Book Description

This collection of thoughts from artists and thinkers of the past and present has been lovingly gathered over many years in the personal journals of the artist Astrid Fitzgerald and reveals something of the mystery in which creativity finds its way from the energies of the cosmos into the imagination and faculties of the individual artist and eventually into the solitude of the studio and finally into a work of art.

From the reports of mystics to the observations of scientists, these passages have been arranged in this volume to provide brief glimpses into the recesses of artistic being, into the tentative formations in consciousness, the first glimmers of imagination, the distinctive faculties of the creative mind, and the tensions of artistic expression in the workshop and the creative life.

Fitzgerald's great contribution has been to gather into a meaningful collection the words of 2,500 years of genius as a resource and inspiration for all those who would break out of creative limitations and take a bold step into the future.

5 out of 5 stars A marvelous source book.......2005-12-03

This book is to the arts and the creative experience what Aldous Huxley's PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY was to philosophy and the mystical experience; a compendium of memorable quotes and reflections direct from creative people throughout history. A marvelous source book to keep somewhere close by for easy and frequent reference.

5 out of 5 stars A treasury of spiritual thoughts.......2001-11-06

Highly recommended. A wonderful source of quotations of spiritual wisdom from an international array of artists, philosphers, spiritual leaders, etc. I have returned to it again and again for refreshment and inspiration. Astrid Fitzgerald has provided us with a gift from the heart.
She is also a very fine artist (...).

5 out of 5 stars Elements of style for filmmakers.......2007-08-08

This is a handy little guide, that is deceptively simple and yet embodies a great deal of the wisdom accumulated over years of classical filmmaking. Basically what you can find here is a set of simple rules for what will "cut well" together. It avoids, wisely, addressing anything about the technology of editing which will change rapidly while the basic "grammar rules" of how to put together shots in ways that flow and convey simple meanings effortlessly will remain. It will be useful for cameramen and directors (and home video enthusiasts) as a guide in shooting elements that the editor will be able, later, to put together into a coherent story form. It will also serve for the beginning editor as a convenient distillation of the principles they should take into account in order to avoid jarring the audience and taking them out of the story. There are numerous ways in which the rules described here can be broken and have been broken to powerful effect throughout the history of cinema, but I think the author is right to suggest that in such cases the power of such effects rests upon the fact that the editor was well aware that he or she was breaking the rules and wanted the effect upon the audience that would result from the jarring or unsettling feeling of something not quite natural being done. This is not the only or ultimate guide to editing, just as Strunk and White's Elements of Style is not the ultimate guide to composing sentences. There is much that is left out of this guide, as the author's primary aim seems to have been to catalog simply but completely at least the uncontroversial and widely accepted principles of composing shots and editing them together. For alternatives and exceptions and when to use them and how to plan for them, you really would need to look elsewhere. For what it is, though, this book is well written and clear and well worth reading as a beginner and returning to for reminders even when it feels as though it has become old hat.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with this book.......2007-02-06

This little book is wonderful. It is crammed full of information, whith chapters about the fundamentals of video, including excellent descriptions of camera angles, framing and editing principles. It is formatted almost as a list of things you have to know, with the concepts on the left side, and very clear illustrations on the right. I can't think of another book that is so well suited for the beginning student of camera and editing. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars New edition?.......2006-05-14

This book is certainly useful to get a handle on blocking actors and editing patterns that go behond two actors and the 180' rule.

The diagrams however, as well as being sexist as mentioned in other reviews, have a variety of problems.

They are also 'busy', and visually 'noisy', often expressed in a criss-cross of lines.

The camera angles in the diagrams do not always relate clearly to what is shown in corresponding image of the 'shot'.

The diagrams are also marred by the male characters often looking very similar to each other: blonde hair, sunglasses, and a black jacket or t-shirt.

As a result, that when you are looking at a diagram of three characters, eight camera angles, and eight accompanying images, a good deal of time is wasted simply comprehending the graphic message.

The book has been invaluable to me. The illustrations however are a source of constant frustration. It could do with a revision and a new edition with a new set of diagrams.

3 out of 5 stars just above the median.......2006-03-07

Unfortunately, author Arijon uses illustrations that reinforce the sexual objectification of the female gender in film; thus, his approach to teaching in this regard is limited to the reproduction of one of mainstream cinema's worst deficiencies.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on film making.......2006-02-25

After 17 years in the entertainment business, I have, or have read just about every book on film making there is and this is by far the most comprehensive when it comes to explaining what a composed image means. It also explains how to shoot and compile sequences to create specific rhythms, moods and elicit desired emotions from your audience. This is hands-down the best book for Directors, Editors, and Cinematographers available.

