Best Photo Cropping Book Yet!.......2007-08-30
I have been an avid scrapbooker for years and have yet to find a book that uses the pictures as the true page focal point instead of adding embellishments.... until I saw this book! There is page after page of unique ideas for cropping pictures that will guarantee that your pages will stand out from all the others.
*SCRAPBOOKERS* use those scissors with CREATIVITY !.......2007-08-02
Ever hear of *SHEAR-CROPPERS* ? "Creative P.C. (Photo Cropping) for Scrapbooks" is a book crammed with examples of "creative cropping" - - including new twists & challenges. My favorites are weaving, vertical panoramas and kaleidoscope mats.
Patterns can be imitated or cleverly adapted for using your own treasured photographs. The fun is in trying out all of the different effects. Only in a "How-To" book would so many fill consecutive pages, but finished products can also be framed as gifts, &/or placed as decorative accents in homes.
The book is obviously not the work of one individual - - many have worked together to demonstrate ideas for cropping in distinctive ways that will liven the pages of scrapbooks. It is all part of a thriving industry whose many enthusiasts love to learn & share new techniques. Even in the very small (15,071) Indiana county where Reviewer mcHAIKU lives, there are two shops and one 'commercial' individual in the largest town (population: 826)!
This shows that you can get help anywhere to produce *BLUE RIBBON scrapbooks* - - and especially by using books such as "Creative Photo Cropping." (mcHaiku: 8.2.07)
Wonderful, especially for apprentice scrapbookers!.......2007-01-29
This book is well worth the price. It offers many unique ideas. It has the basics for your beginner scrapbookers, but is full of challenge ideas for apprentice or even seasoned scrapbookers!
Simply the Best.......2006-09-11
An excellent book for all levels of scrapbookers, but especially so for those who are just beginning. Well done.
Refreshing new ideas for the medium-advanced scrapbooker!.......2005-11-30
I have looked and wasted so much money buying scrapbooking books here and there for these tiny bits of "goodness" in them. When this book arrived I realized I finally found a true inspiration book - no fluff, no fillers, no really basic-how-to-scrapbook instructions. Everytime I open this book I become entralled with the examples....(Ooohhh, I NEED to do that next time...WAAYY TOO COOL!).
If you are a beginning scrapbooker - this book is not for you. The methods of cutting or cropping are better left to those who've gained experience with cropping photos and using a paper trimmer. A better book for you would be Scrapbooking for Dummies (covers a wide variety of basics) or a class.
However, if you treat your paper trimmer like a third arm and are quite comfortable with it - you've got to get this book! Well worth the price even at full retail!

Book Description
Long adventures and short stories featuring Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck, the Beagle Boys, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and other Disney characters. In "Antidollarosis," the Beagle Boys infest Scrooge's money with a bacterial blight... that creates allergic reactions in Scrooge whenever he comes near it. In "A Job Too Well Done," it's Gyro Gearloose's task to rid the city of excess snow. "The Grouch Kings of Duckburg" matches two fan favorites: writer John Lustig and artist Daniel Branca. The feathers fly when an angrier-than-ever Scrooge matches wits with uber-grump Prunepuss J. Crabapple. In "Pearls of Wisdom," when Scrooge's giant pearl bin vanishes from his treasure room, Scrooge wonders where it's gone... but how could anyone steal it? "Race of the Snails" ties in with the start of Formula One racing this month. With millions at stake, Scrooge and a Texas oilman compete to come in LAST in a very unusual sports car competition. Finally, "White Gold" is a winter's tale in which Scrooge stores huge quantities of Gyro's super ice on top of his money bin... with extremely messy results.

