Book Description
Never before published essays by the widely admired psychologist of art. Arnheim spiritedly asserts art's fundamental achievements.
Rudolf Arnheim has spent a lifetime analyzing the basic psychological principles that make works of visual art meaningful, stirring, indispensable, and lasting. But recent fashionable attitudes and theories about art, he argues, are undermining the foundation of artistic achievement itself.
The essays collected in this volume are written in his familiar, careful, and solidly supported manner, but under present circumstances they amount to a call to arms. Included is a series of miniature monographs on a variety of great works of art. In other essays, Arnheim uncovers enlightening perspectives in the art of the blind, in architectural space, in caricature, and in the work of psychotics and autistic children. He also presents new scientific aspects on the psychology of art and widens our range of vision by connecting art with language, literature, and religion.

Aesthetics of Art.......2000-05-04
With this essays in this book, Arnheim discusses art as art, or rather what makes art. One of his theses is that much of the blame for the current decline of art and of art and literary criticism lies with the fin de siecle mood of the general culture, but much of it lies with those who are supposed to be critics.
Many critics, and unfortunately teachers, subscribe to the belief that the criteria by which a work of art deserves to be held in aesthetic and social esteem no longer exist. Thus, one can hardly blame people for arguing that art is anything they chooses to call it if the very people who are supposed to supply the standards by which to judge what is and is not art assert that any kind of objective criteria no longer exist.
On the other hand, artists are always exploring and innovating. But exactly for this reason, critics should discuss what makes art art. It is too easy to indulge in the easy pleasures of relativism just as it is too easy to answer with smug, superior expressions when people ask what is meant by art.
The solution to rescuing the arts consists in discrimination, once the penultimate critical faculty, in pointing out the common core of sensory expression in all its manifestations-what William James calls the "sifting of human creations." What critics need to do is revive and explore the principles of which all productive functioning of the arts is based. As Arnheim states: "If art is indispensable as a psychological, and possibly a biological, requirement of existence, it must be assumed to grow from the very depths of our being. And if so, these roots must be traceable. Therefore, critics must be heralds of the principles they are retrieving."
But, do not be put off by the political nature of this review. Arnheim is not a polemicist. The majority of the book is devoted to what he states critics need do: discuss art as art, not art as politics. And he does that very well.

The most experienced professionals in any field are the first ones to say there is always more to learn. Often, the best way to learn is to be a fly on the wall while watching a peer. Chris and Trish Meyer have given After Effects users a unique and wonderful opportunity in After Effects in Production, allowing us to look over the shoulders of some of the best motion-graphics designers in the business and watch and learn as they go through the creative process. Unlike the fly on the wall, though, we have the chance to occasionally put down the book and practice what's been learned.
In the tutorials section, the authors break down the process of creating broadcast-quality motion graphics into a dozen step-by-step tutorials. Each tutorial focuses on or introduces a particular feature, and often builds on features that were introduced in a previous tutorial. The enclosed CD-ROM includes all 12 project and media files (and the final rendered movies), giving the reader the chance to build the project from scratch or carefully dissect a project that's already built.
Case Studies, a far smaller section of the book (but equal in value to the rest), explores, breaks down, and dissects After Effects projects that are on the air or on the Web, including work from such studios as Belief, ATTIK, and Curious Pictures. While less step-by-step oriented, one gets the chance to learn why each project was handled the way it was, rather than how.
As an added bonus, the CD-ROM includes numerous free plug-ins from such vendors as Pinnacle, Media 100, Boris, Trapcode, and the Foundry for both Mac and Windows versions of After Effects. There's also plenty of bonus material to read and sift through in the form of PDF files--additional tutorials, tips and tricks, and project templates.
After Effects in Production is a must-have book for any user who intends to grow into a serious designer, or for the serious designer who simply intends to keep on growing. --Mike Caputo

