        Book Description

This definitive guide to studio lighting explains and demonstrates universal lighting principles that help photographers think on their feet and master lighting theory and technique. Explained are essential concepts such as why light behaves the way it does and how to manipulate it to its best effect. Concrete, practical examples illustrate topics such as shooting light, dark, and reflective surfaces; mastering contrast control; modifying shadow formation to effectively shape mid- and light-colored objects; creating definition in black objects; and using Photoshop to fine-tune subjects. Instruction is also provided on creating simulated sunlight, painting with light, using softening filters, and lighting subjects in motion. Compelling photographs and numerous lighting diagrams are included.

5 out of 5 stars And the light was good.......2007-05-26

Very good book. I found this book when I was doing some internet searches on Dean Collins video on 3D contrast (Which is a great video). Dave Montizambert worked with Dean Collins. This and the 3D contrast tape go hand in hand. I take notes when I read photography books, and this yielded a lot of good information for me.

5 out of 5 stars Easy read, useful stuff.......2006-02-25

This book gives you lots of ideas to make studio photography more interesting and versatile without buying expensive equipment. It's easy to read, has lots of tips and lots of lighting diagrams and example photographs. Author tells you what effects you can do without photoshop, and then tells you where photoshop would be useful.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-01-05

I'm still learning more about lighting, ( I think I will be always in that stage), and this book answered a lot of questions, provided a lot of techniques, to reach a quality studio lighting. There is a lot of termonology here, scintefic knoledge, but you get the infomration that helps you to control lighting in a professional way in your studio.

5 out of 5 stars Very clear and useful.......2005-12-25

The book illustrates the discussion by repeating the same shot with different lighting techniques. You can skim the text and just look at the photos and their lighting diagrams.

I found it very informative to see the effects of something as simple as adding or moving a reflective card . This allowed me to take better photos by buying some mat board rather than spend a bunch of money on new lights.

4 out of 5 stars Don't buy those umbrellas just yet.......2005-10-20

I'm primarily a street photographer, and my studio lighting set up has for years involved umbrellas and reflectors. However, this book demonstrates- without actually stating it- how little control this offers the photographer. (Umbrellas are still useful, but they are not always the best solution.)

The technique of varying not only the source to subject distance but also the origin to source distance is worth the time and money I invested. (The source is your light modifier. The origin is the light itself.)

This is not for beginner photographers or even those new to studio lighting. The author assumes a good knowledge of photography and a basic knowledge of studio lighting. In fact, I feel the need to read it again.

I give four stars and not five because I felt that there could have been a few more chapters.

Note: the title is NOT "How to Choose and Purchase Photographic Lighting". The book is about how to USE Photographic Lighting.

        4 out of 5 stars A great romantic manga.......2003-11-18

This manga trilogy contained in one volume chronicles relationships between humans and genetically engineered people called Unicorns. In the title story, Regg lost his great love Addy in a tragic avalanche on a distant planet, so when her replacement clone arrives on the research station, he is conflicted because this Addy does not have the memories of the woman he loved, and yet he still loves her. In "4/4 (Quatre-Quarts)", young Mori is flunking out of the ESP training program until he meets the mysterious Unicorn girl called Trill. He's drawn to her, but she affects his powers, making them erratic and dangerous. When Mori discovers the secret Trill's guardian is hiding, he finds himself at a crossroads that could destroy his relationship with Trill. "X + Y" takes place years after "4/4" and finds Mori much older and working as a scientist. He meets another Unicorn named Tacto, and is quickly attracted to the young man, but uncomfortable with the notion of same-sex relationships. As the two young men puzzle out their own relationship and find ways to work together as scientists, they also unravel Tacto's hidden history. "A, A¹" is a fantastic romance manga that explores some intriguing questions about love, gender, and sexuality.

5 out of 5 stars One word. Amazing!.......2002-10-16

This manga is the best I've read in a while! The stories are unforgettable, and I highly recommend this manga to everyone who loves love stories. This is not a waste of money, and this is coming from someone who is quite careful on what she buys. BUY THIS NOW!! =D!

