Book Description
How might it be that works of art and literature are not just made, but unmade, remade, and made over? Joseph Grigely argues that it is the very nature of art to incorporate change by editors and conservators, and as it is resituated in different publications and exhibition sites. Asserting that the common editorial practice of creating eclectic texts is essentially a eugenic practice based on Romanticism's desire for racial and textual purity, Grigely reconceives the notion of textual difference, or textualterity.
Grigely draws not only on a wide range of cultural transformations in nineteenth--and twentieth-century literature-- including Thomas Bowdler's 1818 edition of Shakespeare and the Reader's Digest condensed edition of Tom Sawyer--but on a detailed exploration of recent controversies in the arts to argue for the need to understand these textual transformations as fundamental cultural phenomena. In a concluding chapter devoted to Jackson Pollock's Number 1, 1950 (Lavender Mist), Grigely shows how the title and the media of Pollock's painting have been changed (by friends, curators, and an inch-long cicada) in ways that ultimately affect our conceptualization of the work of art as a timeless object.
By moving between the scholarly territory of textual research and the critical territory of contemporary conceptual art, Grigely creates a transdisciplinary discourse that engages current discussions on framing, authorial intentions, collaborative authorship, and moral rights. Textualterity will be essential reading for textual critics, art historians and theorists, and students of cultural theory and history.
Joseph Grigely is Associate Professor of Art, University of Michigan.

Another Outstanding Contribution from Joseph Grigely.......2001-02-18
Like his art work and critiques, Joseph Grigely's selection of essays are insightful, humorous and often brilliant. Grigely is one of those rare artists who can challenge his audience on many levels with unusual clarity. Highly recommended for anyone who has appreciated the work of Avital Ronell or Jacques Derrida.
Book Description
Layer blending modes have been part of Photoshop for years, but because they're not easy to understand at first glance, this immensely useful feature tends to get overlooked. Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers is the only recipe-format book that covers blending modes specifically for digital photographers.
The book covers:
- Changing hue, saturation, luminosity, and color
- Correcting basic color shifts
- Repairing highlights
- Sharpening or softening focus
- Adjusting lighting for subtle or dramatic effects
- Controlling contrast
- Creating surface effects and textures
- Adding interest to landscapes and urban scenes
- Enhancing portraits of children and adults
- Simulating graphics arts techiques
and much more.
Unlike Photoshop's built-in filters, blending modes don't change the actual pixels that make up an image, so their effects are completely reversible. There are over 20 blending modes in Photoshop CS2, which range from those which darken and lighten images (such as Darken, Multiply, Lighten, and Screen) to modes that increase contrast (such as Overlay and Hard Light) and adjust color (such as Hue, Color. Luminosity, and Saturation).
In addition to covering each blending mode in detail, John Beardsworth, a London-based photographer and author, takes the reader through a whole collection of recipes that demonstrate how to use blending modes alone or in combination to fix problem photos, add subtle effects, and create dramatic images that are truly unique.
With clear, step-by-step instructions, real-world projects, an easy-to-follow format, and hundreds of full-color examples, Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers is shows you how to use blending modes to achieve a wide range of image adjustments and special effects-without having to first learn everything there is to know about Photoshop.
Customer Reviews:
Fair for the price.......2007-09-12
This is not a book for beginners. Shows blending techniques and effects in a very focused way. Should only be considered by those who are indeed interested in these fields.
Great Book.......2007-08-14
I guess it depends on how you learn. This book has recipes for various looks using Photoshop's Blending Modes. The examples generally include several different kinds of photos. The result is that you get to see what happens to photos of things, people, landscapes, etc. using the same or similar recipes. The author also tells you when he did things a little differently for one or two kinds of photos, and why.
I've seen a lot of this stuff before, but found that I learned a lot from how this book is laid out. It should also make it a lot easier to find, and use, a specific technique for a specific problem.
Because I am a digital scrapbooker, I might find all of this a lot more useful than some other people who use Photoshop. I'm not only manipulating photos when I scrapbook, I am also making and manipulating digital papers and elements. These techniques would be extremely useful for scrapbooking.
Cream of the Crop.......2007-06-12
Of all the wonderful Photoshop books by the O'Reilly Studio, this one rocks solid and gave me things about Blending Modes I never knew were possible. I am still playing around with all the possibilities. They have great internet access to images that go with the 'recipes', and a terrific index with examples of all the different combinations they offer so if you need a type of effect, all you have to do is go to the visual index and pick what you are looking for and there it will be. All have the same single image, so it is easy to find the effect you want. I highly reccommend this book to any level Photoshop lover who likes to get artistic with their photos.
Photoshop, CS2, blending.......2007-05-12
This text is very well done and introduces the average reader to numerous blending modes that he/she might not have known eisted. The cookbook design makes following the procedures to gain specific effects easier to understand. While most people will never use all of the methods described, he/she is exposed to the techniques to employ. And that makes for better understanding of the blending process within Photoshop. My nly real complaint is that the typeface used makes it difficult to read. It should be darker and more prominent. The publisher needs to be aware that books are not always used in perfect light.
Useful and interesting.......2007-02-06
This book put several previously unused tools into regular use for me.

