Book Description

The Mind's Eye focuses on the relationships among art, theology, exegesis, and literature--issues long central to the study of medieval art, yet ripe for reconsideration. Essays by leading scholars from many fields examine the illustration of theological commentaries, the use of images to expound or disseminate doctrine, the role of images within theological discourse, the development of doctrine in response to images, and the place of vision and the visual in theological thought.

At issue are the ways in which theologians responded to the images that we call art and in which images entered into dialogue with theological discourse. In what ways could medieval art be construed as argumentative in structure as well as in function? Are any of the modes of representation in medieval art analogous to those found in texts? In what ways did images function as vehicles, not merely vessels, of meaning and signification? To what extent can exegesis and other genres of theological discourse shed light on the form, as well as the content and function, of medieval images? These are only some of the challenging questions posed by this unprecedented and interdisciplinary collection, which provides a historical framework within which to reconsider the relationship between seeing and thinking, perception and the imagination in the Middle Ages.

2005 Author of the Year Award—Working Harbor Committee of New York and New Jersey

2006 AAUP Book, Jacket, and Journal Show in the category of Trade Illustrated Book Design

”Few books can be all things to all people, but this one is an exception. Much more than just a narrow history aimed at tugboat buffs, it has something for everyone. George Matteson, a veteran towboater, has tackled the history of working vessels and has produced a work that is not only poetic and technical, nostalgic and clearheaded, but perceptive of the human and economic dimensions of working on the water. Since towboating in New York reflects the overall course of American industrial, economic, and maritime history, it is a venture into maritime history itself.”
—Steamboat Bill: Journal of the Steamship Society of America

"The seductive promise of the fog-drenched images on the dust jacket of Tugboats of New York is more than fulfilled in the comprehensive contents."
—Sea History

Tugboats of New York is one of those rare constructions where everything works just about perfectly."
—Marine News

"Matteson, who has worked on tugs for 20 years, defines the blue-collar boats' place in the history of America's industrial development and provides anecdotes about life in the harbor."
—Associated Press

"Matteson knows the lore in depth, telling us how tugs work and how crucially they've served the great port."
—San Diego Tribune

"A magnificent book reflecting first-rate scholarship, writing, design, and production."
—Woodenboat

"This gem of a book about 'the workhorses of the greatest harbor in the world' was written by someone who himself has operated tugboats since 1979. . . . The book might even be the inspiration for a future tugboat captain.
—Kivekdale Press

"One of those rare constructions where everything works just about perfectly. The text is insightfully, appreciatively, and masterfully written. The illustrations are informative, handsome, and sometimes—deliberately, one gathers, given some of the credits—quite beautifully artistic."
—Marine Link

"The informative text and copious illustrations- maps, drawings and photographs- make this book a 'must-have' gift for all the New York nautical devotees....Whether weekend sailor or confirmed landlubber, readers of Tugboats of New York will re-discover the lroe of these iconic craft."
—Riverdale Press

"Breathtaking photographs. . . . Matteson's fascinating account of the evolutionary era begins with the geographical formation of New York Harbor, but quickly moves to the era of the vessels themselves. . . . Anyone fond of books about the way things work will enjoy Matteson's detailed explanations; others will relish his metaphors."
—New York Times Book Review

"A handsome account of these durable, powerful, romantic little fellows."
—New York Times Book Review, Editors' Choice

"This sturdy, if little lauded, workhorse of the city's waterways has found a champion in George Matteson, himself a veteran tug operator. His marvelous, handsomely designed Tugboats of New York is both an evocative photo album of tugs at work and a detailed essay on nearly two hundred years of tugboat history.”
—BookForum

"The story of the development of the tugboat industry in one of the busiest seaports in the world is a remarkable one, and Matteson delivers it in rich and lively detail. . . . The photographs alone, with extensive captioning, make this book worth buying. These photos are gems."
—WorkBoat

”His book guides you effortlessly into the world of tugboating, showing you the rope(pun intended) with the ease of a master. You can't help but respect him for both his undoubtedly hard-won insider's view of a gritty profession and his spare, pointed, informative prose.”
—The Waserwoman's Genes

"A brave and jaunty disquisition, copiously illustrated, on the history of tugboats in the port of New York—written with boundless enthusiasm and affection for its subject, and with more than a little longing for the days when ships of all kinds dominated the rhythm of life in and around the city's endless waterways."
—Ric Burns

"Matteson narrates two hundred years of city history from the decks of its tugboats."
—The New Yorker

