A good friend turned me on to Leestemaker after attending an exhibition of his work. This book is my first introduction to Leestemaker, and I'm impressed and inspired. This book is just mesmerizing, full of color pictures of his work to lose yourself in. The richness of his colors and the simplicity of his landscapes are astounding. Great Book for Sports Photography Enthusiasts.......2007-02-19

This excellent book very clearly targets "enthusiast," part-time, and semi-pro photographers taking photos of sports. It's clearly not intended or marketed for the pro, who will know most of what's here, or for the beginner, for whom there's more information than they need. But, for the weekend warrior sports photographer, parent, or person intent on learning and practicing digital photography using sports as subject matter, it's perfect.

The best things about this book are that it is a) filled with sports info from a wide variety of sports photographers each specialized in their own area; b) it is very readable and conversational; and c) written by a photographer who knowledgeably shares his experiences and techniques and doesn't talk-down to readers.

I got a lot out of the general sections of this book, and from the sports-specific sections that interest me and relate to what I shoot (mostly bicycling). It made some photography concepts really clear in a way that I had not found in other books I've read on photography.

It was an enjoyable and informative read and continues to be a valuable reference for me.

Nothing More than Common Sense.......2007-01-31

If you're brand new to shooting sports or photography in general, then this isn't a bad book. It covers alot of the basics acrss different sports that if you'r not familar is a decent introduction. However, if you've ever been on a sideline shooting as I have for the last few years - you'll learn very little new that will make you're pictures better. I learned more in a 20 minute conversation with a real sports journalist than I did reading the book. My recommendation is to rent this one from the library or buy it used if you have to have it. My copy is now for sale on ebay.

20pp on what a great int'l fencing photographer he is, followed by fluff, then a rehash of some digital darkroom basics. Absolutely a disappointment; publisher's marketing group pulled one on us with this title.

Very Useful, Timely, and Accurate Book for Sports Shooters.......2006-08-08

I am a semi-pro photographer and found this book to be very helpful in my growing career. I shoot tennis, soccer, and football primarily, as well as some alternative indoor sports like martial arts, and the techniques presented significantly improved the results of my images.

I especially liked how the author used multiple pro sports photographers -- each specialized in the different sports -- to share their techniques and approaches, yet he maintained a consistent discussion and methodology throughout the book. It really helped that there was so much pro talent talking about how they shoot each sport -- all the other sports books I have seen have been one photographer writing about how to shoot every sport. This book was way more honest and realistic.

I'm a sports photographer and shoot a lot of soccer and baseball games. Of these two sports, I totally disagree with this book's approach. I tried to return this book to Amazon but can't.

Frank Cho's reinvention of the jungle queen. Shanna is found, presumably the result of an experiment, by an expedition. They realise there is something remarkable and that she is superhuman.

In the end, with her enhanced abilities she helps to save them from a marauding bunch of terrible lizards.

Eye-popping.......2006-11-20

Frank Cho knows women, and few comic-book artists today can draw them like he can. For a regular fix of Cho's women (and anthropomorphic animals, if that's your thing), check out "Shanna the She-Devil," an eye-popping miniseries collected by Marvel. Talk about your action-adventure delights. You've got a heavily-armed paramilitary group marooned on a remote island. You've got a Lost World environment, with dinosaurs and other giant predators galore. You've got copious death and maimings. You've got a lost Nazi fortress where scientists labored over illegal genetic experiments. You've got a plague, little medication and dwindling supplies.

And you've got Shanna, a biologically engineered killing machine with a body that ... well, while the dying won't be pleasant, at least the view will be nice as you go.

The nice thing about Cho's women is, they look real. Sure, they typically have a bra size (if they typically wore bras, that is) higher than most folks' IQs. But gravity works, and when Cho's women move, their bits move accordingly. They're also appropriately muscled; no teenyboppers with a waifish bod, spindly limbs and strength like a rhino here. Shanna has muscle definition, and when she lifts a velociraptor and hurls it over a tree, her arms and legs are thick enough to make it look possible.

If you haven't caught on yet, the art in Shanna is extraordinary. And not just because Shanna wears loincloths, either; the characters and settings are realistic and expressive, and the dinosaurs just rock. I mean, there's teeth and claws and blood and wow! Oh, and the story's good, too.

No, really. The Lost World plot isn't the most original tale in the world, but heck, you rarely go wrong when you throw dinosaurs, Nazis and superstrong supermodels into the pot and stir. It's told well, with interesting plot and character development. I mean, I'd read this story even if Shanna weren't so, well, Shanna.

But I'm glad she is.

Visual QuickStart Guide for Premiere 5.1 for Mac and Windows is a handbook-style volume--slightly smaller than most software books, and designed for easy access to the information found within.

This book works. It is built in a two-column format: one for text, one for pictures and illustrations. The entire book reads like a handy step-by-step tutorial. The screen shots, generously integrated into the text, permeate each chapter. The text covers only useful topics and avoids esoteric discussions. Even the closing chapter, "Video and Audio Settings," which discusses some non-Premiere related topics like video interlacing, NTSC and PAL frame rates, and compression settings, sticks to a concise voice yet still conveys plenty of information.