Try Rebooting Yourself: A Dilbert Collection (Dilbert Book)

Book Description
Voted Internet Magazine's Cool Site of the Day, winner of the Talespinner Award, Daryl Cagle's "Top Pencil" Award, and The Medaille d'Or for Site Excellence, Peter Zale's Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet has taken the Internet by storm and is now making its move to newspaper syndication. This alternative comic strip will be making the unprecedented move from the electronic underground to the forefront of comic strip mainstream this summer and includes new, never-before- seen material. The strip appeals to techies and non-techies alike with its unique blend of geek savvy and techno-phobic attitude. Techies Unite centers on a beautiful and brilliant computer geek who at twenty-four runs the information systems department of a large company. Peter Zales's strip brings to light the comic ironies about humankind that have come about due to the rapid advances in technology.
Customer Reviews:
Nice, but "organized".......2007-03-30
At the time, this was just a fun book; now it's a fun remember-when book from before the tech bust.
The only thing that I dislike about the book is that it's been "organized" by theme -- whether or not that means breaking up a story arc. It's rather disruptive, especially since the drawing style changed quite a lot (and generally for the better) in the early days. So you're cheerfully reading through a story, and BAM! You're back to scribbles and your story arc is nowhere to be seen.
If Peter Zale ever resurrects the strip, I hope that he'll consider a more chronological approach to future books.
Hilarious!.......2001-11-20
"Techies Unite" is the only book of its kind. Having been in the tech world for some time I have often felt and sensed the things that this book treats on. I'm amazed actually that someone out there actually wrote all this stuff down and used it so well. This guy knows this business. At least he seems to know me.
I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who knows anything about the tech world. It's hilarious and true. And Helen is a totally cool and unorthodox character. Nothing like her I've ever seen.
The soul of the Techie.......2001-08-20
Helen captured my heart when I first saw the comic strip because Peter Zale had first captured the soul of the information technology guru. Helen is the spiritual embodiment of those of us who competently labor to keep the information infrastructure running while constantly enduring the overwhelming "lost in the wilderness" dependency of the know-nothing "Wharton School of Business" idiots who surround us and unfortunately are ultimately responsible for our pitiful paychecks.
If you like Helen you have to love this collection. Starting with the first Helen ever and following with the best of the best of the strips. Be careful where you take it though. I am ordering my second because I happened to show my first to the (female) instructor of a technology class I am taking, and the minute she saw it, I had to give it to her to under threat of instant flunking if I didn't.
For those of us on the tail end of the Boomers or the X and Y genners who take fast processors and instant access as our birthright, Helen is our icon. This book is the PERFECT thing for taking a break when you finally look away from the monitor after four hours of serious debugging (or playing Doom, whatever).
yuk.......2000-12-22
The guy who draws/writes this strip doesn't appear to know anything about office life, computers, the Internet or women. And oh, yeah, he doesn't know anything about humor, either. And his people all look like botched versions of Kermit the Frog.
readers unite!.......2000-06-28
Peter Zale's "Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet" is a very cool strip. Gotta love Helen--so nice to see a strong female character with mechanical ability for once.
Grouping the strips into categories was a smart move on the author's part. Makes this book more readable that the usual book of comic strips.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent presentation of music for healing.......2005-01-07
Susan Mazer and Dallas Smith are musicians who have gifts for music in words as well as in playing their instruments - reflecting a healing presence through the instruments of their personhood.
Each speaks for her/himself, creating a pleasant discourse, stimulating tension of similarities and differences, and harmony in their coming together to share their explorations of bringing music as healing into medical environments that ordinarily are stressful and anything but healing.
Mazer and Smith describe how they birthed and are maturing their skills in using music in hospital and other healthcare settings.
Excellent presentation of music for healing. The authors are sensitive to the healing qualities of the instrument that is the musician - through which the music flows. Reading the book is a healing experience in itself.
Sound decision.......1999-12-21
Mazer and Smith have written a book which will help each of us as professionals and "ordinary" individuals understand how to create a sound and healthy environment around ourselves, so that we can communicate better and function better in our family, workplace and community. The alternation of the personal insights and history with solid professional and experiental research is a pleasure to read and offers each reader something new to think about and something old (in their own life) to understand. The power of music to heal and noise to hurt are clearly delineated, and the author's analysis, suggestions and recommendations are laid out thoughtfully and helpfully. Having the CD available to illustrate some of their concepts helps integrate the experience of listening with the joy of reading this fine book. Whether teacher, medical professional, musician, architect, parent, business person, it will be a "sound decision" to buy, read, and use what you have learned from "Sound Choices".

