Book Description
The technique of collage has been incredibly influential in 20th-century art. This publication examines the ways in which the potential of collage has been exploited by a broad range of artists, and looks in particular at the work of Peter Blake. One of Britain's most popular artists, Blake is also an avid collector, and has curated the show at Tate Liverpool that this publication celebrates. He has sifted carefully both through the works at the Tate and through his own fascinating collection to reveal the dispersal of collage in very surprising directions.
Peter Blake: About Collage opens with an interview in which the artist discusses his own use of the technique, his influences, and his many collaborations with musicians, writers and performers. An essay by Dawn Ades explores the history and significance of collage from the early 20th century through to the present day, and investigates the impact of collage in the work of artists ranging from Kurt Schwitters to Joseph Cornell and Tracey Emin.

Great guidebook, a must read.......2007-09-23
If you are going to make a video which tells a story (even if you are gonna just post it on youtube), please read this book. You'll benefit a whole lot from it and your video will look better and will make more sense to the audience.
The best book available for learning Classic Film Storytelling skills.......2007-08-03
When I was just starting out as an animation storyboard artist, this book was recommended as "THE BOOK" for learning the language of film storytelling. It is clear and well-organized--with no fluff or nonsense. The principles are timeless, and since it was written at the tail end of the Hollywood studio system, it does not fall into any of the bad filmmaking traps that started to pop up in the late sixties. The photo illustrations are perfectly-suited to communicate the important points of clear storytelling.
In 1994 this book was long out of print, and I paid about $150 for a used copy...so be very happy that this is once again available, and at a reasonable price!
Some thought on Five C's.......2007-05-23
I find it absurd and utterly ridiculous that some reviewer were disappointed of this book because it doesn't contain "cutting edge 21st century" imagery from the latest hollywood blockbusters. What those people would expect? That the book is filled with tons of star wars production shot? I'm glad that the pictures are B&W, at least they don't distract the concentration.
I cant say more on behalf of this book more that others didn't say before me. The book is great. A must have for everyone interested in cinematography. For those lacking "better" pictures I suggest the various comic books and the kind of "how star wars was made" type books.
Great stuff simple and effective.......2007-01-17
I don't see how anyone could be disappointed with this book. The pictures are dated, but the techniques are as up to date as ever. If you film you should have the 5 C's memorized and they will become second nature to you. This book is inexpensive enough that everyone should have it in their collection. After I read this book I thought maybe I should sell it, and then decided no, this is one of those classics worth keeping and is a handy reference. It's packed with lots of tib bits of information. Well worth the money, worth reading, and worth highlighting and worth it as a reference.
Read and heed for better production.......2007-01-17
Written more than forty years ago, you can only add to this book. The techniques discussed are classic, timeless, and undisputed. That which can be added to the book is a result of having a solid grasp of the book. In other words, break the rules with a purpose that works.
Read the book then read it again, and again. If you are an experienced filmmaker, use it for reference and as a reminder. The book creates an awareness of what works, what doesn't, and why. A thorough understanding of the principles will allow you to side-step many pitfalls in pre-production, production, and post-production.
Because of the amount of information presented, I think the book would work well as a curriculum textbook. Setting up the techniques in a lab/studio situation would be to the benefit of almost everyone entering the motion-picture/video field. Until then, get the book, read it, and heed it.

so much potential lost (nothing to do with translation)..........2004-01-18
I was very excited at first with this series. Looked good, sounded good, as fare as I could tell translated well, and the first volume was great! But, (yes but) it completely let me down with volume two. It was so pushed, cramped and out right bland and more. At first read great, leave it at that though. Disappointing!
Highly Different--Try it!.......2003-10-05
From the moment you first open the book, you'll see it's like no other. Sure, manga plot is often recycled, with suicide, wars, and really magical swords being especially popular, but Baby Birth is none of these. It's a fantasy manga, with the Apocalypse of the world on the brink of the horizon, but it's not what it may seem. The drawings are excellent--the artist really put a lot of effort into making this manga top-notch, and if you're one a fan of Planet Ladder or even Clamp, you should get this book. Like now.

