Book Description
A full-color trouncing of the Bush dynasty from cult-favorite Village Voice cartoonist Ward Sutton, Sutton Impact brings together for the first time the artist's hilarious, irreverent social commentary and his vivid poster art. More than 200 pieces document the flights and folly of an era, from politics to popular music, excoriating the USA PATRIOT Act, John Ashcroft's evangelical songwriting, the Democrats' domestic blunders and much more.
Sutton is one of the country's most acclaimed political cartoonists, in a group with Tom Tomorrow, David Rees and Ted Rall. Sutton Impact includes a section of post-election cartoons from late 2004 and early 2005.
Ward Sutton is an illustrator whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Nation, George, Esquire, Time, Sports Illustrated, Entertainment Weekly, The New Republic, Premiere and elsewhere. His weekly strip has run in the The Village Voice since 1998. He lives in Manhattan with his wife Sue.
Customer Reviews:
How does he do it?.......2007-02-21
That is the question. How does Ward Sutton manage to continue to come up with good ideas for his weekly cartoons? And by good I mean fabulously funny and incisive cartoons, week after week, year after year. For those not familiar with Sutton, his politics are well to the left of center, which means he's as eager to skewer Democrats as well as Republicans. No one gets off easy within the borders of a Sutton cartoon.
Ward's Cleaver.......2005-07-09
Back in the 80s and early 90s when I was the staff political cartoonist for City Pages (now owned by the Village Voice) in Minneapolis and saw Ward Sutton's early comics in the Twin Cities Reader, I was not impressed. I never even bothered to pick up the TCR to look at his work, only looked at it when I saw a copy laying open at the laundromat or coffeeshop... But today he has evolved into by far my favorite comic artist. The work he has been doing for the Village Voice for the past few years is the best political comic art in the country. I show his work in the cartooning course I teach at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design as exemplary. It isn't exactly "political cartooning" and I would rather the term "political comic" be used so as not to totally snuff out what little is left of the former art form. Whatever you want to call it, it is inspired, expressive and direct from the gut. (Frankly I'm amazed the Voice would use anything this good!) My hats off to him for finding a way to use comic art to make incisive political commentary in a time when the traditional one-panel political cartoon has all but croaked.
Above all, good move getting out of Minneapolis, Sutton!
Finally, the collected works!.......2005-07-07
Though not all-inclusive, this volume gives readers a chance to enjoy Ward Sutton's distinctive take on current events (and excellent artwork) all in one place.
Out on the Left Coast we don't get the Village Voice, but I've enjoyed his panel comics in The Funny Times and when I've run across them in major publications.
Sutton is a gifted cartoonist whose work I've been able to follow since he drew the weekly strips for our college newspaper.
Get this book, you won't be disappointed!

Let's be honest..........2007-09-04
So. I've never wanted to pay for membership on the SG site, but I've always had an attraction and fascination with the whole punk/goth/indie/alternative type of look. So when this book was released, I jumped on it.
- The photos aren't very artistic. They're simple and straightforward, shot with a standard digital camera.
- It's arranged rather simply, with little or no thought to the placement of the images. (Usually two images side by side per page)
- True, you can probably find a lot of similar images on the internet.
- Some of the girls are absolutely beautiful, but I find some rather unattractive.
- The quality of the pictures is rather poor, since the original intent of SG was purely online. So the change from pixels to print never translates well.
- There's very little about the girls themselves... just short, self-written bio's on some of the girls in the back.
- Let's be honest... you're just buying this for the boobies of cute indie chicks... and that's okay.
After a couple viewings, it doesn't have a lasting effect that the likes of Tony Ward or maybe Richard Kern's work might have. Less art and more taboo. It's an inexpensive book, so if you're into the whole naked chicks with tattoos and piercing, I'd say go for it.
Deflated fan.......2007-07-01
The was fine...and thats all....sorry to say
I have been a Suicide Girls fan from the moment i stumbled across their site.
I expected the book to make me go WOW, most of the picvtures were known to me. some were quite ordinary
even for me....a die hard fan it was hrd to find the WOW Factor.
I dunno..............2007-06-19
To each their own,"beauty in the eye of the beholder", & all that.I find this a bit of a yawn - funny how all this leather/tats/piercings/etc seems to symbolize having a "free mind" nowadays. You see this all the time now, these daring "non-conformists" conforming to the hipster wannabe Ideal.Seems so uninspired and well, boring.Again,to each their own.....
Suicide Girls book review.......2007-05-13
This is such an amazing, artistic book. For anyone who is seeking a deeper level of beauty than the plastic blonde bombshell look we are constantly exposed to, this book is awesome. The pictures are well done, and the girls rock.