Teaches you how to think logically..........2002-05-06
Building Left-Brain Power is somewhat of a bittersweet book because of it's inconsistency throughout the entire book. The
book begins with "easy" logic puzzles such as unscrambling words
and such and ends with the hardest logic puzzles which are
code-breakers.
The book provides a preface at the beginning of most chapters
to give you help in trying to find a logical way of thinking to
tackle a particular problem. This quality I found to be unique
and very valuable as opposed to most books with logic puzzles
just poured in there and leave you frustrated because you can't
figure them out.
Here's what's horrible about this book though. There are type-o's
in the answer keys (which I was amazed at how terribly obvious
they were considering they were not caught before publication). I only spotted two obvious ones though.
The other thing that drove me nuts was that there was no logic
whatsoever to explaining how they arrived at some of their
answers. Many times, I gave other people the problem to look at
WITH the answer that I had looked up and asked them to figure
out how they came up with that answer...no one knew. Was it
another type-o? No clue.
This book has some great qualities, and some terrible qualities
which I thought averaged it out to a 2.5 star book, however, I
rounded up because of the very inexpensive price.
UNBELIEVABLY GOOD.......2001-02-22
I am currently using the book "Building Left-Brain Power" in my homeschooling activities, and was planning to complete one chapter per week with my 10-year-old daughter Jasmine, but she loves this book too much to put it down! We started on Monday and have already finished 2 chapters. I'm really looking forward to the number exercises. I love math, and can see that all three of my kids will do really well if we continue using the same type of challenging exercises together in school.

Victim of Backstabbing? Smarten up!.......2006-08-21
There are not enough words to describe how useful and educational I think this book is. After having been backstabbed on my last project I have recognized how damaging it is to not want to or be able to succeed in the craft of office politics. I have read and absorbed every page twice on my first read which will not be my last. I was deeply impressed and inspired by the information and samples presented on every single page. My goal is not to become a selfish office politician but to be able to further my career (not only) by fending off my adversaries with ethical politics and defense mechanisms. "Winning Office Politics" is the right tool for that task.
A Key Resource on Mastering Office Politics.......2005-08-31
This book is one of two key resources I recommend to my clients, in my capacity as a professional motivational speaker. The other is:
The Secret Handshake: Mastering the Politics of the Business Inner Circle
by Kathleen Kelly Phd Reardon
As a set these two books cover the fundamentals of mastering corporate and office politics, With Dr Reardon's Book covering the Big Picture and Dr DuBrin's covering the details.

A Winning Playbook for Office Politics.......2004-09-05
Simply put, this was a very well-organized, comprehensive, straightforward though plainly-written book about corporate politics. If you want to avoid political blunders, outwit opponents, and survive career setbacks, then there are chapters for you here. If you're ambitious, there are chapters on grabbing power and influence, as well as chapters about devious techniques that may be used against you and how to defend against them. Yes, corporate politics can seem petty at times, but unfortunately it's a reality. And given increasingly competitive work environments, this book should have something for everyone, from powerless office minions to the most Machiavellian managers.
On the plus side, the book is comprehensive, well structured, and makes a good reference. There are many sub-sections and very descriptive section headings, so you can easily find a section that applies to you. Also, you can absorb most of the main points by just by looking at the section headings. The supporting text is clearly written, and contains mostly examples.
On the downside, the text itself isn't particularly lively - the prose is plain, factual, and straightforward, so while it's not difficult to read, it's slightly dry. Next, given the very strong outline and descriptive headings, you could skip the text & just read the headings and get just as much out of the book. So in retrospect, reading the entire book seems redundant. Also, if you've worked in corporate America a while, many of the suggestions aimed at novices will seem blindingly obvious (i.e. don't yell at your boss). Also, a few of the supporting examples seem ludicrous -- for example, on p. 103, he recommends that if you want to impress coworkers at the office picnic, you should bring an extremely attractive person as a companion, "even if you have to rent one." This hired help then is supposed to flirt with your coworkers and flaunt their looks. Suggestions in this ilk are in the minority, though.
