Inspiration to create Less is More.......2007-01-08
Not being a fan of the current swathe of "bling bling", it was a treat to discover this beautiful book. If your seeking instructions and how to directions don't buy this book, if however you wish to gaze at the work of universally acknowledged artisans spaning 7 decades, this is a brilliant book. The book in itself is minimilist in verbiage, however it amply pays homage to one of my favourite pieces of jewellery, the ring. Proving that good design is timeless and speaks for itself, this book will be at home in any jewellery designers home or studio.
Great Reference.......2006-10-22
This has turned out to be one of the books I keep in my studio at all times. The work shown is of that of notable, internationally known, jewelry makers and metalsmiths. Much of the work is so achingly gorgeous that it makes my teeth hurt!

Minimal Rings.......2006-08-22
This book is a "must" for anyone with a love of jewelry! It is a beautifully done book to stir and inspire the imagination of the viewer.
Becoming prevalent in the 1930's, the minimal art movement encompassed sculpture, painting, architecture, jewelry and other art forms, following Mies van der Rohe's statement that "Less is more". However, Gregory discovered there were no books written on the movement as it affected the design of jewelry. This book is a chronological and pictorial history of minimal design in jewelry, as exemplified by the work of 140 international artists. One will be amazed to discover that a ring made by Fritz Schwerdt in 1930 looks as current in design as one by Fritz Maierhofer made in 2003. Gregory's own definition of "minimal", which he applied in writing this book, is " a limited amount of ornamentation or embellishment". The works include materials both precious (gold, silver, gems) and common (acrylic, iron, rubber), and show amazing variation despite their simplicity. A special threat is the author's own work that is included.
The presentation of the work stays true to Gregory's minimal philosophy. Most of the rings are shown on a black background, including only the most pertinent information, allowing the rings to speak for themselves. Of special interest is the index, which pictures the rings next to photos of the artists who made them.
By all means, treat yourself to this elegant book showing ring design in it's purest form.

Making Documentary Films and Reality Videos is the perfect text for students of filmmaking who would like to make a documentary. Barry Hampe, who has made more than 150 documentary films and videos, traces the two main approaches to documentary--recording behavior and re-creating past events-and shows students how to do both effectively. Covering all the steps, from conceptualization to completion, the book includes chapters on visual evidence; documentary ethics; why reality is not enough; budgeting; and casting, crew, and equipment selection.

Great Introductory Book.......2007-03-31
I took a two week documentary filmmaking course recently and this book was our text. The majority of the class had no prior experience with making a movie of any sort so this book became our life. I felt it was very easy to comprehend and gave ALOT of great advice. For those who did have experience in filmmaking, which included shooting, editing, and distrubution, this was a refresher for them. Overall I'd say it was a great reference book to rely on.
More like "documentaries for dummies"........2007-01-05
If you have absolutely no experience whatsoever in writing to tell a story, filmaking, photojournalism, videography or communicating in any significant way, this book will be helpful if you're suddenly called upon to produce a documentary film or video.
The advice given here is very basic and really doesn't have all that much to do with making a documentary. For example, Hampe describes the roles of the people who might be found on a typical documentary crew, such as the scriptwriter and camera operator. In sum, this is really a book that describes the entire process of creating a documentary from coming up with an idea, capitalizing it, putting a crew together and so on. It really is for someone who has absolutely no experience whatsoever - and while there are many people who may dream of making a documentary, this book will not provide them with the experience they actually need.
The book is also increasingly outdated. Almost all of the technology Hampe describes for lighting, capturing images and sound, editing has been superceded.
The good thing about the book is that it is thorough: Hampe really does cover every step. But its odd that a book on documentary and reality video creation has not a single illustration. Very strange. Another thing in Hampe's favor is his writing style. Except for way too much patting himself on the back for his own work, Hampe writes in a clear manner.
Overall, this is a quick read and useful to those who have no experience whatsoever with the film making process, but have dreams of making documentaries. This book will not really teach you anything about actually making a documentary, but it does an okay job of describing the process.