In this episode in the popular series, a team of five Gundam are pitted against each other at a deserted space station. When assassination, mind control, and a loaded gun enter the picture, it's obvious they're not alone.
Customer Reviews:
Spiffy Book!.......2002-06-24
This book was really amusing. For fans of the series (and especially of fanfiction) this is a great manga. The characters are all seen as we fanfic writers and/or readers see them as (although there isn't much of any yaoi implications). Unlike the other books, this one takes full advantage of super deformed drawings of the characters (especially Duo) which brings out more emotion. Overall, I absolutely loved this book!
Okay, but some of the other graphic novels are better........2002-05-13
I love Gundam Wing, but this wasn't really GW. Take the fact most of the characters were Out Of Character - Trowa laughs several times (loudly, I might add); Heero had made a hand-stiched teddy-bear; the 1xR scene; WuFei was more egotistical than ever - add to that the fact I didn't like the drawing much - I don't mind some super-deformity, but this went overboard - and I have to say I didn't like this much.
Though it did have it's good points - there's a little 1x2 in here. Heero holds Duo when Duo's fainted, and doesn't bother to put him down. *grin*
In total, Episode Zero's better. And not just because of WuFei.
1x2 forever!
Gundam Forever.......2002-01-22
This book is great! Besides the great artowork, the author did very well on keeping you on the edge till the end.
It explains a lot of what happens in EW. Like why they sent the gundams, and why Wing Zero suddenly was upgraded. It also explains why Wufie didnt send his gundam. It's a must read, real good!
Very cool ;).......2001-12-23
The art in this is just amazing. It really is. Beautiful, beautiful art!
Okay...well, I'm not a big fan of Relena (I actually think she's mentally disabled, but okay...), and I do resent that Heero/Relena interaction towards the end, but the rest of it was a masterpiece. Reku Fuyunagi really brought out the complexity of the characters (fanfiction isn't a great way to get an accurate Quatre) in a humorous, fast paced, adorable, breathtaking way. Everyone must have this manga.
A very cool follow up!.......2001-12-12
I liked this book very much, I actually bought it in September (...). The book is basically about what what happens after the last episode of the series, to endless waltz. Herro plays basketball! and there's a bonus comic at the end, very Heero and Relena-ish. I love the pictures in it! I actually have a fave one, but hey! Buy the book, you'll enjoy it too!

Subtitled "Gilda Radner: A Sort of Love Story," this autobiographical play tries to recapture the non-sexual, but deeply felt relationship between Radner, one of Saturday Night Live's original Not Ready-for-Prime-Time players, and Alan Zweibel, who was a writer for the show. Alternately comic and heartbreaking, the play follows these two overgrown kids as they ride their bumper-car lives right up to Radner's death from ovarian cancer. Their loyalty and love glows through every scene. The book is illustrated with photos of Radner from Zweibel's personal albums.
Book Description
In a series of funny, tender, and touching dialogues, former Saturday Night Live writer Zweibel recalls his buddy-and-almost-lover friendship with SNL actress Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer. Zweibel claims he "merely scribbled the dialogues playing in my head," and, indeed, these recreated conversations have a neurotic, sarcastic, and vulnerable air of aunthenticity. The actress and writer become fast friends on the SNL set and segue into personal revelation.

