Book Description
The rise and fall of American Art Deco coincide neatly with the brief, but glorious, heyday of the Chase Brass & Copper Co.s Specialty division. Gleaming Chase housewares of chrome, brass, and copper brightened many homes during the Depression years of the 1930s, thanks to the talents of such leading industrial designers as Lurelle Guild, Walter Von Nessen, Russel Wright, and Harry Laylon. The Chase Era presents in full the companys first (1933) and final (1942) Specialties catalogs, illustrating the development of Deco design as represented by the Chase inventory. Also included are newly discovered pre-1933 Chase flyers, showing previously unseen Chase Specialties! Introductory comments focus on the whys and wherefores of Art Decos short reign, and the place of Chase in the Deco continuum. With a current price guide and full inventory information, The Chase Era truly provides the first and last words on Chase Specialties.

Fantastic Finale.......2001-04-21
In this concluding book in a series of four about the history and products of the Chase Copper and Brass Co., the authors present the first (1933) and last (1942) catalogs of Chase's consumer products...and a wonderful surprise. The catalog pictures are crisp and clear, and the contrast between the early and last product offerings can be easily compared. But the first publishing of a series of pre-1933 "flyers" that were Chase's first "catalog" make this a must-have reference for collectors. Nine new pieces are shown, and new, additional information is provided about several other items previously attributed to Chase. Definite 5 star kudos to the the authors, Don Johnson and Leslie Pena, for this wonderful resource.
The Final of Four on Chase.......2001-03-23
This book is the final of four outstanding books by these two accomplished authors. Any Chase collector or deco enthusiast should have them in their reference library. This book features reprints of original 1933 and 1942 Chase catalogs, factory information, and pre-1933 reprints of Chase Specialty flyers, some of which have never been published before. Pictures of newly discovered Chase products will be a great help to Chase collectors in identification of their wares. This book is a must for all those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship that came from the Chase factories. Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina should be commended for putting together this four part Chase reference set, this book being the final one of the four. Highly recommend!

The most boring art book ever.......2006-12-14
Term after term, definition after definition, that is how you read this book.
this is a damn good book.......2005-09-13
Although I've been involved with creating works of art all of my life, I wasn't able to call myself an artist until I started reading this book. There is so much knowledge within these pages, it is a must have for any potential artist or designer.
Informative, clear, and gripping.......2005-08-11
I bought this book for my "Art Appreciation" class in my second year of Graphic Design school, and I came out with appreciation for art and this book.
The 350 something pages are divided into chapters such as form, colour, texture and so on.. All of them are easy to read and extremely informative, best of all, it's full of pictures! Each page has almost a minimum of two images, making understanding and grasping the content extremely easy and enjoyable.
I loved the chapter Content & Style, as it delved into the art schools, explaining each school, the artists, the paintings etc
The book also has a cd that has info on colour, texture, line.. ( Art Fundementals!) with an interactive part that's fun to do, and was required by our Professor as homework.
I recommend this book to anyone, it's very important for studying art, but will also be a valuable book in any library or home.
Even after 10 years this book is still good........2005-04-24
I was fortunate enough to take an Art class in college that used the Seventh Edition of this text for the class. I still refer to it after about 10 years or so, and it's the only text for an "elective" that I still have after all of this time.
I use this text quite a bit in my photography work, since all of the elements (line, shape, value, etc) are as applicable to photography as it is to painting and other expressive forms.
I either own or have read through most other books on photographic composition, and none are as good as this book - consider it "classical training" if you want your work to move out of the "snapshooter" phase.
Excellent Book.......2003-06-06
I had to get this book for my Design class in college. Great book. We didn't go through the whole book, but I kept the book after the class was over because there is some practical information for the art student. There is a bunch of information that i can use to apply to my own artwork, as well as a history of some past art works used as examples. The photos are all in color and there is many of them.
This book is a great introduction, but it is a wealth of information. The reading is easy and doesn't bore me. I don't know about some people, but reading a text can be cumbersome, but not this book. I really do learn alot just from this book alone without a class.

