I wish I had seen the exhibition of which this beautiful book is the catalogue. It must have been breathtaking. This is more than a catalogue, it is a reference book, beginning with an overview and four informative introductory essays. The Catalogue itself is divided into twelve specific areas/types of Tibetan Sacred Art. These cover not only the different representations of the Shakyamuni Buddha, Arhats, Boddhisattvas and others, but also the four Tibetan Buddhist Orders. The Illustations are very clear and many detailed illusrtrations and graphs help to explain the Thangaks and Mandalas. The text is very informative, and the book is also printed and bound well.... A truly wonderful gift.

Superb visuals and explanations of Tibetan art.......2000-03-31

This is one book you can judge by it's cover. It is fabulous. The photos of Tibetan paintings and statuary are simply beautiful. In some cases, such as a Tibetan thangka painting of Shakyamuni buddha's life, the whole painting is shown first, then close-up shots of other parts of the painting are shown for a more detailed view. Scenes from the painting are then explained. Anyone who has tried to decipher the meaning in a thangka, knows that without the help of experts, it is nearly impossible to capture the true story. Marylin Rhie and Robert Thurman help unlock the mysteries in a book with stunning photography, history and artful explanations. If you are interested in Tibetan iconography, a collector, buddhist or an art student--BUY IT, you'll love it!

Good Book on Production; Little behind on modern technology.......2006-03-05

I wanted a book that would help my amateur videography skills. I decided to go with the Videomaker Guide based on its original Amazon rating, and the history of Videomaker magazines.

I found a lot of useful information in the book that I'm just starting to use such as lighting, filters, sound, and shooting angles. I've already started to apply the information from the book into a music video and a short film. So far, the information has been a plus, and I've used the book for reference to expand my amateur knowledge.

A minor negative on the book was that some chapters (back-to-back) seemed to state the same message. Although they were written with different examples, the same points were expressed.

A major negative on the book is that most technology and software that was referred to are about 3+ years behind. I was thinking some chapters might be updated to reflect the future of DVD production and using updated software video editing programs. However, there were no updated chapters. Lucky for me, most of my current knowledge of video editing is with today's software programs and hardware.

I have not finished this book completely, but so far...so good. This book literally seems to cover every aspect of production. Whether you're fresh out of school or well established in the business, this is a great book to keep on hand.

This book is excellent and extremly helpful. It is a great introductin to digial video production. The book is comprised of many short articles that give you all the ins-and-outs production. I use this book in my digital video editing class, it's a great reference!

Excellent quick reference!.......2004-09-21

The book is divided into 70+ short articles which makes it very easy to read. One can quickly jump to a subject of his interest.. ranging from pre-production, lighting and sound, camera and directing techniques, desktop editing, etc. A lot of valuable tips and tricks provided.

There is a "sidebar" section in most every article where some real-life examples are given.

In terms of post-production, it is suitable for people using Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro.

Good reference book from a great magazine.......2004-06-29

I've been a fan and subscriber of Videomaker magazine for years and this book is an excellent compilation of recent articles and how-to's on all aspects of video production. I like that they have added information on DVD authoring to this edition, too. My only criticism is that it would be much better if it was illustrated in four color rather than black and white.

I have two of the One Big Happy books besides this one and plan to get the fourth. Ruthie is the funniest little girl. She reminds me of my nieces when they were little. The whole One Big Happy family make this cartoon a success. Rick has a hit with this cartoon family. I pick up the books and look at them over and over and there fresh and funny everytime. This book is as funny and entertaining as the other books. It is also nice to see how the cartoon strip started and has progressed.

Victorian irritations still apply to modern life........1999-12-22

This book was very interesting in that, although it was written nearly two hundred years ago, many of the miseries of living that are listed still occur. For example (from the chapter Miseries of the Table): "The moment in which you discover that you have taken a mouthful of fat, by mistake for a turnip." Or "Finding a human hair in your mouth, which, as you slowly draw it forth, seems to lengthen, ad infinitum." There are chapters on the miseries of Travelling, Social Life, Reading and Writing, and Fashionable Life. Readers who are aficionados of Victorian authors such as Dickens, Austen, Bulwer-Lytton, and Sir Walter Scott will appreciate the chapters on miseries of the Country, the Town, and Watering Places. In fact, many of the individual miseries reminded me of scenes from "The Pickwick Papers", such as "Sitting down alone in a large party upon a sofa which makes an equivocal noise."