5 out of 5 stars Sexist? Probably. Invaluable? Oh yeah........2005-04-19

I have to say that the illustrations are odd. A significant number have scantily-clad women and naked women but there are also illustrations of naked men. It's kinda bizarre but if you look on the illustrations as artist sketchings of the nude form and focus on the information being presented, it's an invaluable guide to camera motivation and how to tell a story in a way that engages the audience.

It's difficult to get this information from any source. Schools typically don't teach this stuff and I've never seen it presented to the depth available in this book. It's literally a linguistic guide to cinema, treating motion pictures as a language that the audience has learned from past movies, a language that's apparently innate within our brains. Aspiring filmmakers would be wise to absorb the principles in this book before spending a lot of time and money making movies.

The principles in this book explain how camera shots and editing help tell your story. How to compose your shot to show a character's reaction to another character's action. How to reveal story points to the audience at the right time. How to convey time, space and relationships between characters and objects. Great stuff!

1 out of 5 stars sexist guid in film language.......2004-07-30

It would good guid, even perfect for students in film, if almost all examples would not be given on a basis of nude female running around usually well-dressed male.

There are a ton of words in this CD-ROM. Even verbs like "kvetch"! I liked the organized fashion in which the verbs are presented; basically, a couple clicks can give you most any verb, the person and tense of it. So much better than all those thick verb books which take your hours to sort through.

          Book Description

Nurse Cherry Aimless’s first vacation from her hectic career in a big-city hospital takes her to visit her spinster Aunt Gertrude in thrilling San Francisco. Wistfully trading her starched white cap and dress for a bright yellow poplin frock with a flared skirt, young Cherry takes to the highway, never imagining the gay adventures that await her. Imagine her surprise to learn that Aunt Gertrude has been kidnapped! Armed only with the contents of her purse, and with the help of new chums Midge, Velma, and a dashing female police officer named Jackie, the plucky but innocent Cherry must save her aunt, find a gaggle of missing nuns, and stop an illegal land grab — all under the warm gaze of her hero, girl detective Nancy Clue. And when the queer caper has ended, will there be a chance for Nancy and Cherry?

Mabel Maney’s camp classic The Case of the Not-So-Nice Nurse has been beloved by readers since it was first published in 1993. This sparkling parody of 1950s girl adventure stories will make you laugh out loud and long for a lemon Jell-O mold. Golly, it’s a good time!

          5 out of 5 stars Laugh Until You're Gay.......2006-12-11

Here's what it would have been like if Carolyn Keene had written Nancy Drew stories set in a 1950's gay and lesbian world, where the all the unattractive people were far right heterosexual bigots and all the heroes were GLBT. Read this series of three hilarious books that match nurse Cherry Aimless with Nancy Clue, discovering mysteries in caves, convents and under the sheets, when you need to escape. The Hardy boys even make a flaming appearance in the third book. Funny, even if you haven't read the old series, but best if you have.

I LOVED the adventures of Nancy Clue and Cherry Aimless.

          3 out of 5 stars Lacks eroticism..........2006-03-28

I thought this was a very cute idea, writing a story about Nancy Drew... except that in this case Nancy is a lesbian! Sadly, it never really gets at all explicit. Mabel just doesn't know how to write fantasy erotica. There's one moment where the two women finally get together, but then it's the next morning and Nancy has left the building! No, I'm not asking for XXX porn, but maybe at least something R-rated? This is PG-13!

          4 out of 5 stars Holiday reading.......2003-09-08

Light-weight, no-thought-required fun. A better read than the Case of the Good-for-Nothing Girlfriend.

          3 out of 5 stars A Lite Read.......2000-02-08

If you're the type who typically knocks out a novel in a night or two then you'll probably enjoy this book. It's too silly to plod through if it generally takes you more time than that to get through a story though. I personally felt that the book would have been a lot better if the author had only alluded to the characters' sexuality by using inuendo and symbolism instead of coming right out and revealing almost all the characters to be queer. I think a tongue-in-cheek approach would have made for a much funnier parody of the 50s kids sleuth genre. I guess that by making all the characters openly gay in a story that's set in the fifties or early sixties the author was trying to make some point but I just didn't really get it I suppose. (Don't get me wrong. I'm all for being openly gay in real life but just not in this one particular story.) Another thing that I found mildly irksome was that it's supposed to be a "Nancy Clue Mystery". Yet the character of Nancy Clue doesn't come in until at least halfway through the book and is really only a supporting character. Finally, I think the author could also have benefitted by keeping the book about the same length as a real Nancy Drew mystery. At over 200 pages with moderately small print this book was just too long for its subject matter. However, I did find the book to be entertaining enough to possibly read future installments in the series.