HOOKED UP WITH A FREAK.......2005-03-20
10 years have passed since Alita started on the trail of the mad scientist Desty Nova, hoping to find her "father" Dr. Ido. In order to get some clues she is seeking out the leader of Barjack, a gang of bandits who rule the wasteland under the direction of Den, a giant Godzilla sized mecha. She has help in the form of her Tipharean operator, Lou Collins, a young lady who would be challenged in operating a can opener, much less overseeing our deadly Battle Angel. She's also reunited with Koyomi, last seen as an infant who had been adopted by Alita's friends years ago. She's a tough young girl now, and has come to the desert to meet her idol, Kaos, a rogue radio broadcaster with ties to Barjack, who just happens to see Alita as his long-lost love.
As always, the art in this, the sixth volume of Battle Angel Alita, is miles above most manga. The character of Alita has evolved beyond the infant/naivete and first love and loss. She has also grown out of the beserker fighter stage in which she forgot her problems through battle. In Angel of Chaos, she has come to the realization that she needs to use her powers to make the world a better place, and to help people. The problems I have with the story is the comic relief. I mean would you really put a bumbling klutz, Lou Collins, in charge of your most important agent. And the fact that Lou interacts with Alita through a super deformed hologram image who seems to be out the school of mini-cuteness doesn't help things.
All in all, highly recommended. The Battle Angel Alita series is also being reprinted in the standard manga size at a cheaper price. Also check out Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, a sequel manga series, or more correctly, an alternate retelling of the story.
"And Death hides the angels it makes".......2003-02-19
After the 'miracle' save in the previous volume, Alita is provided with a new operator on Tiphares. This young woman is Lou Collins (a Libra with type AB blood, for what that is worth). She is a bit idealistic, but her personality seems to mesh better with Alita's than the previous dour citizens she has had to deal with. Kishiro introduces a cute gimmick - a super-deformed monitor puppet of Alita on the Tiphares side and a way cool Lou Bike for Alita. This personalizes the relationship, and the reader will fall right into the change.
A sudden attack sends Alita to the southeast after Barjack and Desty Nova. En route, she wanders into another desert fight and rediscovers Fury the cyborg dog and Koyomi from 'Angel of Redemption. [As an aside, this dates the events of this volume at about 10 years after 'Redemption.' Alita was a long time in the rebuilding.] They join up to try to find Kaos, a musician an underground radio operator who only senses radio waves and can read the past of an object.
The finally of this volume is a series of turnabouts which leave the reader (as well as Alita and Lou) wondering which side, if any, is the right side. Certainly, Tiphares, which depends entirely on what can be taken from the surface dwellers, represents what is wrong with any government by an elite. However, the 'rebels' are not clearly delineated as the 'good guys' either. We are forced to question out own standards in a world where Alita, a cyborg, is the closest thing to human. Except, perhaps, Koyomi and Figure Four, but that still has to play out.
When this phase of Alita's story started in the previous volume, it seemed less engaging than the previous story arcs. Much of this has to do with writer Yukito Kishiro's painstaking blending of action story, political statement, and spiritual investigation. This is a difficult combination to balance, but with 'Angel of Chaos', things are well underway again. The stage is set for the approaching climax.
A good volume, but close to falling short!.......2002-01-08
As I learned from Yukito Kishiro's own website, Kishiro was pressed for time to finish "Battle Angel Alita". I think he started to hurry the story somewhere in volume seven, "Angel of Chaos". While it didn't fall short like the motorball volumes, it came close to doing so.
After the bizarre ending of "Angel of Death", Alita leaves her new boyfriend, Figure Four, promising to return. This does cause the reader to wonder whether Figure plays any major role at all in the story and whether "Angel of Death" served any purpose, but luckily it's not too big of a deal. Thankfully, the story does jump right on track with Alita's mission: finding Desty Nova, the man who indirectly killed Doc Ido and promised to rebuild him. We are also reunited with an old friend grown up, and some brand new characters that fit right into the story.
As always, Kishiro's art is top notch and his storytelling is superb, filled with love, hate, betrayal, and interesting plot twists. And, as always, squirmish amounts of blood and gore make this for mature readers only. But while the story is still good, volume seven runs into a few problems with its pacing. Sometimes the story moves too quickly, causing a reader to wonder what just happened. An example would be a man is about to kill someone when a metal dog appears to save her. The metal dog appears seemingly out of nowhere; he just arrives. But the pacing problems are most evident in the ending. I won't spoil it, but I will say it felt a little shorter than it could've been.
But to make up for the pacing problem is something rarely seen in the previous "Battle Angel Alita" volumes: humor. One of the new characters, Lou Collins, is a reinarnation of Shumira from volumes three, four, and five, but she is a lot more funny and interesting. We also get to see something else rarely found in "Battle Angel": chibi-Alita. I won't give anything away, but I will say it adds a lot to the humor already found in this volume.
All in all, "Angel of Chaos" does still manage to stay on the same level with the "good" volumes. Its pacing problems might frustrate some people, but the majority of readers will ignore then in favor of concentrating on Kishiro's beautiful story.
BEST JAPNESE COMIC.........1999-03-02
IT'S THE BEST I'VE EVER READ.. NOT AN OLD FASHION COMIC..
IT TALKS ABOUT LIFE, DEATH, KILLING, CRYING.. AND OUR INNER THOUGHTS.. LOVE, HATE...
GOTTA READ IT AT LEAST 50 TIMES!!
Trial by Fire.......1998-10-19
Strengthened with a new purpose and her love for Figure Four, Alita must first satisfy the wants of her masters before she can "take control of the rudder of her life." She is called upon to arrest the man who was responsible for her father's death, but to do so, she must go through the strongest brigand band in the badlands, the Barjack. On the way, she meets Koyomi, a face from the past, now with a story of her own, and a reinforcement to the thought that she can no longer just live for herself. Alita also meets Kaos, an extraordinary man with hopes too bright and clean to exist in this world. Kaos helplessly falls in love with Alita's strength and hardened virtue. Den, the leader of the Barjack, embodies all the wounds and anger that Alita has felt, and when she faces him, it is a true battle in every sense of the word