5 out of 5 stars Worth your money.......2002-03-31

While most manga, even if you buy a 500 page perfect collection, is read and tossed in about 10 minutes, this is quite different. Of course this doesn't take any longer to read, it's just that the stories within touch a nerve and stay in your head for quite some time. The art and the writing are both equally beautiful. So instead of throwing money away on the next volume of Inu Yasha and forgetting about it 5 minutes later, try this. I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative, compelling, and unmistakably shoujo!.......2000-05-10

A, A Prime is a trilogy of short stories that are sci-fi and yet shoujo in nature. This is not kiddie fare though as mature themes like homosexuality come into play. In the first story, "A, A Prime", a young woman named Addy is killed on duty as a researcher in outer space. A clone of herself is sent to take her place. Generated from Addy's own cells and implanted with her memories, is this Addy truly Addy? Addy's lover Regg wonders. The second story, "4/4 [Quatre-Quarts]", is about a teenage boy named Mori. Mori can't seem to control his psychic abilities. That is, until he meets a beautiful girl named Trill. With Trill, Mori's powers are not only controllable, but amplified beyond comprehension. But Trill is not even human. The third story, "X+Y", features a young man named Tacto. Tacto has always been a guy, until a medical examination reveals that he has pre-developed female reproductive organs inside his body. But that can't be, can it? After all, medical records from his childhood all say that he's male. Besides, he's already got a girl he's interested in...

Although the three stories are separate, the premises in which they take place are the same. It is the future, and traversing from one planet to another is as simple as going abroad. Ms. Moto Hagio places another common denominator -- the Unicorn race. Unicorns look like humans, but they have a distinctive strip of red hair (their mane) in the middle of their heads. Unicorns were originally developed to handle computers, thus they were created without emotions to prevent errors. But as you'll see in the trilogy, Unicorns aren't as unfeeling as they are widely perceived to be. A, A Prime is a unique manga experience -- a truly seamless union of sci-fi and shoujo elements. A good grasp of scientific principles is evident in the way the stories are written. At the same time, A, A Prime manages to be emotionally charged. Ms. Hagio pulls off quite a feat, and she pushes it to the limit. The art is good, albeit quite different from what most of us are used to. No cutesy stuff here. Be warned that A, A Prime contains some homosexual themes. Not to worry, it's all tackled in a very tasteful manner, which is another positive point.

5 out of 5 stars Great manga from one of the greatest shoujo manga artists!.......1999-12-11

Moto Hagio is one of the "HANA NO NI JUUYO-NEN GUMI", literally, the "Magnificent Twenty-Four-Year Group". "Twenty-Four Year" refers to Showa 24--1949. These women revolutionized shoujo manga in Japan and raised it to the level of a literary genre. As such, it certainly is fair to call Moto Hagio one of the greatest shoujo manga artists of Japan ever to live.

A, A' is the sole work by one of the HANA NO NI JUUYO-NEN GUMI to still be commerically available in English translation. It is a mature, insightful collection of 4 tales all unified by the presence of a member of a genetically-engineered race of variant human beings called "Unicorns", who all possess a sheaf of red hair and an inability to express the emotions that they feel. Even Unicorns can experience the love of another...but can they learn to love themselves...?

Hagio's storytelling is brilliant and beautiful, a masterpiece of rare intensity worthy of any reader's bookshelf. However, the reader should have an open mind. The HANA NO NI JUUYO-NEN GUMI are also renowned for their treatment of sexual ambiguity and male-male romance. This proclivity is clear in A, A'; still, I firmly believe that it is in good taste and treated with appropriate delicacy and understanding. There is nothing graphic in A, A'...only four emotionally powerful and majestic stories that will surely enrich the hearts and minds of any who take the time to partake of them. A, A' will move it's readers to laughter and tears.

I cannot recommend Moto Hagio's work highly enough. Please, if you are a person who likes great literature or good manga, give A, A' a try.

