Book Description

We live among the images we have made, and those images have an uncanny life. They seduce, challenge, trap, transform, and even kill us; they speak and remain silent. Kenneth Gross's The Dream of the Moving Statue offers a far-ranging and probing exploration of how writers, artists, and filmmakers have imagined the power and life of statues, real and metaphoric, taking up examples from antiquity to modernity, from Ovid, Michelangelo, and Shakespeare to Freud, Rilke, and Charlie Chaplin. The book is about fate of works of art and about the fate of our fantasies, words, and bodies, about the metamorphoses they undergo in our own and others' minds.

5 out of 5 stars One of the strangest and most interesting books of literary criticism of the last forty years.......2006-08-04

This is one of the few books of criticism which I return to for inspiration: it reminds me why I decided to become a literary critic. The book constructs a quirky pantheon of stories about statues and bodies: the artists discussed include Shakespeare, Charlie Chaplin, Wittgenstein, Pushkin, and Freud, among others. The arguments are always both surprising and wholly persuasive, and the writing has a sumptuous elegance. I am delighted that the book is being reprinted in paperback, and I hope that it gets the attention it deserves.

    Book Description

Adobe Photoshop has become the tool of choice for professional photographers, designers, and amateur enthusiasts. But it's a complex application with many features-and scant information on how to use them to best advantage. A case in point: there are 100 built-in filters in Photoshop, designed to enable the user to easily make subtle or dramatic image adjustments, and there is very little online help available with the application, and no printed manual. Users can spend hours trying to use filters effectively-an inefficient and often frustrating way to work.

In Photoshop Filter Effects Encyclopedia, author and educator Roger Pring explains and decodes the settings of every filter that Photoshop CS2 has to offer, from Artistic filters such as Colored Pencil, Cutout, and Watercolor to Stylize filters like Bevel, Emboss, and Extrude. And, unlike many reference books that give you a lot of information you'll never need, it is filled with easy-to-follow, step-by-step, practical recipes for creating truly amazing effects, such as:

    and much more.

The best part is that you don't have to be a Photoshop expert to create sophisticated, professional-looking results-the recipes take the guesswork out of the process, so you can work quickly and efficiently. Packed with hundreds of full-color photographs, clearly written instructions, and practical tips, this book is the ultimate, no-nonsense Photoshop CS2 Filters reference for creative photographers, designers, and artists.

4 out of 5 stars One of a great series.......2007-06-12

The O'Reilly Studio put their thinking caps on for all ages and levels of expertise at Photoshop. The step by step instructions with options made this, as well as all their other Cookbooks, a delight to learn from and practice with, in an easy-to-understand format. I would love to see them come out with CD's for their books included.

4 out of 5 stars So You Want to Learn About Photoshop's Filters.......2007-01-18

To be frank, I bought this book because to get free shipping, I had to add one more book to my order of "Photoshop Cosmetic Surgery, by Barry Huggins. It was one of many that I could have chosen for this purpose, but I chose it because it appeared that it could illuminate in detail an area of Photoshop that I was interested in exploring in greater depth than I had previously been able to do. In general, I am satisfied with my choice, although there were some areas where I would have liked greater detail and explanation. This book is not for a newbie to Photoshop. It assumes a reasonable degree of familiarity with the program, and simply proceeds, without fanfare, to describe how to use the many filters and their settings. I recommend this book for a reasonably competent Photoshop user who wants to continue to increase his/her mastery over this wonderful and hugely flexible program.

5 out of 5 stars Having the best of filters.......2006-03-29

As all the collection of this books it is good to have this in your personal library to check out how filters work with different kind of pictures, of coarse these books are directed to professional photos, but you can maybe experiment with your personal as well, I just wanted to point that out because in the book the examples given are for applying filters to pictures you maybe wanna show or give to a client.

But as a reference book is just great, I mean someone took the time to write and visually show you all the filters in photoshop and as its name it is a real encyclopedia, where you can look every filter how is going to look like and then decide.

Buy this it will always be useful

5 out of 5 stars Great Photoshop Filters Reference.......2006-02-19

Of all the things that Photoshop can do, the Filters option certainly is one of the coolest options available to users. Taking a digital picture or just a standard graphics file, you can use the power of Photoshop Filters to create unique art for whatever purpose you want. From a colored pencil effect to blurring images to one of the newest filters "Vanishing Point", this book is an absolute gem.