good resource.......2007-01-10
i needed this book for school, and it did the job i learned tons of effect tricks through this book.
absolutely useful and worthwhile.......2006-05-28
if motion graphics is your thing, this is a fantastic resource. Nobody more clearly explains the basic concepts of layering, nesting, timelines, footage, transformations, masks, precomposing, stencils, track mattes, transfer modes, keyframes, rendering, resolutions, plugins, working with audio, and much more.
The "Creating Motion Graphics with AE", and "After Effects in Production" must be considered the best of the best, even for those who may be using other products such as Apple Motion, or Combustion, etc.
Highly recommended, as is having plenty of time and some decent hardware.
The tutorials are a blast ! Go thru them all (this takes awhile folks) and you begin to get the idea....motion graphics is fun !!!
After Effects in Production: A Companion for Creating Motion Graphics .......2006-01-15
This is an excellent resource for After Effects. The "Meyers" Have always produced great learning materials and this is another proof positive of that.
"Professional" learning experience.......2005-04-24
After I bought after effects the software had little interest for me. I never new that broadcasting and such could be such fun. Did a lot of editing for animation studies with this tool. Looking forward to buy the next book when I'm finish with this. Recommended for advance users.
Differences between First and Second editions.......2004-12-19
Note from the authors: The first edition of After Effects in Production (2001, ISBN 1578200776) is now out of print. It was written for AE4.1/5.0, and the CD shipped with free plug-ins for OS9 and Windows.
The second edition is being printed now (December 2004) and has been updated for AE6.5, with free plug-ins for OS X and Windows. The 12 tutorials are essentially the same but where applicable they have been updated to use the latest working practices and keyboard shortcuts. For instance, we use the new Brush tool instead of the Vector Paint effect and the new Text tool instead of the Path Text effect. Also, the motion tracker was redesigned by Adobe for AE 6 so the motion tracking chapter was also overhauled. The 6 Case Studies are essentially unchanged.
The 2nd edition includes a DVD with a Tryout version of After Effects 6.5, along with additional free full-resolution footage from Artbeats and 12 Inch Design that was not included on the original CD.
To quickly locate the 2nd edition on Amazon, search for its ISBN number - "1578202647".
Hope that helps clarify the differences between the two editions.

Book Description
The centuries-old wisdom of the Tao, as told through the profoundly wise and delightfully entertaining illustrations of Tsai Chih Chung.
In The Tao Speaks, Tsai Chih Chung brilliantly retells, through his enchanting and irreverently humorous cartoon panels, the two thousand-year-old text of Tao Te Ching, the inspiring classic upon which Taoism is based.
Attributed to the great Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu, the Tao Te Ching has attracted generations of followers from across the world to its simple tenets of modesty, peace, and realism. According to Lao-tzu, "If we are at peace with ourselves and the world around us, success will come unsought." Advocating poise, serenity, and complete assurance, Lao-tzu teaches men and women to work with nature rather than resist it.
The Tao Speaks offers the centuries-old wisdom of the Tao to modern readers searching for new ways to bring meaning to life. As with Tsai Chih Chung's previous books, the original Chinese notes are contained in the margins of each page as an aid to scholars and Chinese-speaking readers.
"Tsai Chih Chung's books are awe-inspiring. his line is elegant; his characters are sharply drawn; his humor is sly and appropriate; and his subject is profound. This is cartooning of the highest order." -- Larry Gonick, author of The Cartoon History Of The Universe, Volumes I and II.
Customer Reviews:
An entertaining book, and even instructional to the novice.......2006-07-12
This a comic book of the Tao Te Ching. When I first read it, I had not read the Tao Te Ching, and I found it informational and entertaining. Now that I have read the Tao Te Ching and scholarly commentary on Taoist thought, I find this book less useful for information, but I still think it is entertaining to reread.
MY introduction to Taoism and maybe Your's.......2004-07-12
I was introduced to Taoism from this book and I have moved on to learning so much more. It has persuaded me to learn Chinese history and learn about the origins of Taoism and the other connected religions such as Buddhism and Confucianism. I constantly use this book to introduce it to others. I actually need to purchase more books because they do not return them fast enough for me to introduce others to the philosophy. It was an excellent initial introduction, please give it a try.
Most approachable Introduction to the Dao.......2003-10-15
I have read the Tao Te Ching years ago, and found it mostly unintelligible and illogical. For years I have given up on trying to understand anything because it made little sense. That is, until I met this wonderful cartoon series by Zhizhong Cai. Here I found even some of the most complicated and esoteric principles of Taoism explained using brilliant flowing art and very simple examples from ordinary experience. For instance, to illustrate the Taoist principle of "firmness is not necessarily strength while weakness actually is strength", there is a panel showing water in flood surrounding mountains: "water is the most pliant of things, and yet it can erode away mountains and carve out canyons." After reading each of these panels, I get this click of recognition. I finally understand what the Tao is all about, and it makes a lot of sense.
The size of the book is very good. Nearly 100 pages containing roughly 6 panels per page is enough to leave my head reeling with ideas. The art is very beautiful and interesting. Further, the edition I have (which is square in shape) has a side panel on every page containing the text of the Tao Te Ching in Chinese (reading top to bottom the traditional way). I found that very interesting and adds an artistic touch to the volume. It is also useful to me since I am currently learning Chinese. Note that there is an older edition which omits this panel (so the book has a more rectangular aspect ratio). I believe the book title is different in the older edition ("The Sayings of Lao Zi").
if i am stranded in an island..........2003-08-22
and have to choose one book to be with, it's going to be this. i have many versions of the tao te ching but this one gave me the best understanding, besides the wen tzu (check it out). not only that this version is readable, it is also easy to understand without the use of the "big words". not only that, the illustrations also help to clarify the wisdom to the readers. they are fascinating, too. anyway, buy this book and don't be fooled when people pass this up as a kid's book (the drawings), it is the content of the book that is important and if you find this easy to understand the ways of a taoist sage, then i recommend this to buy it ^_^
teaches without teaching.......2002-10-27
I think it is fantastic that a book that is as enjoyable to read as the "Tao Te Ching" can be made even more so through the use of illustration and humor. Tsai Chic Chung has faithfully adopted the text and lessons of Taoism into this unassuming form ready to be enjoyed.
Attributed to the great Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu, the "Tao Te Ching" has attracted generations of followers from across the world to its simple tenets of modesty, peace, and pragmatism.
The most pleasant feature of this book is that it illustrates concepts clearly and cleanly. Complex issues are brought home and made familiar.