              Book Description

This is the first English translation of Johann Friedrich Daube's Musical Dilettante: A Treatise on Composition (Vienna, 1773). Written as a practical, comprehensive guide for aristocratic dilettantes wishing to compose instrumental chamber music for their social entertainment, the treatise covers genres from duets to double fugues, and includes the earliest instruction in string quartets and idiomatic orchestration of symphonies. Daube's Musical Dilettante has long been overlooked due to his better-known Thorough-Bass in Three Chords (1756). Nevertheless, Musical Dilettante is the keystone of Daube's theoretical writing, and offers the most comprehensive view of galant composition available in a single volume. The signature of Musical Dilettante is its unique textural emphasis and Daube's examples sparkle with concertante interplay, conversational part-writing, and idiomatic instrumentation. The volume includes an introduction to Daube's life and theoretical works and a bibliography. It will be of interest to students and scholars as well as performers.

                Book Description

The true power of Feng Shui is known only to a few...

...too bad they all want you dead.

Bad guys are coming out of the woodwork to wage the secret war. Powerful eunuch sorcerers from ancient China. Modern-day conspiracy masterminds. Cyber-demonic scientists from the future.

They've almost won: Portals through time lay bare a secret history of our world, a history that changes like the breeze and can erase you without you even knowing it.

There's only one things standing between these monstrous powers and complete control of all of human history: you and your buddies.

                But you aren't just anyone.

You're secret warriors -- a group of butt-kicking, kung-fu fighting, spell-chucking, pistol-packing badasses. It's up to you to save the world, or die trying.

Feng Shui is the Hong Kong martial arts action-movie roleplaying game. It contains all of the rules necessary for play.

Feng Shui was originally published by Daedalus Entertainment in 1996, and Atlas Games is pleased to bring this best-selling game back into print. The Atlas Games edition features the same text as the original in a new format including new artwork, layout, and a hardcover binding.

5 out of 5 stars HK Fans, Rejoice!.......2006-12-15

The problem, at least for me, with most RPGs is "hyper-reality"; that is, they have statistics and rolls for everything, turning the gaming experience into a whole bunch of numbers juggling rather than a role-playing experience. This game, however is not one of them.

Up until "The Matrix" came out, Hong Kong action films remained the interest of only a few hardcore Western film fans. In these films, reality takes a backseat, if not thrown completely out of the car. Stories and action scenes are performed with virtually no restraint whatsoever, resulting in some truly eye-popping action sequences. But the action is not the only one to receve this shot of adrenaline. Stories receive the same treatment. Granted, the logical aspect has been thrown out the window, but the discuss very basic themes, like crime, family, honor, and loyalty, very basic issues that can appeal to everyone.

This game honors that ideal. Against a backdrop of a time-hopping "Secret War", players take on the roles of stereotypical roles found in Hong kong action films: the gold-hearted assassin, the cynical veteran cop, the grumpy old martial arts master, just to name a few.

Attributes are kept to a minimum, and there isn't one that determines how good you look. Skills encompass a large range of skills, so a character skilled in martial arts is also familiar with melee weapons, knows about martial arts styles, and has contacts in the martial arts world. Tired of trying to convert those copper pieces to gold? Here, you don't bother. You are either rich, a working stiff, or poor, able to afford what a person of your financial background could. Using up too much paper with all the information on your weapons, like length, weight, and range? Here, all you need to know is how much damage it is, its overall size, and how much ammo it can hold.

But the real meat of this game is its emphasis of style over action. Instead of saying, "I shoot my gun, let me roll the dice", players are encouraged to describe their actions as if they were seeing it on the screen, and if it is cool enough, the GM may award a bonus to your roll. Allow me to demonstrate: "Clutching my signature pearl-handled .45s in each hand, I make a slow-motion dive towards the bar. Just as I fall behind it, my .45s spit flame and the bullets leap towards the mook, hitting him in both his eyes, and he falls back into the giant aquarium, causing it to tip and spill its contents." See what I mean?

This is a game in which the session can be only as good as the players' contributions to it. Now some of the pressure is relieved on the GM from being the one trying to do everything.

If you are a gamer and a fan of Hong Kong action films, stop reading and pick this book up RIGHT NOW.

5 out of 5 stars Fun stuff! Especially good for newcomers........2005-10-05

This rules-lite game is focused on having fun, fun, fun! And its action-flick background makes it more appealing to non-gamers than other popular RPGs where you may have to spend substantial time explaining the setting and character races, classes, etc. Most people are familiar with typical action-movie settings, so that familiarity helps immensely in drawing players in. Feng Shui does have its own setting, but it's really an elaborate excuse to have all kinds of action-flick character types (like ancient sorcerors and futuristic cyborgs) coexist. A GM can easily come up with his own settings to suit his story. If it would work in an action B-movie, it'll work in Feng Shui!

