Book Description

The materials, tools, and techniques used by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Picasso, Michelangelo, Holbein, Delacroix

Back in print by popular demand, The Craft of Old-Master Drawings is both a useful manual for contemporary artists and a historical work covering the period from the late Middle Ages to the mid-twentieth century. It presents the old masters' techniques and provides specific directions for making inks, styluses, reed and quill pens, and fabricated chalks, as well as instructions for preparing grounds for metalpoint drawings. It comprises a body of knowledge that is essential to artists, students of art history, curators, and collectors.

James Watrous (1908-1999) was the Oskar Hagen Professor of Art History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As an artist he was known especially for his murals and mosaics, and he was the driving force in founding the Elvehjem Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of A Century of American Printmaking, 1880-1980, also published by the University of Wisconsin Press.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2002-07-06

This book was a very useful and resourceful book for me. Any body interested in the historical perspective of materials will want this book in there library. The Author provides valuable information about caulks, pastels, crayons, inks, pens, quills, metal points, and intaglio. The most interesting information the book provided me was recipes for each tool and medium. The author quoted many recipes from old text and sources and then presented more general recipes. One can expect to find the time and region in which these materials and recipes would have been most frequently used.

The information is of great value for a historic perspective on materials and reproducing them. The book is well worth its price. My only complaint is that the book "The craft of old master drawings" doesn't detail information about supports and papers. Despite finding this an intriguing yet disappointing exclusion in a discussion about traditional drawing materials I still give the book five stars for every thing else.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Important "Coffee Table" Book You'll Ever Own.......2007-09-30

This book is more than just a collection of breathtaking aerial shots of the global community in which we live -- it's an informative and often damning look at the world that we have created, and how our lives make it what it is. The book does not pull any punches, and often as we gaze at the sheer beauty (both man-made and natural) of this planet, we are slapped in the face with the facts of life. It's a picture book that seems to be telling us, "Yes, a picture is worth a thousand words, but here are a few that you may not have noticed."

Don't just buy this book for yourself, buy it for every person that may come into your home, pick it up, and look at just a few pages. You will help each of them understand the complexities and dilemmas of our modern lives.

I still haven't read it all, as there's 365 days, but what I have seen I am impressed with. It's not just the pictures but the background information that accompanies it It's like a mini history/geography lesson, but fun!

                  3 out of 5 stars Political overtones.......2007-05-12

Many of the pictures were nice. A little disappointed in the choice of some of the pictures that were used. The written narration is very environment, global warming, & politically biased. I purchased several as a coffee table gift idea. I won't buy any more of this particular book unless I am certain the person I'm giving it to has liberal values.

In a literal overview of the world, Earth from Above: 365 Days presents a resplendent view of our complex home. Each new day reveals another breathtaking, and sometimes heartbreaking, image from the sky: an endless field of Kenyan flamingos, the crowded streets of Tokyo, the crisscrossing highways of Los Angeles, or a misty blue lagoon in Iceland. Turn the page and find yet another absorbing view. Each of the 365 pictures is monumental and imparts one more mind-blowing facet to our elaborate planet. Every image is accompanied by a brief socially conscious text. Descriptions of nature's bounty and wrath, along with human impact both good and bad, run throughout. From the beauty of the world's largest maze to the destruction of major earthquakes, life seems unpredictable. Whether it's one lone outfielder in Yankee Stadium or the lone penguin on a glacier in Antarctica, the sentiment is very much the same. Against the immensity of life on earth, each of us can sometimes feel so very small. --J.P. Cohen

They are great coffee table books as well as great resources to show your children amazing natural and man made sites from all over the globe. Highly recommended.

An amazing book of beautiful, thought provoking pictures that swirl the mind. No negative critiques other than the fact that the book should have been published in a large "coffee table book" size. I think a huge disservice was done to both the quality and content of these photos to have them published in a 6.5" x 7" format.

                  5 out of 5 stars Erie coincidence.......2004-10-11

When I turned the page to September 11th just recently, I saw an erie photograph of the destruction of 2 side by side square structures in Florida reminding me of the World Trade Center on that very date. When I checked the copyright and saw that the book was publisher in 2001, I thought it would have to be after September 11th and the author used this photograph intentionally on this date. But by checking the Amazon site I learned the published date was September 1, 2001. Though I know September is hurricane season in Florida, I couldn't help but think this was an erie coincidence.

In the second graphic novel of this increibly kawaii (that means cute in Japanese) manga series, Hazel meets a rival for Almond's love: Coconut! Who will end up with Almond?

