Informative.......2000-04-04
Charming. Informative. And beautifully laid-out, this is a must for lovers of Judaica, and art in general. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Since 1940 Slim Aarons has been hard at work, first as a war photographer, then with unprecedented access as a photographer to the rich and famous. In this gorgeous sequel to Slim Aarons-Once Upon a Time, he develops the environmental portrait to the level of art, always showing his subjects in their natural setting, in a circumstance synonymous with their station in life. He documented a particular world that is vanished. A Place in the Sun is that special glimpse of privilege under a bright and beaming sky, whether on sandy shore, snowy slope, or elegant home where cares are few. Through 250 stunning color pictures, Aarons provides a veritable who's who of high society: Aristotle Onassis with his first wife, Tina, and their children, Christina and Alexander; C.Z. Guest at her villa in Palm Beach; the Aga Khan at his Sardinian resort; and Truman Capote in Palm Springs. From Mustique to Monaco, from Aspen to Gstaad, only Slim Aarons can take us on a journey to the most exclusive playgrounds of the rich, inspiring even the most jaded armchair traveler.
Customer Reviews:
A feast for the eyes........2007-01-22
Beautiful pictures that tell us volumes about the social class portrayed in them.
Great Work .......2006-07-02
Being that Slim Aarons recently passed away, his work warrants an even closer work. What this book and the equally impressive Once Upon a Time have in common is that they portray true grace, elegance and class that makes todays celebrities look like a bunch of bums.
Farewell to a Bygone Era.......2006-06-03
With the recent death at age eighty of Slim Aarons the end of the time of the 'beautiful people' seems at an end - at least the photo documented class of the rich and famous as seen by the chief photographer of that elite group.
Slim Aarons earned his place in the sun. He was a combat photographer in WW II and after the war in which he lost his twin brother, he simply elected to not look at things that were ugly any more: saturation from the scenes of war played out its dynamic in a distant path for Aarons. He spent his fifty-odd years photographing the haunts of the wealthy and the beautiful, finding the special places, and openly introduced to the clans. He found the elegance of wealth as his subject, photographing beautiful people in their beautiful surroundings. Some would call this a shallow obsession, but his photographs became famous, e.g. Hollywood Legends, Joan Collins demurely stretched out on her bed with her pink poodle, etc.
Now Slim Aarons is gone and with him has passed the time when leisure among those who had it all has been tainted by the paparazzi. Aarons kept it clean and eloquent, and we are fortunate to have this excellent volume of his works as a celebration of his talent. Christopher Sweet is the one to thank for that and he has created a photo album well worth perusing, well worth remembering when times were different. Grady Harp, June 06
Town and Country.......2006-01-21
Slim Aarons really knew how to capture the jet set of a certain era, his images are so well crafted and the lucky subjects are always shown in there best light, literally and figuratively. The best picture in an array of amazing photography, and one that perfectly captures this rarified air, is the iconic picture of CeZe Guest standing by her pool, it captures all you need to know good and bad, through the prism of a beautiful woman, in a beautiful setting without a seeming care in the world, the very definition of, "To the Manor Born". Mr. Aarons captures so perfectly a life of unapolegetic jet setting opulance, and whether he means to are not he also captures the shallowness of it all, and you wonder, with all of this, are these people really any happier than the rest of us?