If you use Filters on a daily basis and want to see what can be done to take a normal image and make it stand out from the "blah" that is out there in the world, this book is for you. If you are a heavy Photoshop user but want to go beyond the basics of just resizing images and cropping pictures, you will also heavily enjoy this book. Of the 4 books in this Photoshop line I love each one of them and feel that all readers should rush out and pick them all up for their reference.

The only downside of this book really isn't a fair one at all, and that's that I wish there were more pages and examples dedicated to all of the filters covered here. Obviously this isn't a realistic gripe so it's barely even worth mentioning.

    ***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Great filter reference.......2005-12-06

Each filter is described in a page or two and has a very simple introduction and a great "How it works" section with full color examples. Most filter descriptions also include "why you might use this" information which is equally useful. Whether thumbing through for ideas or learning the specifics of a filter, this book educates the reader. It's a no-nonsense, straight-forward reference book.

I have no complaints, it is a great reference guide of the Photoshop CS2 filters.

    Book Description

The 19 tales contained in this volume showcase a character who-- for his time -- was one of the most original concepts in comics, withnearly limitless abilities! Name a power and odds are the Spectre had itand used it in his "take no prisoners" battle against the worst criminaloffenders of the day -- delivering severe punishments that matched (andsometimes exceeded) the crimes committed.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars In 1940 Jim Corrigan entered the Light..........2005-07-01

_I used to avoid reading Spectre stories as a boy- they creeped me out. Don't get me wrong, I used to read the most graphic and disturbing of the old horror comics and magazines, but the Spectre was something different. On some level I knew that the ghouls, zombies, monsters and vampires in the other mags were make-believe, but the Spectre, well, he was the Old Testament Wrath of God. Even as a boy I knew that He was real....

_I found these stories from the early forties were a joy to read. Some of the artwork from this period can be pretty crude by today's standards, but I was pleasantly surprised by co-creator Bernard Baily's drawing. Just about every panel is drawn to a competent standard. In fact there are images, backgrounds, and panel work that are clearly ahead of their time. Some of it borders on the surreal. Even the old over-heavy inking style tends to add rather than detract from the supernatural darkness of the story line. As for the color, it is bright, garish- and perfectly done for stories of this era. I know that many people have a problem with the costume design of the classic Spectre, but for me it works perfectly. The character looks like a fish-white corpse in a shroud- which I remember is one of the things that helped to creep me out as a kid.

_However, it was Siegel's writing that makes the character. Here is a spirit sent back to earth to battle crime and uphold justice- until it is totally obliterated from earth. I didn't realize it, but Spectre was called back to the gates of eternity early in his mission because "the Voice" who assigned him his mission decided that it was too much for one man. Yet, in order to return to earth to save an innocent life, Jim Corrigan refused eternal rest to return to earth to fight evil for eternity. No longer strictly human- and barred from heaven for eternity- by his own choice to protect the innocent. That sums up the isolation and nobility of the character. As for "harshness" of the techniques that the character uses against the wicked, well, these are the most sociopathic of the old-style gangsters. Nothing less would be justice- and the Spectre as a mind reader knows exactly what these monsters did- and why. One other thing- in the very first story Jim Corrigan goes into the "streaming light" to encounter a Higher Force at the gates of eternity that sends him back because his mission on earth is unfinished. This was in 1940- long before near-death experiences had been popularized...

_The book itself is a thing of beauty with its black leatherette finish; heavy, glossy paper; and high quality printing. This is truly archive quality work, as it should be, for these stories should last forever.

5 out of 5 stars The beginnings of one of my favorite characters.......2005-01-06

I'm a sucker for DC's supernatural characters, such as The Phantom Stranger, Etrigan the Demon and The Spectre, so it was with great excitement that I bought this book. I mean: the original stories of one of my favorite characters, what's not to like?
I wasn't disappointed either. Sure the stories are simplistic by today's standards, but at the time I'm quite sure they were extraordinary. The introduction states that with The Spectre, Jerry Siegel was hoping to establish a third archetypal hero, after Superman and Batman. Do I think he succeeded? Yes and no. While, he indeed create a new style of character, it never seemed to have caught on quite the same way Superman and Batman did.
If you really want to see The Spectre at his best, then pick the Ostrander/Mandrake issues from the 90s. Great stuff.

    4 out of 5 stars It is a trip-Nemo Watch out!!!.......2003-11-02

The Spectre reminds me of Little Nemo in Slumberland. Anything can happen and often does in the Spectre. From throwing stars at a villian the size of a world to talking to the recently dead on a huge stairway to heaven the images stay with you long after you close the book.

