Book Description
Famous for their new treatment of heroic, antique subjects and the depiction of the male nude in action, Antonio and Piero del Pollaiuolo ran one of the most successful and advanced workshops in fifteenth-century Florence. This comprehensive and beautifully illustrated book reexamines the brothers’ careers and multifaceted work to present a fresh understanding of their contributions to the development of Italian art.
Art historian Alison Wright draws on new evidence to reassess the Pollaiuolo brothers’ activities as painters, sculptors, and designers and to set their work in the context of the changing social, political, and cultural life of both Florence and Rome. She considers Antonio’s and Piero’s innovations as well as their self-conscious development of distinct products in precious or novel media. The book provides the definitive account of the Pollaiuolo brothers and their practices, a comprehensive list of their works (including some newly attributed), and a fully updated chronology.

Book Description
In 250 glorious photographs Wide Angle: National Geographic Greatest Places documents the beauty and depth of every part of the world. Delving deeply into a picture archive that houses over ten million images, with many photographs being published for the first time, this new book-the third and final in the "greatest photographs" series-presents the world's amazingly diverse places with epic grandeur, unparalleled intimacy, romantic beauty, and gritty realism. The photographs are landscapes, cityscapes, famous landmarks, and unfamiliar spots that reveal special qualities of geography or culture one might otherwise never see.
Spanning more than eleven decades, the images in Wide Angle are divided into twelve chapters, each depicting a unique geography—including East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Polar Regions. Each chapter is introduced by award-winning cultural writer and critic Ferdinand Protzman, whose essays accent the stunning photographs by renowned National Geographic photographers. Both essays and photographs carefully examine a region's special qualities, creating unique character and its own special and unforgettable sense of place. In Wide Angle, National Geographic photographers have recorded the world's places close up, in sweeping breadth, in depth, and over time.
Customer Reviews:
photo book.......2007-02-20
I bought this for my parents for a house warming gift. It is the typical high quality photography associated with National Geographic. Only weakness is that being so large it seems to not be bound extremely well. Has to be handled carefully. Very good.
Good, could be better.......2007-01-23
There are many beautiful pictures in this book.
Some images are really impressive, have soul and cause emotions.
But the way the book was made somehow ruins those emotions.
Some of the best images are "interrupted" by the centerfold. Very poor positioning!
Because the book is so thick, you are unable to appreciate those pictures.
This kind of breaks the magic...
Don't they have a specialist to do this at NG?
The book should be larger, wider. Some pictures are unecessarily small, sharing half of a page with some uninteresting phrase/text.
I am still happy I bought it, it's a nice book and I really like many images, but it was poorely executed. Coul be soooo much better!
For this price, I still recommend it.
Wowed to Blah.......2006-08-11
I went from being wowed to feeling blah about this book...it was like a rollercoaster...up and down. Some of the pictures...gorgeous...took my breath away and others left me quickly flipping through to the next page hoping to see something that captured my attention.
It wasn't what I was expecting in the fact that I was hoping that every single page would leave me meditating upon the picture before me, but still in my opinion it is a keeper as a large portion of the pictures are really stunning.
My other disappointment was the fact that when I think of "greatest places", well I don't really feel that that was captured in this collection of photography. Some of the pictures were random and just seemd poorly executed and the entire book didn't seem to mesh well.
The polar region photographs, which end the book, were perhaps the most disappointing which left me closing the book feeling let down.
Why is the cost so reasonable?..........2006-07-07
...essentially you get what you pay for. This book is certanly NOT representative of what I have come to expect from National Geographic.
I had eagerly anticipated the arrival of my book, but was dissappointed to find within the first few pages that it is uninspiring at best. Most of the pictures are poorly executed and at times seem amateurish. In the past I've found photographs by professionals like Steve McCurry ('Portraits')visually arresting. Not so here.
At least it only cost me $20 oredering from Amazon. If I had been able to preview it beforehand, I would not have thought it worth even the discounted price.
Poor Execution.......2006-06-27
National Geographic Magazine is famous for their excellent photography; it is the very reason I picked up this volume. However, Wide Angle: National Geographic Greatest Places failed to live up to my expectations. I was underwhelmed not only by a large portion of the images, but mostly by the poorly executed concept. In a title that clearly implies these are the greatest places featured, I felt the chosen photographs illustrated some lackluster locales. Furthermore, the organization was too loose. The book could have benefited from better formating not only of its categories, but of the photos themselves, which are often stretched in an unflattering matter.