good book.......2006-08-24
great book for his main points regarding the style and elements one should have in the documentary, mostly revolvong around the point of not having too many 'talking head' interviews and 'showing' the point more,,, the book isn't relevant at all regarding technologies, however, as it seems to be written before 1998 or so,,, but it's probably helpful to see everything from the past,,,
overall a great book, i think, for someone like me who is just starting out and doesn't know where to begin,, this book definitely has given me a great idea of the directions i want to be heading in,
A very helpful introduction to the world of documentaries.......2006-07-03
I found this book extremely useful and does as it claims-- covers all aspects of documentary production. Although written intially before NLE, it has adequately been updated to cover NLE. I found the planning part very useful but had to make my own notes to organize the author's thoughts. Otherwise would have deserved 4 stars.
Understandable.......2006-04-04
This book was an invaluable reference when I found myself (unexpectedly and quite unwillingly) involved in the production of a documentary. I'm a CPA-turned-housemover, and I could understand it. Enough said.

Quality over Quantity.......2002-12-22
Rather than containing a lot of shorts and fillers like the other Simpsons Comics books (which are fun, too), The Best of the Best includes 3 super length comics all of which are very well written, imaginative, and hilarious. Here's what you get:
"Comic Cover Caper"-Bart uncovers Comic Book Guy's scam to secure a steady supply of over-priced, defective comic books in his store. Bartman must take on resident bullies Jimbo, Dolph, and Kearny while learning a little about the American market place in the process.
"Where Stalks the Penalizer!"-Mysterious things are happening to Springfield's vandals, loiterers, and hoodlums. The perpetrator is known to the media simply as "the Penalizer." A defender of justice for everyone (even for those who sometimes beat him up), Bartman pursues this force of disciplinary evil.
"When Bongos Collide"-Itchy and Scratchy pop out of the Simpsons' television and wreak havoc at the nuclear power plant! You'll never guess the reaction! Super size comic strip of over 60 pages!
Bartman Rules!.......2000-06-09
It is just like the tv show. If they ever run out of ideas just use stories from the comic book series. My favorite story is the Penzalizer.
It's SUPERIFFIC!.......2000-04-24
Bartman, The Best of the Best is the Simpsons tailor-made for the superhero fan! Hilarious for fans of American comic books!
Awesome.......1999-06-27
This book is very good! It is just like the show, but in type!!
not very funny.......1999-02-06
this book is not near as funny as the show. I like the show much better

TRULY TASTELESS...TRULY FUNNY !.......1997-08-25
Well, I bought this gorgeous book in Ljubljana's publishing house at the end of 1995 for my close firend who is M.D. (for a Christmas' gift - very convenient). I waited for it for about three months because they ordered it from one London's bookstore but all the troubles were worth it. My friend and I both read this book and we sure had some good laugh... Though I sort of expected that he wouldn't be that moralistic about certain issues... I always thought that MDs are used to EVERYTHING (ya know, what I mean, hm?). However, we both rate this book very high and since it has been bought it passed through MANY MANY hands. Perhaps you will also hear from these readers soon!Too bad that this book isn't available right now. I'm thinking about buying some more issues since I have many friends in white... and I would like to have my own issue as well! Many thanks to Blanche Knott, she did a wonderful job