I'm absolutely hooked on this guy's writing and am amazed that it doesn't top the bestseller lists yet (just wait it will!). Phil is unintentionally funny. He can't help being this way, but the humor is merely a vehicle to convey deep spiritual truths that are best learned when we are nursing a stomach ache from all the laughter. Every one of us encounters a skunk in life, believes Callaway, but this book isn't as much about the skunks as it is about what to do once they've crawled into our trunk. If you have a friend with cancer or one who has lost a loved one, this is one of the best gifts you could ever give them, apart from an arm around their shoulder.

                          5 out of 5 stars A "Wow" Book!.......2000-03-02

Phil Callaway is a charming writer...knowing when to use humor after knocking you over with great thought or a marvelous and true story. This is a deeply spiritual book, one that will challenge your life. And yet he has the great ability to laugh and make us laugh. This is a very rewarding book. I read it on a Delta airplane on theway to New York City to celebrate my wife's 63rd birthday...and finished it before we landed...many times turning to my wife with a tear gently rolling down my cheek and into my beard, and simply saying, "Wow." So...this is a "WOW" book--I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Change your life...read this book.......2000-02-23

I've always been skeptical when people say, "Read this book...it will change your life." Until I read this book. This is a life-changer, guaranteed. I laughed until I cried and then I re-evaluated my perspective on suffering, on fairness, and on God. I have now bought 20 copies to give to friends. If you read only one book this year, make it this one.

5 out of 5 stars You just gotta laugh.......2000-02-04

This is the first book I've read that I will give to friends who are suffering. I laughed until I had tears rolling down my face.

Here is a review I read in a Canadian newspaper by Joe Woodard of the Calgary Herald. This proves I'm not the only one.

Phil Callaway has just published his fifth book, Who Put The Skunk In The Trunk? While his earlier books were funny, this one will prove both funny and useful-useful because it is funny. Callaway's book is a more practical version of works like Philip Yancey's Where is God When It Hurts or Harold Kushner's When Bad Things Happen to Good People. Callaway does not try to explain the mystery of human suffering, Instead, he tells dozens of stories of people rising above their suffering with faith and laughter. This book is meant for those who have "a skunk in their trunk." The recurring motif of the book is "the skunk in the trunk." When young, Callaway enticed a skunk into the trunk of his Sunday school teacher's car, just before a holiday trip. The teacher and his family started to drive off, but a moment later, skidded to a stop. The man opened the trunk, then slammed the lid, kicked the fender and swore a blue streak. "We all end up with skunks in our trunks," Callaway said. "The question I'm asking here is, what makes some people laugh rather than cry? Rejoice rather than resign?" The book's 40 chapters are grouped into five sections, each illustrating a different "skunkbuster secret." Secrets like:

 The world is full of cactus, but you don't have to sit on one.  When opportunity knocks, don't complain about the noise  Courage is fear that has said its prayers.  Laughter sure beats Prozac, but there's no medicine quite like hope.

"I can't believe the response I'm getting already," said Callaway. "It's only been released in Canada for a week now, and I've had calls for a dozen copies, six copies, one for twenty." "A woman in Ontario called yesterday to order eight copies. She was reading it in a cancer clinic, waiting for chemotherapy. Eight other ladies were sitting there, all gloomy and scared, and she started laughing. They looked at her strangely, so she said, `Would you mind if I read this out loud?' Nobody said anything, so she started reading, and soon they were all laughing, and the gloom had lifted. So she wants a copy for each of them." The power of prayer is demonstrated in the continuing story of the Callaway family's battle with the mysterious seizures suffering by Ramona, the wife and mother. For some five years, the family feared that she was dying of Huntington's disease. But even prayer itself becomes an occasion for levity. A family friend was coping with a house full of sick children, and asked the Callaways to pray for them. The friend began baking cinnamon buns. The glass baking pan suddenly shattered in the oven...so butter dripped onto the burner and caught fire...so she threw flour into the oven to put out the fire...so flour spread all over the wet floor that she had just washed...so he kitchen floor was coated in a later of soapy dough. With that, the friend e-mailed Callaway with an urgent message: "Stop praying!" When Callaway was in his early teens, his hockey team finally went to the championship. Young Callaway himself scored the tying goal, and then, in overtime, the winning goal. "I swatted the puck across the goal line. The red light lit. The girls screamed. But they were not cheering for me. I had just scored into my own net." The climax of the story comes, however, when Callaway went home to face his sick father, who was unable to attend the game. He described his humiliation to his dad, only to have his father respond with laughter. Soon, they were both laughing. "I don't know what laughter is, but I think it's spiritual," the adult Callaway now mused. "Somehow, we're forced to give up our stoic self-control, and that lets us realize that we're not the masters of our own lives. And that's a good thing to realize." "The book ends with our reason for hope," Callaway said. "I wanted to end with hope, because if we don't have that, we don't have much of anything."

