Customer Reviews:
Be warned int'l photographer.......2006-05-22
This is a great book, to start your business. However, a major drawback is the entry in this book mostly of North America. Alright, that will be OK for starting as this is a very big market. But it is very competitive as well. I'd like to see the international entry grows more, much more in the future editions.
Second drawback --at least to my personal approach, it is hard to choose one company only by looking at the entry in this book. it's just not enough. I need to see their publication and their style, their choice of photos, etc in it. by knowing these, I can feel which one is suitable to my photography. A visit to their website is helpful but not suffice, let a lone by the description of what kind of subjects they accept. One term of "nature" for example has a very broad interpretation and varies from company to company. I found the interpretations are as many as your imagination and only a fraction fit my photography.
Simply sending submissions to the "fitted" company is a suicide in terms of cost, especially for int'l photographers.
Maybe it is only me who experience this, I don't know. but that is. Nothing can substitute of examining the company products first-hands and from time to time. Once again, this issue is important for int'l photographers reside outside of North America.
Despite these drawbacks, the book is very well written and must be very useful for many photographers
Downtime dollars.......2006-01-24
I am a freelance writer/photographer and use the Writers Market for my articles. This book is as valuable to the photographer as the writers' book is to an author. A new channel for your work since everything you do is protected by copyright. Great to use during slow seasons.
2005 Photographers Market.......2005-10-24
I gave this book to my daughter who is a photographer. She just loved all the information available on selling her photographs.
Photographer's Market.......2005-10-15
This book is the most definitive and reliable guide on the subject. It has, if anything, become even more user-friendly and comprehensive over the years.
2005 Photographer's Market.......2005-08-27
This is indispenable if you plan to sell your photos. Very comprehensive information. A must have for anyone really serious about photography.

Customer Reviews:
Classic Ranma.......2007-04-02
If you've gotten to the point where you're thinking of buying Ranma 1/2 Vol. 18, there's not much that can dissuade you. All of the Ranma 1/2 manga scores a 3 or higher. This one is a 4 simply because it's funny, but not hilarious.
You cannot go wrong with Ranma 1/2.
Ranma .......2005-09-10
this vol was funny but then so are almost all of the ranmas
Never Gets Old!.......2003-03-31
Ranma 1/2 just keeps getting funnier and funnier when Ranma has to beat Ryoga by asking Cologne for help by using a cat magic. Too bad Ranma is scared of cats.. anyway I don't want to ruin the whole plot for you go buy the book you will not be dissapointed and you will laugh.
One of the Best in the series!.......2002-01-05
Ranma 1/2, vol. 18 is one of the best in the series. With lots of humor! Humor, that's something that I look for in a book, it's whacked out funny, with a small twist, raging hormones (e.g.: Jealousy), and action filled fun. Though some people may find it stupid, and character situations farfetched, and (I quote my friend) "It's about SEX-CHANGE! What's so funny about that!?" Ranma 1/2 isn't really all that interesting until you are explained about the characters, then once you get the characters, and read the story, you will find it funny.
In volume 18, Ranma's fear of cats is having him in a case scenerio of Shampoo's life, or running away. In the 16th book, Akane gets kidnapped, and what's Ranma supposed to do when his beloved fiancee gets kidnapped? Vol. 2, what does Ranma do when his first kiss is given by an unwanted person (Seriously, what would you do if you were kissed by... Ahem, back to the review). With all these new characters, and odd (Not to mention funny) twists, more fiancees, and more people after the fiancees, it's a great Manga for after a day of stress, and annoyances.
But also, be warned, if you're not into major obesessions, don't read it. But if you want more pleasure, in your life, and don't really care, then by all means, read it!
OK, but..........2001-11-29
It's kinda funny. But Ranma 18 is veeery similar to all the previous books. Pretty much all the plots are based on the old "Akane-getting-mad-for-no-reason" and "Ranma-getting-blamed-for-something-he-didn't-do" jokes. After 18 graphic novels they've pretty much lost all their effect. I got bored after reading about six Ranma, I can't imagine reading, let alone enjoying, all eighteen of them straight (I skipped #7-17)...

