4 out of 5 stars Diverse and rich artwork.......2004-07-31

An allure of this book is the many (206) illustrations of art from the kingdoms of west and central Africa. Of these, some 140 are in full colour and show the impressive skill of the court artists.

In Benin, Dahomey, Yoruba and other kingdoms, there were flourishing scenes. Each distinctive and fascinating. Readers may be familiar with the centuries of European artwork and how these varied between those countries. One thing this book makes clear is that central Africa had an equally rich and diverse history that, sadly, has not been often recognised by outsiders.

The book can be read at several levels. The first and most immediate is simply an appreciation of the illustrations. A deeper level is to integrate that visual appreciation with an understanding of the cultures from which they derived.

5 out of 5 stars excellent, difficult to find quality like this........1999-02-12

One of the finest books on African Art I have studied. I showed my copy to a business assoicate from the Republic of Congo. She is from the Kuba tribe and deals in art from this area. She asked me to get a copy for her work and a friend of hers wanted another copy. If the African people approved of the book, what else can I say. Top reference book.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, fascinating photos, detailed text, overview weak.......1998-12-12

This is a rare good book. We have too little exposure to the great arts of Africa; this book is a remedy. ABy linking the art chosen to the royalty of West Afarica kingdoms, whe illustrates how close the connections were between power and art; power including raeligious and ritual power as well as temporal. The book lacked only an overview analysis to tie all the sections together amorae firmly.

          5 out of 5 stars Mystery Revealed.......2004-09-22

As a proven do-it-yourselfer, I can recommend reading this material for understanding light ratios used in high key lighting. Over the years I stumbled with this and never figured it out on my own. I managed to achieve a style by accident but I never did find the right combination for glowing white portrait lighting. Now I have read just some of the first portion of this book and find it so very worth my money to have this explained to me I look forward to reading the rest and testing more.

I have learned portrait technique from some great professional photographers and I never uncovered this info until reading this book. My equipment is professional, my comfort with my skill level is moderate/intermediate but I am producing professional looking work with knowledge like this. Thanks to Norman.

            Book Description

Please Don't Eat the Daisies has sold millions of copies since its original publication in 1957. It became a film in 1960 starring David Niven and Doris Day, and a television series in 1965. Now you can hear why many consider Jean Kerr to be one of America's funniest writers. In this unique collection of essays, Kerr captures the perils of motherhood, wifehood, selfhood, and other assorted challenges. Listen and learn "How to Decorate in One Easy Breakdown" and how to drop those unwanted pounds with "Aunt Jean's Marshmallow Fudge Diet." Please Don't Eat the Daisies strikes modern listeners as particularly funny because these feminist issues are still relevant today. 2 cassettes.

I came to this book by way of the film. The book is a delightful set of essays about raising kids (boys), buying a home and working (writing). The book stands the test of time well, continuing to be funny and relevant. The book's only problem is that it is too short!

            5 out of 5 stars How times haven't changed.......2004-04-12

It's remarkable how undated this book reads: children are still driving their moms crazy, husbands still have jobs that wives have to work around, and women still have to fit their jobs around the rest of the family...Kerr writes about domestic life, work life (although she was self-employed as a writer, she didn't seem to have tons of free hours to devote to her craft-- and most of her plays didn't do that well; she is roughly comparable to an affluent working mom of today, doing many jobs, but none of them especially well). What I love most about this book, in these days of articles on supermoms and the "mommy-wars," is that Kerr doesn't pretend to be Mrs. Perfect, or even Mrs. Tries So Hard. She admits she wants to sleep till noon; and she is a faithful attendee at nearly every play her critic husband must review, because, as she puts it, "I have four young sons, so naturally I need to get out a lot." Funny, relevant, and somewhat neglected among the canon of humor writing--when WILL women be allowed to be funny?

5 out of 5 stars Please do read this book.......2003-11-04

An hilarious collection of essays by Jean Kerr , playwright, wife and mother. Very funny and unsentimental accounts of family life, full of wonderfully quotable lines. For instance, when she speaks of looking for a larger house "I wanted a house that would have four bedrooms for the boys, all of them located some distance from the living-room - say in the next country somewhere". Her comments on theatrical life are as funny as her comments on family life, as when she observes that the failure of a play, according to the producer, is always to be blamed on "that first-night audience". She understands children better than any child psychologist, as when she observes that you should never say to children "Are you trying to drive your poor moomy smack out of her mind?" Of course they are, but do you think they'll admit it?" A funny, funny book.

