Not for my top shelf.......2007-02-10

There is no doubt that the author, Maurice Hamilton, made a great effort to produce a technical book about the finer points of using Photoshop to produce black and white images. It is technical and 'dry', and a hard slog. He explains (at length) some of the detailed procedures, tips and methodology which go to making fine prints. But, the book made me think of some of the Hollywood epics where the idea is grand but the director and the editor let the cast down. I don't care for the high price-low quality production of the book, either. Not that worthy and informational books must be slick and glossy; but for me they must be attractive and 'feel' good. I will keep this book in my reference library, but I do not count it in my '20 best photography books' list!

Preserving the art of monochrome.......2006-08-14

Film photographers have long savored black-and-white photography for its stark alternative to realism, and the stripped down, minimalistic approach to creating an image. Digital photography threatened to push black-and-white photography to extinction, but, thankfully, artists like Hamilton have preserved the spirit of the medium and extended it through the use of Adobe's flagship image editor.

The author shows you the proper way to create monochrome images while preserving -- or enhancing tonality. He explains that a good black-and-white image isn't simply a color image that's been desaturated. I also liked the exploration into reproducing traditional darkroom techniques in Photoshop. This is a must-have book for any serious black-and-white worker.

I consider this book to be in a class with the best books written on photography.
I especially appreciate the Ansel Adams quote and the way that Maurice Hamilton lets his own gallery speak for itself. The emphasis is not on showing off his own work but rather, on helping the reader advance their own art. My work has improved significantly since my first reading and I will read sections over several times.

Nice Fine Art Book.......2006-04-22

This is a very nice fine art photography book dealing with black and white. The author is obviously very well versed in Adobe Photoshop and his expertise is evident through his writing. The inforamtion is well presented and clearly stated. The images are well done and have a broad appeal to both a professional and amateur.

Intrigued by the glowing review of this book by Garth Leach at The Daily Shooter.com, I acquired a copy and experimented with several of the black and white conversion techniques described.

Like Garth, I found this book guided me toward the creation of outstanding black and white images. This book seems geared toward the intermediate Photoshop user but should also be helpful to novice users.

this dragonball rocks in it are some great macthes like goku vs. kuririn, goku vs. tenshinhan, and jackie chun vs. tenshinhan. im really mad at viz comics for ending it right at comic 132 the arms race. but here is whats going on goku is fighting tenshinhan for champion they are both using really cool moves and tenshinhan was a bout to use an extremely powerful move.

Kickin' things around..........2003-07-30

The manga magazine SHONEN JUMP brings a never-before-seen volume of Dragon Ball to America. This one begins in the midst of the 22nd "Tenkaichi Budokai" fighting tournament. At the start, cool bald-headed Kuririn is fighting the single-haired, doll-like Chaozu. Kuririn defeats him with an unusual method, but you'll have to read the book to find out what it is.
Later, the three-eyed Tenshinhan goes up against the impostor Jackie Chun (no relation to Jackie Chan). After Chun's stunning defeat, the half-monkey main character, Goku, must fight Tenshinhan.
The next fight is surprising. The "two best friends being forced to fight each other" theme is common in manga, but this time around, it's more interesting.
This book combines astounding battle action with a dollop of humor...Not only that, but this is probably the most clean book of the entire Dragon Ball series...DB Volume 11 is an excellent book for anyone who loves manga.

it was all cool when goku turned super saiyan and was beating frezia pretty bad. It was all great until I got to the end of the book and frezia was still alive!! I had to read volume 12 to see the end of frezia. That cost me another 7.95.

If you're like me..........2005-10-09

I used to be a huge fan of dbz back when I was younger, but it is only now that i actually buy the manga. At first, I was unsure of buying any: most of the reviews are done by kids. So is this a kiddy manga? should I have bought this way back when I was 12 years old watching the edited tv show on cartoon network? Never fear. this volume (and all the other volumes) is well written, entertaining, and actually quite violent. I enjoy it whole heartedly.

Goku-First Super Saiyan in centuries.......2005-01-17

As the Genki dama is used as a desperation maneuver, hope is almost lost in Kuririn, Gohan, and Piccolo. Vegeta's corpse lies on the surface of Namek. The Genki Dama is unleashed, and it seems that Freeza has been defeated. Unfortunately, Freeza is still alive. As Freeza lifts Kurirn into the air, a power starts awakening in Goku. Kuririn is killed by Freeza. BRMMM. GRUMMMMMM. HAAAAAAA. BOOM. Goku has become a Super Saiyan. The one thing Freeza feared has just become reality. Will his tyranny come to an end? When you have a Super Saiyan on your side, lets just say "YOU'VE GOT ODDS"

SUPER SAIYAN AT LAST!!!!.......2003-08-27

Goku hits Frieza with the Genki Dama, but he's still alive, and then he kills Kuririn. This causes Goku to lose it, transforming into a super saiyan! Frieza is dead meat now, even when he powers up he gets thrashed. It's pretty much SSJGoku beating up Frieza for most of the book, but it's still pretty cool. It ends in the next volume(which begins the Anroids/Cell saga, and introduces Trunks). It's an awesome finish to the Goku vs. Frieza fight.

