Best book out there for quick learning for either English to Spanish or Spanish to English.

Of interest mainly as a reference source, but a risk for the casual reader. Each of the 125 entries contains a summary of the film's context, a sketch of the censorship travails, and a brief bibliography -- encompassing on the average, one to three pages for each entry. Considering the subject-matter, the discussion style remains curiously colorless and detached. Despite the suggestive title, there's clearly no exploitation of the contents. And yet, the text could use some pepping up -- well-chosen photographs would have helped. Moreover, there's no apparent logic behind the films chosen for inclusion, no particular point to the "sampling", and since many of the entries are obscure to the average film-goer, its value as a reference is restricted. Nonetheless, for someone wanting an easily encompassed glimpse of film censorship world-wide, the book may fit the bill.
Hugely inaccurate.......2003-02-12
It doesn't take long to find errors in this book: just read the wholly inaccurate plot synopsis of The Last Picture Show, which is hardly obscure or difficult to find on video, and thus would have been easy to check.
Or how about the reference to a film receiving an R rating from the MPAA *several years prior to the establishment of the MPAA's rating system*?
Had this been a book of insights or analysis, a few such lapses might have been forgivable. But this is a dry reference work, with little interpretation by the author: and dry reference works require a higher standard of accuracy.
A touch of free speech with a sense of lacking.......2002-09-27
Even though this book brings important items out to light, the work itself is lacking and at times incomplete. It also has a strong sense of sensasionalism to it, think of watching NBC on daily news. The mention of films like The Great Dictator as items under censorship and controversy is in itself sensasionalistic, as opposed to Citizen Kane which is not mentioned at all, gives a better idea of how subtle and hyped this work is, besides, the constant reference to the De Grazia book by title Banned Films: Movies, Censors and the First Amendment, makes it look like it is a copy of such book and no actual research was ever done to actualize, itemize or distinguish one text from the other. In short this book could be helpful on legal matters and cross reference from one legal case to another,since it does provide the actual case numbers and states where cases where trialed (picture yourself battling the Supreme court and having this book as a resource for enlightment on appeals, injunctions and motions), as far as film is concerned, I personally know of at least 125 more banned films within one decade alone and after the Hays Production Code or the Christian Legion of Decency to write a book on. Sova deserves credit for sticking it out with the female stars and the sex/erotic/porn oriented genre, but I for one think of film as a much broader medium in which the powers that be relish to exert their power to limit the means of expression whether this be of religious, sexual or political nature. Recommended for the high school reader with a strong suggestion to do further reading

GREAT BOOK !!! I have had this book for many years and have had Many occassions to bring it out. Now my grandchildren are of an age that they like to see "exactly" what I am trying to describe, etc. This will help my daughter in another State to fill in for Grandma and her descriptions. I have had this title for more than 15 years and still find occassions to thank it for being there on my bookshelf.
If you love line drawings, you will love this book. The sketches are neat and detailed. The feel of the book is that of a classic work. In some sections (such as household items, clothing) it is way superior to other works sch as DK's "Ultimate Visual Dictionary".
What it lacks is coverage of articles that have come into existence after 1985. That might sound a huge miss but it is not actually so. I believe you need to pair this book with a more recent visual dictionary.
But there is nothing that can replace this book. The three indexes at the back (general, thematic and specialised) make looking up a word or drawing very easy.
If you are someone who must know the exact word, then you must have this title on your bookshelf.
A Feast for the Eyes and Brain.......2006-05-17
This book is great for those times when you need to describe something to someone and you just don't have the vocabulary to do it. In a matter of seconds, find the piece of equipment, etc. that you are looking for and then you know what all the parts are called. It's like having a whole new vocabulary and hundreds of diagrams.

I have always loved David LaChapelles work. He is a fantastic photographer and this book was well worth it. Depending on your taste, i think i prefer his first book to this one, as this one is a little more provocative. But all in all, he is amazing, and anything he does is worth owning.

Even those who don't like Joan Rivers will love this book! She begins by a lengthy description of her obstretician and the way he makes her arrange her feet in the stirrups. And then (well, Melissa is a grown woman by now) she delves back into her memory bank and delivers the goods in the caustic way her fans have come to love and expect from Joan Rivers.
Don't be put off by rumors of recent plastic surgery. At heart Joan Rivers is a down-to-earth woman with a writing skill that rivals that of the late Erma Bombeck.
By the time you are done, you will have experienced extreme contractions--but of laughter, not pain!

I had a copy of this book when I was pregnant with my first child and absolutely LOVED IT! This was written by Joan at her ultimate best. She covers every embarrassing moment a pregnant woman goes through and finds the humor in it. I loaned my copy out several times to pregnant moms to share the humor, and it finally hasn't found its way home to me and I would love to replace it. If you ever find a copy of this book, snatch it up. It is fantastic.

I purchased this book and found that I should have listened to the bad reviews written about this book before buying. The postive reviews are too good to be true - buyer beware. I agree with the comments of some of the bad reviews exactly:
"The author of this book needs to learn proper home inspection procedures before he sells himself as knowledgable. I have been inspecting homes for 19 years and often give lectures on the topic. After reading most of this book I realized what a waste of money it was because the information was incorrect or incomplete. I can't believe how many mistakes I found in this book. I'm glad I returned it for a refund on my money but not happy I wasted my time reading it!"

Rex Cauldwell has produced a clear, concise, well-written introduction to home inspection that should be easily read and understood by even those with no background in construction.
Not what I would consider a "bible" of inspection, but this book is an excellent place to start.

Good book for the price.......2006-03-18
"Inspecting A House" is about performing home inspections prior to purchasing a home. It contains sections the exterior, structure, electrical service, plumbing, heating, the basement and crawl spaces, interior, insulation, and the attic.
While I am not a professional, I did find this book useful for the cost. The book is easy to read and is fairly exhaustive of the type of problems you could run into and what those problems would look like. The book also contains several diagrams to help illistrate what problems would look like. I would have liked to have seen more diagrams, and even some color pictures... but that would have increased the cost of the book. Like I said, the book was worth what it cost.
The book is targeted to the US environment and codes. Being from Canada, I would have preferred if the author had included us as well... but this isn't fatal. Finally the last part on home renovations seemed to be out of place and far too elementary. The author should have left that part out and done more detail on home inspection.
This book gets the job done for the price. Pick it up for a good overview of home inspections. 3 out of 5 stars.
An excellent guide for home owners and home inspectors.......2000-11-24
This book is an invaluable guide for anyone who owns a home, or is planning to buy or renovate one. The different systems of the house are explored, from the heating system to the roof, with clear descriptions of the typical problems which occur in each of these areas and what to look for.
The pictures, which come from the "Illustrated Home" series of books are clear and certainly worth a thousand words each.
In addition to the technical explanations of the various systems of the house, there is a section devoted to the renovation process, dealing with architects, and information on contracts and budgeting.

This book cuts through the chase and directs one on what is required to do a home inspection in regards to the HVAC components. The book goes into depth on such things as condensing furnaces, pulse furnaces, one and two pipe boiler systems, heat pumps, etc as it relates to the home inspection. The flow of the book makes it easy to follow and is a great reference book to use in the field.

Book is very vague and written in a very run around type format and not getting to the point of what is the subject matter with very limited technical information leaving a person confused as to what is this author talking about, this book is totally not recommended for someone trying to find some detailed expert technical techniques and a waste of time and money.It appears author doesn't want to share his technical expertise in his form of writing. Overall rating 0 NOT RECOMMENDED