Join the site instead.......2007-01-23
So why doesn't this book feature big, fat, ugly girls in its photo sets? It's a common criticism of SG, meant to negate its artistic merits. First, the obvious answer: it's erotic photography, meant to entice, arouse, et cetera. Featuring unattractive, unarousing models is obviously defeating the purpose. Sound shallow? It is, but let's not fool ourselves; this is altporn we're talking about. Secondly, anybody who makes this argument has misinterpreted SG's goals. "Redefining beauty" doesn't mean turning ugly ducklings into swans, but rather, to accomodate an alternative market that has been largely ignored up until this point.
Beauty is still beauty.
All that being said, however, this particular book is a rather unremakable collection. Though the website itself is spectacular and features some amazing sets, this book was published before Missy and co. really found their trademark visual style. There's way too many bedroom/domestic shots, rendering the entire collection rather monotonous. Still, it's definitely worth a look, if not neccessarily a must-have.

Book Description
James Sturm pens this richly evocative graphic novel set in the 1920s. The Stars of David, a barnstorming Jewish baseball team, travel from town to town earning a living by playing local squads. They all sport beards, a gimmick to attract patrons but when financial difficulties threaten to end their season they cast their lot with a Chicago promoter who has just seen the hugely successful German silent film Der Golem... With the golem, a baseball game is transformed into a mythical pageant. Fear and curiosity fills the stadium, but it also stokes the flames of anti-Semitism. Winning the game for the Stars of David becomes less important then surviving it. With a sepia-tinted cinematic style, this compelling book reminds us that making it home is at the heart of baseball.
Customer Reviews:
An Amazing Piece of Americana.......2007-06-16
While baseball stories set in the early 1920's can ring false with nostalgia at times, Sturm has crafted a beautiful allegory about a busload of travelling Jews. A great book for baseball and comic fans alike, soon to be collected with other James Sturm works in James Sturm's America: God, Gold, and Golems.
Get yourself a Golem.......2006-03-09
Author: James Sturm
Genre: Graphic Novel
Plot Summary:
Noah Strauss, known as "The Zion Lion" during his brief stint with the Boston Red Sox, is now the hobbled manager and number three hitter for The Stars of David, an independent "Jewish" traveling baseball team. Baseball was truly America's pastime in the days of Prohibition, and a good team with an intriguing gimmick, skilled players, and some marketing savvy, could make a good living by busing through small towns and taking on the local teams. The Stars have plenty of talented players, but they are missing that extra element of spectacle that can draw the really big crowds. They are barely scraping by and suffering from low morale. Their bus is in a sad state, they are forced to sleep in cheap flophouses, and they must endure the racial bigotry that follows them everywhere they go. Just when things seem to be at their worst, Noah is paid a visit by the fast-talking baseball promoter, Victor Paige. After taking in one of their games, Paige has decided that The Stars could pack the stands if only they had a Golem in their lineup. Paige goes on to explain that a film featuring a Golem (an enormous mythical being of Jewish legend) is captivating audiences in New York City, and his agency has obtained the original costume used in the film. If the Stars' hulking African American clean-up hitter, Henry Bell, would don the costume he would be sight to see. Noah reluctantly agrees to go along with the scheme after initially rejecting the offer. Paige immediately begins to hype up the arrival of the Golem in the town of Putnam, where The Stars will battle the local "All Americans." In his fervor to create interest in the game, Paige fans the flames of anti-Semitism within the community by playing on their fears and misconceptions. At game time, the stands are filled with a tense, angry and vocal crowd.
Geographical Setting: Michigan; New York City; Greenville, NC
Time Period: 1920s
Series: Part of the "American Trilogy" (non-sequential)
Appeal Characteristics:
This story takes the reader back to the days before steroids and million-dollar contracts, when ballplayers struggled to make a living playing the game that they loved. There is a mood of stoicism that runs throughout the story, as the hard-nosed players struggle with a hardscrabble existence on the road. Baseball fans that long for the purity of old-time baseball will love this book. The prose and the illustrations are clean and spare, reflecting the tone of the story. The action unfolds quickly and compels the reader to turn the page. Though this is a short book, the author does a good job of creating characters that have a depth of personality. Anyone with even a passing interest in the history of baseball will enjoy the terrible and fascinating anecdotes that these characters relate to one another.
Read-Alikes: Fans of the writing style and artwork of The Golem should check out Above and Below: Two Stories of the American Frontier (2004), by James Sturm. These two stories complete his "American Trilogy," and showcase more of his stark and understated illustrations. God's Man: A Novel in Woodcuts (1929) by Lynd Ward, will offer similarly dark, colorless, and striking images. For more on traveling teams of the 1920s, see Alan J. Pollock's nonfiction book: Barnstorming to Heaven: Syd Pollock and His Great Black Teams (2005). This will convey the racial bigotry encountered by minority ballplayers and share some great old-time baseball anecdotes. The Celebrant (1983, novel) by Eric Rolfe Greenberg, gives a realistic portrayal of early 20th century professional baseball. It also deals with the issue of Jewish assimilation. The Southpaw (1953, novel) by Mark Harris, concentrates on the gritty life of a pitcher who is trying to deal with the ups and downs that come with playing professional baseball. It is not as fast-paced as The Golem, but it is a gripping read and is narrated in a laconic tone.