"Not only does George Matteson possess the been-there, done-that experience of actually operating tugboats in New York Harbor, he also has a gift for evocative language. Matteson's tale is literally a page-turner. The book's photographs of tugs, their crews and their machinery, drawn from many sources, are first rate, with many rising to the level of fine art. Matteson's book is a treasure."
—Richard Stepler, South Street Seaport Museum

”Anyone who doubts the beauty or role of the lowly tugboat will be pleasantly surprised by this handsome new book, which charts the development of the waterfront workhorse in New York City...The illustrations, text and personal anecdotes combine to create an engagingly textured work. Matteson's book would make a welcome winter addition to any maritime library— whether owned by a New York City devotee, a photography fan or a tug enthusiast.”
Mystic Seaport Members Magazine

"Do you like tugboats? Yes, we knew it. Hardworking and cute, what's not to like? Tugboats of New York provides in one elegant volume the whole story for those ready to go beyond a passing crush and learn something about the worker bees of the working harbor which is the reason the city is here to begin with."
—Crawford Doyle Booksellers

Tugboats are the workhorses of the greatest harbor in the world, easing massive ocean liners and garbage scows alike cleanly into their berths. Tugboats of New York captures the history and lore of these iconic craft, from their precursors in the early 1800s to their heyday in the 1950s, when more than 700 small but potent boats dotted the harbor. They are the most versatile of vessels, not only guiding large oceangoing ships safely into harbor, but also conducting rescue operations and navigating vast quantities of oil, cement, and scrap iron through traffic-clogged waters.

A twenty-year veteran of New York tugboats, George Matteson knows the tides and currents of New York from the Bronx to the Verrazano Narrows. His history of tugboating shows how this inherently risky business pits men and their boats against weather, water, and the scarcely measurable physics of ships and barges of far greater dimension.

The story of New York's tugs parallels the broader history of New York's industrial development, from the rise of railroads to the decline of the port in the wake of labor disputes and large container ships. It is also a story of remarkable seamen who pass their craft from pilot to apprentice over generations, along with the lore of great waterways that remain unchanged despite the lengthening shadows of skyscrapers and commerce.

Rich with first-person anecdotes of life on the New York waterways and one hundred and fifty black-and-white illustrations, including rare and sumptuous photographs from the likes of Gordon Parks and Todd Webb, Tugboats of New York will fascinate readers interested in New York history, boating, and maritime history.

5 out of 5 stars From the wheelhouse.......2007-03-08

Outstanding book, probably the best I ever saw.
I'm a retired Tug captain and pilot [Pearl Harbor & Hampton Roads],but I grew up in NY. The author knows his stuff, I learned things about the industry I didn't know.
If you have any interest in the subject this is a must have book if only for the excellance of the photos.

4 out of 5 stars NY Tugboat History.......2006-09-05

This well written book and its fascinating story brought back many a memory, some good and some not so good, from my time at sea on a salvage tug. The research which the author has obviously done is impressive. The only problem with this book is its dimensions.

5 out of 5 stars Very nostalgic for me!.......2006-03-03

As soon as I'd read the New York Times Book Review of this book, I had to have it. Because I was brought up in the New York metropolitan area I was able to enjoy riding the Staten Island ferry to and from Manhatten to enjoy the sights and sounds of the harbor and the tugs going about their business. I also listened in on a short wave radio to the messages relayed through the New York Marine Operator as the tugboat captains got their orders from their bosses on what barge to pick up, where to take it and so on. This book is delightfully written by someone who certainly knows the towing business and who seems to cover every conceivable aspect without becoming excessive. The photographs chosen are of the highest quality and taken by some of the top names among photographers of that era. Many of them are so good, they are "suitable for framing" as the saying goes. Their rendition in the book are of equally top quality and the captions are full of interesting facts and are not just taken from the text of the book but can stand on their own. Very informative and at the same time, easy to read, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to all, especially to those of us who still carry that little boy or girl inside of us.

5 out of 5 stars toooot!.......2005-12-30

I love tugboats and if I get the chance I'm buying one and I'm gonna live on it. This terrific book was a holiday present from my girl friend who knows I want a tug. Did you know tugs are pretty much a NYC invention? - me neither! I do now. Great photos, marvelous history of the NY waterfront.

