Book Description
A charismatic stage and screen actress. A model whose beauty inspired some of the most arresting images of the twentieth century. A visionary photographer. A revolutionary with deep commitments to communism. A woman whose life, loves, and death were controversial. Tina Modotti (1896-1942) was all of these. Her life was one of almost unimaginable glamor, scandal, and turmoil. This biography portrays Modotti accurately and fairly, cutting through the distortions of myth and rumor that surround her. Perhaps best known as the lover, model, and apprentice of American photographer Edward Weston, Modotti emerges in these pages as a complex woman, deeply passionate in her relationships as well as her art and politics.
Historian Letizia Argenteri examines an array of international historical documents and letters as she traces the path of Modotti's life and career through Italy, California, Mexico, Germany, Moscow, and Spain. Argenteri tells the dramatic story in full detail, casting light on the mysteries of Modotti's life and carefully placing her in the political and social milieu of her time. The many fascinating illustrations in this book further illuminate Modotti's life.

Husband Loves It.......2007-09-08
I bought this for my scuba diving photographer husband as a present. He said it is an excellent book as he leafed through it. Then he sat down to read it immediately. That's quite a positive reaction for him.

good intro.......2007-06-14
good basic intro to digital underwater photos and equipment
Underwater photography guide for beginner intermediate.......2007-02-19
Found this book very helpful. Have some experience with underwater digital photography but found the explainations and examples very helpful. Took it to Palau...and left it with the captain who kept picking it up to read. So am ordering my replacement!
Underwater photography book.......2007-01-10
Very disappointing. I was hoping for a more informative book. This was pretty basic photography. The previous reviews were misleading for me. This was a waste of money.
Very limited information for D-SLR cameras.......2007-01-08
This book is fine for point and shoot, and non-D-SLR cameras. It does have some inaccurate information - at least, information that most underwater photo pros disagree with. It has very limited information for those who are using D-SLR cameras.
Customer Reviews:
uh, this book was like ok or something.......2000-10-11
This book was pretty cool, especially the part when Butthead flushes himself down the toilet. But it needs more pictures of naked chicks.
Pretty damn funny.......1998-05-06
This book is great for a laugh. Quite a lot of stuff on Beavis and Butthead too. One of the funniest books I've read in a long time but it didn't get a 10 because it was too short. Cool pictures of B&B too.
I loved this book!!!.......1997-06-21
Since I love Beavis and Butthead, I went out and got this book when it first came out in stores. In the book, there are hilarious photos, and stories that of course only Beavis and Butthead would have gone through. I loved this book, but I didn't give it a ten because I guess you kind of have to know who Beavis and Butthead are in order to understand the jokes they make or the type of dialect they use. Anyway, I loved this book and would recommend it to anybody at all who likes Beavis and Butthead half as much as I do