    A haunting read!!!

3 out of 5 stars Appreciate it for its originality.......2003-05-19

Jerry Siegel's writing is energetic and fast-paced, and Bernard Bailey's art gives The Spectre a simultaneously bright and creepy feel. As stated in the previous review, The Spectre himself was a truly original idea for the time. He dresses unlike any other hero of his day, and his powers are almost limitless.

This is, however, my main complaint with this collection. How do you create difficult, dramatic situations for a character with seemingly ultimate power over the entire universe? Why does he not just blink every gangster on earth out of existence? If he can heal the sick and bring back the dead, why not end all disease? And so on... While often providing entertaining scenarios to read, this collection never really answers those questions. Comics historian Jerry Bails tries to justify this in the foreward, but with limited success. Basically, he just says read it and don't think about that kind of thing.

Overall, this is a collection to be appreciated for its scope and ambition above its practicality. If you're a fan of the golden age, I'm sure you'll enjoy this. If you're not, this may even make you one. But either way, I'm not sure you'll end up with a satisfied grasp of the character or his place in the DC universe.

    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly impressive.......2003-05-10

Most of the early war comics from the late 30s and early 40s tend to be the same story told over and over again. While a number of The Spectre stories follow a pattern, they are told with a panache lacking in most other comics of the day.

The Spectre is a slain police detective whose spirit is returned to earth to rid it of crime. The very concept makes it the most original character of its time. Jerry Siegel, half of the duo that created Superman, uses this extraordinary concept to explore the idea of a hero with no real limitations and takes us places no other writer in the 40s thought of. The Spectre faces his enemies with an amazing battery of powers, sometimes just willing them out of existence. He travels to other planets, even other dimensions.

Bernard Bailey's illustration, while not spectacular, holds up to just about any other artist of the day, with the possible exception of Bill Everett. The costume he created for The Spectre is unusual, break the unwritten rule of the era. Heroes were always dressed in primary colors and villians in seconday. The Spectre is garbed in green and white. It is suitably erie for a rather creepy character. (Green Lanten would later break this rule as well, dressed in a tacky orange, green and purple ensemble.)

This is actually some of the best the golden age of comics has to offer.

    Book Description

Never fly without reading this book. A valuable tool for fearful flyers, frequent flyers, first time flyers and anyone who wants to stay healthy on an airplane. Hunorously written by a female pilot and fancifully illustrated. Learn which remedies to take for fear, jet lag, ear aches, air sickness, colds and more.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2006-03-09

Ms. Anderson's attitude throughout the book is condescending and smug. The list of "commandments" (such as "Worship the Pilot"), speak more to a battered ego than compassion for the timid flyer. The entire tone of the book is one of disdain for the passenger, omnipotence of the crew, especially the pilot, with wise-cracking threats if one is not properly intimidated. I'm not without appreciation or gratitude for the experience of the airline pilot, the cardiologist, or the hazmat team, but I find it offensive to have it hammered into me as karmic law. Try reading Patrick Smith's Ask the Pilot, which is at once informative and thought provoking.

2 out of 5 stars Booklet of minimal aid and interest.......2005-01-13

This is a very small book from a vanity press that has churned out other titles on hemorrhoids and pet care. While the author, an experienced pilot, is no doubt knowledgeable, the book itself is spotty, repetitious, poorly punctuated and just not worth its price. It comes up in searches for books on overcoming flying anxieties, and while it does touch on that topic, there are far better and more comprehensive books to be read for that. In fact, until the section that is dedicated to alleviating those fears, the author demonstrates a rather sadistic attitude about potential plane disasters, so the more phobic will probably want to avoid this book.

Also, a good chunk of the text is dedicated to recommending various quackery to relieve the health hazards of flying with flower tinctures and the like, and the writer lets the lecture bleed into the evils of things such as sugar and soft drinks in general rather than sticking to the issue at hand.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but has a lot of questionable info, too.......2003-12-24

I love to fly--choosing a four-hour flight with a two hours of airport time over a six hour drive is a no-brainer for me. I find airports and airlines fascinating, and I picked this book to learn more about the ins-and-outs of flight itself, not to resolve any fears of flying.