            5 out of 5 stars a laugh riot!.......2000-10-04

well, maybe my title is going a bit too far, but this book has long been one of my favorites. it is not a well known book, despite having had a tv show and movie based on it. i think it is sad, since this collection of stories deserves to be known by all. it is not deep reading, by any means, as the title most assuredly reveals, but it is fun reading, reading that will take your mind off things. the stories in this book are a collection of jean kerr's various magazine articles reflecting on her life, her family, and the always amusing events that surround her. this book may have been written in the fifties, but most of the things she discusses still occur today in everyday life. i recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a lighthearted laugh and a good read. you won't be sorry you took a trip into the garden. (gosh that was a bad pun!)

Every screenplay needs an attention-grabbing beginning and a satisfying ending, but those elements are nothing withour a strong, well-crafted middle.

1 out of 5 stars I feel ripped off by the publisher.......2007-02-20

The best thing about this book is its title, long and promising. The good part ends here.

The worst thing about this book is that it doesn't deliver what the title promises. I thought it would be a complete book with strategies, structures and examples, about "Building conflict and tension in my film script".

Reality is that this is a collection of scattered thoughts, general advice, some easy analysis on well-known films... but seriously, nothing that you cannot find in any general screenwriting book.

So get this straight: by no means it is a serious book with will grant you a better comprehension of the hard-to-write second act, nor will it help you build conflict or tension in your script... Unless you are a real novice screenwriter.

As other reviewer pointed below, also the shortness of the material is appalling, hidden by big fonts, wide margins, big pages, cheap paper, etc.

This has happened to me with other book by the same author, "Writing the killer treatment". I really don't know how the publisher, Michael Wiese who has so many good books on the subject, can publish this mistifying book.

So there is not a good book on the second act yet. Problems with the third act? Try Yanno's "The third act".

5 out of 5 stars Lock down your fiction-screenplay.......2005-02-17

I bought this to write a screenplay for my book, but it helped get my creative juices flowing for my novels. Where my middle was floppy, it's now tight and tense, where my characters were lethargic, they are as animated as one might be after a lengthy stint at Starbucks. In short: it's a MUST!

4 out of 5 stars Writing the Second Act : Building Conflict and Tension.......2002-01-12

I have been writing for about 7 years. I've read many of the popular screenwriting books by Syd Field, Linda Seger, Chris Vogler, and oh yeah The Screenwriter's Bible by David Trottier. The are a very good but none of them has crystallized my understanding of the second act like "Writing the Second Act" by Michael Halperin. We all know that plot and structure are an important part of a screenplay but what makes the most memorable screenplays? ... Characters that you can live through... characters that take you on the emotional roller coaster. Michael Halperin's book shows you what you need to do in the second act to create juicy characters with depth - buy the book you won't be sorry.

1 out of 5 stars Offers no insights.......2001-07-28

I really have to go side with the disappointed people here.

The second act is often called the "mountain" that screenwriters have to climb and it is indeed a daunting task. So any offer of help is much sought after.

A total novice screenwriter might find this book of interest, but a writer who knows the basics and looking for tips and insights particular to the second act will be sorely disappointed.

The section on building conflict can be summed up as "Building conflict in the second act is a good idea. Here are some examples of conflict in the second act...."

As I read this book, I became angry at the almost blatant disregard for the intelligence of the reader and I only finished it in order to be qualified to offer a review.

The fact the type is presented in a large size, double spaced and with thick margins shows that the printers knew they had to hide a lack of content.

2 out of 5 stars No help here.......2001-07-11

Apparently, the one thing harder than writing the second act is writing a book on writing the second act. The authors gives some examples of good second acts, uses wide margins, and there you go, a book about writing the second act. Or so he claims.

