Customer Reviews:
Hidden secrets.......2007-09-05
It's filled with lovely images & the basic steps she uses. You are expected to have knowledge of Painter & Photoshop. What I found lacking was precise details on the retouching with examples of the size brushes she uses & the before and after examples. For instance she has a cottage that she added roses to, but doesn't show you how to do it. She touches up faces to look like a china doll, but not the details of just one stroke or clone. She tells you what she used, not really how. A little disappointing that her best secrets remain secret.
Artistic Techniques with Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter.......2007-09-05
I just recently purchased and have not had a change to work with the details in this book yet. I will say that I am impressed with the information provided for working with both of these programs and your photographs. Author covers pallates, hand coloring, posterization, collages, filters, drawings, effects, retouching, etc. This looks to be a good addition whether you are new or experienced.
Artistic Techniques with Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter: a Guide for Photographers.......2007-03-19
I was quite disappointed with this book. None of the techniques covered are in any way different from the basics of using filters in Photoshop or cloning in Painter that would be covered in a basic manual. If you want inspiration and instruction in the creative use of these two programs, "Digital Collage and Painting Using Photoshop and Painter to Create Fine Art" by Susan Ruddick Bloom is a much better choice in every way.
Comments.......2006-05-19
I agree with the above comments...all one sees is a black cover. The book looks/sounds interesting, but there is no table of contents or example of what is inside the book. This book needs to present more information if you expect one to buy.
Samples can be scary........2006-04-15
I'm sorry, but some of the samples in this book just scare me. The two zombie children have shown up in my nightmares even. I suppose that some of the techniques will take me in the direction I want to go, but I'm praying that I will have better results than the author.
If you are looking for those amazing money making techniques that highend studios are using today, look elsewhere. This is not the book for you and me.

Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This all ends up in a sordid revenge plot, with a dodgy bishop as agent of a sorceror, to recover a magic dagger. Dragavon is there in the middle, as well as a summoned demon, a golem, and others.
Adult comics on the childish side.......2007-06-22
This really is fun - a B&W romp complete with dragons (and there's a surprise for you), centaurs and especially centauresses, and some lovely lady a bit like a mermaid, but with serptine lower body rather than fish-like. And, since this is a very adult comic, the romping turns vividly carnal every few pages. A few scenes get kinky, including a remarkable scene with snake-lady, but the close moments are always consensual and in a spirit of fun.
The people - a term I use in a very inclusive sense - are generally well drawn. A sketchbook in the back shows some of the evolution from first impressions towards finished comic art, something I found very interesting. As so often happens with "sketchbook" material, it came across as filler. The story came to a rather abrupt end when most of the supporting (i.e. female) characters had been killed off. An epilog follows, Our Hero in a tavern some years later, recounting the tale to breathless (and shirtless, and pantsless) babes. One of them asks, "How can that be the end? You haven't resolved anything."
I agree. It's pretty good anyway, but storytelling has been done better.

Great art, Better story!.......1999-09-02
This is one of the most creative series of graphic novels that I've ever seen. It was originally a series of comic books that has been collected in two volumes and I encourge everyone to get both! Willingham is a superb arist who draws mythical creatures and personages with such detail that the viewer believes they actually exist. The hero-fantasy/comedy plot is great fun and answers all the great questions that fantasy fans have always had (namely, "How does a centaur get it on?" and "Does a woman who's half snake really feel anything below the waist?") All in all, great fun. I only hope that Willingham will do more in the series!
The review/description already posted has nothing to do with this book. It appears to be related to a different piece of erotic fiction.
Book Description
It all started with a mysterious letter left at a tiny bookstore for authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. Its closing lines: “We just want people to know about this. The stuff that has happened to us could happen to anyone.” Little could they imagine the remarkable adventure that awaited them as they followed Jared, Simon, and Mallory Grace and a strange old book into a world filled with elves, goblins, dwarves, trolls, and a fantastical menagerie of other creatures. The oddest part is in entering that world, they didn’t leave this one!
Five captivating books!
One thrilling adventure!
The Spiderwick Chronicles
Customer Reviews:
Spiderwick Chronicles.......2007-09-23
I enjoyed the storyline and the whimsical way that it tied all the characters together. Not a Harry potter adventure, but one that holds your interest. Quick, easy read that should be enjoyed by all who read it.
Characters remain constant throughout all five books, and the storyline is easy to follow.