There is a good bit of decent information contained within The Backseat Flyer; after all, Ms. Anderson has extensive experience as a pilot. The "survival guide" portion does contain good ideas for those fearful of or even just unsure about what to do to make one's flight the safest and best experience possible, and I found it fascinating to read a pilot's take on passenger travel.

However, the book also contains items of questionable value (and information that at times is flat-out wrong). For instance, Ms. Anderson addresses the idea of catching colds or other illnesses from fellow passengers and says that airlines have gone from bringing in fresh air to recirculating the same stale air repeatedly "to save costs," which is simply incorrect; modern turbofan (jet) aircraft change their air completely out as frequently as every two to three minutes--so in reality you are not at risk of catching a cold, the flu, or SARS from anyone but perhaps the passengers seated directly beside you. She also advocates pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo like "elemental diodes" to reduce jet lag and fatigue, something akin to wearing magnets for join pain (which sometimes "works" due to the placebo effect).

The book is also rather spare; I had hoped for something longer. Yet the illustrations are funny (if not terribly reassuring to the fearful flier!) and the text engaging. I would recommend "The Flying Book" or "From Takeoff to Landing" perhaps as better books of a similar vein, but you may still wish to give this one a read.

5 out of 5 stars Losing the fear of flying.......2003-05-27

A group from our local school is flying across the US soon and one member of the team is afraid of the flight. This book helped everyone understand the training pilots received, the safety precautions taken and that "the more you know, the less you fear..." and, the illustrations are sure to put a smile on your face. There is also great info on how to deal with air sickness.

    5 out of 5 stars What a live saver!.......2003-05-13

I would have to say that until reading this book I had appropriately earned the title of Ms. Most Fearful of Flying. Every noise I heard, every slight bump I felt and every single unknown event that occured while in a plane made me have a full blown panic attack. I had decided not to fly any more and had even boycotted vacations with my family that involved airplanes. Finally my friend decided to purchase this book for me -- what a difference! I officially made a flight from New York to Colorado without the slightest hint of fear. This book tells you everything that you need to know about flying. I even know what's going on in the cockpit. The description is correct you go from backseat driver to backseat flyer, without any fear. I'm so glad that this book was written.

I bought this book and the adventure trilogies that support it to run with my gaming group. It has been an excellent experience. The players really liked the adventures, and found out that Illithids were a lot harder than expected. Plus the new monsters and Psionic powers give the DM something new to throw at experienced players. If you want to have many sessions of great gaming play, DEFINATLY buy this guide and the supporting trilogy

      4 out of 5 stars Quite enjoyable - a fine effort.......2000-01-09

This book satisfies the role-player's ultimate hunger - that for the out of the ordinary. While we are all happy and joyous about the Lammasus, the Kuo-Toa, and the ever-present kobolds in the Monstrous Manuals and Appendices, nothing holds our attention ( whether out of disgust or out of simple curiosity) quite like the alien Mind Flayers. These demi-cephalopods are too alien in nature to stay flat on the page. This is where the Illithiad comes in: it gives us the full scope of the bizzarre Illithid( the second name of the Mind Flayer race) society, allowing us to construct all-the-more bizzarre adventures based on this strange culture. The text deals with all possible aspects of the species; biological as well as social deatails are covered with surprising originality. The wording is as scientificly plausible as it is possible in an RPG ( i.e. you will never read a sentence like " the Illithid heart is just like a human's - six-chambered and green"). First off, let me say that Wizards of the Coast should let TSR continue with these Monstrous Arcana books. If you are a fan of the "Dragon Ecologies" in Dragon Magazine as I am, the Monstrous Arcana series are for you.

This book covers the Illithiad race, also known as "mind flayers" because of their psychic abilities, as well as their penchant for eating the brains of living creatures. While the Monstrous Manual and its appendixes has information on these beings, the Monstrous Arcana expands on so much more so.

This book gives a complete ecology of the Illithid race, including religion, social interaction, eating habits, anatomy, genetic deviations, alliances and hatreds. Diagrams include a typical Illithid village and disection. New Illithid-only psychic powers are in here to, including the harmless, but no less freaky, ability to project the taste of food to another living being (considering these things eat brains like cans of Spam, and that the victims of their brain-eating are alive when the feeding commences, you can see why it can be disturbing) and the ability to "negate" the magic that animates lesser undead creatures, such as skeletons and zombies. Game stats cover the different variation of the mind flayer, brain golems (avatars of their god) and other creatures used by the illithids.

