FASCINATING LOOK AT ART IN MUSIC.......2003-10-15
This valuable art and reference work contains a lengthy introduction by Dominy Hamilton exploring the history of vinyl record covers up to 1977 plus an appendix on how the job is done, from the design phase to the printing. It also includes short biographies on Storm Thorgerson, James Slattery, Roger Dean, Diana Korchien, Dominy Hamilton and Dave Howells.
The full colour reproductions of the record sleeves are divided into the following sections: 1. Jazz, 2. Psychedelia, 3. Recent Years (1967 - 1977), 4. Influence and Coincidence, 5. Miscellany - a section that includes examples of various packaging strategies, 6. Portfolios, which features the work of eight sleeve designers in the form of small individual portfolios and include Rick Griffin, John Kosh, John van Hamersveld, Pacific Eye and Ear, Rod Dyer, Hipgnosis, Roger Dean and John Pasche, and 7. Devices and Disguises, that deals with ingeneous alternatives from 1970 onwards and includes sleeves with extra flaps, covers imitating old singles, concert tickets, sleeves in the form of newspapers and covers with movable parts.
The index at the front of the book lists all the sleeve art inside, from Abba and Alice Cooper through Kansas and Three Dog Night to Neil Young, Frank Zappa and Zzebra. Some sleeves have a whole page for themselves, like Zappa's humorous Weasels Ripped My Flesh and Boz Scagg's Silk Degrees. My favorites, to list just a few, include Cheap Thrills by Big Brother And The Holding Company, Abraxas by Santana, Bowie's Pinups, Bowie's Aladdin Sane, Patti Smith's Horses, Lou Reed's Rock 'n Roll Animal, Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica and Joni Mitchell's Blue.
This Album Cover Album is a fascinating look at art in music up to 1977, and also a valuable research and history guide.
Me encantan los libros de arte discográfico de Roger Dean.......2000-01-24
Me gustaría saber dónde puedo conseguir libros del autor, tales como "The Flights of Icarus" o "Views". Gracias, y espero que se reimpriman pronto. Un saludo
Great to view great to learn.......1997-06-03
This book is a must. If you only like music or if you love the covers more than the music inside or if you are learning to design covers...Well, this book has it all. The covers are show by elements in commom, so you can judge by yourself about the criativity of the designers. Roger Deam is a famous artist well know by his covers and stages for the rock group Yes. But this does not interfere with the overall result. The guys did a fantastic job compiling all the covers in this book. There are rock covers, jazz covers, latim, dance, disco, and so on. All possible covers are there. Don't hesitate. Buy it now!

Book Description
The authors have gone to great lengths to provide extensive explanations of their techniques as well as the materials and equipment used. A tremendous amount of useful hints and tips are shown throughout the book with diagrams and charts to enhance the text.
The book moves from tonal reproduction-including the zone system-to fundamental print control that includes archival processing, to advanced print control which covers fine-tuning print exposure and contrast, split grade printing both basic and advanced, print flashing, paper reciprocity failure and toning. It then moves further into extensive negative control covering focus, exposure, the zone system, filters and unsharp masking. It has an extensive assignment section where compelling case studies with super illustrations are used and ends with darkroom equipment and tools, and many tips and tricks. Intended audience: This book is targeted at amateurs, semi-professionals and professional photographers, most of whom have at some time developed and printed their own images. This book takes readers on a journey that will transform their work into something special.

Simply the best B&W book in years.......2004-08-29
"Way Beyond Monochrome" is a very practical book for beginning and very advanced B&W photographers alike. Everything you always wanted to know about sensitometry is explained in a comprehensive and practical way. It contains a revolutionary but very applicable new approach to multigrade papers. Printing techniques are explained in every detail. And several appendixes and handy tools make it a book which will never leave your darkoom. Take a look at their webpages www.darkroomagic.com to read example chapters of the book, download darkroom tools, and look at authoritative reviews.
By the way, I dont have any relationship to the authors or the publisher whatsoever. But Way Beyond Monochrome is simply the best B&W book I've read in years.
No fluff in this book.......2004-02-26
I have been a photographer for nearly 30 years and I have accumulated a couple hundred books on photography. I recently bought "Way Beyond Monochrome" sight unseen because I have found previous magazine articles by Lambrecht and Woodhouse to be concise and well written and hoped that the book would be the same. I was not disappointed, the book lives up to that and much more as it is absolutely packed with extremely useful and practical information. There is a good balance between theory and practical applications. There is an entire section in the back of the book with useful graphs and tables many of which now hang on my darkroom wall for quick reference.
This is not just another general photography book as it is truly aimed at the advanced printer who already has more than the basic skill set. This book is not full of "FLUFF" it presents a good range of print making concepts and then provides sufficient information to enable them to be put into practice. The information not only allows you to improve future images but also alows you to rethink some previous prints.
This book makes no attempt at explaining the "ART" side of photography. However, there is no doubt that making you a better and more confident printer will make for stronger artistic expression. Easily makes my top 5 list for photography books.

