Book Description
A series of interconnected essays on love and courtship as themes in Dutch art, this study examines pictorial subjects and artists that have never been considered together: paintings and prints of "garden parties" by David Vinckboons and Esaias van de Velde, merry companies by Willem Buytewech, paintings of courting couples observing peasant festivities by Jan Miense Molenaer, two portraits by Frans Hals and two important landscape etchings by Rembrandt. Nevitt places these works in the context of the culture of love at the time, which manifested itself in the social practices of courtship and a variety of amatory texts.

Customer Reviews:
Gurus and other Species.......2005-11-30
Since there are a myriad of how to books on Adobe's Photoshop and its less intimitating sibling Elements 3.0, its no easy feat to pick the book that does the job for you, without ending up buying a whole library on just the one subject.
This book by Philip Andrews is a very thorough introduction to the workings and mastery of Photoshop Elements. I, for one wanted a book on the subject written by a photographer, not some techie or selfproclaimed Photoshop guru. That said, this book is aimed at photographers at all levels, but doesn't deal with the fundamentals of photography. So it is not an introduction to digital photograpy, but to editing, tweaking and enhancing your photographs once they are on your hard disk drive.
The appeal of this book is based on its attractive layout and visualizations, printed on a nice stock of paper. I am very happy with this book, but I would not have expected anything less from such a prestigious publisher in the fields of photography and cinematography. So by now, I can rightly proclaim myself a Photoshop guru, even though only in Elements (but I don't have to mention that).
Not much about Layers.......2005-11-27
I bought this book with hope of help with creating layers.....not much help. The book is in a good format and has lots of info....just not what I was looking for.
not for the ignorant!.......2005-08-13
This is a typical book written by experts for other experts. I'm sure many readers will be like me: amateurs who need help in some of the basic techniques for digital imaging. This book does not provide that.
I bought it basically to help with the use of layers to produce multiple images. In spite of reading and re-reading the relevant sections, I still have not managed to do just that. Perhaps it's me, but the fact that I have not succeeded suggests that the book fails in its primary object - to help the reader.
Not enough info on photo browser and related info.......2005-07-07
The author does a good job teaching Elements 3.0 using text and graphics.
In all, this book appears to be a good read for the first time Elements user. I have used Elements 1 and 2.
As a long time photographer, I have >8,000 digicam photos that I need to preserve, catalog, and search. From my casual reading here and there, the PSE3 seemed to fit my needs well. However, the book did not spend much time elaborating how a photographer would maintain his library, including backups, etc.
In short, if you are interested in learning how to touch up photos, this book is good. If you are more interested in maintaining your larger image collection, this book was light on the topic.
Best book out there will sound cliche but it is..........2005-05-23
First, I am surprised nobody wrote a review for this book up to now. I know there are so many books like this but anyone, who is looking for an easy to read book with a large coverage and printed not in the boring black and white but in full color, would not possibly miss this book.
I own Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and How to Do Everything with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0. When I bought Elements 3.0, I wanted to buy a good book to tell me how to do things with this version and I wanted something colored and easy to understand. I hate long and tiring b/w books that "tell" you all those complicated instructions instead of just showing them with a couple of well designed illustrations. I own by the way two digital cameras, Sony DSC-W1 and Canon D-SLR 20, both are the best cameras I ever owned.
When I went to the local Barnes and Noble, I probably reviewed 15 books on Elements 3.0 for hours and this book beat all the others by a landslide. I bought it on the spot without thinking twice.
I like it so much that I started reading the book from cover to cover, something I never did with a book like this. The instructions are clear; there are pictures and diagrams on every single page that make it so easy to understand what is being explained.
If you are looking for a book that will give you almost anything you will need to use Elements 3.0, buy this book and look no further. I am 100 per cent sure you will be satisfied with this purchase.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Asterix finds a foundling at his doorstop. Obelix of course thinks the Stork brought him. They make a minor mistake or too giving him a bottle that has some magic potion still in it.
It turns out the child is likely to be a highborn Roman, so they go touring and looking for the father. It takes the arrival of other royalty for them to learn the truth.