Steve Hofstetter, the mind behind Observational Humor, provides an uproariously funny look at everything college--from dating to dining halls to doing your own laundry.
Customer Reviews:
Wit.......2006-12-31
I bought this back in 2004 entering my final (fourth) year of college. I must say the observations are usually somewhat funny, but some were cringworthy (as were most of my college experiences.) I suggest giving this book to someone is high school before they pick a college, so they know what's up.
Spend your money elsewhere.......2005-08-17
Don't waste your time or money reading this book. You know those text books you bought freshman year that you only took one important line off of for every 3 pages you read...well this book has one funny line for every 3 pages. If you truly want something that will make you bust up go get Karo's book, either of them.
are you serious???.......2005-05-28
i was SHOCKED to see that not only did people read and review this book, but that they actually seemed to enjoy it. i received "Student Body Shots" as a graduation present...socks or any number of normally unwanted gifts would have been preferable to this piece of crap. In short, there is nothing funny about stating the blatantly obvious. Steve, tell your friends to stop writing reviews. The only reason I am giving this book one star is because there was no "zero star" option.
SO FUNNY!!!.......2004-10-26
OMG! This book is SO funny! I laughed so hard! You will laugh too! Unless you don't like to laugh! What kind of a monster are you?
Steve Hofstetter nailed it........2004-06-08
Most college humorists crack jokes about such tired subjects as the bad cafeteria food, small living spaces, and big classes. Funny, sure, but reading it is a lot like having a stand-up comedian joke about bad airline food and how he or she can't program their VCR.
In contrast, Steve Hofstetter nailed the college experience to a tee. Everything from classes and parents to hook-ups and parties are discussed in a hilarious (and slightly sarcastic) manner, with unbelievable, undeniable accuracy. Student Body Shots is a must-read for college students and anyone else who fondly remembers the experience.

This volume is a must for any diehard fan of "The Bold and the Beautiful", you will relive the early years of its conception, the wonderful story line creation, and you will learn how everything is put together from start to finish. You will get to know your favorite characters along with actor/actress that play them. This book is truly the best around about "The Bold and the Beautiful" and the High Life of the fashion industries favorite families "The Forrester's" and the "Spectra's". Enjoy peeking under the curtain and over the shoulders of the most brilliant people in daytime, again a must have for any fan of this wonderful daytime drama.
a must have for any fan.......2000-08-12
i feel any fan of the show should have this book. if you have been watching the show since the beginning you'll find it's nice to read on the characters or storylines you might have forgotten. if you haven't been watching since the beginning it's a nice history lesson about the show. it also has all the major fashion shows. what i like about it is it is divided in years and by the characters. so if you're looking for a particular storyline they are easy to find. but it is a great book for fans. it has a lot of nice stuff about the character, stars, and behind the scenes.