                          Product Description

Though sometimes dismissed by critics, particularly in the United States, the Godzilla movies are some of the best-loved but least understood films in the world. The modifications made by American distributors--adding unsuitable footage, making changes in the musical score, even altering the plot--take away from the subtlety that makes the movies so popular in Japan. Then there are the dubbed voices--a matter of ridicule for American audiences and critics alike.

This work is a thorough and critical account of the Godzilla movies focusing on how differences in American and Japanese culture, as well as differences in their respective film industries, underlie the discrepancies in the Japanese and American versions of the film. For each film, there are exhaustive filmographic data for both the Japanese and American versions, including plot synopses, cast, credits, and detailed production notes. The various political and social subtexts of the movies are also thoroughly covered.

5 out of 5 stars Biased, but that is part of it's strength.......2006-01-04

This is a great book for any Godzilla or Japanese film fan. It is written by someone who is obviously in love with Godzilla films and that is actually part of it's charm. You get such an in depth read into the history of each film that it makes watching them a second time a natural reaction. I really like the format too. I own no other filmbook on Godzilla (many on Japanese films though) and I am glad this is the only one as it is very good.

It's one fault in my eyes is the extent the author goes to try and point out racism from Americans in regard to the films. He states in the Introduction he does not want to "accuse anyone of racism" but does so throughout. Examples of critics who find the Godzilla films cheap and American or British films made with similar effects as "good" is hardly an example or racism. Or that since the American release of the original Godzilla had a character "clearly implied" by Raymond Burr as dying early in the film (in which he really didn't) and then pops up later is from the American producers belief that no one would notice since they "all look alike". This after describing several times the lead characters in King Kong as greedy "white guys" but does not describe the color of other race's skin when adressing the Japanese films. I felt it may have been an attempt to make the book more socialy critical, P.C. or maybe just a Japanese aplogist but it kind of took me out of a great attempt to legitimize a "lesser" film genre.

Anyway, still well worth getting even if the Mcfarland $50 tag is a bit steep.

I am not a Godzilla fan (I don't dislike them; I am neutral towards them). But this book is amazing even if you don't care about the movies, because like them or not, Godzilla movies are an important part of our modern culture. This book is detailed, interesting, always enlightening, and very often hilarious to read. A great book can be a pleasure to read even for those who would not be interested in the subject. This is such a book.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Read for Godzilla & Film Fans.......2001-11-15

This is an amazing book and I am absolutely fascinated by it, from both the standpoint of a film buff as well as a Gojira fan. I certainly hope Mr. Kalat does a follow-up now that G is enjoying a rebirth in Japanese cinema (from Godzilla Millenium to GMK and beyond) and the book itself stops at Godzilla v Destroyah, his supposed "death" in Japan. (The plan was to turn the reins over to Tri-Star in the USA, but since the '98 American Godzilla stunk so very much, fans worldwide convinced Toho to revive it in their own image).

Excellent book for both film fan and Godzilla lover. No pictures, no diagrams, no schlock; just great writing and amazing detail.