5 out of 5 stars Two Tugs for One Book.......2005-12-25

This is a beautiful book full of glorious photos and fine illustrations. The text is engagingly written with an insider's knowledge and a craftsman's skill. It breaths life into the history and harbors of New York and makes you want to ride a tug and trade tales with the crew.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Contains strips not easy to find elsewhere.......2000-08-20

This is one of the set of 99 Fawcett Crest Peanuts reprint books, and one of the few that is still in print (as of August 2000). Although the quality of the Fawcett Crest reprint books is generally not as high as that of the other standard reprint series (Peanuts Parade, Topper, Andrews & McMeel, etc.), this book is worth snapping up because it reprints strips from the Peanuts Parade book "The Way of the Fussbudget is Not Easy," which is difficult to find even on eBay. It's true that you may be able to find the Peanuts Classics reprint of the Parade book without too much difficulty, but the Classics version is defective and is missing many strips. If you are a serious Peanuts fan and enjoy seeing strips that you've never seen before, this book is a good one to get.

Those who are not staunch fans of Peanuts, however, may wish to look elsewhere, because the strips in this book date from the early 1980's, which is a period when Peanuts started to decline in popularity. Strips from the late 1950's through the early 1970's have the broadest public appeal. One book you may want to consider is "Peanuts Treasury," which reprints some of the best Peanuts strips from the early 1960's.

This 64 page book is a perfect birthday gift for anyone turning 50. There is a cartoon on every page which tells the 50 year old that they know their age when. . . they're absolutely positive they build stairs steeper these days, they start believing all the ads for hemorrhoids, constipation and hair loss, they sit down to put on their underwear, and they give up trying to learn the names of all the new countries.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, accurate description of a man aging.......2003-10-19

This collection of cartoons strikes home but causes pain only through the funny bone. The funniest cartoons are generally those that accurately reflect on the human condition and describe it with irony. These certainly do that, lampooning the consequences of a man hitting the big five-oh. My favorite was the one with the caption, "Getting a little action means your prune juice is working." The rest are almost as good and had me laughing as I turned the pages. Very funny!

4 out of 5 stars An Entertaining, yet Robust Hike for the Armchair Philosopher.......2005-12-19

Who knew that we would see big-screen heroes like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Keanu Reeves, and Tom Cruise take their rightful places beside the likes of Descartes, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, and Plato? And I don't mean at the Oscars!

In this book Rowlands has brought together several areas of popular interest: philosophy, movies, and science fiction, in a way that benefits all three. It is a rollicking romp through often-dry philosophical fields such as the meaning of life, theory of knowledge, the mind-body problem, personal identity, free will, and ethics.

While the tone is tongue-in-cheek, the content took me deeper down the rabbit-hole of philosophy than many such popular offerings.

4 out of 5 stars See the Movies in a Whole New Light!.......2005-10-23

        This was a great book.

It made me appreciate these movies on a whole new level, (with the exception of the Matrix which I now enjoy for the FIRST time!)

By applying philosophical concepts to movies the author brilliantly breaks them down into proverbial 'apples & oranges'. Be warned though... once you pick it up its hard to put down half way through a chapter! So allow the time!

If I had to have a criticism it would be that some (maybe one, two at most) chapters go a little into overkill... but hey! Better a little more than a little less.

Hope this guy writes another book along similar lines!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Rewarding.......2005-01-12

A great primer for philosophical thought that does not put one to sleep. In fact, this was such a good read, it kept me up late into for several evenings. Professor Rowlands also happens to be one funny man. Very well done.

        4 out of 5 stars A New Genre: Sci-Phi.......2004-11-23

Let me begin by saying that I met the author, Mark Rowlands, on several occasions while he was teaching at University College, Cork, in Ireland. Let me also say that I was extremely jealous when I first came across this book in a bookshop in Cambridge, England. For years I have shown my students clips from science-fiction films such as "The Matrix" (re: Descartes's first Meditation) and "The Terminator" (re: machines without sensation -- Descartes again) and "Total Recall" (re: Descartes's first Meditation again, and Locke's memory theory of identity) when teaching my Modern Philosophy course. But Rowlands beat the rest of us to it and wrote a book in this vein -- an introduction to philosophy by way of popular science-fiction films.

This Winter Term (2005), for the second year in a row, I will be assigning this book for my Modern Philosophy course. (Last time I had to order the books from England; this time they are available in the US). In 2004 my students enjoyed the book tremendously and it proved very useful, especially the sections on Descartes (chapters 2 and 3 on skepticism about the external world and the mind-body problem -- "The Matrix" and "The Terminator"), Locke (chapter 4 on personal identity -- "Total Recall" and "The Sixth Day") and Hume (chapter 5 on free will -- "Minority Report").