The only disappointment I had was the lack of humor. The first Arcana book I read, "I, Tyrant," had a few funny passages ("What is the best way to kill a beholder? Hire someone far stronger than you to do it."). This book was completely serious (well, as serious as a role-play game can be).

5 out of 5 stars Here is all there is to know about the illithid race.......1998-12-06

This book talks about the life cycle of the illithid, their form of reproduction, rituals such as the coming of age, entertainment, structure of society, new psionic disciplines for illithids exclusively, their view of life and the world surrounding them (individually and as a community).......... Also about ancient history, theology, forms of communication they use beyond telepathy and even more. Although the artwork is pretty average, the information presented here is really ALL you need to know about mind flayers. Excellent work!

good book if you have mastered the basics, if not then good luck my friend cause there is no methods that can really stand alone in this book. But this book will really help you if you have a good method but just want something to confirm buy signals . but i guess if you combine 2-3 methods in this book you might just be able to make it into a profitable method.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for chapter #1.......2006-03-14

TD suppy and demand lines. If I only knew before the rules for trendlines I would have save a lot of time and wasted effort. I can't comment on this book past chapter #1 as I've not gone any further. However, this book is worth the purchase many times over just for the proper explaination of trendlines. As this book was recommended to me for the first 2 chapters, I will also recomend it if only for the first. Before I could look at the same chart of a currency pair and "see" different trend lines. Oh, I think that is one. But now I will look at the same chart and see the same trendlines every time. This goes a long way to making trading a repeatable, measurable proccess... essential to success.

I heard the author speak a few years ago and was bowled over by all the information he covered. I concluded he was either a phenomenal salesman or he was truly an exceptional student of the market. i bought this book as well as one of his other two(?). I knew that if i truly wanted to digest what he presented I had to be committed to studying his techniques. Frustration reigned and interruptions only served to hamper my understanding. Fianlly, after losing countless dollars on sham techniques I learned at seminars and reading books by others I was determined to give the author a serious try. I have never regretted this decision. While nothing is perfect in the investment business I can certainly represent that the author's ideas are fresh, innovative, original and and have enhanced by trading performance markedly. Sure I still have losers and nothing is infallible but his techniques are the closest I have come to providing me with the knowledge and game plan to be a successful trader. Yes, I am making money, lots of it. No, I am not going to share what of his many tools have I found to be the most helpful. That is your job and if for no other reason, it is because some of the methods I may have found to be not to my liking may very well be suited to you and trading psyche. In any case, welcome to the world of a one of a kind trading mind. The author is special and so are his indicators.

5 out of 5 stars The writer is a market genius!.......2006-01-02

Prior to xmas and on my birthday I received a copy of DeMark's 'New Science of Technical Analysis'. I have been a professional trader for over 20 years and currently head up the trading operation at one of the major Wall Street firms. I thought I knew how market operateed and I shared my expereince on TV, radio, and in newspapers for years. Upon reading this book and as well ass the other two in the DeMark set, I have gained a profound new awareness how markets truly behave. The author is beyoind peer in defining and describing the intricacies of price behavior. What an enlightening series of reads.

The author has goen the extra mile to show some old patterns in a new light. lso there is some good explanation about their own trading systems. I feel I am a better trader now with this new knowledge.

          1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-01-14

I bought this book expecting to find statistical techniques as a starting point to technical analysis. Unfortunately, while there are some interesting ideas, the author does not expand on them, rather choosing to give numerous examples which are essentially the same thing applied repeatedly. While he tries to explain the statistical tools in a way accessible to those who are not as familiar to mathematics, I find it to spend too much time trying explain the simple stuff that everyone should know, e.g. how to create a histogram, rather than the more advanced reasoning behind his various tests. As such, he justifies his tools by using the phrase "basic probability theory," which I find to be lacking in substance.

As for the presentation of the material, I also find the quality to be subpar. Many of the figures and tables are at least two or three pages away from the relevant text, which is confusing at best. Also, the author refers to an appendix which is not actually in the book. Furthermore, there some glaring errors, such as referring to the bounds on normally distributed data as Chebychev's theorem, when in fact it's the Empirical rule. Additionally, I found other questionable math in relative price changes section, but on that count, I am not entirely sure that it is erroneous.