Not much about Sex Lives of Popes.......2007-06-06
This book concentrates mostly on the sex lives of political officials and priests as well as the policies of some popes. It has very little to do with the actual sex lives of popes while they were popes.
Here is what he says about Clement XIII on page 257:
"The most intolerant pope of them all, Clement XIII (1758-69), ordered nude statues and paintings - including the frescos in the Sistine Chapel - to be covered up"
And on page 126:
"Clement VI began a period of unbridled luxury."
How shocking!!! It has little to do with the Sex Lives of Popes.
Half of the popes' sex lives dealt with are ones who were legitimately married and he has basically nothing to say about popes after 1800, except for on page 264:
"John Paul II ... was rumoured [sic] that he was married and widowed." Really?
Cawthorne has a field day with Alexander VI, the most infamous pope of all time.
Sex Lives of the Popes -- a Fascinating Read.......2006-05-21
The author managed to keep an excellent sense of humor throughout the entire book, starting from Peter and ending with the late Jean Paul II. Fascinating, revealing, exposing -- great in one word.
Taboos are shattered, beliefs given new horizons. I recomend this book to any reader. Interesting read.
I liked the phrase "Julius II was an insatiable bisexual"...
"Holy" Mother Church: Under the Scope.......2002-09-22
Perfectly easy written for the common reader. Whoever is an open minder or wonder about the teachings of the church should read this book. The Catholic church is going under a struggled to keep its believers and this book tells us why. The writer tells us about the influence Queens had over the popes and how poorly Popes were following the church's own rules (orgies, murder, money, same sex lovers...etc.) just to have the power the position of a Pope had. However, somethings have change within the church now our days. Priests are still longing for a normal sexual life while keeping their faith to God and their preaching, but since celibate is still a mayor rule for priests, they find themselves commiting crimes involving children and honest belivers. Nothing is being heard about orgies anymore or about homosexual popes or about queens ruling over popes. On the other hand, I must recognized the work the two privious Popes have done for the church and its integrity. I just hope that the next pope follows the truly believes of Jesus for the sake of us and reforms the Catholic church. I truly enjoyed this book because I was on guilt stage for being lesbian and not following the bible or attending mass. Now that I know I'm not worse than those popes, I feel more confident as to what to respond to anybody who says homosexualism is a sin. I recomend this book to everybody!
selling licenses for keeping mistresses.......2001-12-30
This book emphasizes on the attitude of the popes towards the sex lives of their priests. Many popes were concerned with the celibacy of their priests and forbade marriage for priests. However, they used to sell them licenses for keeping mistresses. Usually, they were prepared to tolerate priests who kept incestuous relations with female relatives or raped women in the church. "When a woman fainted during confession and the priest seized the opportunity to rape her, the Inquisition found that this, technically, was not a case of soliciting." The pope's only concern was that priests would defile the sacrament when handling it afterwards.
The passages about the sex lives of the popes themselves are mainly based on hearsay. Cawthorne accuses several popes of incest with either their sisters or bastard daughters, like pope Alexander VI Borgia, who retired with his daughter to "an interior room and remained locked up together for more than an hour". In secret she gave birth to a baby that was hidden, but that doesn't prove that her father was the father. Many other popes seem to have had preferences for young boys, prostitutes or sex-and-food orgies in general.
Despite many unproven accusations, the book clearly shows that many popes were mainly concerned with their own pleasures and did not give a damn about Christian values. Anyway, the book is good reading stuff.
The "Mother Church" and the reality it denies.......2000-06-23
"Sex Lives of the Popes" reads fluidly and easily. Others may find that a weakness in the lack of endless "scholastic" efforts to document every work by reference to "previous scholars." Well, for the minority among us who are "academia," that may be of interest. But for the ordinary reader, there is sufficient substantiation, and the book retains its vitality instead of succumbing to mind-numbing scholarly endedavor. It's real, and revealing, and surely an anathema to all the scholars of the "Holy Mother Church," to which the work may lend a new meaning. If one isn't a hidebound statistician, or a blindly faithful Catholic Cleric, then this book will be a great source of wondrous information, with relevance to the religious events and practices of the past centuries as well as to the present day's less than presentable (reported and unreported) practices of many of the Church's selected clergical leaders. By all means, everyone should read this book, in the interests of presentation of all the facts, whether they agree with the book or not. For example, do you know why the new pope must sit on the "saddle" before he's confirmed by the Cardinals? And did you know that there was a female Pope? It's a great book. Rush out and read it.