Happily Ever After.......2006-10-02
For those of you new the the series, yes, the manga and anime known as "Wedding Peach" (WP) looks a lot like "Sailor Moon" (SM). Why? Well, not only is it a typical magical girl shoujo (such as "Magical Girl Pretty Sammy" and "Tokyo Mew Mew"), but the producers of Sailor Moon have actually worked on the series. I also find WP different in that it has a more focused storyline (saving love versus saving the whole universe), fewer magical warriors, and one singular body of evil. So, if you enjoy SM or like series but want something more digestable, I highly recommend WP.
As for the sixth volume, I admit, it was rushed. Nao Yazawa, the creator, admits it to being rushed. And frankly, I like her honesty. I do not see many manga writers that own-up to such things; at most, I see them tip-toe around the subject. (Of course, this could just be my experience; if you've read of others that have acted similarly, be thankful.) That being said, the storyline is wrapped up well with a mix of drama, action, and a fitting happily ever after.
Manga at its best.......2004-05-18
I really like this Manga. It has action romance, and surprises around every corner. I reccomend this to any Manga reader. I plan on getting all of the Wedding Peach books.
It's about time..........2004-04-22
This is the volume that actually jump starts the Wedding Peach plot. Before was a very long introduction and character establishment. Now that it has passed, volume three sends the Love Angels into understanding the history of the war they're fighting and comprehending how important their role is. Though the story doesn't become darker, it's a bit somber at times (especially in later volumes) which, I think, most will find refreshing.
Volume three is a reward for getting through the first two, and a nice passage into the final volumes that are definitely worth reading (especially if you've come this far).
Very Cute.......2004-03-31
I love Wedding Peach, and when I found out it was being published into the English language, I was pshyced! I've been into Wedding Peach for about three years, and I never thought it would make it to the USA, but it has. Anyways, this manga was pretty good. It is obvious that it wasn't translated from the original Japanese version, but from the German version because there seems to be german words in the backround scenes that are supposed to be sound effects...kind of strange. Other than that, its worth buying. I definately recomend!
Welcome to the Angel World..........2004-02-24

Very interesting.......2006-06-14
Well, I know the author very well myself. As for the book it was very interesting and different from anything I have ever read before. All I know is it keeps the readers attention, that is for certain. I think anyone should give the book a try and look at it from the authors point of view when reading the book.
The Loss of Innocence.......2006-02-02
I am here today to talk about something that effects us all, no not gravity, or even reapportionment, but rather a book that shall no doubt become the very standard by which immorality will soon be judged. First let me start by saying I know the author well, in fact quite well. We served together as co-workers at a movie theater for nearly 2 years, where he served as a projectionist and eventually head projectionist, that is your first clue right there into the very nature of this man. Over the past several years he has been writing some of the most sexist, racist, homophobic, malicious, and sadistic essays ever to be committed to the page. Now, after 2 years his depravity is being unleashed to an unsuspecting public. Now as a good personal friend of the author you would think it my duty to praise his efforts and applaud his success, but I will not be doing that. While I still consider the author a good friend of mine, I found myself losing more and more respect for him with each passing sentence. I am all for the sardonic arts and laughing at things society tells us not to, but any book that openly justifies the raping of 13 year-old girls or for that matter many recognized forms of child molestation is not something I can give my endorsement to. Though to my friend's credit he is the only author I know to have his clinical diagnosis of being narcissistic and anti-social to be printed on the back cover of the book. Unfortunately his psychologist threatened legal action against him if he used his name for the quote, so instead he remains anonymous.
If you are one of the sick types out there who sees this sort of filth as entertainment then by all means purchase your one-way ticket the sex offenders' registration line, or if you are like me and are looking for something with a tad more thickness to throw into your fire this winter then I also recommend it for you.
Positively Amazing.......2006-01-05
A fabulous mix of intellectual wisdom and humor that directly violates society's morals.
I love Jo3 Horak!.......2005-12-24
Everyone should read this awesome book! You will love it! Jo3 is such an awesome person!