This Book Needs to be in Print!.......2007-05-22
This is a fantastic book, and it really fueled my budding interest in the noir canon. When Meyer wrote this guide, a lot of these movies were just unavailable to most viewers, but DVD releases have made a lot of these films cheap and easy to find, so the book is even MORE useful now! Meyer writes clearly and well, and his reviews provide a lot of information without spoiling the plots. I especially appreciated his pointers for women viewers of noir; I would never have found films like Mildred Pierce without his guidance! Buy his other book, 101 Films to Rent..., but do yourself a favor and get a copy of this one, too. If you are reading this, Mr. Meyer, make them reprint this book! Film buffs need you!
Delightful introduction to film noir--highly recommended.......1999-08-19
This is a fond and engaging look at the dark world of film noir. The book is full of great movie reviews and interesting tidbits.
My only minor complaint is the lack of video product code numbers to enable the reader to track down VHS or DVD copies of the movies mentioned in the text.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning more about the world of film noir.
TURNS "LOST WEEKENDS" INTO NOIR EVENTS!.......1998-06-02
I never get depressed.Well, almost never. Maybe three, four times a year. When it happens I don't leave the house and submerge myself in countless videos. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to discover Meyer's first book "100 Great Films" and how even more excited I am to know Meyer might be on to a series or something with his latest "A GIRL AND A GUN," especially since I'm no film expert and have made countless mistakes renting unknown videos recommended by unknown sales clerks. In fact, I am probably the exact person for whom Meyer has written his books. Let me tell you about this past weekend when depression hit with a vengence. It began Friday night when I came home from work exhausted and cancelled all plans knowing I was going under. I browsed through Meyer's book, called up several stores and by midnight I had gathered up La Femme Nikita, Laura, An American Friend and The Third Man. I started with Laura on Saturday morning. I wanted something old and romantic, where women are idealized, idolized and elegant. So what if they have "no personality of their own," as Meyer writes, men adore them! That's what I want to see - a man inflamed by love!,not to mention beautiful clothes, fancy apartments, lunches at the Ritz and super dramatic lighting! and Laura has it all! Then, thanks to Meyer's great guide I rented An American Friend, mostly because I love Patricia Highsmith and her Tom Ripley character and had never known (until Meyer's book) he/it had been made into a film, by Wim Wenders no less! Oh,was it good! Dennis Hopper plays Ripley nothing like Highsmith wrote it but who cares he's so, so good! As Meyer so marvelously describes him,"there's Ripley (Dennis Hopper): a speed freak, a hustler, a stylish, rootless hustler with the attention span of a gnat, the arrogance of a vampire, and the aggressive instincts of a wolverine." Sunday morning begins with The Third Man because I adore Graham Greene and Orson Welles, and because Meyer's Mood! Guide tells me this is a "Witty thriller of moral decadence, where intrigue and broken hearts abound." Once again, Meyer's guide and comments are right on! and finally on Sunday night I end all this movie madness with La Femme Nikita, which I adore because I have dreamt of being a female action hero myself and it just doesn't get any better than Anne Parillaud! By Monday morning I feel absolutely great! Empowered like Nikita, elegant like Laura, ready to return to work!
Best Book on Film Noir.......1998-05-02
Being in the film industry I have seen many of the greats in film history go down the drain while the box office blockbusters rein. Meyer's first and second books bring the art of film making back into perspective. He offers up "the" guide that supercedes the the majority vote (Those guys that loved "Titanic" and "Dances Like Wolves"!) and brings us back to the true artistic talant of Hollywood. Funny, insiteful, and concise. Get it!
Best Noir yet!.......1998-04-29
Not recommended for the terminally dull and humorless. This book is funny, easy to read and comprehensive. Not as dry as most noir books and the mood guide, as with Meyer's first book, is a great help. I like to know if this is a date movie! Photos and captions are wonderful. I am giving them away as gifts to friends shut in with kids; makes raising kids more than bearable - even enjoyable. Thanks for bringing Ida Lupino back into my life!

Book Description
When Black Is OK!, Andras Adorjan’s first book, was originally published in 1988, it became an immediate bestseller and a cult classic. In this follow-up, his message remains just as emphatic: too many chess players adopt an unnecessarily defensive approach with the Black pieces. Instead, they should strive immediately for double-edged positions with winning chances. Adorjan offers concrete opening variations and illustrative games to support his claim.
Customer Reviews:
A very good book, but a very bad proofreader..........2005-03-25
This book is a sequel to "Black is OK", a book that I never read but became something of a cult classic. I bought this book because I had seen some positive reviewes somewhere.
Reading the book, you get a distinct feeling of Adorjan's passion for his topic, and he does so in a way that is both enthusiastic and infections. But the book has one MAJOR problem. And actually, the proofreader isn't the problem -- it is that someone didn't check the "global replace" feature. All throughout the book, every instance of the word "black" is in ALL CAPS... It is humorous and cute in some places, but rapidly grows old and turns into a distraction from the fine work Adorjan did in putting this book together. Although it is annoying, I still recommend this fine book and I hope that it does as well for Adorjan (a fellow Hungarian! :) )as his other book has done.
The Don Quixote flag on the cover is cute, too. And it's in BLACK...