One of my favorite stories in this graphic novel is "Panic at the Cherry Blossom Festival." In it, a drunk Dodrio messes up a cherry blossom festival. But Eevee (Coconut's Pokemon) and Hazel's Pokemon can't stop it - because they're also drunk! How will the story end? (Parents, don't worry for a second about the drinking, because it's not nasty or anything.)

Another cute story is the second part of the story where Ash, Misty, and Brock are trapped in Hazel's world. Misty is drawn so cutely! And the story is funny.

So, overall, don't miss this graphic novel. It's smart, it's funny, it's cute, and it's MUCH better than Toshihiro Ono's Pokemon manga (at least in my opinion).

                  Book Description

The naughty Colin McNaughton takes on the trials of potty training in this funny, familiar tale to which toddlers—and their parents—will easily relate.

Littlesaurus laughed and laughed and sang very loudly,
                  "Potty poo-poo wee-wee!"
                  And the Daddysaurus said,
"Shush. It's rude to say it so loud."

Not only does Littlesaurus refuse to use the potty — well, for purposes other than building sandcastles or wearing as a hat — but he thinks it's hilarious to shout out "Potty poo-poo wee-wee!" and embarrass everyone within earshot, from Mommysaurus to Auntiesaurus to Teachersaurus to even his friend Whippersnappersaurus. What will help Littlesaurus change his rude ways? Could it be that a bit of reverse psychology is in order?

We are in the midst of potty training and found this book at our local library. What seemed cute at initial glance turned to horror on the playground as I found my daughter telling other children "Potty Poo Poo Wee Wee" and other parents saying "WHAT DID SHE JUST SAY?" I should never have brought this book home. Apparently a dinosaur (Littlesauraus)refuses to potty train and just likes to call out this phrase at inappropriate times. He's disrespectful to relatives and neighbors and all he is told is "Shhhhh, that's rude". He only decides to use the potty after his father loses his temper (always a great idea in potty training) and yelling at his child "I don't care if you never use the potty." Of course, he does at the end, but then all the adults yell the catch phrase at him - where's the logic in that? Smooth idea, repeatedly tell your child NOT to say something because it's rude and then say it yourself. Next thing you know we'll have books where adults tell kids not to swear then turn around it do it to them. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR POTTY TRAINING OR READING AT ALL!

Potty-training a toddler is challeging enough without insipid material such as this book out on the market. This book encourages your 'littlesaurus' to have a bowel movement on the floor, scream out "potty poo-poo wee-wee", and wear his potty on his head. While the adults in his world refer to him as "rude". At the end of the book, the adults then yell "potty poo-poo wee-wee", a phrase they have been trying to discourage. The pinnacle of bad taste is when his grandmother steps on a BM pile. Mixed messages run amok in this book. I believe it will actually set toddlers and thier parents back in potty-training goals.

                  5 out of 5 stars Potty Poo-Poo Wee-Wee.......2006-03-22

Excellent book during potty training. The kids will giggle through the whole book and by the end, might be asking you to go potty. Dinosaurs and potty training, what better combination!

"Journalism In The Movies" by Matthew C. Ehrlich (Associate Professor of Journalism, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is a history of how Hollywood movies have depicted American journalism and newspaper reporters, editors and publishers from the beginning of the sound era in motion pictures down to the present day. Professor Ehrlich documents how film makers from script writers to directors have consistently presented journalists as men and women who see through lies and hypocrisy, defend the ordinary people from corruption, conspiracy, and criminality, and serve in the defense of democracy. From 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington', to 'All the President's Men', to 'The Insider', and more, the reader is provided with illustrative examples of films that reflect and shape public opinion with respect to the role of journalist in American society and American life. "Journalism In The Movies" is an important and scholarly addition to academic library Cinema History reference collections, and supplemental reading lists for students and non-academic general readers with an interest in journalism and the movies.

                    Book Description

This landmark work explores the vibrant world of football from the 1920s through the 1950s, a period in which the game became deeply embedded in American life. Though millions experienced the thrills of college and professional football firsthand during these years, many more encountered the game through their daily newspapers or the weekly Saturday Evening Post, on radio broadcasts, and in the newsreels and feature films shown at their local movie theaters. Asking what football meant to these millions who followed it either casually or passionately, Michael Oriard reconstructs a media-created world of football and explores its deep entanglements with a modernizing American society.