The author, Rowlands, is known best for his work in the philosophy of mind and applied ethics (especially the ethical status of animals). I believe that the earlier parts of the book, dealing with philosophy of mind, metaphysics and epistemology, are easily the best. The final parts of the book dealing with ethics -- chapter 6 on "Hollow Man" (why should we be ethical?), chapter 7 on "Independence Day" and "Aliens" (should the scope of ethics extend to aliens?) and chapter 8 on "Star Wars" (good vs. evil) -- are not quite up to standard. Somewhere in between are the parts dealing with the meaning of life -- chapter 1 on "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" and chapter 9 on "Blade Runner".

The book is written primarily for undergraduates. It normally does a nice job of presenting philosophical ideas and problems in an appealing and direct fashion. You can tell that the author is part of the generation that is in tune with popular culture, but has a D.Phil from Oxford and can write about supervenience or Doug Lenat's CYC project.

This makes it all sound far too serious and educational, however. The most important thing about this book is that it is very, very funny. It's funny about philosophy, and it's funny about films too. Exhibit A: ""Minority Report"... also has Tom Cruise in it, not a man you normally associate with complex philosophical issues. I mean, scientology? Give me a break." (p. 121) Rowlands is nothing if not irreverent, and you will laugh out loud while reading this, I guarantee.

So far, I have found only a few factual errors (references are to the English Ebury Press 2003 paperback edition). Heidegger's "Being and Time" was published in 1927, not 1926 (p. 7). Wittgenstein's "Tractatus Logico-philosophicus" was completed in 1918 and published in 1921, not published in 1916 (p. 53). And the Tom Cruise/Cameron Crowe movie is "Vanilla Sky", not "Vanilla Skies" (p. 121). The only philosophical error I have found is that he refers to Occasionalism as "parallelism" (p. 72) (parallelism is a different thesis and can be espoused by a mind-body identity theorist such as Spinoza). But that is just something discussed in a footnote.

I am not always entirely happy with Rowlands' resolutions of various matters in the final sections of his chapters. But it would be unfair to beat him over the head about this. I also find some of the humor to be too laddish for my taste. It's not particularly funny the first time to say how much you love beer and imagined sex with Sarah Michelle Gellar, and it's painful the n-th time. But these are minor criticims of a very refreshing read, on the whole.

well first off you'll probably notice that there is no concrete description of the book's contents. and you'll probably think to yourself 'there's no way they'd make me spend that much for a book of measure numbers and (simplified) chord names without throwing in at least a few transcriptions of solos.'

ironically, you would be wrong, were that your thought. yes, this is a fake book. fine for improvising over, since it gives you pretty bland transcriptions of the melodies and the chord progressions. but don't expect to have any closer glimpse into the music of monk. this will not let you see what notes monk plays, won't let you see the true craft of the pianist.

i had hoped this would turn out to be something like 'the complete charlie parker,' which is to date the most helpful book of solo transcriptions i've found. this was not even close. it's pretty pathetic how few notes are on the few pages of this book. make sure you see a copy of the book before deciding whether it's worth your while or not.

                5 out of 5 stars Monk.......2000-04-12

Just for people who are as lost about this book as I am I researched the author and he is an editor for many jazz fake books so that would lead one to believe that this is a fake book of Monk tunes. I own a Monk fake book, but it's a copy of a copy. But I'm pretty sure this is the one my copy came from.

This is my first negative review on a book but after going through it, it seems to be merely a blunder-gallery of rated players' games, where the author's approach is dictated by the steps :

                1. See the blunder!
                2. chuckle/gasp at the consequences!
                3. Rinse and repeat.

That seems to span the entire book and as far as advice goes, this is terribly lacking for an average player (USCF 1500-1600).

Trying to avoid and eliminate mistakes by watching titled players make them is like trying to ski better in by watching olympic skiers undergo tumbles and mishaps. Somehow, I'd think getting to know the symptoms and avoiding a bad situation is SO MUCH BETTER than letting something bad happen and trying to assimilate a pattern. This book trains the latter, but does nothing for the former.

How about a thought process checklist that goes beyond a "mere blunder check before you move?" How about looking for "warning signs?". How about a gallery of "common opening blunders played by amateurs?" Nope ... the author insists on using only IM/GM games where the blunders come about after moves that no average player might have even played.

The author really should have titled this "Blunders : See how rated players make them and gasp". I feel the "Avoid them : Eliminate Mistakes" portion is an outright lie.