More Asterix silliness........2007-04-13
Albert Uderzo, Asterix and Son (Dargaud, 1985)
A bundle of joy appears mysteriously on Asterix's doorstep, and Asterix and Obelix set out to figure out whose he is and why he got dropped off with Asterix. Wagging tongues follow, of course, and the child's parentage turns out to be an even more convoluted question than originally thought. I've really been somewhat surprised by the all-Uderzo books; I expected I wouldn't like them nearly as much as the Goscinny books, but Uderzo seems to have kept the series going quite capably, at least at the beginning. I liked it just as much as most of the previous books. ***
Baby Asterix?.......2007-01-29
"Asterix and Son" is the 27th comic in the Asterix series, written and illustrated by Albert Udzero in 1983. It's a pretty good one, even if it is just set around the Gaulish village where Asterix lives.
Obelix is Asterix's friend, and even though he's old enough to have his own menhir business and grow his own moustache, still believes that babies come from the stork, and is even more convinced when Asterix finds a baby on his doorstep. The Romans seem very interested in the baby, including Brutus, Julius Caesar's friend...
Worth a look for fans. There's a lot of gags and character play, which is interesting since it was written by the illustrator, (both ways a good job, I thought).
Super addition to your comic collection........2003-05-03
For some one 48 and getting older, I thoroughly loved this one. Remarkable ending to the usual Asterix comic. Loved the character of Dogmatix the dog in this issue.
The mystery of the foundling.......2002-07-27
First published in French in 1983 as Le fils d'Astérix, and in English the same year.
Asterix and Obelix must deal with the strange phenomenon of a baby boy, dropped on Asterix' doorstep.
This is one particular challenge they have not dealt with before.
While we puzzle over the mystery of the baby's birth, the villainous, power-hungry, Brutus is hell-bent on getting his hands on the child, whatever it takes.
Meanwhile the cherub-like baby accidentally ingests some magic potion, which gives him super-human strength and a terror to whoever tries to interfere with him.
Not one of the best Asterix albums, but still worth adding to your collection.

Book Description
This classic collection of the Silver Age exploits of the JLAincludes JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #29-30, the classic "Crisis onEarth-Three" story that inspired the JLA: EARTH 2 hardcover.
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Justice League of America Archives, Vol. 4 (DC Archive Editions is 240 pages this time. The actual contents of this hardbacked beast are the issues numbered from 23-30 of Justice League of America. It also includes the covers from those issues, as well, as an added bonus. There are cover shots on the back of some things.
Classic tales of teamwork, friendship, and justice.......2007-03-21
I held off buying the DC Archive editions for years because of the hefty price. Then I bought a couple used and I saw that they are worth every penny. At least they are worth it if you grew up with these titles. It was amazing how many of these stories (and specific panels) that I personally remembered after nearly 50 years.
Volume three contains stories originally published in Justice League of America #23-30. The highlight of this fourth volume is the second Silver Age appearance of the Golden Age Justice Society of Earth Two- and the introduction of the Crime Syndicate of Earth Three.
These stories look better on the high-grade, glossy paper than they did when first printed- and much, much better than they look on old, yellow newsprint. The maroon leatherette covers (with the Justice League of America logo embossed in silver) are first rate- though I would never take the heavy, glossy jackets off of them.
Treat yourself to the age of true heroes.
DC out does themselves again.......2004-08-28
I cannot believe how much of history is being placed within the reach of the everyday comic book fan with these titles. These are the best that money can buy. But don't take my word for it, buy one and be one of the converts!
Book Description
Grace Kelly—whose cool, blond beauty defined the aloof sexiness of the classic Hitchcock heroine—left a lasting impression on Hollywood and the world. Although her career was brief, she lit up the screen in films like High Society, Rear Window, and The Country Girl
, for which she won an Oscar. She was not only a fine actress, great beauty, and icon of American style, but she was also a passionate philanthropist, known for her generosity and kindness. Published on the 25th anniversary of her death, Grace Kelly: A Life in Pictures is the definitive photographic portrait—160 images capturing the early years, film career, royal marriage, and private life of this remarkable woman.
