?
His approach to writing the book is to make it like an adventure story. Instead of simply dumping his theories out in the open, he leads you through a discovery. To me this makes the lessons he is trying to teach more meaningful, more clearly understood.
Now don't get me wrong, this isn't nearly as good a novel as say the latest 'Harry Potter.' But then again, its point is to teach a lesson, and it does that very well indeed.
Must read book.......2006-04-28
I read this book and it has made a change in my life. I am a Real Estate agent with comstant demands on my time. Jim's use of the MIN enables me to priortize what is most important now and act on that. The concept of a "holding pen" works well as I list everything that needs attention but I don't lose my focus as I have had in the past with a to do list. Lastly, the concept of looking at my MIN throughout the day helps to really stay focused. This is a terrific book and a must read for everyone. Great job Dr. Steffen!
Aligned Thinking is a way of life!.......2006-04-27
I could not DISAGREE with T. Tom more!!
Yes, this is a SIMPLE book, but simple is not SIMPLISTIC!! This book presents in story format a profound lesson for living ones life to the fullest. Although similar to other time management and accomplishment books/methods that tell you to set your goals and plan steps to get there, this is the only one I have found that provides the process to help you understand & envision WHAT you goals really are! In addition it is one of the few that emphasizes the importance of setting goals for your personal life as well as your business life.
Having taken one of the first courses with Jim Steffen many years ago, the Aligned Thinking method has made a tremendous difference in my life; through my years as a corporate manager and now as president of my company. And now this book makes it available to everyone. Read it. Then read it again and again.
One of the worst books I ever bought-AVOID!.......2006-04-19
This book has about enough information in it to be a pamplet. The rest is filler where the author makes up a story about a couple deciding they need some life help and going to another couple who are friends of theirs who in turn refer them to some sort of aligned thinking guru.
The book is simply is not written well and is a very sophomoric effort. Basically anyone with any hint of common sense will already know what this book espouses-to simply make every moment count and do what is 'most important now' to put you in the direction towards your goal. That's it, that's all that is in this book.
I learned practically nothing from this book and feel that it was a total waste of my money and time.