Not very clever.......2007-05-19
The book was not what I expected. I didn't find the book to be very clever or humorous. It was a disappointment.
A Great Wee Tome to Pick up the Lein.......2006-05-13
I love Allan Morrison's wee little books with Scottish colloquialisms. This one is quite a little gem, especially if you're trying SASL. (Scots As a Second Language ;-)
It's neat, compact, cute, hilarious, easily fits in your pocket and comes complete with a glossary (something curiously lacking in some other Scottish tomes). I'd also like to add that learning even a handful of these little sayings to memory will endear you to any Scot. A couple of favorites:
"De ye think I'm up the Clyde on a bike?"
(Do you think I'm an idiot?)
"Sodgers wi' big guns beat sodgers wi' pretty dresses."
(Being practical is more important than being presentable)
"Som would flay a louse fer it's skin."
(Some people are so mean that they'd skin a flea for it's skin).
A true delight, well worth the money and easy to understand. A charming volume for anyone studying Scots.
nice giftie for your friend.......2005-04-14
More of a humorous look on Scotland and the oddball sayings you heard your Gran pronounce at every turn. Billed as "gannies' common sense", Scottish grannies are known for taking every thing in stride and always have a saying for each situation. The wee look into these staid philosophises that anchored a way of life is a delight. Accompanying the sayings are cute pen and ink cartoons.
This slim book has over 500 sayings and is a great present for that Yank with Scottish roots!
A good overview of the shrewd Scottish outlook on life........1999-02-10
This is one of the smallest books I have ever read, and was amusingly illustrated by Rupert Besley, who has worked on several other Scottish humor books. The book has over 500 sayings in Lollands (Lowland Scots English -- Robert Burn's language) grouped into 34 categories such as Business, Death, Observations on Life, Love, Marriage, Money, and Work. A one-page glossary of a few of the Scots words is included, but readers unfamiliar with Scots English would be advised to also have Collins' "Scots Dictionary" handy for some of the other words not listed. Under each proverb is the author's interpretation of the meaning, usually based on the category it is filed under. I did not always agree with Mr. Morrison's "translation", as I felt many of the sayings had broader applications than he allowed, or the translations could have been phrased differently to better bring out the point of the proverb. But that is minor quibbling over personal taste. The real beauty of the book is that, here in one slim volume, are several generations worth of shrewd comments on life, as seen through the eyes of our Scottish ancestors. I found it interesting that many sayings I have seen elsewhere called "old English proverbs" had a close relative in Scots. It makes one wonder which actually came first, and whether the saying is actually English, or has been misattributed. All-in-all a fun little book, and a great "bathroom reader". If nothing else, it will help you practice sounding like a canny auld Scot! Book Description
Step into the classroom with Christoph Wolff
Johann Sebastian Bach holds a singular position in the history of music. A uniquely gifted musician, he combined outstanding performing virtuosity with supreme creative powers and remarkable intellectual discipline. More than two centuries after his lifetime, Bach's work continues to set musical standards.
The noted Bach scholar Christoph Wolff offers in this book new perspectives on the composer's life and remarkable career. Uncovering important historical evidence, the author demonstrates significant influences on Bach's artistic development and brings fresh insight on his work habits, compositional intent, and the musical traditions that shaped Bach's thought. Wolff reveals a composer devoted to an ambitious and highly individual creative approach, one characterized by constant self-criticism and self-challenge, the absorption of new skills and techniques, and the rethinking of riches from the musical past.
Readers will find illuminating analyses of some of Bach's greatest music, including the B Minor Mass, important cantatas, keyboard and chamber compositions, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Discussion of how these pieces "work" will be helpful to performers--singers, players, conductors--and to everyone interested in exploring the conceptual and contextual aspects of Bach's music. All readers will find especially interesting those essays in which Wolff elaborates on his celebrated discoveries of previously unknown works: notably the fourteen "Goldberg" canons and a collection of thirty-three chorale preludes.
Representing twenty-five years of scholarship, these essays--half of which appear here in English for the first time--have established Christoph Wolff as one of the world's preeminent authorities on J. S. Bach. All students, performers, and lovers of Bach's music will find this an engaging and enlightening book.
Customer Reviews:
Seriously interested in Bach's Life & Music?.......2007-07-28
Then read this book. Christoph Wolff is one of the - if not THE -
foremost Bach scholars alive today. His earlier Biography of J.S. Bach is
one of the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and readable presentations of
the great Master's Life. Now this book of Essays collects shorter articles and speeches
Wolff has given over the years, exploring a wide variety of subjects having
to do with Bach's music, primarily, as illuminated by recent historical
findings and analysis of his music. For instance:
1)did Bach really leave his Art of the Fugue unfinished, or did he actually
complete it?
2)What do Bach's own markings on his personal copies of several of his
works tell us?
3)How did he adapt an aria from one of the cantatas to have it function as the
Agnus Dei in the Mass in B Minor?
4) Who tacked the chorale onto the end of the Art of the Fugue, and why?
5) What does the structure and import of his Musical Offering really imply
as a message to Frederick the Great, to whom it was dedicated?
Of more interest to the serious musician, who wants to understand in
greater depth the art of arguably the greatest composer in the Western
World, than to the casually interested reader,
this book is a must for any serious lovers and devotees of his music.

Book Description
This collection of essays offers a view of Nazi Germany through ananalysis of twenty films, representing a sampling of the period'sdirectors and reflecting the film medium's major genres. In spite ofthe control that Goebbels's film industry exercised over all aspects offilmmaking in the Third Reich, the films reveal an individuality thatbelies subsuming them under any one rubric or containing them within anyone theory. Films such as Hitlerjunge Quex, Die groe Liebe, andAuf Wiedersehen Franziska represent the Nazi film industry'sefforts to propagandize through entertainment. Others such asImmensee, Kleider machen Leute, and Der Schimmelreiterreveal an attempt to expropriate Germany's rich literary past for theregime. These literary adaptations and films like Glückskinder, LaHabanera, and Der Kaiser von Kalifornien today seem void ofNazi ideology if viewed outside the context of Nazism. But another film,Der ewige Jude, shocks us with its virulent anti-Semitism andhateful propaganda almost sixty years after its release. All of the films treated, regardless of their fame or notoriety or the level ofcommitment of their directors to the Nazi cause, played an importantrole in a cinema that not only represents the dreams and lives of thecitizens of the Third Reich, but influenced them as well.Robert C.Reimer is professor of German at the University of North Carolina,Charlotte.