extraordinary cinema.......2000-07-17
So you are interrested in silent movies, at an internatioonal scale, too? Then you definately should take a look at this book! The Austrian director Georg Wilhelm Past has made movies in nearly every country that took to the cinematic phenomena since its invention. G.W.Pabst was born in 1885 in Raudnitz, today's shattered Czechchenia, went to Vienna to take acting lessons. From there he went on to make movies in Germany (Republic of Weimar), France, America, The Third Reich-Germay and Italy. Nearly the same international audience (excluding the Nazis) which came together in 1986 in Vienna, in the Stadtkino am Schwarzenberplatz, Austria to reconsider the importance of G.W.Pabst's cinematic work to the history of film making. This was the event which triggered a still growing scientific and poetic interest in the works of G.W.Pabst. Well, one might say that Siegfried Krakauer and some others have written about Pabst, too. Yes, but Krakauer and especially THE OTHERS made severe mistakes in their reception of Pabst's movies which rendered them useable for the basic facts and approaches only. But with the realization of this book the mark has been made towords a scientific and more profound understanding of G.W.Pabst's films. Also the topics selected for this book do not cover all important movies of Pabst, the content of the articles included are carefully handling the problematic issues, of the life and work of Pabst, that is so essential to scientific writing and authoring. The authors who took to this project with care, knowledge and the sprit of breaking new ground overcame oldfashioned receptions of the silent movie. The authors are Eric Rentschler (on: the director directed by history), Bernhard Riff (on: obsession and opposition in:The Treasure(1923)), Patrice Petro (on: the female spectator in: The Joyless Street(1925)), Anne Friedberg (on: psychoanalysis in: Secrets Of A Soul (1926)), David Bathrick (on: melodrama, history and Dickens in: The Love Of Jeanne Ney (1927)), MARY ANNE DOANE (on: the erotic barter in: Pandora's Box (1929)), Heide Schülpmann (on: the brothel as arcadian space in: Diary Of A Lost Girl (1929)), Michael Geisler (on: battlegound of modernity in: Westfront 1918)(1930 )), THOMAS ELSAESSER (on: transperant duplicities in: The Three Penny Opera (1931)), Russel A. Berman (on: solidarity of repression in: Kameradschaft (1931)), Karl Sierek (on: the primal scene in: The Mistress of Atlantis(1932)), GERTRUD KOCH (on: stairway to exile in: High and Low (1933)), Jan-Christopher Horak (on: Pabst in Hollywood in: A Modern Hero (1934)), Karsten Witte (on: China and not yer China in: Shanghai Drama (1938)), Anke Gleber (on: masochism and wartime in: Komödianten (1941)), Regine Mihal Friedman (on: ecce ingenium teutonium in: Paracelsus (1943)) this movie is forbidden in Germany because it was made during the Third Reich period, so this article weighs in twice to make a conclusions about Pabst's work during this time, Karl Prümm (on: shadows and pale victory of reason in: The Trial (1948)), Marc Silberman (on: the late Pabst in: The Last Ten Days (1955)) and Hans-Micheal Bock (on: Documenting a Life and a Career, a biography of Pabst). May be it is time to add a few words to Pabst's time in the Third Reich. In his own creative life and work Pabst was always intentionally socialistic. During his work in America, while working at A Modern Hero, he refused several offers from Nazi Germany to return and make movies for them. When he return to Europe to attempt the funeral of his father-in-law in 1938 he decides to emigrate to the USA for good. To say goodbye to his mother he visited her in then annexed Austria, where he was surprised by the beginning of World War II at 8th September 1939, an attempt to escape via Italy to America failed. Leni Riefenstahl, the director who became notoiously famous for her work for the Nazi regime, had worked with Pabst on The White Hell On Piz Palu in 1929. When she worked with him again in 1940 she found their relationship totally shattered and recalls Pabst's appearance as cold, empty and broken. Also after the ending of the Third Reich Pabst was never the same again, he had lost most of his great director abilities. As far as Pabst aethetic is considered he made his films right out of his time. The themes sex, moral and power, seen as obsessions an desires that drive people, are substantial to all of Pabst's movies. And it is these affets that compose the movies' subliminal strukture that is almost diametrical to the structure and formalism constituted by S.M. Eisenstein (based on Dave Griffith). The scences are rather composed by the struggle of desire of the actors than and an external story. So let's come to the final conclusion and the question why should you buy this book? First, the book is profound on the issues it touches, even it does not cover the whole of the topic of G.W.Pabst. Also this book is now 14 years old and has never been revised , updated or edited, it still contains some important keys to exploring Pabst's inheritance and this is where all the following research on Pabst starts. Second, this book is still easy and enjoyable to read but still satifying the more firm reader, too. And third, at a price of about $18 this is a bargain. Here in Germany I spent about $100 more to get the little more Information I needed for my scientific treatise about Pabst. So if you are in aesthetic movies, including European silents and especially into G.W.Pabst, the extraterritorial cinema is the book for you.