Perhaps the most telling rule in Feng Shui is the one about Named and Unnamed Characters. Any NPC (aka GMC) who has a name is an important character with a full complement of stats. Any NPC without a name is a dime-a-dozen goon who, in most cases, will be knocked out with just ONE punch (or kick, shot, whatever). So in a typical combat, the PC party will mow through waves of Unnamed enemies, until an NPC with a Name enters, which is when the PCs go, "Ah, finally a worthy opponent. I'm all warmed up now. Let's fight!" Fun stuff.

Dice rolling is kept to a minimum, and emphasis is on imaginative, stylish storytelling (or fight choreographing), on both GM and players' parts. My only gripe is that I wish the book had some guidelines on creating a new character type, but there are plenty of character types included already, so a GM can either modify an existing one, or have a pretty good idea on how to create one from scratch without throwing the game balance off too much.

If you like realism in your games, then Feng Shui is not for you. But even so, I think a lot of gamers will find much to learn from Feng Shui's lighthearted approach to roleplaying.

                Highly recommended.

Herein lies a simple system for any High Action setting. The origional thought was to emulate the action of the Hong Kong Action Genre. But it's not a huge stretch to use the system for Star Wars, the Mummy, or any setting where Larger Than Life stunts and Over The Top special effects reign. There is, for the most part, ONE die-rolling mechanic for everything. You don't need to look at charts and figure numbers, you just need to throw some dice and keep going. You get bonuses for describing your actions as vividly as possible, and making them entertaining. (What we call the "Looks Cool!" bonus.) And remember, there are very few problems that cannot be solved by beating someone up. Unlike many games, the flashy combat is the focus, and the roleplay is that thing you do between fights. (YMMV)

4 out of 5 stars Feng Shui: "Fists of Fury" meets "The Matrix".......2000-04-02

This is a role-playing game for people who want to shed angst-ridden melodrama and sweeping tactical rules and go straight for the one-on-one action of a fast-paced action movie. With character concepts such as "Scrappy Kid", "Killer", and "Everyday Hero". This system puts an emphasis on style and action, where almost anything can be resolved with 2 six-sided dice. The book also provides an in-depth world to put the characters in, but it is easily altered to suit the GameMaster's desires. Many of the descriptions of skills and Schticks (essentially powers) are tongue-in-cheek, again putting emphasis on the genre.

Combat is made to be quick and furious, with almost everyone having the same basic attributes. Other than Bruisers, everyone has the same amount of damage that can be absorbed. An attack will have the character go into detail as to what he wants to do to the villain, then rolls. Success means that whatever he said just happened. Thus, where most games would say "I shoot the guy with the sword", Feng Shui would prefer "The hero brandishes his gleeming pistol and vaults over a counter while he fills the air with his hot vengeance." Again, an emphasis on style.

Feng Shui is a perfect game for the action of martial arts-movie lover. Instead of just watching your favorite hero fight evil, you can assume the role of title character and plunge headlong into the adventure that you always wanted, from the grimy streets of ChinaTown, to the forbidding Himilayas, to different places in time. Anything is possible, limited only by your imagination.

4 out of 5 stars This is a useful book.......2005-11-17

This book can be useful to any man or woman who already is, or wants to become, an effective, if not wise, leader of other people.

The book is well named; it is about self-knowledge as a prerequisite to effective leadership of others. It is written to be used, more than read and returned to a shelf. My copy is well-marked with notes and highlighting. If you're looking for a cleverly written and poetically worded book, this is not it. This sits between a textbook and an everyday quick reference guide.

While the authors are well-credentialed management scientists and consultants, they have not included a lot of data or pithy stories about the effective and ineffective leaders they have helped over the decades. There are plenty of charts and diagrams for the major subjects, however. Overall, they have written a useful overview of the emotional, psychological and behavioral inclinations and choices upon which we base our leadership decisions and actions - with tips on how to use the information.

Too many managers, business owners, executives and team leads, among others, focus on how to get more out of people with little or no meaningful consideration about what they're putting into the environment. To deeply understand others, one must understand oneself. To understand human motivation, one must be in deep rapport with what motivates oneself. To really "get" what it means to effectively lead others toward important outcomes, a leader must go beyond merely remembering what it was like to follow (though for many that would be a terrific start) and truly empathize with one's followers. All of that is only possible when one is truly in touch with oneself.

I think this book provides easy-to-grasp explanations of established assessment tools, such as the DISC model. It discusses the important differences between one's disposition, values, and persona. It describes and explores another model called TISC, which helps one understand the blend of self-focused and other-focused motivations. One's disposition and valuing point of view will substantially determine how one "shows up" as a leader. The book includes an overview of the Situational Leadership model, too.

In short, you have to understand this stuff if you want to be more than a super-manager who drives people to make the numbers. If you want to be the kind of leader who affects people in powerfully positive ways, and is effective in the everyday world, spend some time with The Leader Within.

I look at it this way; this isn't the only book on leadership to own. But, it will help if it's one of them.
