Book Description
A collection of both Humor and Hubris relating to the biggest, dumbest, most idiotic blunder in the history of technology...Known to one and all as the Y2K Millennium Bug
Customer Reviews:
Wicked Tongue-in-cheek Humor on the Y2K Bungle.......1999-07-26
This text is described as a parody about the biggest technology blunder in history and it successfully achieves that title. Written to be understandable and funny to readers ages 15 to 95, it provides a wickedly revealing look at the Year 2000 Crisis from new and traditional perspectives. Those who are technology savants will savor every single page. For persons who heretofore have remained blissfully ignorant of the impact (both real and imagined) of the Millenium Bug, this book helps explain what the fuss is all about. Full of relevant (and irreverent) quotes and clever cartoons, Mr. de Jager's insights make for a delightful read. Expect to find yourself laughing out loud...in your workplace...saying, "I've heard that! As a matter of fact, our IT people have said that!" Having read and reread the book, I now am equipped to intelligently laugh or cry about Y2K, depending on my audience of the moment.
Even the Marginally-Funny Ones Strike Home.......1999-07-04
As with Gary Larson (The Far Side) or Dan Piraro (Bizarro), Peter's sense of humour owes a lot to the pun ... and a good pun is its own reword. Some of the pictures aren't as funny as others, but every one strikes home. Overall, a collection that subversively deals with the ethics of what we do; "yes, it is our own fault", and "yes, we must own up and do something about it". Probably one of the few works published this year that makes you feel good about abandoning the "victim mentality". Recommended as suitable to anyone who finds the system "grating" on them, for the hope it brings.
What's so funny about the end of the world as we know it?.......1999-06-18
Well, for one thing, it happens everyday. Repeatedly. Only in really small increments. That's life! But if you have been mired in this little man-made problem (yes, all programmers used to be males, so the women are innocent on this one) (yes, I know that is not true, e.g. Grace Murray Hopper # 3 programmer on the Mark 1, circa. 1944, but this politically correct thing is going to turn out to be a bigger blunder than 6-digit dates) ... where was I? ... If you have been mired in the millennium-made project for what seems like an eternity, it's time to come up for air, like in HA HA! Ever wondered what Shakespear, Marty Allen, Ogden Nash, Oscar Wilde, George Burns, Richard Nixon, Winston Churchill, and Will Rogers had in common? Ya, I'm sure you have. Well, along with several others, they all made comments about the year 2000 frenzy "before its time."
Along with a collection of 'Larson-ish' cartoons Peter's book provides a moment of chuckle in an otherwise chuckleless environ. Give a copy to a friend. Better yet, give it to an enemy. Give it to all your enemies and both your friends. Spread the humor. It's the best remediation for what ails you.
After all, "When we remember that we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained." -- Mark Twain (from Peter's book)

Book Description
Learn the Nikon D70 for 5 Bucks is a concise, bright, four-color, quick-reference manual for one of the most popular digital SLR cameras in the market. The text is integrated with large photographs and the Nikon's menu photographs or software interface shot interface screen captures, (either s). Brief tips or warnings at page bottom address any ancillary points not covered in the basic how-to text. Readers will quickly learn how to master the key skills they need to take great photos with their Nikon-- basic shooting tips, adjusting the LCD monitor, managing white balance, creating panoramic shots, using the zoom feature, downloading images with a card reader or USB cable, printing photos, and so on. With a 6x7 trim size and an extremely affordable price, this book isn't designed to be a complete reference, but is a useful guide for people users who just want to learn the basics of their Nikon D70 camera.
Customer Reviews:
Covers the basics very well........2007-05-03
Easiest manual I've ever read. Speaks in plain language - wish he would write a "middle" level manual.
35mm to Digital in a FLASH for 50+ year olds.......2006-11-12
Nikon should have included this book with the camera. I still use it from time to time for quick reference.
Less is more.......2006-11-05
This is the best quick start guide for the D70 that I've seen, especially if you are visually oriented. The succinct, step-by-step instructions are supported by color photographs and diagrams. It's an accessible introduction for technophobics and technophiles alike...especially if you hate sifting through the fine print in the manual. An excellent value.
So I figured, what do have to lose?.......2006-08-15
It's only five bucks. Well, I lost five bucks. Don't bother buying this book. If you bought a D70 and you need this book to figure out how to work it, you should have bought a disposable camera. Do you really need this book to tell you to turn the ring on the lens to zoom? If you're sitting at home with your $1000 camera in your lap waiting for this book to arrive so you can learn how to zoom your camera, then this book is for you. Overnight it if you have to. Otherwise, don't buy the book, send me four dollars so I can enjoy a cup of coffee at Fourbucks. At least one of us will get something for your money and you would have saved a dollar. It's a win-win.
A good book for D70 owners........2006-08-08
Good overall could have gotten a little more detailed about some settings. I would recommend it.
Book Description
The sorcerer is a new core class introduced in Dungeons & Dragons Third Edition, and has proven popular with both players and game masters. Continuing the highly successful Collector's Series of books, The Quintessential Sorcerer expands on the powers and spells available to those of draconian lineage who channel their magic from within.
Customer Reviews:
Helping to Add Spice and Variety to your Sorcerer.......2003-08-05
This book truly helps to add spice and variety to your sorcerer character or your players' sorcerer characters. Character concepts with balanced variant rules allow you to fine tune the sorcerer with some stylistic playing flavor. The prestige classes help make classic sorcerer idea into specific roleplaying machines with the added benefit of new and different powers. What struck my fancy the most were the fey-based ideas, Prestige Class, and the like. Spells, ley line rules, heritage templates, and ritual powers you can awaken instead of learning a new spell will truly set your Suave Sorcerer apart from the near-sighted wizard. It may not be 3.5 rules, but there will be an update soon if you are hoping for one. Still, I'd recommend this book for sheer amount of valuable content.

