The Darkroom Bible.......2002-05-30
This book is an absolute must-have for the experienced printer who wants to step up to the next level. The wealth of information he provides, from technical to historical, is extremely interesting, albeit a bit dizzying at times. However, the book can be used as a reference as needed for information on specific chemicals, formulas, or resources for supplies and equipment. Of all the books that I have read on printing, this is the one that has been most useful.

Mr. Anchell has complied an excellent book for both people becoming interested in developing their own film and those who want to know more about the chemistry of photographic processing chemicals. There are sections on getting started building your own darkroom, previously tested formulae for developer, fixer, and other assorted solutions, and a full explanation of what each chemical does in the formulae if you want to create your own developer. I used this book as a reference in a college level photographic chemistry class and I found it invaluable.

There is nothing funnier than an fat, orange tabby cat with black stripes sleeping thirteen hours a day (or more), stuffing his face fat full of food, and getting stuck in a tree. When I read my morning paper, the first thing I go to is the comic section and read my daily Garfield strip. I own all 40 books of collections of Garfield strips from the last twenty five years. The animation in Garfield's first few years is a bit on the crude side but he was still funny nevertheless. It is weird seeing Garfield physically evolve until "Garfield Takes the Cake" and "Garfield Eats His Heart Out". I think Jim Davis really defined Garfield's appearance in the 5th and 6th books. Jim has yet to fail me with Garfield's antics. I love it when Jon puts Garfield on a diet or tries to go on a vacation without his lazy cat. Of course what is Garfield without a visit from Nermal, the world's cutest kitten? One of my personal favorite moments in the book is when Jon wakes up and is startled to see Garfield wearing his reading glasses. Another great moment is when Jon and Garfield visits Jon's parents on the farm, and Garfield falls into a pig waller and gets covered in mud. Garfield is hilarious when he makes some snide remark about his girlfriend Arlene's gap between her teeth. There is never a shortage of laughs in any Garfield book. Jim Davis never seems to fail me with his abilities to make me laugh through his famous fat cat.

Great collection of Ivins' earlier columns.......2005-05-07
I subscribe to The Progressive, so I read Ivins' current work monthly in that publication, as well as any time she appears in the paper. And actually, I have not been a huge fan. I have felt that she mainly repeats the center-left mantras of the day, and works somewhat over-hard to craft and maintain the image of folksy, curmudgeonly, old-guard Southern progressivism. But I found this collection of older columns for $1 in the clearance section of a used book store, and found it to exceed my expectations. These columns, mainly from the 70s and 80s, are rich in the kind of political commentary that is genuinely edifying. For me, they provide a window on a time that I am too young to remember well (or at all), and teach me about the continuity between the political climate of that time and today.
But more than that, Ivins knows Texas politics as intimately as anyone. If you are not from Texas, as I am not, you might think that you are not especially interested in the culture and history of the Texas legislature. Or you might think that one state legislature is pretty much the same as any other. But I think you'll be surprised at the degree to which Ivins' "Texas Leg" columns are both entertaining and insightful. She may beat some jokes into the ground sometimes, but this book belongs in the library of any connoisseur of political commentary.
A Conservative Speaks Out.......2005-03-11
It seems by looking at many of the other reviews, liberals or those who would identify themselves with such label like the book and conservatives despise it. I suspect that most of this seems to be based more on her OPINIONS than on her actual writing. The book is more a tragedy than a comic opera.
Let me say that many of the stories are funny. Yet Ivins really can't debate an issue at all. All she can do is a 'reverse Limbaugh' and call anybody and everybody who doesn't see things Molly's way as a 'doofus' or an 'idiot.' As an educated man, I've long thought that humor is good for the soul and in some cases Molly does this well. But the vast majority of the cases have Molly whining about rich people or corporations - never once stopping to think that if it wasn't for a rich person owning the paper as an investment, she wouldn't even have a job. When your only obvious talent is the ability to insult people, your occupation pool is limited. (Limbaugh insults people, too, and I find his 'everybody agree with me' world to be dangerous territory; however, he does actually interview and interact with the big-wigs).
I must praise this book, though, for the column on the tragic death of former Senator John Tower with his daughter in a 1991 plane crash. I felt moved by Ivins' commentary - the first time the movement I ever felt didn't not begin in my bowels upon reading her column.
So I give the book three stars. It is a good retrospective of Ivins' early career and reveals all the shortcomings save one - we did not know then that she had plagiarized a lot of material from a CONSERVATIVE writer named Florence King.
I'm guessing she had to go to a conservative - those she despises - to get material worthy of being read. Oh, well, Molly's in the paper today, so I gotta go...