A wonderful book and collection of rare and thoughtful stills from Germany's GOLDEN AGE of silent film.
Hollywood had a golden age as did Germany, and Kobal presents these striking photos with informative texts as well. A must have.

"Walks us through history in a nicely paced diary format
..A superb project."Rocky Mountain News
Taking the form of a chronological diary from 1600 to the present, this book leads the reader through the centuries, year by year, following the musicians' overlapping and interweaving lives.
The composers' own worlds, public and private, spring to life in extracts from contemporary letters and journals, and in hundreds of illustrations, many in full color. An informative introduction traces the history of music before 1600, and special features discuss key works, influences on musical form and performance, centers of musical energy, and changing working conditions. A companion chronology introduces the wider context of important historical and artistic events.
The reference section includes biographies, a glossary of technical words, charts summarizing the history of music and the development of orchestras, and a guide to CDs and performers. 388 illustrations, 160 in color.
Customer Reviews:
Aptly Titled, Beautifully Illustrated Time Line.......2006-05-14
As the professional reviewers observe this book is extremely limited in its written material, but it does provide a good visual reference to the times that the music was written. Being a Thames and Hudson publication, it tends to focus on British performers in its recommendations of most famous singers and musicians. American performers are given short shrift. Yet I do like it for what it does provide. I got it to go with a fabulous audio class taught through the Teaching Company by Robert Greenberg on the History of Western Music. So, as a short, general, timeline survey it is an adequate, beautifully illustrated reference. For greater depth, this author is a co-editor of a four volume treatise on the subject. That, and several others are referenced in the bibliography.

Preferred to Robert's.......2007-03-27
If you can convince your orgaization to use this manual instead of Robert's, I say go for it! I find this manual much easier to use and more in line with what people expect to be the procedures for having meetings. The book updates old-fashioned language like, "I move the previous question" with the more understandable "I move to close debate". The book includes model Bylaws (useful for our Homeowner's Association which is in the process of revision), and a section that explains the differences between this book and Robert's, as well as tips for those whose organizations still use Robert's.
The book is much more readable than Robert's and tends to explain the basic principles a little better. There's a handy table inside each cover to help a member attending a meeting or a presider with proposing and handling motions.
Best Parliamentary Authority.......2003-05-10
The Standard Code is a better parliamentary authority then Robert's. It simplifies and modernizes parliamentary authority, making it more accessible to more people. Dump your RONR and get this work.

If you've always feared having to pull out the ol' Robert's Rules of Order because it was too detailed and complex for the casual social organizations in which you participated, help is here. Someone has realized that, because a group might need parliamentary procedures, it does not need the granularity required by The Parliament of England.
The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure is understandable, comprehensive, logical, refined, and efficient. As it should, it covers all the formal business of holding a productive and respectful meeting. But it also includes procedures that facilitate business for the less formal organization or club.
Necessary jargon is defined in a glossary. The "Often-Asked Questions" section covers many common situations and eliminates the need to look through the chapters for most answers. The book is up-to-date, addressing contemporary and often-encountered situations such as holding meetings and elections via the telephone or Internet.
As a bonus, it serves as a resource to those trying to form an organization. There are chapters to help you prepare documents (like bylaws and financial records) that won't be in conflict with legal and parliamentary procedures down the line. It explains the hierarchy of documents that govern an organization. There's even a section that helps explain some of the arcane procedures in Robert's Rules!
I'm grateful to have found this gem. It deals with all the situations that my clubs have encountered.
An alternative to Robert's Rules of Order.......1999-12-22
One of the best modernised book on the parliamentary procedures.
1st published in 1950, this 3rd edition is revised by the American Institute of Parliamentarians in 1988.Since this publication, many organisations have changed their bylaws to designate it as their parliamentary authority, among them are: American Medical Association and the American Dental Association.
It is the second most popular parliamentary authority after Robert's Rules of Order.
WHAT GROUPS MUST FOLLOW PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE? 'All organizations, such as business, cultural, religious, social, fraternal, professional, educational, labor, civil, scientific, medical, and governmental, are subject to the principles and rules of common parliamentary law. All profit and non-profit corporations and associations and the boards, counsels, commissions, and committees of government, must observe its rules.' Sturgis, p. 3.
This book is undoubtedly one of the best and comprehensive works. There is also a chapter which intended especially to aid persons unfamiliar with parliamentary procedure.
To quote Dr. Floyd M. Riddick, Parliamentarian Emeritius US Senate: 'It is understandable vocabulary makes it usable by anyone, not just experts in the field. All students of parliamentary procedure should have a copy in their library.'
THE Code of Parliamentary Procedure.......1999-11-28
Contains the complete standard code of parliamentary procedure, with each aspect thoroughly explained. This is the widely accepted procedure for meetings (ie United Nations). Very useful for keeping large meetings organized.
