Book Description
Just as beloved and cherished as A. A. Milne's stories and poems are Ernest H. Shepard's unforgettable line drawings of Pooh, Christopher Robin, Piglet, Eeyore, and all their friends. The childlike wonder of the Pooh stories is perfectly captured in Shepard's charming illustrations. Collected here are pencil sketches and rare drawings donated by the artist in 1969 to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Some offer readers a fascinating look at the creative process, as Milne's characters take shape under Shepard's care. Those who admire Winnie-the-Pooh will find much to discover in this very special book, a fitting tribute to the man who gave form, shape--and personality--to the most famous bear in the world.
Customer Reviews:
A Glimpse of Shepard's Genius.......2000-11-16
The Pooh Sketch Book is a wonderful look at the creative genius of Ernest H. Shepard. This collection of preliminary sketches for the classic Pooh illustrations is a must for any serious patron of illustration. Shepard's economy of line and his mastery of gesture and movement are even more evident in pencil form. The softness of the medium coupled with the charm of the subject is a perfect combination. Even though Shepard is a well known and well loved illustrator, this book gives you a new appreciation for the artist. The book is well produced and the illustrations are handled well. One does not often find a collection of studies for finished illustrations, and when one becomes available it offers the reader a rare chance to see the masters mind at work. I simply can not say enough about Ernest H. Shepard, and this amazing collection of drawings.
Book Description
Even film diehards have a tough time resisting the instant gratification of the digital camera. Today's digital cameras are more affordable then ever before, and they deliver high quality images that are a snap to share. Plus, you can take risks with a digital camera you never would with a film camera. You waste nothing; there's no film required, and because you only print the pictures you need, digital photography is cost effective and environmentally friendly.
But to take full advantage of a digital camera, you need to be an experienced photographer and an expert at digital photography too. With more than 15 years of experience as a photojournalist, author Derrick Story brings you Digital Photography Pocket Guide, 3rd Edition. For everyone who owns or will own a digital camera (and that pretty much means everyone!), this is the perfect on-the-go guide for taking top-notch digital photos.
In this third edition of the bestselling pocket guide, Story expands on the basic photography techniques that he introduced in earlier editions, including an explanation of each camera component and what it does, tips for choosing just the right settings for your needs, and much more. This indispensable guide covers everything from how to shoot sports action, close ups, and night shots, to dealing with image resolution, archiving, and memory cards.
Affordable and portable, Digital Photography Pocket Guide, 3rd Edition offers full-color photographs, screen shots, and line art illustrating all the topics in the guide's three main sections ("Digital Camera Components," "Standard Camera Functions," and "How Do I?"). Contents are labeled A to Z for quick reference. There's also a comprehensive table of contents and index so you'll waste no time flipping to the specific information you need--whether you want to transfer images, make a QuickTime movie, or just figure out what purpose that mystery setting on your camera serves. There's even a section of easy-to-read reference tables for quick look-up of white balance settings, exposure compensation, camera mode explanations, and plenty more.

good reference.......2007-08-14
This book is a good reference pint to start with for beginners or intermidiate. Cover many topics and list many functions. Good book to have
Very very very BASIC!!!.......2007-08-06
Even though it is a Pocket Guide, I was expecting more from this book. I'm not saying it is a bad book but it is very very basic; practically focussed to those who have never EVER used a digital camera. The only chapter (to my taste anyway) that I find with relevant/interesting/good information is the 3rd chapter where the writer describes some tips on "how to questions". In summary, if you have some experience on digital photography this book won't be that usefull and if you want to learn about aperture, shutter speed and so on..there are better books to learn those subjects.
Happy with this purchase........2007-04-02
I feel this is a perfect little guide for beginning digital photographers. I've been taking photos with my digital for about 3 years now and this little pocket guide still comes in handy and is very useful. It's size is perfect for carrying it with you in your camera case and it gets right to those frequent questions that come up.
A good little book to own!
Book was okay.......2007-03-22
The book I orderd that I thought was going to be better than his 2nd edition fell short. But it was a good book.
Good Introduciton.......2007-03-11
This book is a good introduction in Digital Photography; it shows the hardware specifications and features of most digital cameras, and also techniques on how to take snapshots. It is easy to take it wherever you go; I'm putting it with my camera's equipments.
It was a good help in understanding the basics, especially when I started PADI's Digital Underwater Photography course.