Book Description
Mike Figgis is known for his iconoclastic portrayals of outsiders. Stormy Monday (1988) depicts a janitor turned jazz club partner while in Liebestraum (1991) two affairs shed light on a 30-year old murder-suicide. But it was with Leaving Las Vegas (1995) that Figgis became a household name. The wrenching but compelling story of unconditional love between two lost and disenfranchised souls. Sera, a prostitute, and Ben, an alcoholic, stumble together and discover in each other a respite from their unforgiving lives.
Book Description
Leaving Las Vegas, the first novel by John O'Brien, is a disturbing and emotionally wrenching story of a woman who embraces life and a man who rejects it, a powerful tale of hard luck and hard drinking and a relationship of tenderness and destruction. An avowed alcoholic, Ben drinks away his family, friends, and, finally, his job. With deliberate resolve, he burns the remnants of his life and heads for Las Vegas to end it all in the last great binge of his hopeless life. On the Strip, he picks up Sera, a prostitute, in what might have become another excess in his self-destructive jag. Instead, their chance meeting becomes a respite on the road to oblivion as they form a bond that is as mysterious as it is immutable. Leaving Las Vegas tells a powerful story of unconditional love between two disenfranchised souls who connect for a fleeting moment.

Bovie.......2006-08-15
The movie based on this novel is good. The book is also a good piece of modern naturalism and stands on its own as a unique entity.
Readers who saw and liked the movie first are likely to also like the book. For me, at least, reading the book didn't attenuate my later enjoyment of the movie.
Book movie book, blah. It's just good writing. If you've neither seen nor read this work, take your pick, enjoyment of the one is a good indication of how you'll feel about the other (and this is a rarity in the book to film adaptation cycle).
"He was a star. Now he is a case.".......2006-03-21
If you have seen the movie "Leaving Las Vegas", forget it ever existed and pick up the book. As with many cinema hits, the book is much, much better than the movie script.
Sera is a contented hooker in Las Vegas. She has a nice place of her own, a job, and an independent life filled with a comfortable routine. With a past of degradation and a brutish, deceptive pimp in Los Angeles, Sera realizes her life is now normal and easy. She has long since come to terms with what she is and how she wants to live her life.
Ben is an alcoholic who embraces his disease. After living the normal life, even the high life, Ben has figured out what really matters; the here and now. For Ben, the here and now is becoming harder and harder to live inside the boundaries he has chosen. Now unemployed, he has become a clock-watcher, in tune with the timing of alcohol service in the state of California and dreaming of Las Vegas where the serving never stops. Ben does not try to fool himself or anyone else, he knows that his trip to Las Vegas will be his last one.
Ben and Sera meet by circumstance, Sera's old pimp arrives and tries to force her back into his lifestyle rather than hers. Ben feels the need for warm company as he falls down his spiral staircase of alcoholism. Both Ben and Sera know the outcome of their desperate relationship, and deal with it in different ways as the spiral becomes nothing more than a pinpoint.
Don't look for answers from Ben or Sera, they don't have any. This is a tale of degeneration and not redemption. There is no happy ending, and no real bursts of insight, just the erosion and eventual collapse of flesh that has lost its humanity.
The four chapters in the short book (189 pages) alternate between Sera and Ben. Sera's initial chapter I thought to be a tad presumptuous, the author attempting to bring about a dreamy, surrealistic view to his words that did not quite cut the grade with me. But by the following 'Ben' chapter, O'Brien's words and prose begin to make sense, and Ben tightens down what could have developed into a windless ramble of eccentric prose.
'Leaving Las Vegas' is a shockingly realistic portrayal of alcoholism, and the careless ennui that accompanies the blackouts and embarrassments. Charming at times, horrific at others, 'Leaving Las Vegas' is anything but boring or average.
Forget the movie, it wasn't worth the celluloid used to make it (plus Nicolas Cage and Elizabeth Shue were completely wrong for the parts of Ben and Sera), but pick up the book and totally immerse yourself in this sad and yet somehow sweet love affair. Enjoy!
alcohol.......2004-11-16
I think the film is better than the book. neither seem to me to be a love story. the film focuses more on Ben, perhaps because of the stunning performance by Cage. For me, the strength of the film is showing how alcohol drags people with it: Ben, the alcoholic (the scenes when he moves out of his flat - added in the film) are gut-wrenching) and we see that Sera needs him because he gives her someone to look after (even if that isnt what he wants). So much has been written about relationships where one partner tries to stop the alcoholic drinking. Sera doesnt because that is part of the bargain. interestingly, the film puts the rape scene just after Cage has moved out- showing the downward spiral she is lead into. It shows how her attempts to have a "nice" time are frustrated by the drink (the casino, the outing to the desert) beacuse what Ben really wants is to drink himself to death.
This is really a review of the film. It is stunning, and I am amazed that it is currently out of stock in the main distrubution outlest (though not amazon)
I have given the book 4 because it keeps a separate structure for both characters while the film links them almost from ther start. I would give the film a 5+