Customer Reviews:
A pleasant surprise - concentrates on basic principles.......2006-02-22
How often do you find phrases like "made simple" in the title of a book, only to find yourself out of your depth after a few pages? Well, you can rest assured. this book really does stick to the simple things. It tackles the end game in terms of concepts and plans, concentrating on basic principles, which can be applied in a practical way to our own endgame.
After an opening chapter on pawnless endings, we have a chapter on King and Pawn endings, a long section on Rook and Pawn endings, the most common type of ending encountered in practical play, followed by chapters on Knight endings, Bishop endings, Bishop and Knight endings, and Queen endings.
The second part of the book consists of 100 exercises, all taken from practical play, to test to what extent the reader can apply the knowledge gained in the first part. What is surprising is the number of times really simple endings occur in practical play. The 100 positions include a great many taken from GM games. I was pleasantly surprised at how often, after only a few seconds thought, I was able to find the winning/drawing line simply by applying my newly acquired knowledge. But even more astounding was the number of times a GM or very strong player had failed to find the right method. Food for thought here!
There have been many books on the ending written over the years, including a good number in the present millennium, but in terms of value for money I reckon that this one takes some beating. It is yet another example of my oft repeated dictum that GMs are not the best people to write for less able players.
This review first appeared in the magazine En Passant.
For those of us that need help in the endgame.......2004-07-03
How good is it when the author takes time to write conceptually what's going on, place a diagram with arrows, circles and whatever aids are needed to clarify his point and then explain clearly what is it that he wants to do with the position? And how great is it when after five moves the author shows you what happened afterwards with another diagram and repeats the process of analyzing the position and showing you how to play it? I used to think that Concise Chess Endgames was the best way to start to study the endgame but I was wrong... This is the book! This is the book to start studying endgames! I consider that the author must be a superb teacher because he uses all resources available to him to teach. Why can't books on such an arid topic as the endgame be as illustrative as this one?