More of the Best from Bodet.......2002-12-04
What can you say about this guy. He is entertaining and fun and thats what you need on a long drive. This wont disappoint if you like this guy.
One of Bodett's best!!.......1999-01-22
Tom Bodett is a master storyteller. His character development is deep and thoughtful. While humor is the "bread and butter", he is at his very best when telling a poigiant tale. These often bring a tear to the eye. One feels especially close to his characters, all of whom ended up at "the End of the Road" in Alaska. His wonderful voice and the complementary piano music of Johnny B. make his End of the Road series of audiobooks classics. I have literally worn my cassette tapes out and have to buy new ones! I can hardly imagine anyone not thoroughly enjoying Bodett's work! Ben G.

Amazing vignettes about people who never were.......2007-07-17
This is a collection of stories about the people Tom Bodett met in Homer, AK, reimagined as The End Of the Road, AK. The characters are composites, fine, and the stories ae no doubt apocryphal; but you'll laugh and cry and wince and mourn and rejoice as these fine folk live this thing we call life.

Cute, light & breezy book .......2005-01-13
This book was fun to read but it could've been better if she hadn't spent so much time detailing the dozens of times she couldn't get an interview or speak with Hrithik Roshan. That was boring.
Lazy and unilluminating.......2004-09-04
Just read this book and was pretty disappointed. It's not all bad: The writing is breezy, though at times a bit overblown (her extended descriptions of Bombay as a beautiful woman, say). And there are some funny and illuminating moments in it (the teenager who has to lie down after watching Hrithik dance; the 45-year-old bank manager and mother who compares him to Jesus.) I also had no idea that Hrithik has TWO RIGHT THUMBS (literally, webbed together) but there they are in that magazine cover reproduced in the book.
But the big problem with the book is that HARDY DOESN'T TALK TO ANYONE IN THE BUSINESS except a handfull of people she runs across basically by accident. Sure, she can't get an interview with HR for more than a year but, you know, she gets his big-time-director dad on the phone right away -- why not ask HIM some questions? She relates each time she gets the brushoff trying to reach HR ("sorry, he is out of station") but doesn't think to start calling other people in the business? Surely at least a few would have talked to her. And couldn't she have come up with some better questions for HR? SHE HAD A YEAR TO COME UP WITH THEM!
So instead of interviews with real live film people and/or a decently rsearched history of Bollywood, we essentially get Justine wandering about randomly for 250 pages and chatting about Bollywood with whoever she happens to meet. Her favorite sources? The juice seller near her apartment and the gals at the beauty salon.
You can't have seriously liked this........2004-08-14
The journalist who wrote this book infused her own feelings and opinions into every word. Bollywood Boy is not an objective work, nor is the writer's voice interesting or accurate enough to allow her bias go unnoticed. She fell in love with her main character and selfishly and rather dully used everyone she came in contact with - including us, the readers - to get where she wanted to be. It would have been great if this book were really about Hrithik Roshan, or the Hindi film industry, or the Indian people. It was just about Justine's crush. The publisher obviously doesn't know the subject matter well enough to know that there is little substance here, but did he have to, to at least recognize bad, self-indulgent writing? The arena remains clear for someone else to actually write about Roshan.