worth every cent I paid.......1999-04-05
I have only watched the Bold and the Beautiful since about 1996, that was when I learn't how to video record for when I was at work. This book is a wonderfully comprehensive guide to all things B&B. It starts from 1987, including how the cast were picked and hired. It begins with the Ridge/Caroline/Brooke triangle that leads to many intricately woven triangles. It has at the heart, the fashion industry with Eric and Stephanie Forrester, the owners of one fashion house. Their rivals are the Spectra's, lead by Sally with her daughter Macy and secretary Darla, working side by side with her. The love lives and rivalries of these 2 families are the main stories of this show. The book has beautiful colour photo's of the weddings, and behind the scenes happenings of various storylines are told at great length. For instance, did you know that the Rodney King racial riots broke out the same day as the Ridge and Taylor wedding? They couldn't wait to get home, they were really worried about their friends and family. Ridge and Taylor will always be my favourite couple, and their wedding photo's and bio's just make me love them more. At the very beginning of the book, it talks about the cast and crew and what they have done before. It shows the guest stars on the show, and even the different awards the stars have won in different years. The only flaw in the book is it is rather heavy, but is bound in a beautiful black cover. The cover has the photo's from the start of the show and will one day be a collectors item. It was written by Robert Waldron, who reports for our Australian magazine "TV Soap". He is an expert on a lot of TV Soaps and I hope he writes another one. All in all it was worth every cent I paid. 10 out of 10.

Greatissimo!.......1998-11-15
I managed to get the book at amazon although it was already out of print. It costed me a lot, but it was worth it. The B&B book is full of nice pics and many stories, also a detailed summary of what had happened from 87 to 96.

Quite interesting..........2005-10-10
I found the book very interesting. It includes detailed information regarding the history of the show.I especially liked, that it describes each and every storyline separately, that way you can't get confused.
The book also includes valuable info about the actors, memorable quotes, funny incidents, facts about them that are not known to many people. Also, there is plenty of info about the writers and the producers,it is magic to get to know what it takes to put a show together and keep it going.
I only wish there was more info about backstage stuff..beyond that, i enjoyed the book and i highly recommend it .
impressive.......2004-07-09
I had the opportunity of seeing a copy of the book in Ghana and i was amazed and very excited about it. I learnt more about the characters and the actors themselves. i think the book is excellent and i would not mind having a copy for my bookshelf