Book Description
Within the parameters of their collective life experiences, Sarah and Jonathan formed a spiritual union of unrealized aggression and misunderstood passion that defied external norms and observation. Romeo and Juliet they were not. They were a twisted abstraction of wild roses and desperation-beauty in its own right-fleeting but mesmerizing in its explosion of petals and blood. Jonathan is Marsupial Man. He drinks too much, can't write worth a crap, and likes to discuss politically incorrect topics. His girlfriend, Sarah, calls him a marsupial (among other things), and their relationship is based more on sex than love. Yet, amid the smoky haze of his joint, Jonathan often likes to think there might be more to life than what he's experiencing right now. And that's when he and Sarah, along with their friend TJ, decide to kill something, believing death will bring new meaning to their otherwise mundane lives. But where to begin? Cats in a microwave are too messy, and boiling small rodents just isn't acceptable. Besides, they don't have a strainer anyway . Armed with wasted intelligence and a plethora of philosophical jargon, the three embark on a tenuous journey of self-discovery-and annihilation.
Customer Reviews:
I'm the author.......2007-06-02
"Marsupial Man" is flagitious; my wife found that word, and it's appropriate. "Marsupial Man" doesn't fit into a genre, so I'm creating one -- flagitious prose.
This book isn't pretty, but there's nothing graphic. It just unrelentlessly shoves the everyday brutality of what some sick individuals do unto others. The language is not sensitive; I chose to use a lot of obscene language because that's the language of the characters. The obscenity is not gratuitous. But rest assured, it's prevalent.
Unlike the book I'm working on now, there's humor. Granted, the humor in "Marsupial Man" is dark, but there's an attempt to attack political correctness. There's an attempt to expose some basic observations that I've made throughout my life and career, and political correctness just doesn't work -- a spade is a spade. Society needs to get over making things sound pretty in an attempt to avoid offending others.
That's my opinion, and I'm comfortable with it.
You, the reader, will be challenged. Plenty of people have completely disregarded this book as crap, and that's fine. Not everyone will like this book. I'm pragmatic; I understand. Look up "Marsupial Man" in the Kirkus Review web-site. It's scathing; I'm not hiding. But I'll go on record with this: the VA Tech Massacre was pointless. 32 dead and for what? There's no rhyme or reason. It just was -- a brutal and overwhelming, "a pointless blood bath."
Others have embraced this book. Months have passed since its release and I've had the pleasure to meet a couple people at an art gallery in my town that sells "Marsupial Man", the Kronos Art Gallery, who were strangers to me; they appreciated what I did. I left with a sense of validation. I won't lie, I needed it. This book has altered some of my relationships; i.e. some relationships have ended.
No one has challeged the actual words, grammar, etc. The content has offended. The subject matter has offended. So be it. There's nothing in this book that hasn't happened a thousand times over the course of humanity. Once again, to be honest, I'm sure this book isn't the specimen of perfect literature.
This book will never be an American classic; Oprah will never feature it in her book-of-the-month club. I wrote from the depths of my often confused and dismayed soul. Sometimes, alcohol was involved. Regardless, I remained true to what I was writing.
Thank you for yor time,
PSM
Marsupial Man is different.......2007-03-31
I'm writing this again because it seems my first review failed to post.
It's a weird book, but I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting; it's short. But, it's to the point.
That Sarah, what a hateful bitch. I'm a woman, and I hated her.
Regardless, this book had me thinking about a lot of things.
I can't recommend Marsupial Man enough. It's not for the sensitive. At times I was almost offended, but I think I understand what the author was trying to do. It does challenge your sensibilities.

Book Description
This fascinating cultural history of music in Los Angeles focuses on orchestral performance from the late nineteenth century through World War II. Decentralization defined Los Angeles's growth since the late nineteenth century, and because the central city did not dominate the city's music culture as was the case in cities of the East and Midwest, a greater diversification of music emerged. Performers and audiences included Latinos, Euro-Americans, Asian Americans, and African Americans, but the notion of diversity in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century city went well beyond ethnicity--it also included a "media diversity," as the city's musical output was presented through a variety of channels including recordings, radio, and film. These media strongly influenced the musical culture of Los Angeles, which in turn influenced the musical culture of America at large as the city grew into the nation's epicenter of entertainment. The book features a CD providing examples of much of the music examined. In addition, there are further support materials on the author's website: http://faculty.ulv.edu/marcusk

Groundbreaking Look at Music in Los Angeles.......2006-12-19
Given L.A.'s prominence in the world of modern entertainment, it's surprising that an historical look at the history of music and musical institutions in Los Angeles has not been written before Kenneth Marcus's excellent new book. Much of Marcus's scholarship is fresh and revealing and the results offer a much needed re-evaluation of the too often underappreciated or overlooked cultural history of the City of Angels.