Customer Reviews:
Buy it if you want to complete a collection.......2007-07-09
My wife is a Grace Kelly fan. I tend to buy her any book I come across about Princess Grace. I feel that this is a good book to add to a collection of Princess Grace books but it is not the definitive book on Grace Kelly.
This book is authorized by the Grimaldi family and as compared to other books it has the feel of prior restraint. The closeness with the family gives us pictures cannot be found in other books; however the text adds nothing to the life of the Princess. It feels that the authors had censored themselves. I was not looking for a tabloid account but perhaps a more realistic account would have been better.
A lot has been said about inaccurate facts, typographical errors, and editorial gaffes. I still believe despite all of its shortcomings that this is a book worth buying.
The definitive book about Grace Kelly.......2007-05-12
Best image selection, best layout, moving foreword by Prince Albert.
Beautiful book, though should have been edited with more care.......2007-02-28
This is a beautiful book. It begins with a brief (and fairly shallow) biography. The majority of the book features over 180 photographs from Grace Kelly's life, from infancy through to her funeral, in both colour and black and white, interspersed with quotations by or about Grace. The reproduction and layout of the photographs and the quality of the paper stock are both high and the result is a lovely coffee table book. Most of the photos are stunning and many are ones that I have not seen before.
Having said that, my impression was that the book had been compiled hastily and without care. Some quibbles:
- Some dates are incorrect. For example there is a photograph of
Princess Grace meeting John F Kennedy dated May 24, 1964 - which seems unlikely given that it was 6 months after his assassination! Elsewhere there are two photographs of the same event (Grace's arrival in Monaco for her wedding) one of which is dated April 12 1956 and the other April 14 1956.
- The photographs are not always displayed in chronological order. For example, midway through a number of photos from the height of her film career in the mid-fifties comes a shot of Her Serene Highness attending a party in 1977. I found this annoying and detrimental to the idea that we were following the span of her life - especially as the majority ARE chronologically arranged.
- While most of the photos are gorgeous, some appeared to have been chosen simply because they were previously unseen rather than because of any photographic merit - photographs that were out of focus or badly composed. Others were colour photographs reproduced in black and white, probably to sit better alongside other black and white images, but I would have preferred to see them as originally taken.
This is still a lovely book and would be a great gift for a Grace Kelly fan. It is just a shame that more care was not put into its compilation and it is for this reason that I give it only 3 stars.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautfully Assembled Look At Hollywood's Princess.......2005-08-20
Along with Ann-Margret, I firmly believe Grace Kelly is the most beautiful woman to ever grace the silver screen. As a kid, I had a huge crush on her, and was sad to learn she was dead (a scenario similar to The Who song "Pictures Of Lily", but that's a whole differnt story). YHowever, I was still transfixed at how beautiful she was, and I bought this book looking for great photos of her.
This book does not disappoint. The photos in this book paint a far more entetaining and accurate portrait of the life of this beautiful and talented woman who became a princess who devoted her life to charity. The photos in this book are breathtaking. It's sad to read this book, not only because you'll be reminded of her tragic death in 1982, but also because it you'll remember who elegant and classy Grace was, and then you'll remeber how trashy all the "beauties" of modern Hollywood are, and you'll be reminded of the steap decline the entertainment industry today. Even so, a defintite must have.
Wonderful tribute to America's princess!.......2004-12-08
There are far too few books available about Grace Kelly, but this is the cream of the crop. Not only is it bargain priced, it has over 120 high quality photos covering all aspects of her life, from her childhood to her tragic death. Despite her rather short film career, she'll always be remembered for her great performances in classics like "High Noon", "High Society", "Dial M for Murder", "Rear Window", "To Catch a Thief", and especially her oscar-winning role in "The Country Girl". Just when she was America's leading lady she threw her career away for a marriage to Prince Rainer of Monaco. Her charm, elegance, and incredible beauty captured the hearts of people all over the world. This book is a definite must-have for all her fans whose hearts are still captured!
A great book about a great lady.......2000-08-09
Lovely pictures and interesting text make this book well worth buying. It showcases Grace's life from early childhood to her untimely death.