Customer Reviews:
Great STUFF!!.......2007-05-23
Granted, not every cd is hilarious, but just the Richard Jeni cd alone is hilarious and wellworth the price. Jeff Wayne cd, also hilarious! For $8.90. you will not go wrong. The Richard Jeni cd alone sells for higher elsewhere. Seller is prompt and items shipped with care. I just ordered a second set for a gift. Enjoy!
1 star because the drop down will not go negative .......2006-08-16
I got this collection for $5 and I feel ripped off. You would think that for $5 for 6 CDs would be a great deal but no. This set is so bad that it is tempting to put any of the CDs in on a long drive just for the anticipation that someone in the car will reach over and jerk the wheel into on coming traffic for the sweet relief of death. Even for free you are getting cheated.
Book Description
Off-White Hollywood investigates how the "ethnicity" of white European-American actresses has played a key role in the mythology of American identity and nation building. Embodying national fantasies and "assimilation myths," ethnic female film stars symbolized the promise of American multiculturalism and proved the desirability and reliability of the American Dream. Through case studies of stars spanning cinema's history, Diane Negra examines Hollywood films and promotional material as a vehicle through which American culture expresses and negotiates gender and ethnic identities. Tracing processes of transformation, containment and resistance, from the assimilation imperatives of the early twentieth century to the current ethnic revival, Off-White Hollywood shows how star personae have reflected the changing meanings of whiteness in US culture.

Book Description
From Bach's choral works composed for performance in the Thomas-Kirche Leipzig to Stockhausen's electronic music designed specifically for caves, the course of Western music has been closely connected to the spaces in which it has been performed. In this remarkable study, Michael Forsyth - designer of concert halls, architect, and violinist - examines the effect of musical taste and style on architecture and the reciprocal influence that buildings and their acoustics have had on musical performance and composition.
Buildings for Music opens with a description of the purpose - built music rooms in Britain and Germany from the 17th century. From there it moves to the evolution of the opera house in Italy and France, analyzing these buildings in terms of the acoustic requirements of 18th-century music in the classical style. The great 19th-century concert halls and opera houses are then described in relation to the development of Romantic music. In seeking the reasons for their excellence and flaws, the book dispels a number of acoustic myths.
The final part of the book outlines the growth of acoustic science and the parallel emergence of the 20th-century concert hall and of modern music. The influence of recording techniques and cinema design are also discussed. In closing, Forsyth looks to a future that may find its inspiration in electronics and the adjustable auditorium.
Michael Forsyth teaches and researches architecture at the University of Bristol. He has broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on concert hall acoustics, and is a frequent contributor to the Architects' Journal.
Customer Reviews:
Useful and beautiful.......2000-06-18
Through an historical panorama of concert halls, "salons de musique" and other acoustic-minded pieces of architecture you will discover how to benefit most from music from a "sound" architecture design...

