Had to get this book for art class. I previously used the 6th edition for a class the semester before. It is the same book as the other edition except for some small changes. The publisher THOMSON WADSORTH obviously felt this was an improvement over the last book. NOT...... It is a $100.00 dollar piece of crap book. As soon as you open it up for the first time and apply even the slightest pressure to the pages the binding splits and cracks and all the pages start to fall out. It is not an isolated problem as this is the fourth book I have recieved and they all do the same thing. I have brought this issue up to the company and they deny and type of problems. I guess they feel they can rip off and take advantage of college students and no one will care. SHAME ON YOU THOMSOBN WADSWOTH... PS.. If I ever have another class where your I have to buy another book with your name on it I am going to refuse. Another fine example of corporate greed. I bet the books are made in China so that instead of making $95.00 profit per book you make $98.00 profit per book.

Top rate drawing text.......2002-02-08

I have two older versions of this book which was a required college text for a course a friend of mine taught. This is a thorough and up-to-date volume on the elements of drawing: line, shape, texture, value, gesture, shape, form, etc. What I like best about it is that it is illustrated with a wide array excellent contemporary and historical master drawings that make great examples when teaching a particular concept. I only wish it came with a companion volume of large prints or slides for teaching.
I have many books on drawing but this has the best visuals. Much better than many other drawing books are illustrated with only the author's drawings or perhaps a few Renaissance sketches and focus on only one small expect of good art: rendering representationally. This book brings gets to the heart of what makes good drawing is designed for professionals teaching at the college level but would probably make a good home study course for those without access to college courses.

I also liked the sequential exercises given and have used or adapted some for my own students. Covers a wide array of media from charcoal to pencil to pen and ink and colored pencil.

The book is a very precice book. there are many chapters covering many of the major subjects of art. My skill have improved a great deal from reviewing this book. The book is a very long piece but its worth the time if you need too, or want to improve your artistic skill in every which way.

Covers an amazing range of topics, completely, but briefly. Discusses hardware, artistic theory, lighting, software, settings, landscapes, portraits, and many more topics. The only weak area is in the use of software to manipulate photos, mainly because much more space would be needed. The photos are great and often help one understand the underlying principles. I found this book to be very helpful.

I was pleased to see that this excellent book has been updated. It's always been one of my favorites, with just the right mixture of technical detail and useful information.

Not the Bible of Photography... but helpfull.......2005-12-23

It is pretty basic, and does have a lot of information that doesn't really apply to what the book intends to.. As the computer information, viruses and stuff like it.

Also, if you are looking for a book that will teach you all the technical information about photography.. This is not the one.. It will go through the basics of photography but not with a lot of details... Airball on this one.
Lots of information about equipment, history and rules of "HOW TO"'s to take a good snapshoot.

There are other books in order to explain more about technical and principles of photography which this one does not cover pretty well.

This book is a good introduction to digital photography, and is complete and thorough at the beginning an intermediate level. The photos are great, and I felt I learned a lot from this book.

Wonderful Book.......2007-07-26

Hatfield has written a very good account of the formal qualities of the comic art form. He deals with the interaction between visual and textual elements in comics at a theoretical level not previously broached. His work shows how these qualities play out in comics creating narratives and meaning for their readers. Having delineated these qualities he then sets about a formal reading of specific works in chapters 3 to 5. In these chapters he addresses both the cultural context of alternative comics and their formal aspects. His central argument is that comics need to be reconsidered in socio-historical and aesthetic terms. While acknowledging comics lowbrow origins he points to the emergence of alternative comics and shows that they offer new ways of understanding fiction and readers' engagement in constructing meaning.

Given that Hatfield is arguing for a greater complexity to the comic art form than is popularly ascribed, and that this requires an interpretative language and theory, his work is direct. Theory of this sort often drifts into abstract language and complex abstractions. Hatfield avoids this pitfall grounding his work in description of comics. Hatfield also addresses broader issues than the simple formal aspects of these comics, or what might in other works be called their literary quality giving a broader context to his work.

A Great Book for those new to the Sicilian.......1998-08-26

The move 1...c5 in response to 1. e4 is baffling to beginners. It does nothing to aid the development of the minor pieces, fails to move out a center pawn and is often followed by even more non-developing pawn moves. Many must surely ask, "How is a defense that seems to flout all the opening priciples so often adopted by super-strong players?" They're right: Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Spassky, Tal and others have had the Sicilian figure prominently in their repertoires. Levy an O'Connell do an excellent job of outlining strategies for White and Black in this wide-ranging opening (As far as I can tell, only the c3 Sicilian and the odd gambits are ignored). For those rated 1400-1800, this is a good introduction to the opening. For "A" players, this will provide an excellent foundation for deeper research into the opening. Another fine effort from David Levy.* Highly recommended. (*Excepting his, An Opening Repertoire for the Attacking Player, co-authored with Raymond Keene, which is a clinker -- see my review under that title.)

A must for intermediate players who want to play 1...c5!.......1998-08-23

The Sicilian is a bizarre animal: 1...c5 opens no lines for Bishops, prepares no pieces for development and fails to place a center pawn into play. Yet it is Black's most formidable defense to 1. e4. The authors do an excellent job of explaining why and provide ideas for both White and Black in a variety of settings: The Maraczy Bind, Sheveningen, "Little Center", Dragon, ...e5 systems and closed formations are all covered. Only the Morra-Smith gambit (and other lesser gambits) and the c3 Sicilian have been left out. If you are a 1400-1800 player and want to get a handle on the Sicilian, this is the place to start.

I suppose if you're a really hard core Sicilian guy, and you like to see endless variations, this might be your book. I was looking for a book that was a lot more into strategy, and I think this lacks strategy. It's really nothing more than an annotated ECO or something. I wish it had sections based on common pawn skeletons and what each side's strategy was to continue. This book is more designed for somebody who wants to memorize a bunch of lines. Great! Then you get into a middle game and have no idea of a plan. Oh yeah, I think the organization of the book, for what it is, is pretty good.

No tax code just no non-sense explainations of what is and is not deductible. I am a tax preparer and I give these to all of my small business clients

Great addition to your library of books on biz deductions.......2004-11-12

This is a great book for starters. It shows each deduction with explanation. I still use it as a reference before calling my accountant. There is not much surprises as far as new deductions but this books is a great addition to your reference library.

Anyone who is self-employed should own 422 Tax Deductions to educate yourself about your possibilities.