A Thoughty Picture Book.......2000-01-09
Jenny Curtis' "Grace Kelly: A Life in Pictures" is a must for Grace fans. Lovely reproductions of some of Kelly's most enchanting photos fill the book. It is a pleasant addition to any collection, and it is exactly what it is entitled, a life in pictures...nothing more and yet, nothing less.
A gorgeous collection of memories........1999-12-14
I have admired Grace Kelly all my life and this is by far the most beautiful book about her. The pictures are all stunning, and truly depict what a glamourous and classy woman she was. There is not a great deal of information - or pictures - of Grace, and this compilation is simply wonderful to look at. Definately recommended for any fan.

Paul Hindemith never accepted the complete engagement with social issues suggested in the writings of Brecht, but he developed many of his ideas regarding the place of an artist in the thirties and forties, his music eventually gaining official disapproval. His strong opinions about musical composition make him a particularly interesting subject and this research guide will provide a complete bibliography of works to guide the scholar and student.

Book Description
Many sales experts focus on a cookie-cutter sales "strategy," encouraging reps to push the customer through a pre-planned sales process -- an approach that can drive customers away. With ProActive Selling, reps have a wide variety of flexible and effective selling tactics to choose from. This enables them to adapt and approach each sales call uniquely and keep the customer at the center of every sales presentation.
By learning to think like the customer, sales professionals will learn to shift their own focus from the selling process to the buying process, and how to use the right tool at the right time. Miller's 15 practical selling tools let sales professionals in any industry:
* double the number of calls returned from prospective customers * call high (where buying decisions are really made) and stay there * increase the effectiveness of in-person and telephone sales interactions * own the process and own the deal
Plus, they'll learn how to speak the right language to buyers at any level, get rid of the "maybes" in the sales funnel, and master the 7 Qualification Questions that keep their efforts focused on only the most worthwhile accounts.
Customer Reviews:
An Amazing Tool for Salespeople.......2007-06-21
Having reviewed and studied sales materials to include info products with ten thousand dollar price tags, I am astounded that the quality and conciseness of Miller's advice to salespeople can be had for eighteen bucks. The book does a great job of arming the salesperson with the knowledge he needs to have confidence selling right up to the CEO level.
Good but not new stuff.......2007-03-11
Having read Miller's Proactive Sales Management (which I thought was excellent) I was keen to read his ideas on selling.
I have to admit that I found this book had a lot less impact and many of the ideas have been put forward before by Bosworth, Rackham, Thull, Sandler and others. There's nothing wrong with the notion that you should see things from the prospect or customer point of view and that communication should be in their terms - or indeed that the process of selling should be controlled in an intelligent and proactive sense.
But I did find some of the concepts (such as 'buyers look back, salespeople look forwards') to be a potentially dangerous assumption in some industries, such as technology.
So, if you have not had much sales training or have not read many sales books don't let me spoil it for you. If you have, you may find yourself thinking you have heard the concepts before, but the words sounded different.
Welcome to Success.......2003-10-31
I gave a copy to everyone in my sales organization and we have discussed it as a team and individually, using Skip's knowledge as our "language"..."Sellers sell forwards, buyers buy backwards".... In the past two years since implementing this, 80% of my regional sales people have made the 'club' trip each year.
Single Best Sales Book!.......2003-09-03
I loved this book! As a sales professional now in sales management, I bought a copy for everyone on my team. It's a must read for new and veteran sales reps.
I especially appreciate the "tool" approach to selling. It let's me focus on the areas I know I need to improve my team's game. The author's use of stories and examples makes it very easy to implement the ideas presented.
I'd highly recommend it to anyone serious in furthering their own sales career.
A diamond in the rough!.......2003-08-16
Understanding the sales process is one that is explained in everyway, shape, and form.......however, ProActive Selling gives you another perspective - - the buyer's. This book shows me how buyers buy and allows me to remain 1 step ahead in the sales process, so to "pull" my customer rather than "push". How to start a meeting (30 second speech) and how to end a meeting (summarize, bridge, and pull) have been the cornerstone to my immediate success! Every tool is easy to understand and can be utilized in every sales situation, no matter if your entry level or a veteran salesperson.