Jeff Cox has done it again. The coauthor of Zapp! and The Goal--bestselling business books that employ engaging fictional tales to advance a slew of practical suggestions--now teams with marketing specialist Howard Stevens to do for sales what his previous efforts did for motivation and productivity. In Selling the Wheel, he crafts a witty story around solid sales fundamentals that Stevens has gleaned from a quarter-century of research and analysis. Its hero is a fledgling old-time entrepreneur named Max who invents the wheel but can't get anybody to buy one. With marketing assistance from his wife ("In the olden days," Cox explains, "women almost always did the marketing"), and guidance from a cave-dwelling wise man, Max ultimately succeeds with help from four distinctly different types of salespeople, dubbed Closer, Wizard, Builder, and Captain. While this may sound silly when taken out of context, the story is entertaining and, more important, filled with sound tips that could help sales professionals and their managers deal with varying evolutionary phases of any product or service. Among its many nuggets: "Silence has been used for centuries as a closing technique. The game is simple. After asking a closing question, say nothing--because the person who speaks next loses." --Howard Rothman

                Book Description

Jeff Cox displayed his remarkable gift for translating complex theories into entertaining stories as the coauthor of Zapp! and The Goal. Now, in collaboration with sales and marketing guru Howard Stevens, CEO of the H. R. Chally Group, he tells a story in the style of an ancient parable to reveal vital lessons gleaned from decades of research on salespeople and customers -- lessons that will help you identify the right way to sell successfully.

Selling the Wheel recounts the story of Max, the resourceful fellow who invented the Wheel and found himself faced with the challenge of convincing people to accept his breakthrough innovation. In so doing, it demonstrates four essential selling styles, each requiring a distinctly different type of salesperson and selling approach. As Chally's research clearly shows, no company can be all things to all customers: sales tactics and strategies must change as technologies and markets mature to reflect new values demanded by customers. Written with humor and filled with practical insights, Selling the Wheel will be treasured by managers, salespeople, and entrepreneurs everywhere.

This is an excellent sale training book told in a format that made it extremely interesting. The "story" format allowed the reader to entertained and learn at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book for those selling breakthrough products.......2007-03-08

I have bought over 10 copies of this book and frequently give it away to entrepreneurs that are tasked with trying "Sell their Wheel".

Similar to, but much more impactful than Crossing the Chasm because of Jeff Cox's brilliant story-telling approach that I was first exposed to in the Goal, which he co-authored with E. Goldratt.

5 out of 5 stars Top recommended book for entreprenuers hiring sales people.......2006-02-18

Hiring your first sales rep is often difficult for entrepreneurs, yet hiring the wrong first sales rep can doom the company before it really gets any momentum. This book gives an excellent analysis of 4 types of sales reps, how to recognize them and when they are appropriate to the organization. I highly recommend this book to my entreprenuer clients.

                4 out of 5 stars Very Insightful!.......2006-02-14

This book is an easy read and packed with lot of wisdom. The author explains the selling process through a story of selling wheels when it was invented in the ancient time. Using the wheel-selling story, the author discusses how different types of sales people fits at different stages of product selling life cycle, what makes a product a world-class product etc. This book is worth reading.

                Selling the Wheel

I am not a sales professional, but I thought Selling the Wheel was a good introduction. It provides EXTREMELY valuable information on sales and marketing.

Sales people are broken into four categories:
                1. closers
                2. wizards
                3. builders (i. e., relationship builder)
                4. captain & crew

This roughly corresponds to (my examples)
                1. luxury car salesman
                2. drug rep
                3. insurance salesman
                4. electronics superstore sales manager and sales crew

My friends who sell thought the categories were interesting. Information about customers, markets, etc., are also organized in this way.

I gave it 4 stars because the story was too long. Also, I really did not see where they were going until about half-way through the book. More of an overview in the introduction would be an improvement. Instead, the authors try to surprise you with the information as the story unfolds. Then you are surprised with a very good overview at the end of the book. There is no table of contents.

Overall, I appreciated it. I can't recommend a better introduction. If you are in a hurry, just read the overview.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT MOTIVATIONAL BOOK.......2006-08-09

In "El hombre que quiso vender la rueda" Jeff Cox and Howard Stevens, using the deserts of Old Egypt as background, present an interesting parabole in which through the characters they explain what they believe are effective selling techniques and methods. They take the reader through different stages: since the manufacturing/discovery or selling of a product until the consumer buys it and the product creates an impact in the market.
This is an excellent motivational/self-help book for people related to sales and for any person interested in learning some sales keys and secrets.