Warlands is set in a sword-and-sorcery world inhabited by humans and a variety of mythical races, caught up in an endless series of wars against evil forces. In this volume, a woman from the past returns to tell the heroes they must continue the fight to save the world. Although the great ice dragon Eganko was killed and cast into the ocean during the previously chronicled war, her blood is slowly freezing the world, causing the seasons to stop changing

some talented fellas.......2003-12-18
Picked this one up just to try out something new. Like reviewers mentioned for the other Warlands graphic novel, this one has a nice story and the artwork is wonderful. There's mages and elves and demons and the whole works going on, but something about the story doesn't make it seem so 'been there, already done that.' It may be the character development (that doesn't happen nearly enough in many a comic!) and plot twists that occur throughout.
The artists definitely know their way around a piece of paper. If I had to complain, it would have to be about legibility. Sometimes the text can get lost on the page and the artists tendency to fully render out every inch of every frame as well as cropping in so tightly onto a small portion of a scene can make it almost impossible to tell what is being portrayed. The colors were often handled nicely, and it may just be my version of the book, but sometimes they get a little muddy and it somewhat hampers the legibility. But don't get me wrong, if I had one inch of their talent, I'd be one happy individual. I did enjoy this and would recommend it to anyone looking for something fresh.

HEALTH

OPTIMISM

Customer Reviews:
What could have been..........2006-10-18
A nice little collection of quotations, but the author seems to rushed through the book, or was hindered by a tight page count. He could have added so many additional quotations, or tightened things up and added more of higher quality. He seems to stretch for quotations in the latter categories. Nevertheless, it's a nice read.
IF YOU READ THIS ,IT MAY COST YOU.......2004-12-12
Because you will buy the book.Which is good, unless you lose your glasses or get a sty and cant read it.Or you laugh so loud when you read it that you embarass yourself.Or you forget it on a seat somewhere and waste a lot of time searching for it.Oh ,the book. ... TOO SHORT.OFTEN FUNNY. PEARLS OF WISDOM.THE BEST OF ITS KIND I HAVE SEEN.
This is the Bartlett's for the new cyncial world!.......2003-05-07
I really enjoyed this book. It is a little book with pessimistic quotations, but ultimately, you laugh and feel better about life based on the comparative doom in the cynicism. It's a great gift for any occasion, and with inspiration from his Grandma Ethel, may be a great Mother's Day present. Just make sure you tell her you TRULY love her.
Charming, witty, and the perfect antidote to the news.......2003-05-01
The author, Eric Marcus, has does a great service with this. I loved the selections, and I really enjoyed his stories about his Aunt Ethel. Despite the title, these are not really pessimistic quotes. Most all the authors get the message across that life may not be easy, but we move on and get through it. Optimism via faux pessimism? Could be. This is one I really enjoyed.
Very Clever & very timely!.......2003-05-01
I am a fan of quotation books, and this is as good as any I have ever come across. Pessimisms is a great title for it. The quotations, though, could be collected under "realisms", I think.
It must be true about writers that they are at their best when their view is less sunny, not so cheerful. This collection is amusing, thoughtful, and makes a great gift. Marcus does a nice job of weaving in his personal story with the quotations. And, the book is nicely done for an inexpensive edition. A winner all the way around.