Book Description
The legendary Zorro, the masked renegade who rode through the night defending justice in late 18th century Spanish California, became in 1957 the topic for Walt Disney Studios' first continuing live-action series and the name of a new American icon. Based on the stories of Johnston McCulley, the legend of Zorro gave birth to the archetypal dual-identity crime fighter, inspiring the creation of such future pop icons as Batman and the Lone Ranger.
This book documents the conception and success of a television legend that has endured for over 40 years. The opening chapter discusses the growth of Zorro, from Johnston McCulley's creation of the character in 1919 to Walt Disney's adaptation of the story and its 1957 ABC premier, and provides an introduction to the star actor behind the mask, Guy Williams. Subsequent chapters reveal behind-the-scenes aspects of the action show, discussing the secrets of Zorro's fencing technique and daredevil stunts and giving insight into the cast, costumes, sets, crew and music of the episodes. Chapters Four through Nine deal exclusively with the content of the first and second seasons as well as the four one hour specials on Walt Disney Presents. Plot summaries are provided for each episode.
The Zorro legend continued to enjoy worldwide popularity long after the filming of the final episode, and concluding chapters discuss the cultural significance of the legend outside of America, particularly in Argentina, where Guy Williams continued his career as the famous pop-culture hero off the screen.
Customer Reviews:
A must-have for all Zorro fans.......2006-10-26
This book surpasses all previous attempts to document the making of this landmark television series by leaps and bounds. Previously little known behind-the-scene facts are presented, detailed episode recaps with author commentary, rare photos, etc. Truly a must have for all Zorro and Guy Williams fans. Great job, Gerry Dooley.
Delightful Insight and Details to a '50s Favorite Show.......2006-07-18
Gerry Dooley's Zorro Television Companion: A Critical Appreciation is a Must-Have for anyone who loves the Disney Zorro series and Guy Williams. As television's first Zorro, Guy Williams made a lasting impression on children across America for generations to come and is still considered by most to be the definitive Zorro. Readers of this Zorro Television Companion will appreciate Dooley's extensive research: his interviews with people behind the scenes of this memorable TV show of the late 1950s: the masterminds, the stunt people, the writers, the actors, plus bloopers, anecdotes, and numerous rare photos of Guy Williams. It's an easy read enriched by Dooley's sense of humor and his keen eye for detail in each episode. Inside information about sets, location sites, lighting, and camera angles could be beneficial to any film student and anyone interested in early television history.
Unfortunately these Zorro shows are no longer rerunning on the Disney Channel as they did from 1983-2002! But to anyone with tapes or DVDs, I highly recommend this book as a delightful powerhouse of information and some fascinating back story trivia. Thank you, Gerry Dooley, for a timeless gift to accompany a timeless TV show.
An exciting plunge back into the past.......2006-07-17
For all those who followed the Zorro series in the '50s (in my country, Italy, in the '60s) this book is an irreplaceable guide to both seasons. The plot summaries are very detailed, but most interesting are the Author's Notes and Behind the Scenes sections providing precious information about writers, directors, minor actors starring (some of them at the beginning of a successful career) as well as the unavoidable miscues and funny things occured on the set.
The book explains how Zorro evolved from being just the character of a novel to the TV hero inhabiting the dreams of children and adults alike. It also provides an interesting overview of the career of the one and only Zorro, Guy Williams (on this point I recommend Girgenti Lane's The Man Behind the Mask), before and after this popular series.
I really enjoyed reading it and watched all episodes again to check the remarks and comments made by the author.
In short, The Zorro Television Companion is a must, a way of going back to one's childhood, of holding fast to one's dreams...

There are endless debates among fans of Bob Dylan, but one thing many seem to agree upon is that no one writes about Dylan's performances better than Paul Williams. His style is analytical and wildly enthusiastic, and admittedly not for everyone. But those who delve into Dylan's work, especially the fanatics who are always seeking out live-concert tapes, will find his exuberant analysis of Dylan's onstage career riveting. This first book in the Bob Dylan Performing Artist series (a second volume, Bob Dylan Performing Artist 1974-1986: The Middle Years is also recommended) concentrates on Dylan's formative years, and of particular interest (especially now that Dylan's legendary 1966 Manchester, England, show has been officially released) is the critical analysis Williams gives to Dylan's mercurial and confrontational mid-'60s shows. Williams's infectious verve makes reading his Dylan books similar to watching baseball with a friend who really knows the game: your eyes are opened and you find yourself appreciating some brilliant nuances you hadn't been noticing before. --Robert McNamara
Book Description
An in-depth analysis of Dylan's groundbreaking and often controversial work on stage and in the studio. With b/w photos.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Bob Dylan Book.......2006-02-20
This is by far the best book / series of books I have ever read on Dylan. The main thesis of the book is that Dylan is more than anything else a performing artist. That is to say that his primary artistic contribution is in creating spontaneous art in the moment whether that is in a studio or on stage in front of a live audience. Within this framework, anyone coming to interpret and enjoy Dylan's work can build their understanding that the work should be judged not so much as great songs, but great performances of songs. Admittedly Dylan (particularly in recent years) is an aquired taste, but once you have that taste his work is infectious and you can't get enough of it. Thus you can appreciate each permutation of a song as a fresh expression of emotions, ideas, and being in the moment. Great stuff!
What makes Bob Bob?.......1998-03-03
I read this book a few years ago, when I was starting to get really into Dylan's music, and by the time I finished the book, I had an even deeper appreciation for his music. Williams is better than anyone at describing and conveying Dylan's genius. Almost overflowing with enthusiasm, Williams reviews Dylan's earliest, most celebrated albums and concerts with an emphasis on Dylan's unique delivery of the material, rather than foculsing on his simply his words or politics, as many less perceptive writers tend to do. Reading the book makes you see Dylan not as the "voice of a generation" but more simply and accurately as the generation's most visionary artist and performer.
Product Description
Now in small format, here is the first volume of Paul Williams widely acclaimed writings on the music and performances of Bob Dylan. A thought-provoking, in-depth analysis of Dylan s work on the stage and in the studio, much of which has been ground-breaking and controversial. Williams regards Dylan as one of the century s great artists, comparable to Joyce, Chaplin, and Picasso. With black and white photos.