Molly Ivins Can't Recycle That, Can She?.......2004-04-30
Apparently, she can. In addition to being one of America's most puerile, unfunny political pundits, Ms. Ivins is a prolific recycler of other people's works. But this should not affect her standing as a favorite amongst the drug-addled sixties retreads who read this stuff anyway.

A classic.......2004-01-08
Lalic's book is a masterpiece that shines among its computerized counterparts of these days. The book contains complete games of the highest level in the most important lines of the Grunfeld. I like Lalic's treatment of the exchange variations because of the organized presentation of the material... However, I did find that some dangerous lines (Thanks to my database, I found this) are not covered and need to be addressed by the reader (Not to worry, that happens a lot with openings books)
Still, Lalic's book is a shining jewel and I keep on coming back to it every time I have to prepare my opening. If you are serious about the Grunfeld this one is a must...

Superb openings work.......2003-06-13
The book, "The Grunfeld for the Attacking Player," by Bogdan Lalic, is a superb opening work in every way that I can think of. I am intermediate "club" type player, and decided to play the Grunfeld a few months ago. I already owned the excellent "Understanding the Grunfeld" by Rowson, but wished to supplement this with a more standard opening work as well. Looking up reviews of Lalic's work, I noticed that John Watson does not think very highly of it. In his review (all his reviews can be found at chesscenter.com), he noted the high production values, but complained that the book lacked theoretical originality, and that Lalic had not explored several lines that Watson thinks are important. Finally, I bought the book anyway, despite Watson's negative review, and I am very happy that I did. The book is beautiful. It contains 86 heavily annotated games, with a dense mix of variations and constant textual explanation. It is wonderfully produced and extremely well-written. Lalic himself says that the book is a labor of love (and that he personally typed in every move), and it shows. His annotations are constantly evaluating the position and the possibilities therein. Each time I play through a game, I am glued to it, and drawn in by the quality of the games and analysis. In short, I am using this book a lot more than Rowson's and I value it most highly. This experience has made apparent to me a key point about John Watson's chess reviews. Namely, his reviews of opening books often are aimed at the highest level of player, where theoretical originality and subtlety are what make a book stand out. I am not qualified to agree or disagree with Watson's reviews of theory, but I have realized that in many cases his critiques are of little or no relevance to the club player who is seeking to understand and learn an opening. Watson is a high level master, who writes openings books of great theoretical value. When he reviews books, he is applying his own high standards. Very few players in the chess-book-buying public will have any concern, however, for theoretical originality. I, for instance, am not interested in whether Lalic's book adequately explores a theoretical byway that had become important on move 15 of some Grunfeld line. Rather, I want to learn how to play the Grunfeld Defence. This book is teaching me that, and it has taught me the importance of putting chess book reviews in their proper light. Don't get me wrong, Watson's reviews are great, and they are important to me. It's just that they are not always aimed at me. This is not to say that I am not a good player, but that many theoretical distinctions that signify originality to Watson are completely over my head and irrelevant to me. What is important to me is that a book engages me, teaches me, illuminates me, and inspires me. Lalic's book on the Grunfeld succeeds in all these ways extremely well. I highly recommend it.

If your an attacking player, then grunfeld might be for you. A reoccuring theme in the book is playing for the win, and not on passive moves.

This book is a compilation of articles written for Realtor Magazine in the years between 2001 and 2004. The market has changes substantially, and additional information needs to be added. Otherwise, it's a good book for new brokers. Recomended.

This book takes all the snippets from Realtor Mag & website and condenses for you in easy to read practical advice. A good over view for the broker/owner/manager.