Overall, I cannot recommend the book to anyone, it's a shame, because there are some ideas in the book that are worth considering, but they are not covered in any detail and the presentation of the material is such that the book is almost unreadable.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new, just a rehash.......2005-03-10

Having purchased Clifford Sherry's first book ("The Mathematics of Technical Analysis: Applying Statistics to Trading Stocks, Options and Futures") some years ago, I was excited to see a second book ("The New Science of Technical Analysis") appear. Thinking this new book was an expansion of the ideas and concepts presented in the first book, I purchased it.

While I would give Dr. Sherry's first book a 5 star rating, I am slightly disappointed with this second book. Why? There's nothing new in this second book, just a brief redescription of the ideas presented in the first book, along with an analysis of several economic time series.

This book is almost all graphs and tables with very little text. Also, some mistakes appear. The text refers to an appendix that isn't in the book, which is very frustrating. The authors seem to have passed on the opportunity of this second book to correct (what I believe to be) at least one error present in the author's first book.

Overall, I highly recommend purchasing the author's first book "The Mathematics of Technical Analysis: Applying Statistics to Trading Stocks, Options and Futures". The ideas and concepts are innovative and thoughtful and approach the markets with a view not found anywhere else.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this second book as strongly.

4 out of 5 stars Suitable for those entering the field.......2005-02-18

This book does give an overview of some techniques used to analyze financial time series, and some of these techniques are indeed used to analyze neuronal processes in the field of neuroscience, but it might be somewhat of an exaggeration to say that they are inspired by neuroscience, unless you are a neuroscientist who is also involved in financial analysis. The author of this book is an example of the latter, and has written a book that discusses some of the statistical tools he developed for neuronal processes, and how they can be applied to the analysis of price patterns in financial markets. Most of the techniques are well known, and readers with a strong background in probability theory and statistics will find nothing new in the book. However, readers who are in the early stages of educating themselves on the statistical analysis of economic and financial time series should find the book very useful. Most of the page space is devoted to graphs, but the author does give insightful opinions on the use of the statistical tools.

Realizing that a rigorous definition would take sophisticated mathematics, the author gives a nonmathematical definition of the terms `independent' and `random.' An event is `independent' if it is not influenced by the outcome of a previous event in time, and does not influence any events that come after it. Thus the independence of an event must be discussed in relation to other events, i.e. on whether or not past events can influence it, and whether it can influence future events. A `random' event, on the other hand, is one that is determined by chance. The notion of `chance' is related to probability theory by the author, via the law of large numbers. The author also is careful to point out that the techniques he develops in the book can only be applied to `stationary' time series. He again uses a nonmathematical definition, and defines `stationarity' as meaning that the underlying rules that generated the time series do not change with time. If a time series is nonstationary then the rules that generated it change over time. Stationarity, independence, and randomness are the parameters of the time series the author is concerned with in the book, and he emphasizes that these parameters are independent.

The author has developed many of the tools in an earlier book that he has written, and the reader will have to consult this book for more in-depth discussion. He does however include many helpful insights on statistical data analysis. Some of these are: 1. The use of detrending on economic time series that contain a significant trend. What constitutes a "significant" trend is not discussed. 2. The use of the `differential spectrum' to determine if a time series is independent or not. This method is based on the notion that the distribution of positive and negative price changes will be symmetrical for an independent time series. The bin widths and the number of price changes will determine the sensitivity of this method, as the author illustrates using several examples. He also shows how to use the chi-square statistic to compare the relative distribution of positive and negative price changes. 3. The use of the `relative price change' to determine which kinds of serial dependences are present in a time series and to determine the duration of a `temporal window' during which the price changes are not independent. Readers familiar with n-gram methods in computational linguistics will see them here in another guise.

                Book Description

Principles of Chemical Reactor Analysis and Design presents a new fundamental approach and methodology that overcome the deficiencies of the current method of teaching chemical reactor design. It provides engineering students and practitioners with the tools needed to handle contemporary industrial reactor operations, new design capabilities, and the framework for new economic-based optimization.
                Features include:

                - Reactor operations are described by dimensionless variables (in most cases, between -1 and 1) and dimensionless design equations.
                - The design is formulated in terms of the smallest number of design equations and the least number of terms in each equation; hence, the most robust formulation.
Solutions of the design equations provide dimensionless operating curves (a new concept in CRE). These curves provide complete information on the progress of the chemical reactions, the formation (or depletion) of all individual species, and changes in temperature. Reactor sizing represents a "point" on these curves (similar to the way a "point" on dimensionless friction factor versus Reynolds number charts is used).
                - Discusses new design capabilities for reactor configurations.