Football, claims Oriard, served as an agent of "Americanization" for immigrant groups but resisted attempts at true integration and racial equality, while anxieties over the domestication and affluence of middle-class American life helped pave the way for the sport's rise in popularity during the Cold War. Underlying these threads is the story of how the print and broadcast media, in ways specific to each medium, were powerful forces in constructing the football culture we know today.

5 out of 5 stars Reflections on the rise of America's Game.......2006-11-17

This is really a fascinating and well written book. Oriard looks at every angle in deconstructing how and why football became America's Game by 1960. Great illustrations accompany very readable text. It's a social history as much as a football history, but it speaks volumes about the sporting heritage of America and how race, class, and ethnicity are reflected in the game - and indeed how the game has forced us to confront some of the less savory facets of American society, particularly race. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of football and American popular culture.

                        Book Description

Certain films seem to encapsulate perfectly the often abstract ethical situations that confront the media, from truth-telling and sensationalism to corporate control and social responsibility. Using these movies--including Ace in the Hole, All the President's Men, Network, and Twelve Angry Men--as texts, authors Howard Good and Michael Dillon demonstrate that, when properly framed and contextualized, movies can be a powerful lens through which to examine media practices. Moreover, cinema can present human moral conduct for evaluation and analysis more effectively than a traditional case study can. By presenting ethical dilemmas and theories within a dramatic framework, Media Ethics Goes to the Movies offers a unique perspective on what it means for media professionals to be both technically competent and morally informed.

From the supplier: ABC News Inc. has begun to incorporate movie themes from parent firm Walt Disney Co. in its feature spots. Using loose tie-ins to real life or actual events, the spots provide Disney with an opportunity to showcase new or upcoming releases complete with clips. This development may threaten the balance between news reporting and thinly disguised commercials for company products.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Living The 80/20 Way.......2007-07-04

I think every over worked, under satisfied, perfectionist whether in business for themselves or not should read this book. I work for someone who is very, very successful and he lives his life this way and I wanted to see what his secret is and now I know. I look forward to answering the questions in the book and allowing my life to change for the better! I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Pragmatic .......2007-05-12

I previously applied '80/20 principle' at work while formulating some product marketing strategy, but never thought of applying it to my personal life; Koch's 'Living the 80/20 Way' offered me a surprisingly pragmatic guide to do so. The book is a quick read, & packed with insights, exercises & examples. It's mind provoking & made me think about how I should re-configure my life. I look forward to continuously applying the principle to my life & achieve 'more with less'.

5 out of 5 stars This is about application.......2006-10-22

If you picked up and found the value in the original '80/20 Principle' then this will increase your understanding and insight into one of businesses most profound priciples.

If you couldn't apply the lessons from the first book then this book will surely help you really achieve more with less. This book takes the theory from the first book and makes it applicable and easily implementable to every aspect for work/life.

This book is about applying Paretto's 80/20 in our life (love, work, etc..)

I would separate the book into two parts:
the first part is quite boring and too philosophically written (though, the whole book is very easy to read). The author is repetitive, sometimes too abstract. Some statements are really fun and ironically saying mind-blowing, like: "if you are poor, money can make you happy". The whole book is full of such an unnecessary, useless statements.

The second part is, where the things are happening. The author forces the reader to think, how could she apply the 80/20 in life. There are lot of quizes, summaries, tables to fill and questions to answer. For example the author forces you to rethink, who are you, what do you want from life, and how to achieve it. IN A FUN WAY!. This type of self-discovery has tredemous value for the reader.

the funny thing is, that the 80/20 is explained in an undirect way (by showing examples of applicability). There are no hard to understand theories, statistics, etc...

Having read the 80/20 Principle by the same author, I found it extremely useful for putting into words what I have been doing for years with my actions and time management. His original book is great but several of those to whom I recommended it got bored, and didn't finish it, or they couldn't see how the business principles had any practical application to their own personal lives. The author acknowledges that this is why he wrote this current book which contains much of the same information as the original but repackaged to be easier to appreciate and apply. If you haven't read either book, I'd recommend this one because it covers most of the important points from the original book, plus adds useful applications to personal life. The numerous examples and exercises will probably prove useful to many readers who want to be more gently guided through these important concepts. I will say this, I agree so much with the principles of this book, that I've been applying them in my own life for many years now, even using exercises much like those presented by Richard Koch. I teach a course entitled "Working and Playing on Purpose," in which one objective is to motivate people to apply the 80/20 rule to their lives. The 80/20 Principle and the 80/20 Way definitely work. If you will read this book, do the exercises, and take action accordingly, I'm confident that you will see a dramatic difference in your life.