A must read for anyone interested the Elvis phenomenon........1999-08-03
Popular Culture writer George Plasketes lays tracks through "the mystery terrain" of American culture since Elvis began his second career in 1977. This book is a must read for Elfans and Presley-phobes, as well as those with earnest interest or casual curiosity. Whether you think Elvis is king or kitsch or you are just wondering why E.P. has dominated the cultural landscape of the late 20th Century this book is for you. Cultural scholars and students will find the comprehensive bibliography, discography and filmography/videography priceless.
Book Description
Teaches how to create accurate and realistic scale aircraft from scratchbuilding to painting. Includes simple techniques for adding interior and exterior details, removing seams, applying decals, and weathering.
Customer Reviews:
You could not find better than this book in modeling area........2001-06-07
I only make 1/72 scaled mordern airplane model. I've refered this book much although it devoed to 1/48 scale.
Even you don't like aircraft modeling, It can help you to get an interest in the model aircraft.
I will order other modeling books written by Mr.Ashey.
Disappointed.......2001-04-28
This book looks very good for someone building plastic model airplanes. It is worthless for a scratch builder of balsa models (which I am).
great ideas and tips for all.......2000-01-23
Mr. Ashey seems to know what he's talking about. This book covers a wide range of topics centered around altering and adding detail to your models. Lots of techniques for begginers to advanced modelers with simple tips to create the effects you want. He sometimes uses tools that most of us don't have, and doesn't always explain their uses, (i.e. working w/ resin and superglue) but on the whole a Very informative book. I would suggest it for anyone who wants to get more out of their model than what comes in the box.
Hit and miss.......2000-01-06
This book is good if you're the kind of modeler who wants to buy a lot of after-market accessories for your kits. Also, the author builds 1/32 scale aircraft almost exclusively. Smaller scales are completely ignored. Keeping these things in mind, the book will certainly be useful to persons who are doing this type of kit building. If you just want to do the best you can with what comes in the box, then buy a Paul Boyer book.
a comprehensive plane modelling guide.......1999-12-02
I liked the good organization of the book: cockpit, engines, landing gear, wiring, how to remove and reattach kit parts, etc. Several good techniques are taught on the book.
On the negative side, the book tends to leave on the reader the sensation that lots of specialized tools are needed for the hobby, and I regret the constant references to specific comercial firms.
Book Description
Generation to Generation presents one of the first comprehensive overviews of family business as a specific organizational form. Focusing on the inevitable maturing of families and their firms over time, the authors reveal the dynamics and challenges family businesses face as they move through their life cycles. The book asks questions, such as: What is the difference between an entrepreneurial start-up and a family business, and how does one become the other? How does the meaning of the business to the family change as adults and children age? How do families move through generational changes in leadership, from anticipation to transfer, and then separation and retirement? This book is divided into three sections that present a multidimensional model of a family business. The authors use the model to explore the various stages in the family business life span and extract generalizable lessons about how family businesses should be organized.
Customer Reviews:
Great framework for family business.......2007-10-01
This book provides a great framework on family business. Started my career in a family business, I have my share of understanding on family business. Typically, there some mixed up on personal emotion and professionalism. By using the framework discussed in the book helps folks in family business to focus more on business, less on personal emotion.
A 'must-read' for the whole family !!.......2003-11-23
"Generation to Generation", published by Harvard Business School Press, is an attempt to model how family businesses work in essence. The authors' research include interesting vignettes and 'lessons-learned' from a variety of families; how they achieved their goals, how they resolved conflicts between family members etc. Since the topic of family business in academics is fairly new, this book can be considered as one of the best in its field.
Important topics (such as succession, development stages and inter & intragenerational issues) are covered in detail to enlighten the reader. Contrasting viewpoints are also included to make the reader think for his or herself.
In general, the book is fairly easy to read since it explains the modeling theory with examples from numerous enterprises.
I strongly recommend it all who are destined to work in the complex system called family business.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2002-04-02
Most businesses in the world today are owned by families, but only a small percentage of these companies will survive and grow into major corporations. The unique challenges posed by family ownership can undermine even the best-performing small business, as issues of control and succession permeate the generations. In Generation to Generation, the authors apply the simple premise that managing a family-owned business to a large extent means managing the family itself. To that end, they provide a rich compendium of research and strategic suggestions for those charged with making a family business work, including the consultants who guide them. We from getAbstract highly recommend this book for these applicable measures and methods, which will help the performance of both business and family.
A perfect blend of theory and practice!.......1999-09-17
The authors effectively present a theoretical, as well as practical model of family business dynamics, incorporating the complexities of development over time. This book is a must-read to gain a deep understanding of families in business from the key perspectives of familiy, business, and ownership. Their use of case examples effectively illustrate the practical application and relevance of theory. To sum it up, it's steak AND sizzle!
An excellent book for anyone interested in family businesses.......1999-08-14
I think this is one of the best books available on family businesses! I found it insightful and informative. I think anyone interested in the subject should read this book. I strongly disagree with the review that describes this book as "too theoretical." I found it immensly practical.
Book Description
Generation to Generation is a comprehensive guide to managing family business-from small entrepreneurial companies to multinational conglomerates. Drawing on the authors' work in hundreds of family firms, the book will help managers understand the special dynamics and challenges that family businesses face as they move through their life cycles. With lessons about how family business should be organized, how issues such as succession should be handled, and what role consultants can play in facilitating these challenging transitions, this book will be a touchstone for all managers-whether family members or not-who are involed in family firms.