Imagine a race of lycanthropes so devious, so cunning, and so insidious that they conquer entire kingdoms without ever being seen. These are the wererats. Their secretive broods infiltrate key posts in the government, military, and guilds, ensuring political protection from their enemies. When fighting can't be avoided, the mystic Council of the Flesh unleashes its horrific cross-bred monsters, which never give a hint as to their wererat origins. When nothing else works, the hard-hearted Weavers spread filth and disease, eliminating entire cities with a single contaminated breath. Kingdoms fall, power changes hands, and the enemies of the wererats are exterminated, without a single outsider ever knowing how.

This book uses the 3.0 edition of the d20 rules set, and is fully compatible with the world's most popular role playing game.

Much updated from previous editions, David Gladstone's useful text provides a very cursory survey of deal and investment techniques, albeit for slightly later than "sexy" stage deals. However, as this book is designed for the novice, and as Lipper's text has fallen out of print, this sadly remains the only general text on VC investing for the inexperienced, and is useful in context of the level which it is designed to educate. While the many checklists may be somewhat annoying to seasoned VCs, they are probably indispensable to the novice investor, since they provide a summary framework when working through deal and business terms. And while the book is designed more for later stage (through certainly not LATE stage, as some have alluded to) deals, the book is, again, designed to educate the novice venture investor, who really shouldn't be doing high tech start-ups anyway. Irrespective of that, anyone who presumes to write a text on investing in high tech start ups would likely find his text applicable only for the next few months after printing. Ours is an industry that evolves very quickly, and changes rapidly in accordance to the latest trends. No one can teach you how to pick the winners in the trend that hasn't happened yet. Getting the basics from a text like Gladstone's, however, can give you the fundamentals on which to build that "knack".

This book is a thorough, practical guide to the nitty-gritty of venture capital investing. This comprehensive, well-organized instruction manual summarizes the homework you should do before you make a venture capital investment, the paperwork needed to carry out the investment and the ongoing work you will have to undertake to have a prayer of seeing your investment pay off. If it is a little plodding, you can understand why. It covers a lot of ground. The authors compare venture capital investing to a partnership at one point, to a marriage at another. They don't attempt to sell you on venture investing. In fact, by telling you how difficult and labor intensive it is, they may even drive you away. We believe this book definitely belongs in the library of anyone who has ever taken a serious interest in venture investing. It will also help entrepreneurs who need venture capital financing by showing them how to evaluate their companies according to the criteria that serious investors are apt to use.

                                    4 out of 5 stars VC Basics.......2004-07-12

5 out of 5 stars Start With A Strong Foundation.......2002-08-14

After reading some previous previews, I thought it would be appropiate to respond. One reader stated that the material in the book was updated with old school material and a lot of check off list and did not focus on the big ticket deals. Well, no one book will contain every little detail of the business in all reality as some may desire. This books provides a great foundation or a starting point for the industry of venture capitalism. Anyone that masters with basic material will have no problem using common sense to build upon this knowledge with current issues of today. Besides, the author enclosed contact information for getting more information about venture capital training or information within the book. Let me close with this, if you are serious about learning about the venture capital industry then this is a SUPERIOR book to begin with. And if you become an astute student of venture capital industry then obviously this book will only be the beginning stage of your venture capital education. And also this book is great for entrepreneurs!(Understand those whom you plan to deal with$$$)...

3 out of 5 stars Conservative, old-school material, mostly checklists........2000-07-09

This book is not geared toward modern, big-ticket, ultra-risky venture capitalists. You won't find any eBay case studies here, nor any advice on how to finance such.

Instead, the author's focus has a small-time, mezzanine debt flavor. Think lower-risk, low to mid-tech deals; smallish companies, such as printers, with existing business models and revenue streams, in search of expansion capital.

The proposed structures are safe (secured, convertible debt) and the bulk of the book consists of due diligence checklists.

The writer's conservatism is both the virtue and the limit of this book. Depending on your needs and beliefs, you'll find it either reassuring and methodical, or stodgy and old-fashioned.

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, not those serious about private equity.......2000-01-26

This book is good for beginners who want to know more about the VC process, but it needs to be updated for modern practices. It also needs to be edited for gramatical errors, which I found unacceptable given the price of the book.

If you are truly interested in private equity either as a student, angle investor, or professional, then I recommend a book by Josh Lerner: "Venture Capital & Private Equity - a Casebook". It is very thorough and modern.