Book Description
When Ranma finds his fellow cursed martial artists unconscious in pantyhose, he discovers a demon is tracking down everyone on the Jusenkyo visitors' registry. Worse yet, the ox-headed, crane-winged monster has kidnapped Akane! Ryoga, Ranma, Mousse, and Shampoo must set aside their differences to save her.
Customer Reviews:
The demon from Jusenkyo.......2005-08-07
One of Rumiko Takahashi's most memorable characters makes his debut, in the sixteenth volume of "Ranma 1/2": The most bizarre "cursee" yet. Too bad he hates Ranma ("cross-dresser!"), Ryoga ("pig-boy") and all the other people -- and is doing his best to make life difficult for them.
First, the Jusenkyo registry book is stolen. Then a mysterious cloaked man has somehow beaten up Mousse, Ryoga and Genma, and left them wrapped in pantyhose. Ryoga can only describe his attacker as "a demon." Eventually the cloaked man attacks Ranma, and Ranma is winning -- until it starts to rain, and the man transforms into a sort of winged minotaur, and flies off with Akane.
It turns out that the mystery cursee is trying to hunt down Happosai, for some weird past offenses. Ranma and Ryoga (in girl and pig form) manage to hitch a ride on the flying "demon," to where he's keeping Akane captive. But the mysterious Pantyhose Taro has more than one trick up his sleeve, and five young martial artists may not be enough to stop him... unless Ranma gets crafty.
Okay, the book actually starts off with a fluffy throwaway story about Ranma and a panda painting going on a date. But it's almost forgettable beside the excellent Pantyhose Taro story. He's a wonderfully warped character, who manages to singlehandedly irritate every major character in the Ranma series -- as well as actually LIKING his curse.
Takahashi actually strikes a perfect balance between action and comedy in this story -- we have taut duels and mid-air battles between the cursed martial artists. Then we have Shampoo's (strategically placed) pantyhose, and the creative insults ("NYLON NAZI! PANTY PRINCESS!") Ranma lobs at Pantyhose Taro. The height of it would be Ranma and "P-chan" playing "Madonna and child."
Despite the fact that Pantyhose Taro is an obnoxious git, Takahashi does make you feel sorry for him -- being christened "Pantyhose Taro" by a little underwear sicko would be enough to make anyone nasty. And in a rare occurrance, we see Ranma, Ryoga, Shampoo, Akane and Mousse all working together for a common goal.
Though Pantyhose Taro only made three appearances in the "Ranma 1/2" series, he definitely made a mark. Funny, action-packed and hugely entertaining.
Hilarious!! A Must Have!.......2001-04-20
The first story deals with a demented Girl-Panda drawing that comes to life and ends up dating Ranma (!)That one is really good for a laugh! The next story is the one that's the most entertaining. You think you know all the characters by now? Well, in Ranma 1/2 vol.16, we get introduced to "Pantyhose" Taro. He is yet another victim of the "Accursed Springs of Jusenkyo", but what he turns into is super bizzare! Let's see if I can get this right: A MONKEY (or Yeti) riding an OX, while carrying an EEL and a CRANE was what drowned in the particular spring Taro was dunked in.(?!) Bizarre! This is an image you have to see for yourself! *On a side note: Happosai not only came up with the name "Pantyhose Taro", but he was the one who accidently dunked Taro into the Spring in the first place; so when Taro sees Happosai, he goes nuts! Anyways, Taro comes in and starts beating up our other unfortunate Jusenkyo visitors: Ryoga, Mousse, Shampoo, Genma and Ranma. I haven't really figured out why yet. So Ranma and the others get into an all-out battle with Taro who shows he's not one to be defeated that easily even when he's fighting Ranma, Shampoo, Mousse, and Ryoga all at once. Like all my other reviews, I don't want give too much away because Ranma 1/2 Vol. 16 is worth getting for your Ranma 1/2 collection.