Customer Reviews:
Guys Like to Watch Movies with Girls, too..........2004-04-06
I totally disagree with the negative review posted previously. I think movie reviews are entirely subjective (thus the long-standing success of Ebert and Etc.). If everybody thought the same, there wouldn't be a Shrek sequel. Personally, I thought Rear Window was one of the more romantic Hitchcock films, and the restored version is a superb suspensful movie and the romantic tension between James Stewart and Grace Kelly is simply amazing (she passed up "On the Waterfront" to do Rear Window). And yes, the Jay & Silent Bob duo (Kevin Smith, et al) were good in Dogma, but I couldn't make it through "JB...strikes back." So, like all books which provide subjective guidelines for movies (or other media), you will either "jibe" with what the editor/author, reviewer/blogger, have to say, or you won't. True film lovers will usually give any movie a chance (well, maybe not the computer-animated Barbie direct-to-dvd stuff), and that can be an interesting way for couples to find a middle ground and "connect" to different ways of thinking beyond the traditional date night thriller or stab-fest. Movies which couples might not see at the theatre can be more suitable for home viewing on a comfy couch, and thus the value of books like Cinematherapy.
Cinematherapy for Losers.......2003-06-03
When I saw this book had recommendations such as "The Shipping News" and "I'm the One that I Want" I picked it up, hoping that this book could open my eyes to good female-oriented movies. Unfortunately, the book's reviews are nothing short of insulting. Ausin Powers 2 is a good movie for women because it assures us that guys are really good people? What Dreams May Come is a good movie for making your guy realize how sad he'll be when you're gone (emotional blackmail, anyone?)? Rear Window is a romantic movie? What the heck? And I've read their assessment of Moulin Rouge! about eighteen times and I still don't see how the movie is supposed to be sexist.
Also, any book that disses Jay and Silent Bob gets my goat. And then they have the nerve to recommend Stepmom! Yuck.
All in all, this book is nothing but a list horrible reviews for good and bad movies. Don't waste your money and buy another book of recommendations. Hopefully one that recommends Chasing Amy.
P.S. My issue isn't these women's opinions, it's the way they present them. I'd rather have genuine film reviews than "agenda-driven" reviews. That's all you're going to get here.

Because of the strong simple melodies and interesting guitar parts, this became my constant companion on my quest for musical competency. Customer Reviews:
Clear, insightful, personal, terrific for business families.......2007-02-01
By 'clear' I mean relatively easy to read, this is not a textbook. Dr. Ward says himself that it is the most personal book that he's ever written, and I would say that it is his best. Because it is insightful.
One example: of the Five Insights and Four P's, one is 'Policies before the need'. This is something that I've been begging business families to do: establish a policy manual with rules for this and that occasion. Just because your family business is relatively small and simple today does not mean that you can delay.
A problem with other books on the subject is that they are written with a certain kind of family business in mind. This one, however, mentions the first three stages of family business evolution, and lists the 50 lessons under one stage or the other. Most helpful!
Appendix C: A Family Business Checklist made me stop and say "Hey, this question isn't for my business yet." but that only means that if the question and its answer is not appropriate for your business yet, it is still beneficial to start planning and educating. In other words, what is not needed by one generation is essential to the next.
Families in business: listen to this wise man, communicate, and educate.
A must read.......2006-11-14
It is simply the best book about Family Businesses that I read. Besides that, it is one of the few books in this field that has a conceptual structure.
It will be helpful to all people interested in the perpetuation of family businesses.
Perpetuating the Family Business.......2006-07-23
Well written and researched, "Perpetuating the Family Business" is a "must read" for anyone interested in passing their own business on to the next generation. John Ward is not only experienced, but insightful regarding the dynamics that make or break families and family businesses.
Enlightening Lessons for Home & Work, New or Old.......2005-02-03
In a short book, John Ward offers many key findings & synthesized concepts (often surprising, even counter-intuitive) without wasting readers' time but with true-life examples enlivening his conclusions. His research & concisely presented insights match the multi-generational history of our multi-$B family holding company. This work should be on best sellers lists, not only because it is the "Built To Last" for private business, but also because it includes management principles that could be used in public companies seeking to endure.