If you're still not sold on this book, then here's some of the tips Dubrin goes delves into that may interest you:
First, one should size up your boss, understand his/her objectives, get him/her on your side, be loyal & help him/her succeed. To grab power, he recommends that one should look powerful, network and form alliances & coalitions with powerful people, target getting key jobs and roles that control important corporate projects. To impress superiors, one should shine at meetings, be cool under pressure, be polite and loyal, and flatter your superiors without being too obsequious.
DuBrin also outlines how to avoid basic blunders such as bypassing your boss or yelling at him/her, being disloyal, complaining about an ex-boss or old employer, deviating too far from custom or organizational beliefs, dumping well-connected people and burning your bridges. Instead, one should be a consistent performer, in control of ones emotions, appear committed to the job & your organization, be visible to upper management. One should also find a mentor, toot your own horn softly, take sensible career risks, work for a strong boss and help him/her succeed, and avoid weaker managers. Additionally, speak directly & honestly, stop malicious gossip and rumors, resolve conflicts early, and share credit, information, favors, gossip, and recognition. During career setbacks, one shouldn't panic, but should get support from others, sell yourself to people who can help you, and take action to plan your comeback.
For the Machiavellians out there, there are chapters that outline devious tricks, such as backstabbing, double-crossing, discrediting your rival, stealing credit, exclude rivals from meetings or abolish their jobs or transferring them to "corporate Siberia," giving negative references, and giving self-serving advice. Dealing with difficult people also poses a challenge, and DuBrin's strategy is to leverage their weaknesses, taking over part of their jobs, and to give them negative but honest feedback either individually or with a group. To defend against retaliation, he recommends exposing dirty tricks and confronting critics who bad-mouth you.
Overall, I think this book would make a good reference for anyone working in an office. I think it can provide lots of tips for novices, and valuable reminders for corporate old-hands. It's well-organized, comprehensive, and straightforward, despite a few negative points. Recommended.
Fantastic, REALLY COMPREHENSIVE Book!.......2003-10-04
The most important thing to know about this book is that it is REALLY COMPREHENSIVE. Not only does it cover everything you hope it does, but it also covers it from BOTH the perspectives of lower-level employees, and higher-up employees.
I bought this book after finding out that working hard, and STAYING OUT of office politics was getting me NOWHERE, AND HURTING MY CAREER. Especially since I work in an organization where it seems that office politics is all that many employees are thinking about! The book discusses the ineveitability of office politics, and gives you an extensive test to find out how "political" you are yourself. The results surprised me in that I was not quite the "dolt" I had previously presumed myself to be!
Once you have examined your own potential at office politics, the book tells you every possible strategy to get on your boss's good side, and every possible strategy to gain the support of lower-ranking people, as well. One example they gave that I would NEVER have thought of is to pay careful attention to whether your boss prefers written, or oral, communication. I never paid attention to that before-I was giving my boss written memos, because written information is more comfortable for ME, when he prefers to hear things ORALLY.
The book then goes on to describe techniques to grab power in an organization, how to use political information, devious political tactics, political blunders, outwitting difficult people, bouncing back from career adversity, surviving a corporate takeover, and defending yourself against unfair politics. It discusses ALL of these topics from the perspectives of lower-level,mid-level, and upper-level positions. So no matter if you work in the mail room, in the executive suite, or anywhere in between, this book is for YOU. One of the best, most comprehensive books I've recently read.
Self Improvement?.......2001-08-11
Working hard, keeping your nose clean and the promotions will come and you will be successful. NOT. The book is filled with REAL LIFE EXAMPLES of why working hard doesn't always work. This is the best book on the market today if you want to protect what you have and earn what you deserve. The book will also help those who want to move ahead and steer clear of the traps and potholes. Very easy to read and apply.