Boze Hadleigh, author of "Hollywood Gays" and Hollywood Lesbians," strikes again with a real scorcher of a book. This time he exposes the secret world of gays & lesbians in the music business! This book is actually an updated version of his earlier work "The Vinyl Closet."
We are not really suprised at the inclusion of such artists as Boy George, Elton John, kd lang, and George Michael - their sexuality has been well-known for years. But there are some MAJOR suprises for many music lovers, myself included.
Among the older stars discussed, I was genuinely amazed to read about Maurice Chevalier, Rudy Vallee, and several other stars of the 1920s and 1930s.
Among the female singers included, it was no secret during their lifetimes that both Marlene Dietrich and Josephine Baker were "switch-hitters" (bisexual).
Perhaps the parts of this book I found the most fascinating were the "anonymous" interviews with two female singers. They were both BIG in the 1970s, and both continue to have active careers today. According to the author, these singers agreed to be interviewed only if their names WERE NOT used in the book.
Olivia Newton-John is easily identified by her interview "The Story of O," in the chapter entitled "Songbirds." Also in this chapter is an interview with Helen Reddy, also easy to identify.
In both of these, the author really goes out of his way to include enough career & personal info on each star, so the reader will know exactly who it is. Kudos to Mr. Hadleigh! The Olivia interview is a real eye-opener, and an added bonus is a short interview with her (now) ex-husband, Matt Lattanzi.
Several other former big-name singers included in the book are David Cassidy, Julie Andrews ("blind" comment) and Johnny Mathis, who actually gave an interview!
In closing, I must say that I truly enjoyed this book. The only flaws are the omission of a bibliography, a number of spelling errors, plus I feel some chapters could have been better organized.

I suppose this is an interesting read for its intended audience..gay men and women looking for celebrity role models. I personally would have liked to have seen more documentation..a bibliography, something other than hearsay to back up the author's claims.

3 out of 5 stars Lack of Accuracy flaws a really interesting book........2000-02-03

I like the section on my beloved Mathis...the book really couldhave used a bibliography. Otherwise there is a question as to thetruthfullness of some of the author's claims. END

I think this is a very good book. well worth $10 you might pay for a used copy. I will revise my review in the future.

Please answer this question: it is easy to determine resistance, but what about a run away stock? For example, Sperandeo recommends a risk:reward of at least 1:3. But how can you determine an upside target on a stock that's going to new highs that is not totally arbitrary? Please leavea comment.

                          4 out of 5 stars ok.......2006-10-26

He has very some very intresting concepts in this book that can help your trading out allot but i felt the book could have been a bit shorter.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better........2006-09-16

I bought this book based on all the positive reviews. But after reading half of it, I left dissapointed. Although there were some helpful stuff, I felt that Vic rambled too much and had difficulty staying on course. This is one of those books that you can't judge by the title, because a good portion of the content has little to do with "mastering Wall Street". At times I kept wondering whether I was reading an economics textbook. He has an entire chapter devoted to Austrian ideology, business and federal reserve history, and credit theory. Some of the chapters that sounded interesting, Conquering False Pride, ended up being extremely dry and torture to read.

If you are really interested in learning to trade, I'd recommend you read Marcel Link's book: High Probability Trading instead.

5 out of 5 stars A necessary step in one's education on the market.......2006-08-21

So intelligent as to be intelligible even to novices

Vic Sperandeo is a legendary trend follower. In his first book, he describes his technical tools. His approach is simple yet robust. Most techincal analysis litterature revolves around trends in rather complex verbiage. Yet, this is the first book that clearly defines a trend and how to identify inflections.

Usually described as a trader, Vic rightfully points that successful speculators are an hybrid between technical and fundamental analysis.

Also relevant was the probability analysis: where are we now, what are the odds?

His books should be re-read periodically, as the "Reminiscence...", as we progress in our journey on the market

4 out of 5 stars Good Trading Book.......2006-04-13

Trader Vic has some very interesting stories and some great lessons to learn about trading. If I was to make a list of the top 15 books that I have read on trading this one would be in it. Anyone will be able to understand the concepts written in this book. Trader Vic knows his business and through this book will shed some light on how he does it.

In the book Vic tells how to spot a trend and discusses technical analysis. How to spot the tops and bottoms in any market. There is also a lot of detail about economics and what makes the system tick, which as he says he didn't learn in school. Moving averages, booms and busts, and how to manage risk and have a good business philosophy for consistant success are also part of this well written book of trader knowledge. He covers a great deal of useful information in a very compact form that is actually easy to read and understand. This is a must read for anyone in the buisness or for someone just wanting to learn more about trading.