Nothing more than a few tips for the beginner smoker.......2002-02-27

This was the first cigar book I bought, and I outgrew it within a week. Most of the information it presents can be found on the Internet.

I learned a lot from the chapters that introduce basic cigar shapes and wrapper colors and discuss how to store, cut, light, and smoke cigars. But the meat of the guide, the index of cigar ratings, most of which was done in 1996 and 1997, wouldn't be very useful in a cigar shop today. I've found my local tobacconist's advice to be much more helpful.

I learned more about alcoholic beverages from this book than I did cigars. Cognac and brandies, port, scotch and Irish whiskey, rum, and bourbon each have a chapter dedicated to them. Those unfamiliar with these drinks will learn a little about their distinguishing qualities. Unfortunately, there are no suggestions in this book about matching cigars with drinks, but Cigar Aficionado has since posted articles about cigar and drink compatibility on its Web site.

The final few pages of the guide are a personal cigar tasting log in which all but the most occasional of smokers would quickly run out of room. You can of course transfer the basic format of the tasting log to a notebook, or purchase a separate tasting log (tasting log software for PC's and palmtops is available too).

If you're very new to cigars and happen to see a copy of the CA Buying Guide at your local library, go ahead and borrow it. If you want a book about cigars for your bookcase, I'd recommend The Good Cigar by Jeffers and Gordon. Other than that, take advantage of the wealth of information on the Internet.

very informative, but no illustrations, hard to locate.......1999-02-09

This is a very informative book, but unfortunatly, unlike "Cigar Aficionado" magazine, illustrations of the cigars are not included with the reviews, so at times, due to the lack of conformatity in categorizing cigars sizes, it is slightly difficult to identify a specific cigar. Since cigar manufactors have so many different lines with very similiar lenths and ring sizes it is difficult to locate a specific cigar without a lot of flipping around, the reviews are catagorized by "size name", (ie. corona, robusto, ect.), which can differ from manufactor to manufactor.

Cigar Aficianado is one of the leading authorities on the world of cigar's and cigar smoking. The Buying Guide is so much more than that. It includes tips on cutting, lighting, and smoking, liquers that go well with cigars, ratings of cigars, as well as names and addresses of fine tobacco stores and cigar friendly restaurants from around the U.S. This book was a gift to me from a friend and it makes a wonderful gift. If you are an avid cigar enthusiast or just an occasional partaker of the finer pleasure of cigars, you will want to add this book to your collection.

So Much information you could never use it all!.......2007-08-28

This incredible book gives you almost all the information you need to position yourself as the expert on anything. The main theme revolves around the fact that once you write a book, self promotion or getting publicity is ten times easier. "People throw away business cards but they hold onto books forever." What is awesome is that even if you hate writing, they give you lots of ways to motivate yourself to do it. And they tell you how to break it down into bite size pieces and even show you alternatives if you simply refuse to write a book. What this book gave me that was most invaluable was actually the reverse of what I expected. It taught me..........I am not ready nor knowledgable enough to position myself as an expert because I am not willing to do the easy things they give you to do. What a revelation. In fact I bought the book 3 months ago and still am only 3/4 of the way through it, and I am the kind of guy who reads a book in 2 days. This is a complete college course in one book. I am a semi-professional stock market trader and can show one how to make a living trading stocks, but I cannot yet write a book about it so I know my career as a public speaker, consultant and software developer will have to wait. Now I dont have to beat myself up anymore.

The authors bring out an important point-an expert needs a "body of work" to show on demand, sell and prove credibility. This is not a get rich quick book. Thanks to this book, I now know I have another 2 years of research and experience before I am ready to say I am an expert. But what's great, is they show you that once you "are" truly an expert, they give you the map how to proceed and its so simple it is amazing, even if you are an introvert. In fact, I recommend that if you are so averse to making phone calls or introducing yourself to anyone or writing a book but you are an expert..........go partners with someone and have "them' read this great book. The only thing this book doesnt have is methods to find people to share the steps with you, motivate you like a coach or business partner and collaborate on writing the book and the other steps. That would have made it 100% complete. That is what a loner like myself needs. But all in all......5 stars!

Excellent resource - very quick read; but I give it four stars instead of five for one reason:

There were many times that I felt the "meat" was missing from this; I don't believe you can utilize this by itself - you need to combine it with others like Duct Tape Marketing, Get Clients Now, etc. - to fill in the gaps.

That said, some of the examples like the bait piece, were superb.