Genius!.......2007-03-09
Although, I felt as though I was reading a monologue rather than a story, I was able to finish the whole book in a little less than an hour (because it was THAT good).
I just wish they would've ended up together (like together together, not just "together")..
but friendship is always stronger..
Very thin, more like a skit script.......2006-08-19
Maybe as a homage to the fact Zweibel wrote skits for Gilda Radner when they both worked on "Saturday Night Live," this whole book is written like a series of skits, some funny, some poignant, just the dialogue without stage direction, details, exposition or anything. So you have to fill in all the rest yourself and imagine you're watching two people on a stage. You learn a little about their relationship, but not much. You have many blanks to fill in.
I wouldn't mind seeing this as a play, but as a book, it was kind of hollow.
Heart Warming.......2006-03-28
I found this book to be very touching and sentimental. I only hope when I am gone my friends will remember me in a way like this.
Bunny Bunny-Funny Funny.......2006-03-09
For the true Gilda fan, Or someone who enjoys the comedy of Alan Zweibel. I thought it was a sweet book. I laughed, I cried, I read it quick!
I Laughed, I Cried!.......2005-01-09
In 1975 a writer Alan Zweibel and a comedienne named Gilda Radner meet while working at Saturday Night Live. In this poignant yet very funny book, the author pays homage to a woman he worked with for over 14 years and with whom he had sort of a love story.
Using recreated dialogues between Gilda and himself, Mr. Zweibel recounts their first meeting on the set of Saturday Night Live when Gilda asks him if he will write a scene for her where she is a parakeet. From this opening story we then see their friendship forged as they work together, vacation together, get mad at one another and finally comfort one another over various events in their lives. Mr. Zweibel captures the essence of two young people in crazy business on the brink of great success beautifully and we revel in their friendship. There are so many wonderful moments I will remember like when Gilda talks about her fame and Alan is overjoyed when he gets a credit card and gets another one to pay off the first one. The when we read from the night when John Lennon dies outside of Gilda's apartment house to asking Alan to meet her new love, Gene Wilder. And as we are laughing all too soon our joy turns to sorrow as Gilda is diagnosed with ovarian cancer ending her life too shortly at 39.
This is a wonderful love story about two people who meet and fall in love even if isn't the same kind of conventional love story you might have expected.
Read this book - you'll laugh, you'll cry and end the book
Wishing we still had this talented woman still among us and especially that our sort of love story with Gilda went on forever.
Customer Reviews:
Yee-aah!.......2006-03-02
Excellent book for the western enthusiast. was a little disappointed that posters were not full page but guess I'm being a bit picky. No text apart from the introduction, many memories came flooding back of favourites such as Charles Starrett, Allan Lane, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry etc.
These books will end up collectors items so strike while the iron is hot.
The Colorful West.......2000-12-13
More Cowboy Movie Posters is a fabulous art book and truly invaluable, offering the highest quality images from good and bad westerns. As someone who collects western posters, I have used this book as an important aid to purchasing posters illustrated within. Without such a quality reference I would have needed to peruse a stack of catalogs to find the same amount of images. For the non collector movie buff, the book is equally a delight and tremendous value at the low price.
Superb, Extraordinary Detail On Every Level!.......1999-11-15
This review can easily apply to any of the books in the Bruce Hershenson edited series of film poster history. Hershenson rightly treats film graphics not just as pop culture artifacts but true works of art. His books are filled with a curator's eye for superior choice and reproduction, each poster in striking color and with a clarity of printing that rivals most any coffee table art book. Somewhere between advertising and illustration, film posters, like book jackets and record covers, inhabit that imaginative and atmospheric zone where one art reflects another. It's not just the history of film or the history of film design, it's a history of twentieth century Saturday afternoons and Saturday nights. How often we would go into the dark theatre armed only with the ideas and ideals of the posters outside, and then return to them afterward, perhaps with nodding affirmation or smirking disillusionment, but still a vision of what could be. This series of books should be subtitiled: THE FINE ART OF ANTICIPATION,for no matter if expectation was filled or emptied by the films behind them, their posters kept on shining.
A beautiful treasure-trove of movie memories........1999-11-08
All the great heroes of Hollywood westerns are represented in a book that's a delight to flip through. It's packed with the colorful, dramatic, enticing art that made movie posters even more appealing than the movies, themselves.

Can't go wrong with this book!.......2007-05-17
Don't let that 'Young' Beginners' fool you. This book is for anyone wanting to get into rock or r&b sax, even a grey-beard like me! Progression is good with both melody, rhythm, and starting improv covered. The cd has both alto and tenor tracks. Geller makes it reasonably easy to sound good, but it will take some effort. Price and Laughter each have a great rock sax book, but this is the place to start!