Book Description
Fred Zinnemann, celebrated director of such classic films as High Noon, From Here to Eternity, and A Man for All Seasons, is studied here in a book-length work for the first time. Zinnemann's fifty-year career includes twenty-two feature films, which are characterized by an unshakable belief in human dignity, a preoccupation with moral and social issues, a warm and sympathetic treatment of character, and consummate technical artistry. In discussing such issues as the role of Zinnemann's documentary aesthetic throughout his career, the relationship between his life and his art, his use and construction of history, and the central importance of women characters in his films, The Films of Fred Zinnemann lends new perspectives to the work of a major filmmaker and makes a significant contribution to the study of American cinema.

Zinnemann Rediscovered...At Last.......2001-12-16
At last...a definitive book analyzing the films of Fred Zinnemann. All of the articles are good, but the article concerning The Nun's Story, Zinnemann's neglected masterpiece is brilliantly written by the editor, Mr. Nolletti. It is gratifying at last to see Zinnemann vindicated after falling out of favor and out of the conciousness of film critics. The Nun's Story, much honored in 1959, is now only a footnote in film history. Mr. Nolletti has detailed the greatness of this greatest of Zinnemann's films.

The most original& the weirdest Monster Manual on the market.......2000-07-14
For their third compendium release, the planescape team (directed by Monte Cook) decided to concentrate on monsters from the inner planes. The idea is a good one and the new monsters presented in this book are among the strangest players will ever come across. As for the older monsters, most of them taken from the original Monster Manuals they fit very well in the book and the new informations & drawings of them are excellent. The result make for a refreshing book that I definitly recomend to experienced players & Dm who are tired of the same old monsters and think they have seen it all. However if you are just starting a campaign or do not intend to adventure on the planes this book will only hold a marginal interest for your campaign.
Paraelementals, Quasielementals, Fundamentals.........2000-01-05
WOW! The best monstrous compendium(other than ravenloft) ever created! It has all the elementals one could ever want, including Ice, Ash, radiance, magma, ooze, and even Vacuum! An almost-Must-have for any party with a high level wizard with access to the conjuration/summoning school! The other animals in this book are also incredibly cool. also includedin the front and back of the book are guides to the way creatures react with each other, and harmless residents of the inner planes!
Simply incredible!.......1999-12-05
Wow!
All I can say is........WOW! This is the treasure trove of the unique, original, and inspiring creatures I have always longed for... The art is amazing, the text is well-written, the book is sturdy and very attractive, and the content is....... simply put, oustanding. This is a sort of book that you lift up and say " why haven't I heard of this earlier! " or " why haven't they released this a couple years ago! ". Every single creature is so original and unique, they fully deserve to have legends written about them. BUY THIS BOOK!
A must for all DMs.......1999-10-17
Just what I need. Finnally, that "Summon Planar Creature" spell can summon more than just Imps and Baatzu.
Planescape does a great job making monsters more than stats.......1999-08-13
This is a great addition to Planescape material. Finally, attention is given to the Inner planes. But it is much more than your typical "monsters by the numbers" treatment. There is lots of background and mood envoking text to make these creatures more than the sum of their hit dice. In fact, in some ways there is more new material about the inner planes themselves than in the Inner Planes supplument. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting detailed creatures of a more bizarre nature.