This edition is a condensation of the 1807 two-volume expansion of the initial 1806 single volume. The original format was a series of conversations between Mr. Samuel Sensitive and Mr. Timothy Testy wherein they catalog, on a weekly basis, all the injuries, insults, and disappointments which have occurred since their last meeting. Ms. Lovric chose to edit out the conversation surrounding the miseries so they would stand out to the modern reader. While I appreciate having the nuggets extracted for me, I would like to enjoy for myself "...the grace and wit of the language, incongruously framing the vulgar and comical situations described, which is the great success of the original book...", as Ms. Lovric describes in her Editor's Note.

I have references to Beresford's original work in another tome in my personal library, and it indicates that Ms. Lovric wielded her blue pencil rather freely to be able to compress two volumes into sixty-five pages of a pocket-sized book. However, for those of us who cannot afford to purchase the originals, this will substitute.

I would sum up the work as the Cliff Notes version of an author who writes the sardonic observations of Mark Twain in the language of Charles Dickens.

(There is also a miniature ball and chain attached to the volume to act as a bookmark, which usage the object is singularly unfit for. This could be entered in the book itself under the chapter on "The Miseries of Reading and Writing" as "A book with a novelty cover or attachment, which proves to be more irritating than amusing.")

a lot of books of this time are stuffy and boring. but this is great. some of the miseries are out of date, but many are still with us. anyone who wants a good laff should read it.

..., this 692 page hardcover book is an outstanding value. Edited by one of America's foremost critics, Andrew Sarris, with contributions by renowned scholars such as Dudley Andrew, David Bordwell, and Douglas Gomery, the content is excellent. Less opinionated and more informative than similar works, it's the best reference work on directors I've seen. With over 200 entries, all major directors are included. I highly recommend it.

A major disappointment........1998-04-27

200 is far too few directors, and the selection is weighed towards current film-festival favorites.

The write-ups on each director are by a grab bag of critics and scholars. The occasional gem (i.e. Robin Wood on Anthony Mann) is found among gushing fan notes and dull career overviews. There is little critical perspective such as in the editor's 1968 THE AMERICAN CINEMA.

If you're managing a project outside of your cultural home country, this book is worthwhile reading, or at least skimming (as I did) to get ideas on how to work more effectively with your "foreign" partners. If nothing else, it'll remind you that for them, you're the foreign person. Also good to remember that even if you yourself immigrated, your cultural outlook is likely still from your country of birth, especially if you lived there through adulthood and first job.

The first half of the book covers different concepts (e.g. time, communication, life outlook) for a variety of countries. The second half is an encyclopedia of short chapters on different specific countries.

While being expert at working in another culture comes only with time, it's certainly worth reading parts of this book (the general chapters plus a specific country's chapter) before your first working meeting on a multi-cultural project.

Excellent.......2005-07-30

This is an excellent book. From its marketing, I thought that "When Cultures Collide: Managing Successfully Across Cultures" pertained specifically to dealing with people of different nationalities in the business place. And indeed, it is a most useful book for that purpose. However, I was struck by how much one could apply Lewis' analyses to other situations, for example, dealing with people of other nationalities on a social level. Indeed, I have many aquaintances, and some close friends, from diverse backgrounds, and this book sometimes occupies us for entire evenings, discussing our experiences with one another. The chapter on Hungarians I found particularly accurate, and entertaining. I believe that Lewis would have enjoyed hearing some of these discussions (and arguments). My point is: don't dismiss this book thinking it is a businessman's tool. It's a good read for anybody who encounters people of other nationalities and cultures, irrespective of the context.

Essential reading before working internationally.......2005-05-27

At times this book veers on being discriminatory, shallow, stereotypical and arbitrary. For instance, what has Mr Lewis got against the Finns to focus on them mercilessly? Is it really useful to paint these simple caricatures of whole nations, with all their diversity and increasing multi-ethnicity?

Well, in a word, Yes. Yes, if you are suddenly faced with having to do business with people from other nations. I cannot praise highly enough how this book, in both its current and previous editions, enabled me to come to terms with the challenges of working across cultural divides. It has come to my rescue on no end of occasions, helping me adapt my expectations and be open to differences. The style is light without being shallow, and it can be dipped into as easily as it can be read cover to cover.

And it was particularly useful when I suddenly found myself responsible for a department in Finland!

Richard Lewis is a speaker of 12 languages and herein lie some clues to his understanding of intercultural communication.His book avoids the complex academic distinctions seen elsewhere and concentrates on practical understanding of each nation's "collective programming". It has helped me to understand how to deal and work with people of other nations with much increased effectiveness. Lewis explains why there are differences, and how we should approach them, using many simple diagrams and patterns. A must for anyone interacting internationally, or indeed with different ethnic groups within their own country.