Finally, a real guide to the Lords of the Night........1997-07-11
Every AD&D DM has read that one page in the Monstrous Manual, front and back, on vampires.
Many say, "What can this book have to say that the justly revered Monstrous Manual didn't?" More than you can imagine!
Have you ever wondered about the stats for a vampire in wolf form? What about RESISTANCE TO SUNLIGHT?! What powers does one vampire have that another doesn't? What breaks the mold and makes a bloodthirsty beast into a powerful foe (or ally!)?
These and a hundred other questions have been answered here and ONLY here. There is not only great detail on abilities but also a great potential for variety. Van Richten's Guide to Vampires makes vampires powerful characters under a DM's control while giving PC's a chance with detailed information on the combat, protection from, traits, and very minds of vampires. As if these reasons weren't enough ANYONE in a campaign can read this book. (Several PC's are laughing and thinking of their own copy of Monstrous Manual.) No, I don't mean that onl

Harvard CSR .......2007-05-14
As an educational leadership professor, I am interested in learning about corporations and how they impact educational settings. This text was one of the most comprehensive collections of essays to offer a wide range of perspectives on the issues of corporate social responsibility. With its researchers and the commentary, this text provides a novice, like myself, with the background, application and insight as to how the business world perceives CSR within its own environment. For those of you who are new to this field, this is a must read.

8 articles on Corporate Social Responsibility.......2006-11-07
This collection of article opens interesting lines of reasoning and might just get fresh ideas in front of decision makers who can use business as a tool for good on the global scale. The eight articles cover a broad range of topics and vary in tone from sweeping philosophical musings to rigorous academic pieces. The first article is a very strong lead-off, I will try to summarize this piece in hopes of giving you a flavor for the whole collection:
* Serving the world's poor, profitably - C.K. Prahalad & Allen Hammond
How can companies profitably serve a market where consumers live on $2000 or less per year? On the other hand, how can companies afford to ignore a market of 4 billion potential customers? This article explores reasons why companies have in the past shied away from trying to serve the "bottom of the pyramid" (BOP) markets, why major growth opportunities exist in this niche, and how typical strategies need to be adapted into new thinking that will benefit the world's poorest communities and those who compete for their business. There is a distasteful element to imagining multinational corporations, the most powerful institutions of our time, engaging and profiting from the most economically powerless. The authors make the case that the poor suffer more from being ignored by the global marketplace of the multinationals than by engagement with it. They illustrate how prices charged by the informal economy that serves poor communities are typically much higher for the same goods than prices in more affluent communities served by efficient distribution. When BOP strategies are done correctly, corporations also benefit in more ways than simply generating additional sales: BOP markets can serve as incubators for new products, ideas and approaches that can revitalize productivity and leadership in the developed (and saturated) markets as well. An innovative approach for reaching poorer customers is to de-aggregate ownership from use by exploring "pay per use" models. Another strategy, that runs counter to mainstream thinking, is to deploy some of the most cutting edge wireless technologies in the least developed markets to overcome the isolation of poor rural areas.
8essays that see corporate responsibility as an opportunity.......2003-10-22
Traditional corporate executives may shudder when they hear the term "corporate responsibility". In their view, the corporation's responsibility is to maximize shareholder value within the bounds of the law. That's a tall order as it is, so resistance to the thought of additional sources of responsibility and additional relevant "stakeholders" isn't surprising. The writers gathered in this collection of papers from HBR see corporate responsibility less as a burden and more as an opportunity. The opportunity lies in creating new markets, resolving age-old business problems, improving public perception, strengthening brands, and melding the best ideas for governments and nonprofit institutions for doing well while doing good.
This collection of eight essays provides a firm foundation in both critical and creative thinking on issues of corporate responsibility and active philanthropy. If the terrain is unfamiliar, the collection's fifth essay - "The Path of Kyosei should be a comfortable entry point. Canon's honorary chairman, Ryuzaburo Kaku, sets out five steps along a path toward a "spirit of cooperation". Practical but still intellectually not so challenging is Rosabeth Moss Kanter's "From Spare Change to Real Change: The Social Sector as Beta Site for Business Innovation". Craig Smith in "The New Corporate Philanthropy" sees philanthropic strategies as giving a competitive edge. A similar perspective, worked out in some detail, comes from Michael Porter and Mark Kramer in their contribution, "The Competitive Advantage of Corporate Philanthropy".
Charles Handy takes his turn at defining the extent of corporate responsibility in "What's A Business For?". A more impressive piece with far more potential payback for the executive reader comes from C.K. Prahalad and Allen Hammond in their recent essay, "Serving the World's Poor, Profitably". Also of high quality is Roger Martin's "The Virtue Matrix: Calculating the Return on Corporate Responsibility". For the more philosophical, a challenging and well-presented argument for strong corporate responsibility appears in "Can a Corporation Have a Conscience?" by the fittingly-named Kenneth Goodpaster and John Matthews. With a couple of weaker spots, this collection succeeds in bringing together some of the best recent thinking on the issue in recent years. To fill in the gaps, be sure to look at the best pieces from other publications.