Sufficient.......2004-10-05
This book is sufficient to teach chess to a beginner. But why did the same author write the Ultimate Guide to Chess and keeps on writing more books that are supposed to do the same stuff? Probably retiteling them and slightly changing the format will get more books done and out there to make you more bucks! Smart guy when you run out of things to say.
As I said this book is sufficient to introduce you, but look at other books too.
Good strategic ideas for advanced beginners........2003-07-14
Before criticizing a book by Pandolfini, it's important to understand the intended audience. The majority of his books are meant for people who have played no more than a handful of chess games. That explains the many negative reviews he receives.
In contrast this book, one of Pandolfini's most advanced, is aimed at players around 1350-1450. Consisting of 50 articles culled from his old chess magazine column, it has some very useful explanation and illustration of the sort of strategic ideas that players of this strength seek, with a depth of analysis that is shallow enough for these players to follow without a board. (I'm about 1500, and this book is just a bit too simple for me. By the way, I was about 1200 at the start of the year, so I do know what I'm talking about when I suggest how beginners can improve.)
Personally, I'd skip the early sections. The "Fundamentals" are not fundamental; they're simple pieces of advice you've already heard. The part on "Openings" is somewhat esoteric compared with the rest of the book, although I loved what Pandolfini had to say about the Four Knights Game, that ubiquitous and boring closed game which beginners wander into blindly. And there are far better sources of information on "Tactics" than what you'll find here.
The true value of the book begins with the section on positional ideas. This is worth studying. Then continue to the end, through the sections on middlegame strategic concepts, endgame themes, and planning.
As for prerequisites, you'll need to be fairly adept at tactics and possess strategic knowledge at the level of Chernev's Logical Chess Move by Move.
It is evidently difficult to bridge the gap between simple aphorisms for beginners and the complex positional understanding of veteran club players, so I give this book 4 stars for a noteworthy effort.
Not bad for a general overview.......2001-10-02
This volume is a general overview of how to improve one's chess. It is not a primer for total beginners, but rather a compilation of Mr. Pandolfini's fifty best "ABCs of Chess" columns from Chess Life magazine up to 1986, the year this book was published.
To me, the best features of this book are the sections on openings, tactics, handling of the various pieces (i.e., the power each piece exudes), strategy, and a good introductory section on the closed game. I made good use of these principles and I believe that I'm a better player as a result. I'd thank Mr. Pandolfini personally if I could for sharing his knowledge. I can understand why he's America's most respected and perhaps best chess teacher.
But I have to dock this book one star for it's only scratching the surface of the endgame. Only one article from this book was devoted to this arguably most important phase. Mind you, it was just as informative as all the others. Still, even I thought Mr. Pandolfini could have done better here.
Still it's not a bad book. In fact, it's pretty good. I'd recommend it to semi-beginners who have gotten past the how-to-force-mate phase and want a good general overview of what awaits them in their chess studies.
Another good title like this one, that I recommend, is Jose Capablanca's "Chess Fundamentals," which gives a good foundation in studying the endgame. And for folks like Scott Williams, whose review of this book appears in this column: Don't be so negative. If you want to find out what a book is about, read the synopsis. And if you want a really good chess primer, I'd recommend Mr. Pandolfini's "Beginning Chess."
Pandolfini's best book.......1999-12-31
This is a compilation of his Chess Life columns and it's packed with useful information. Because it is a collection of short articles, it's a wide-ranging, readable discussion of many concepts: open vs. closed games, mating nets, using the right rook, etc. For the beginner to intermediate player, this book is a one-volume reference on playing better chess. Think of it as an excellent "second book" after you know the pieces, moves and notation.
false advertising.......1999-12-15
The ABC's huh......real nice. This book advertises that it is for players of all levels. That is 100% false. I know all the pieces...know all their moves, understand check and checkmate. In other words...I can play the game. Let's call that beginners level 1. So, I buy this book so I can learn some strategies. The book starts out using the new algebraic notation to describe moves and nowhere in the book does it explain what it means. Not even an appendix. The book is totally useless to me. Thanks Bruce....you got my money.
Book Description
A new thoroughly updated edition of a classic work to introduce a fresh generation of chess readers to the wonders of the chess problem. There is nothing like a good chess problem to show just how beautiful chess can be, and this book will bring this home to the reader with many of the best chess problems ever composed.
The book contains a clear intelligible definition of problem themes and the stories behind famous ideas. International Master of Chess Composition Rice will teach you all you need to know to become a wizard of chess composition, and explain why chess problems are both enjoyable and beneficial to your standard chess.
It is no coincidence that good solvers are often strong players, witness the British solving team, which includes such luminaries as GMs Mestel and Nunn. American Batsford, 352 pages.
Customer Reviews:
A masterpiece.......2005-12-22
The other reviews listed have properly situated this book in its proper context; I can add little to those comments.
I will simply say that this may be the best reference book on problems ever written. It's in the top 2 or 3, for sure. If you compose and/or solve problems, this book is a must on your bookshelf.
However, by its sheer breadth of coverage, it may put off a non-specialist chessplayer. There are more gentle introductions available in print, and I would recommend reading them first.
Chess Wizardry: The New ABC of Chess Problems.......2005-09-11
Highly recommended to anyone interested in Chess problems and puzzles, this latest edition of a classic (1996) book presents themes and terms in quasi-alphabetical order with examples. Written in clear and understandable language and using figurine-algebraic notation, the text reflects the author's vast experience in almost every area of problem composition. I am prevented from awarding a 5th star due an annoying publishing flaw - the over-inking of diagrams in the vicinity of page 300 (Problems for Solving) often prevents one from distinguishing a White piece from a Black one (especially difficult with the Queens). I returned my first copy, but reluctantly kept the second when it became apparent that either; 1)every print run suffered the same problem or 2)I got the exact same book back again (this time, used) and it was just meant to be.
Learner's bible for Chess Problem lovers.......2000-03-31

Do you want to take chess problems a bit more seriously than mere puzzles or brainteasers? Do you want to learn about various themes in chess problems with great examples? Do you want to understand the chess problem columns in various chess magazines? Do you want to REALY enjoy chess problems? Do you want to compose chess problems? Do you want to learn about selfmates, helpmates and fairy chess? If the answer to any of these questions is "Yes", this is the best book for you. The author, a well-known chess problem composer, has done an excellent work in discussing various themes and making chess problem solving a great pleasure.