Book Description
The modern gay man is his own best friend, has healed his inner child, is in touch with the warrior within, has memorized the Kama Sutra, and owns a little black book that would make Casanova jealous. Why, then, do so few of them have the house, dog, Range Rover, and "husband" that so many yearn for?Husband Hunting Made Easy finally reveals the secrets to finding, getting, and keeping the husband of your dreams. From the basics ("What is a husband and why do I want one?") to the advanced course ("In-laws-how not to kill them"), this is the everything-you-need-to-know guide. From blind dates ("Hint: Never let Mom set you up") to dress ("A thong is always wrong!") to avoiding pathetic opening lines ("Care to lambada?"), Patrick Price leads you past the pitfalls and pratfalls of landing the (nearly) perfect man.
Customer Reviews:
Sad, Bad, and not Glad (that I read this book).......2007-08-13
This book is a pitifully shallow and degrading analysis of something that is so important to so many. A true disappointment. On the other hand, if you find yourself liking everything that everyone else likes - in other words, if you're a trite cliche - then this book might be for you. I mean, what kind of a serious author lists a reason for having a partner of, "He'll tell you when you're clothes don't match" or "he'll instantly double your CD collection." If anything, this book helped me understand why I have a hard time engaging in idle chatter about uninteresting nothingness. Maybe it really is them and not me.
A must read for the those searching the stars for Mr. Right.......2002-02-01
This book was excellent. Well written and informative. It give you a step by step of ideas and practices that will help safely guide you through looking, dateing, and keeping yourself in a happy relationship with Mister Wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone, even if you are currently in a relationship, it offer some good advice all around for gay relationships.
Great book with many fine points.......2002-01-31
This is a great book for someone who's just starting on the daring search for a husband. It's laid out in good clean format and written in a concise forward manner. Even with that said the author remembers that any book like this needs to keep it's perspective - and it's sense of humor.
And the sense of humor is what keeps this book moving along. The advice is all pretty much common sense but the author puts it in a form that's easy to digest (as opposed to advice from your friends which is...). There are some very cute and funny bits about how to put up with your future husband's little habits. There's even a section on handling his love of Barbra, or whatever diva he chooses to worship.
While this is a great book, the reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because it's almost like reading the Clif's Notes version of a heavier book. It leaves you wanting something more in depth.
Delightfully Entertaining and Informative.......2001-02-14
Self-help books are usually anathema for me, but this one is a clear exception. Written with uncanny clarity, humor, and seriousness, the book tackles a host of situations and circumstances with a no-nonsense, clear-headed, and right-minded approach. One might quibble with one or two things, but overall, I've not encountered such a refreshing examination of the "gay" lifestyle and its orientation toward making sincere and secure commitments. It's breezy in style, hence there is little condenscension about some more significant issues (esp. when it comes to HIV and all its consequences). Had it attempted to answer every piccadilo, however, it wouldn't be as fun, entertaining, or as overall informative as it turned out to be. This book is an excellent resource for all gay men, offering provocative (and almost always true) observations about being gay (something most of us have not been taught). It is especially provocative and useful for those serious about making commitments.
This book is very simple........2000-08-03
This book is very simple. Just "Do"s and "Don't"s. The life is much more complex and using these "Do"s and "Don't"s make our life very poor and not exciting.

Surviving Hollywood goes to Head Of The Class.......2003-01-21
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Writing Television Comedy by Jerry Rannow, I hoped Surviving Hollywood would be equally entertaining but I was wrong -- it's even better. As a writer, I'm past the days of trying to crack Hollywood but reading about those who have done so successfully is thoroughly fascinating, especially when it's done with so much humor. The writing flows so smoothly the pages practically turn themselves, interrupted only by my own frequent chuckles and belly-laughs. Great read!
In lexicon of show-biz, this book is a boffo winner!.......2002-12-01

Excellent Workbook.......2001-08-31
If, like me, you are a fan of the "Card Play Technique" book by the same author, you will want to work your way through this book to practise what you learnt. If you haven't read that book yet, you are seriously missing out. No one can become a serious bridge player without reading "Card Play Technique" (see my review on the book).
This is written in Victor Mollo's unique style. The hands are not the exotic hands you see in books written to entertain (like "Bridge in the Menagerie", another favorite). Instead the hands are the kind you see everyday at the bridge table. Going through these books has helped me immensely; not only in improving my technique, but also in recognizing which technique to apply to the hand being played. Being able to do this at the table is really what separates the great bidge players from the rest of us!