This book satisfies both requirements of a good anthology. First, it stands on its own as an entertaining, satisfying book. Second, it acts as a valuable map, pointing the way to further investigation should an inspired reader choose to do so. Since it wears its serious intent on its sleeve, political satire finds favor with intellectuals (particularly academics) much more easily than other forms of humor. Thus, you can bet that American Satire spends plenty of time in the early days of the Republic. However, the pre-Civil War selections are very good and quite intelligible to the modern reader. Benjamin Franklin's "Rules by Which a Great Empire May Be Reduced to a Small One" and Washington Irving's "Tales of a Traveler" remain absolutely hilarious. Editor Nicholas Bakalar also introduces a little-known American satirist, Fanny Fern (1811-1872), who deserves a nickel for every newspaper column written since (except the ones for which Robert Benchley deserves a quarter). Even more admirable than the library spadework is Bakalar's inclusion of Art Buchwald, Kurt Vonnegut, Russell Baker, P.J. O'Rourke, and Molly Ivins. Though your favorite author may not be here, it's nice to see that American Satire doesn't suffer from the post-1950 fade-out common in books of the type. This book is an excellent introduction to American satire; it amply demonstrates that in this genre, at least, the United States has a literary tradition that ranks with the best. --Michael Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable.......2000-08-15
I'm 14 and read "American Satire" because I am very interested in the subject. This book was, in my opinion, was enjoyable and interesting. Some of the satire was over my head, therefore a little boring, but the nice thing about short stories is that you can always go back to them. Benjamin Franklin, Will Rogers, Ambrose Bierce, and Art Buchwald were my favorites. This book also gives a little background information on the authors who wrote the stories. My only problem with the book itself was that some of the stories are just excerpts from larger books. I would've liked to see the complete version of the "The Devil's Dictionary" because it is extremely funny. But if your interested in satire or American literature, this is something that you'll want to check out.

great library use.......2000-04-05
I saw this book at my local public library and intend to buyitfor my school library as soon as possible. The photographs areexcellent and absolutely stunning. The text, while easy to read, is clear and consise telling the history and current uses and sources for these three flavors. The yummy receipes are an additional bonus. My hometown of Dayton, Tennesse has a Strawberry Festival each May and I expect this book to be a big hit during the Spring.
Customer Reviews:
As much about cookie jars as cookies.......2005-11-06
With 80 cookie recipes, Steffi Berne presents a pleasant little cookbook. So why then only 3 stars? This is the type of cookbook that will please about half its viewers while leaving the rest disappointed.
The vast majority of the cookie recipes presented here are very complex and would be quite challenging for the novice baker. A great many of the cookies are described as `no too sweet' and use ingredients such as bittersweet chocolate more suited for adult tastes than little taste buds.
On the other hand, since most of the cookies are complex advanced bakers might want to give this a look, as well as people who like not too sweet cookies.
Also, the cookie jar collection of the author is features prominently, along with collector resources in the back. So, if cookie jars are one of your interests, then you should be delighted.
Still I recommend caution before rushing out and purchasing this one.

Yum!.......1999-02-15
Not only was this one of the quirkiest and funniest things I've read in a long time, but it's downright informative, too! Funderburg must have gone through so much research to bring the complete history of ice cream to light. A real treat!

A Classic Collection.......1999-02-05
A classic collection of contra dances in the old style before "zesty" dancing took over. You may be surprised how pleasing these old dances are if you haven't done them in a while. Compared to the frenzied pace of some more modern dances, these seem clean and simple. Page has included newspaper clippings about old dances and the melodies for New England fiddle tunes for a glimpse into the roots of New England contra dance.

Customer Reviews:
specialty coffee.......2006-03-10
A great book for basic understanding of what it takes to start and run a successful coffee business.
Thinking about a Coffee Business??.......2005-12-30
This should be the title "Thinking about running a Coffee Business" I gave this 3 stars because it is very easy to read, straight to the point, does point out some warning signs.
If your already in the business then, forget it.
Very Helpful.......2005-10-26
My husband and I are business people but have never opened a coffee shop....the book was great!
A good starter book, but lacks details.......2004-07-25
I agree with most of the other reviewers. If I were opening a coffee cart or kiosk I'd find this book educational. As it is, it lacks details but does give good basic information. You can start here but "Become a coffee house owner" is far more detailed, with business plans, budgets, specific list of items needed (down to the grease trap), contacts, employees, probably health requirements etc. I did gain some knowledge from this book, but it won't be a point of referral in the future.
Fine for brainstorming but little use otherwise........2003-12-31
Let's imagine you are thinking about buying that espresso stand down beside the street corner near your home. "Hmmm....wonder if that is a goldmine waiting to be mined?"
If so, this book is an adequate first step in your research. It touches a wide range of topics with a scientific, by-the-numbers approach. Therein lies the fault.
You see, entrepreneurship is not a science. It is an art. So, too, is service and great coffee!
By all means, buy of read ESPRESSO! STARTING & RUNNING YOUR OWN SPECIALTY COFFEE BUSINESS first. The ESPRESSO BARTENDERS GUIDE TO ESPRESSO BARTENDING has to be the next book on your journey to making a living brewing great coffee.
Before you buy that espresso stand, though, get hold of RETAIL MANAGEMENT by Ron Hasty and learn why the location of that stand may, or may not, be in a good location for your target market! Bill Anderson.