Combining perspectives of "a doer and a teacher" with experiences of two dozen professional service firms representing the ups and downs of the Old and New economies, Aligning the Stars offers detailed analysis of such firms today--and specific suggestions for their future success. Jay W. Lorsch, professor of human relations at Harvard Business School, and Thomas J. Tierney, former chief executive of Bain & Company (and now chairman of its nonprofit affiliate), interviewed principals at successful and struggling law firms, ad agencies, investment banks, and similar institutions to determine the practices that have helped the best thrive. Their conclusion: "Outstanding firms are consistently able to identify, attract, and retain star performers; to get stars committed to their firm's strategy; to manage stars across geographic distance, business lines, and generations; to govern and lead so that both the organization and its stars prosper and feel rewarded." Their book subsequently provides specific ways these "stars" (key performances critical to organizational success) can be "aligned" (via practices and structures that match their needs with those of the business). Lorsch and Tierney progress logically through client-centered strategies, development- and motivation-oriented people systems, corporate structure and governance, organizational culture, and leadership. A final section aims to help readers succeed in these newly shaped environments. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Every company relies on talent to succeed, but none so much as professional service firms. Within this rapidly expanding, trillion-dollar sector, people are more than "valuable assets"; they are the source of competitive advantage. Indeed, success is determined more by the people these firms pay than by the people who pay them. What separates the best professional firms from their less-successful competitors? And what lessons do their experiences hold for other talent-driven businesses?
In this comprehensive book, respected academic Jay W. Lorsch and accomplished practitioner Thomas J. Tierney draw from rigorous research and decades of experience to provide a practical perspective on how to win in professional services. Their work is based on an analysis of industry leaders in fields as diverse as law, accounting, investment banking, advertising, information technology, executive search, and management consulting.
Aligning the Stars argues that strategic success is achieved by building an organization of executive-level stars whose day-to-day performance reinforces and ultimately achieves the goals of the business. Outstanding firms align stars across business lines, geographies, and even generations. Through compelling real-world examples, Lorsch and Tierney show how successful firms create and sustain alignment via:
· Strategy: Determining which elements of strategy are most important and why-and how effective implementation incorporates organizational realities.
· People Systems: Converting talent into stars, while nurturing "firm first" behaviors.
· Structure and Governance: Organizing around partnership principles-even in a corporate environment.
· Culture: Actively managing the culture to guide-and control-individual behavior.
· Leadership: Exercising effective leadership when the power to control "partner-peers" is limited.
· Careers: Aligning individual stars by helping professionals build a life, not just a resume.
By showing how to integrate strategy, organization, and the needs of individual stars, this book offers valuable lessons for the current and future leaders of every talent-driven business.
AUTHORBIO:
Jay W. Lorsch is the Louis Kirstein Professor of Human Relations at the Harvard Business School.
Thomas J. Tierney is the former Chief Executive of Bain & Company, and currently serves as Chairman of The Bridgespan Group, Bain's nonprofit affiliate.

Strategic Foundations for a PSF.......2003-10-25
This is the first book published by a group of professors at Harvard University that have been studying PSF for nearly two decades. They teach a program called LPSF (Leading Professional Service Firms).
They propose the "star system", which eventually leads to an "Up or Out" system.
To get a balanced view of the subject you must read Maister. He proposes the "One Firm Firm" system which does not "oppose" the "Star system". One of the professors at LPSF in Harvard expressed that he considered "Managing the Professional Service Firm" to be the first "academic" source regarding Professional Service Firms.
Not for serious consultants.......2003-09-13
I've spent over 10 years with Big 5 consulting firms and read this book with a great degree of enthusiasm, given the background of the authors. But I was very disappointed! The book is laced with "feel good" examples about what other firms are doing in running their practices without actually formulating any definitive conclusions or suggestions (as one would find in David Maister's work). It appears more like the authors talking about their experiences/adventures with no particular audience in mind. So if you want to read this book, do not expect any serious advice coming out of it.
Hope this is helpful

Book Description
Recommends alternative promotion models to address the high turnover of the military's general and flag officers.
Book Description
Because professional service firms depend on outstanding professionals, the personal needs, motivation, and careers of individuals are of the utmost importance. This chapter turns the spotlight on the reader, looking at why--and how--the concept of alignment can be as powerful on a personal level as it is when applied to the direction of the firm overall.
Book Description
In professional service firms, where power and influence are more widely distributed than in traditional corporate hierarchies, decisions about organization and strategy go hand in hand. This chapter suggests that firms are more successful in aligning their stars and strategies when their leaders approach these decisions about structure and governance systematically, as parts of a larger, integrated whole.
Book Description
Winning is tough in the dynamic professional services marketplace, where stars drive a firm's strategic decisions as well as the implementation of those decisions. How do outstanding firms achieve their strategic goals given the inherent tensions, complexities, and risks they face in this environment? This chapter examines strategy in depth, outlining the organizational characteristics that promote a firm's efforts to implement its strategy.