Red Flags: Profanity; racial bigotry; racial slurs; some violence (off stage); alcohol consumption
A Home Run.......2004-07-25
The Golem's Mighty Swing works both as a tale of Prohibition-era barnstorming baseball and as a tale of ethnic relations. James Sturm sharply observes the baseball details, including a number of interesting and authentic-sounding anecdotes about the game. And by telling the story through the eyes of a man who is accustomed to the prejudiced attitudes of the day, Sturm gives us not a rabble-rousing screed with the obvious moral that anti-Semitism is bad, but a highly evocative portrait of life as an ethnic outsider that gives us some feeling for what it's actually like.
Sturm's art is clean and says a lot with a little, as other reviewers have said. But Sturm's talent for saying a lot with a little is true of his prose as well. For a hundred-page comic, this book has a remarkable number of memorable and realistic characters. Also, the book design itself, from the color of the pages to the art inside the front covers, gives a retro feel that enhances the mood of the story.
Sturm obviously sweated the details to create something as simple in outline yet as emotionally and thematically complex as The Golem's Mighty Swing. His effort pays off. The Golem's Mighty Swing effortlessly sweeps the reader up in the story, the characters, and the setting, making for a quick read at first, and then a thoughtful mood after the reading is done.
Great Book.......2003-05-17
Even though I'm not a believer in the whole theory/vision of baseball as part of the American myth, Sturm does a pretty nice job with the metaphor in this understated but striking graphic novel. Set in the 1920s, the story concerns "The Stars of David", an ostensibly all-Jewish (one ex Negro League star qualifies as a "member of the lost tribe") barnstorming baseball team. With a decent amount of talent, they tour small towns as perpetual visitors, perpetual bad guys, and perpetual outsiders, earning just enough to scrape by. Until the team captain is approached by Victor Paige, of the Big Inning Promotional Agency. Paige convinces the team to create a Golem, "a creature that man creates to be a companion, a protector or a servant" as a gimmick to increase attendance. The gimmick works, but rather too well, as when they arrive in the next town, they are met with hostility and anti-Semitism beyond what they've ever faced before. The outcome is, well, predictable, and a metaphor for the times. The art is a lesson in the effectiveness of elegant simplicity, and captures the movement of baseball amazingly well. As per usual for Drawn & Quarterly, the book is very nicely printed and produced.
a graphic folktale of baseball.......2002-07-20
Sturm's spare and evocative artwork is the best I've seen in a graphic novel. Baseball is the most mythic of American sports and in this book its myths intersect with even deeper and more potent myths, myths of group identity and salvation. Sturm narrates a truly fabulous tale of social crisis and personal failure relativized and ennobled by "the big picture".
If "Maus" by Art Spiegelman is the only graphic novel you've read, this should be your next one.

Book Description
From Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Bambi, from The Little Mermaid to The Lion King, the animated films created by The Walt Disney Company are renowned for stories that amuse, astound, and inspire the viewer. Now, for the first time, the story artists and screenwriters behind these beloved movies offer aspiring and professional screenwriters a chance to learn how to incorporate the magic of Disney into their own celluloid dreams. Thanks to its three-act structure, Screenplay by Disney demonstrates the process of creating a great screenplay from start to finish. Additionally, a stellar cast of contributors will reveal not only how Disney does what it does so well but how you can adapt the company's strategies to your own creative endeavors.
Customer Reviews:
A fun read but not a "Manual for Writing".......2005-08-10
I enjoyed this book and found it's insites fun and entertaining. As for a "manual" for writing in the Disney style it is not. The author even admits that he set out to find the "magic formula" and found there was none. Animation by it's very nature is very fluid and the "script" is actually developed in storyboards not 3x5 cards. To truely appreciate the Disney method would require a book on storyboarding, acting, directing and story development with the script taking second fiddle.
Excellent New Disney Book.......2004-08-13
It's evident the book is written by a true Disney fan, plus there are some great little bits of humor that make it quite entertaining. There were a few instances where I was reading a section and thought "oh this quote from Walt would be so relevant, or this movie reference would work here nicely." More often than not, as I read a little further, or read the little notebook quotes, it was exactly what I was thinking of. Then there are the little teasers about future projects like Rapunzel Unbraided and especially the quote from Mary-Jane Ruggels about doing an animal-caper, a mystery and Latin American based movie. I've made a point of collecting Disney books (I probably have at least half of those mentioned in the endnotes), yet this book still offered new stories and insights.