Book Description
This book develops an original theory of group and organizational behavior that cuts across disciplinary lines and illustrates the theory with empirical and historical studies of particular organizations. Applying economic analysis to the subjects of the political scientist, sociologist, and economist, Mr. Olson examines the extent to which the individuals that share a common interest find it in their individual interest to bear the costs of the organizational effort.
The theory shows that most organizations produce what the economist calls "public goods"--goods or services that are available to every member, whether or not he has borne any of the costs of providing them. Economists have long understood that defense, law and order were public goods that could not be marketed to individuals, and that taxation was necessary. They have not, however, taken account of the fact that private as well as governmental organizations produce public goods.
The services the labor union provides for the worker it represents, or the benefits a lobby obtains for the group it represents, are public goods: they automatically go to every individual in the group, whether or not he helped bear the costs. It follows that, just as governments require compulsory taxation, many large private organizations require special (and sometimes coercive) devices to obtain the resources they need.
This is not true of smaller organizations for, as this book shows, small and large organizations support themselves in entirely different ways. The theory indicates that, though small groups can act to further their interest much more easily than large ones, they will tend to devote too few resources to the satisfaction of their common interests, and that there is a surprising tendency for the "lesser" members of the small group to exploit the "greater" members by making them bear a disproportionate share of the burden of any group action.
All of the theory in the book is in Chapter 1; the remaining chapters contain empirical and historical evidence of the theory's relevance to labor unions, pressure groups, corporations, and Marxian class action.
Customer Reviews:
A Genuine Classic that Urgently Demands New Attention.......2007-08-07
I initially read Mancur Olson's The Logic of Collective Action over 30 years ago, and have found it to be a seminal work of economic scholarship that resonates over the decades. This masterpiece is in urgent need of new attention, especially as America confronts its role in a post September 11 society.
Olson's theory is deceptively simple: goods that are primarily public (everything from a town park to a cruise missile) suffer from a "free rider" problem, in that most of those who would benefit from their provision are not personally motivated to pay for them. Thus, collective action, undertaken through the political sphere, is needed to provide goods and services intended for the collective welfare.
"The Logic of Collective Action" is based on economic theory. Olson's theory recognizes that competitive markets are the best source of private goods, but draws an articulate and compelling case for the intervention of government to provide those goods and services that are beneficial for society, but which cannot be offered effectively through market mechanisms.
A re-reading of this concise and well-written volume is urgently needed in 2007 America. For close to three decades, the downsizing of government has been the dominant theme in U.S. political life. Some of this trimming may well have been appropriate, but events of recent years (September 11, the Katrina hurricane, the possibility of adverse climate change) suggest that collective action is needed to address the most pressing problems of our time.
Olson's gem of a book is a worthwhile place to start our national reconsideration of the logic of collective action.
The Logic of Collective Action.......2007-01-10
This is a fine new edition of a seminal work in modern economics and political theory. Olson, in this work, introduced the concept of collective action problems: that the costs imposed on individuals for actions beneficial to a group may be too great, and the rewards to them too small, to induce them to act on behalf of the group. The book is highly readable and extremely thought-provoking.
Insightful book.......2006-08-29
Although refuting Marx is hardly a challenge, the argument against Marx here deviates from the norm with a refreshing new perspective.
Just as psychology has gotten, of all places, its most practical insight from the FBI via John Douglas and Michael Stone, and just as physics gets its most fruitful insights from mathematics, politics appears to get its most fruitful insights from economics. That is the corollary of this book.
There is tacit reference to Arrow's theorem in this book. However, more significant is the insight about collective bargaining one gains here. In the area of labor law, understanding collective thinking can help predict outcomes and therefore aid legal judgment.
Somewhat dated, but still worth reading.......2004-10-10
This book does a good job of describing the effects of financial incentives on the ability of large and small groups to organize to promote their interests. But it doesn't try to analyze the effects of non-financial incentives such as the desire for a reputation for altruism.
One of the most striking features of this book is the worldview that it criticizes. Apparently when the book was written, it was respectable to believe that special interest group politics improved democracy. This book seems to have been one of the original reasons for the shift of opinions away from that view. But from today's perspective, Olson seems a bit naive in his optimism that large governments and labor unions will serve the public interest in spite of the problems that the book describes of small interest groups with concentrated interests being more effective at lobbying than large groups with diluted interests.
His clear reasoning on his main points is still not as widely understood as it should be. But the other two books of his that I've read are better (The Rise and Decline of Nations, and Power and Prosperity).
Logically indeed.......2004-04-06
In this influential work, Mancur Olson is dismissing the 'classical' group theories, as he calls them. Rational individuals will rarely contribute to a common (or collective in the economics-lingo) good, because their contribution will be insignificant and the good will be produced whether the individual provides the good or not. With his stringent logic, the late Olson reminds his readers that groups of all kinds consist of individuals, and that these individuals usually follow there own interest, which not necessarily correspond with the organization's.
The book's explanatory powers are tremendous. Why large groups very rarely if ever are able to organize, and at the same time why some small groups exercise extraordinary amounts of power is Olsons main point of interest. In the very interesting last chapter he describes which features an organization, be it a farmer union, a labor union, a profession lobby or a special interest group, must inhibit to attain members.
The best trait of the book (at least for this reviewing economist) is the persuasive logic with which the arguments are hammered home, and the instructive examples that are used to illustrate the point just made. One little objection should be Olson's (human) tendency to arrogance when he is most pleased with his own conclusions. However: still an excellent read, 40 years after it's first printing.