A computer software book without a CD-ROM is becoming more and more uncommon, but the lower cost of this handbook may be the gain rather than the loss. The lack of color pictures, a glossy cover, and an oversized page also help to keep the cost down. In a world where some software books cost upwards of $50 or $60, it is refreshing to see an affordable and useful book like this one.

But don't let the low cost fool you--this is an ideal book for someone who already owns Premiere but finds the tutorials or the manual too daunting. The straightforward and easy-going nature of this handbook can get you quickly up to speed. --Mike Caputo

For the Artistic Filmmaker/Editor.......2000-12-26

There are generally two types of Filmmakers/Editors: The Artistic and the Technical. The Artist knows what s/he wants to accomplish from the get go and just wants to know what the necessary functions are from a program like Premiere to get from A to B - from their head to the screen. Technical types aren't as sure what they want before hand and feel better knowing everything about the tools they use so that out of all the technical options, a creative solution may arise. This book is for the former, the Artists - and it's great. I found Premiere daunting at first glance, but this book set the clear goal of learning how to edit in clear concise steps. I was ready to go in 2hrs. If you want to learn how to edit and edit fast with all the ways thereof, get this book. After you get comfortable here then you can go on to the standard manual for specific advice on things like hardware and capture and all the bells and whistles or you can use the Classroom book. But this book has no lame tutorials - it doesn't need any. For the intuitive creative artist who just wants to get comfortable with the essence of the program look no further (it also sells at a price comforting to most,um, artists : )). However, Techies and hobbyists may be very, very disappointed...

This book makes it extraordinarily easy to both understand and use Premiere 5.1. The organization and flow walk you through the entire editing process, and the formatting presents information in a concise and engaging manner. This book gave me answers for areas where the official manual left me stranded. A must have for Premiere 5.1 users.

A BOOK FOR SERIOUS DEADHEADS!.......2000-04-29

As a long time fan of the Grateful Dead, I have not have read such a book. This book has rare photos and quotes given by the band members and other friends and musicians, spanning from their Haight Ashbury era, the Kool Aid Acid Tests, throughout the 70s and 80s, and the early 90s. Also, on the grayer side of things, tributes to musicians like Janis Joplin and one time organist Ron "Pigpen"Mc Kernan were written,respectively: which is sad, but good reading material. I would say more, but I think that it would be better if anyone who has appreciation for 60s classic rock or for the Dead especially should try this book out for themselves, since there are a LOT more thing in this book than I just said. Like I said, this book is for serious fans of the Grateful Dead.

The Grateful Dead Family Album by Jerilyn Lee Brandelius is the ideal book for anyone who loves the musical heaven, and cultural influences that the grateful dead brought us. You open the pages into a vivid world that shows how amazing this era was. There are thousands of pictures in this book: wavy gravy; mickey hart; phil lesh; JERRY GARCIA; stanley mouse; rock; mountain girl; bill legate, and hundreds of other recognizable faces. Jerilyn Brandelius writes short paragraphs telling stories of these great times, the causes the Dead supported, the concerts they threw, there tours around the world, and many more stories. This is a book that anybody who loved this era and the Grateful Dead, MUST HAVE!

Expensive and Confusing.......2005-09-17

The layout and language of this extremely expensive textbook, written by one of the most seasoned and successful PR practitioners, unfortunately makes this book almost unreadable. Not only is it completely boring, but the language makes the topics seem very vague and disconnected from practical PR practice.

Chapters in this book are much too long. One can infer from the title of the book that it will cover PR practice in great detail, however, the most important topic the book covers "the execution of public relations" only gets 112 pages of a nearly 600 page book.

Practical Public Relations at its best!.......2003-08-09

I've been using this book for about a year, as a professor teaching Public Relations. I like it, and the students always say it's a great book. It has just enough theory, plus a lot of practical application. The high point, and what students like best, is the series of case studies. There's one in each chapter, 20 in all. I know from personal experience, having spent 15 years as a "PR Man," before turning professor, that these cases are real-life examples of what to do, and especially, what not to do! Entertaining and interesting, while still being an excellent text. Much better than other books sometimes used for Public Relations courses.

Seitel Succeeds.......2002-08-20

Practice of Public Relations is laden with strengths. While it covers public relations in a variety of disciplines, such as multicultural, and it covers a variety of case studies, such as the infamous Exxon Valdez disaster, its sheer strength lies in its writing style. Seitel's style is quite distinct from many other texts, whose writers preach the importance of writing, but fail to practice it. Similar to Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired, Seitel understands that a message will have less impact if the message is difficult to comprehend. Both Levine and Seitel make a welcome effort to rely on a friendly, warm, and inviting writing style, one that engages the reader.

Practice of Public Relations strives to keep up with an ever-changing public relations landscape. While releases retain their importance, it is equally important to consider video. Similarly, the target public may not be any one demographic, but a multicultural one, each with its own concerns, preferences, gatekeepers, and trusted sources of information. Also, the book takes into consideration the synergy of integrated marketing communication. Public relations does not operate in a vaccuum, and Practice of Public Relations takes that into consideration.

Above all else, the book lives up to its title, explaining the practice of public relations rather than being a lengthy tome on the theory behind the practice.