Thirty-two strikingly illustrated cards, rich in beauty and symbolism, interweave images of flowers with corresponding universal archetypes. Isha Lerner takes the reader on a magical journey into the feminine soul of nature.
Customer Reviews:
Magnificent, just Magnificent.......2005-03-05
Not only are the illustrations of the flowers beautiful on their own, but the accompanying lessons to be learned are truly wonderful. A learning tool, a teaching tool, a flashcard to absorb all their is about each flower - this deck is simply profound!
The Power of Wisdom and Healing, 10 Stars!.......2003-05-20
This is one of the most beautifully written and illustrated book and card deck I have ever seen. Isha Lerner takes you on sacred and beautiful a journey into yourself. Her messages are easy to understand, and genuinely guide you to capture the "essence" of who you are, and what you need to embrace in order to come into wholeness. An excellent gift for anyone who loves art, beauty and wisdom. Highly recommended from my heart.
Flowers Combined with Goddesses and Gods: Beautiful Deck.......2002-10-30
This is an oracle deck of cards, not a Tarot deck. The paper guidebook that accompanies it is very thorough and suggests several ways to use the deck. It gives information on each plant or flowers' Signature (or appearance), its flower essence, its Archetype (Goddess or God), a Healing message and a Blessing. It is a very gentle, almost tender deck filled with beauty. Even if you care nothing at all about oracles, the artwork is so lovely that it is worth appreciating this deck as if it is a miniature art gallery. Stroll through the images in your mind and just relax and enjoy. The colors are very bright, the images are detailed and mystical. This deck has a New Age flavor to it and the following explanation for the use of flowers as an oracle clearly shows this style. "As keepers of the seeds of future manifestations, flowers represent a rainbow bridge to enlightenment, a mirror of tiny mandalas of the Great Womb we call our universe." The booklet is filled with lovely thoughts such as this but some may find it a bit over the top. This deck should not be overlooked by pagans because it provides access to a number of different examples of deity. It could be used as a teaching aid in that respect or as a meditation tool. Its 32 cards provide an effective oracle. It is well worth the price in my opinion. A lovely book by the artist and author, available separately, discusses the same ideas and images.

In TPM in Process Industries, top consultants from JIPM (Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance) document approaches to implementing TPM in process industries. They focus on the process environment and equipment issues such as process loss structure and calculation, autonomous maintenance, equipment and process improvement, and quality maintenance. Must reading for any manager in the process industry.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book on TPM.......2006-11-05
Although the book has been intended to focus on the TPM for the process industries, yet I found the book equally valuable for discrete manufacturing. The book explains in detail the TPM pillars and can be used as a guidebook for direct implementation.
Poorly Developed Characters, Thin Plot.......2002-09-04
If you buy this book expecting a corporate thriller, filled with larger-than-life characters and exciting tales of industrial espionage, you will be disappointed. TPM Manager is a tiresome main character---imagine a dumbed-down, cliche-filled John Galt from "Atlas Shrugged." Many times I shouted: Shut the F--- up! as I read TPM Manager spew drivel on the wonders of TPM. Initially, I wondered if Suzuki's book was purely ironic. Alas, the author really believes this nonsense. Here's some free advice: save the money, skip the reorg, don't hire the consultant, refrain from making people "take ownership" over a language that no one really takes seriously and instead show re-runs of the "Love Boat" once a week. It is guaranteed to make your employees run back to their cubicles and do some work.
Simply the BIBLE of TPM.......2001-08-28
Three years ago I used to work for a corporation that used absorbed the TPM (Total Prodictive Maintenance) methodology and made it its own with certain in-house touches.
When we were at the beginning stages of implementing TPM, the officer (that's the name of the role) in charge of the rollout made sure all of management had a good grasp on the ideas captured by this book, and a few even had a chance to meet Mr. Suzuki, to ask him questions about it, only to receive a very concise "Read the book!" as the answer.
The truth is that almost all you need to know to kick off TPM in your industry is hereby contained, however there's one BIG issue I should make you aware of: the book lays down the principles, all of which need to be internalized at all levels within your culture. If that is not achieved (the "zero-loss mentality", for example) you will feel frustrated, and might even be tempted to drop the program altogether. DON'T! If you need to, get consultants, try again, try harder: it's a proven model, and it works, you just have to be (you and your people) very disciplined about it.
TPM in Process Industries.......2000-06-30
I have worked widely using TPM as a practitioner and a consultant. For me this work represents the "bible" that I use to base my work from. The tools apply equally well to high speed lines as well as to process equipment.
TPM for all industries.......2000-04-02
This book is the best I have read on the subject of TPM. Although it is titled for process industries it is relevant for production industries also, showing the differences betwwen the two. It is packed with ideas and shows how to start and run TPM within your industry. I showed it around at work and three of my collegues went out and bought it.
