A COLORFUL CAMPY CATALOGUE.......2004-04-21
Whether you're a collector of miniature books or not, this 4" by 4" palm-size volume is both unique and fun. It's well constructed and offers a wealth of pictorial pleasures that can be appreciated again and again.
Batman, Robin, Batgirl, the Joker, the Riddler, and a roguish cast of characters leap across the 300 Batman covers held in this colorful campy catalogue.
First appearing in Detective Comics in 1939, Batman has been a comic hero for well over half a century. In this volume the second 25 years of covers are documentation of the changes that have taken place as the notorious caped figure captured the imaginations of television viewers and moviegoers with his relentless war on crime.
very interesting...very tiny........2000-08-03
I am a moderately new Batman memorabilia collector so I could not pass up the chance to not only view but own copies of the Batman covers for the first 25 years. This tome does deliver as far as that is concerned. One thing I did fail to notice (I blame myself for this) is the size of the book: 4 inches x 4.5 inches! Tiny folio means just that. The art is still colorful. It is easy to read all of the print. It also includes all of the Detective covers prior to the introduction of Batman (which was really cool). The covers run all the way to 1963 so this publication allows the "reader" the opportunity to appreciate the transition of Batman during his early years. There is a nice, informative intro by Joe Desris. All in all it is a very interesting collectors item. To bad it is so damn TINY!
Great item for any serious BatFan.......1999-09-24
An anthology book depicting more than 300 covers of Detective Comics issues. A great item and the size of the book is just perfect ! Having the opportunity to lay my eyes on all those covers was just an overwhelming feeling especially when you are a serious Bat-collector as I am...
This book shows covers from Detective 1 through 300........1999-08-09
This is a great addition to the collection of any Batman fan. This book provides large, clear images of the first 300 covers of Detective comics, many of which are copies from the famous Mile High collection. It is also great to be able to see those covers at a glance, without having to pull those comics out of my collection. I would like to thank Joe Desris for putting this book together, so that people can appreciate those truly beautiful covers.
What is inside the book........1999-05-12
This is a great book for beginning Batman fans. I am an obsessed Batman fan. This is the very actual book that got me to really like Batman. Just by looking at the covers you can actually learn a lot about Batman and his fantastic adventures. So if you want to find out about the "earlier" Batman, check this book out!

Customer Reviews:
Great Photoshop for Photographic Illustration.......2007-03-28
This book came too late. I was wrestling with a large billboard design and finally had it shipped to the printer when this book came in the mail. The book really helps one understand the power of dealing with many subjects. For me, the section about making low res images look high res made me think twice about my techniques and better informed for the next round.
This is a book that actually lives up to it's title. Creating motion from stillness, extending backgrounds, trap, were informative, but these are only subsections. The book runs the gamet, from dealing with the issue of professional photoretouchers to improvements on reality, creating new items, shadows, even a full section on colour and then on newsprint.
Definitly a book for the advanced user of photoshop and one that requires a full read through rather than the reference tool type. The information is deep and compact in a great layout. I would reserve this for the library or bathroom before opening up Photoshop. If you do any sort of retouching or deal with photos for advertising and print, this is a book to have.
Good for professionals and educators and people that love to mess about with photos.
5/5
Precise and well presented.......2006-11-27
Honiball has chosen a collection of useful advanced techniques to present that every serious Photoshop user should take the time to learn and add to their arsenal. Though definitely designed for the advanced user, anyone comfortable in Photoshop can appreciate and understand guides.
I did find the instructional guides to be written in a somewhat unfamiliar fashion when compared to most how-to books. Rather than exhaustive instructions outlining (both textually and with screen shots) every step required to get to your goal, the major highlights are presented in paragraph form, assuming you have some ability to know what is going on. There are ample and well-chosen screen shots to show the progress along the way, just skipping the unnecessary page fillers you find in titles targeting beginners.
Though I found most of the techniques and samples presented very practical, the real power is the underlying ability the reader picks up along the way. I particularly enjoyed the coverage on shadowing, including both the theory and application for different perspectives. A few of the pre-press techniques would be used by a fairly limited audience, but again this title brings to light some advanced and practical tools for business professionals.
If I were to summarize what you pick up from this title, it would be how to take original photos, then enhance and combine them into a stunning production. I highly recommend adding this book to your library if you fall in the intended audience. Though not a reference book you would pull out for how to use specific tools, this is a title I plan to re-read once a year or so as a great reminder on some great techniques.
Short and Sweet.......2006-09-15
As someone who is lucky enough to work with Adobe as a beta tester, and who has read through many a Photoshop book, I can recommend this title to anyone who is an amateur photographer or serious hobbyist (or even a graphic designer who is into photography and retouching). While it won't teach you everything, there are many valuable techniques to be found here.
Bear in mind what this book isn't. It is not a Photoshop reference, and by that I mean it's not the right book -for example- if you're unsure how layers work or how to use channels. It's not a way to understand and learn the tools for the first time, but rather a way to use those tools in the specific context of retouching images. IOW, it will teach you a better way to skin the cat. (note: I like cats, it's just an expression).
The examples used are mostly relevant to real world usage and they are easy to understand and follow. Probably this is not the best book for learning special effects or the kinds of compositing you might see in product advertisements where graphical elements are blended with photographic ones. There are gigantic books dedicated to stuff like that, and so if that's what you're after, better to use one of those.
But if you want to learn useful ways of touching up skin tones and faces, adding a mood to a photograph by manipulating tonality across the canvas, etc. This is a good place to start.
Excellent techniques for color and retouching.......2006-07-06
Great techinique and the tips that he book has for color balance. the photo retouch very clear.
An invaluable resource.......2006-06-29
Title: Commercial Photoshop Retouching in the Studio - A Guide to Professional Photo Retouching and Compositing
Author: Glenn Honiball
Publisher: O'Reilly
ISBN: 0-59-00849-X
Reviewer: Bruce Frank
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Whether you're a seasoned Photoshop pro or a casual user attempting to revitalize the family photo album (or somewhere in between), this book will be an invaluable resource. Beware, however, that there are no quick fixes to some of the more serious retouch challenges.
For example, Honiball states that the best option for sharpening image details in a particularly fuzzy image is to "painstakingly draw in paths around the troublesome area." Those of us who have been using Photoshop for a while have unfortunately discovered this phenomenon - it can frequently take hours to achieve a satisfactory result when attempting to enhance a problem image.
Taking, in effect, the opposite approach to Scott Kelby, whose shoot-from-the-hip writing and Photoshop-user style gets right to the point in rapid fashion, Honiball exhaustively details the steps it takes to achieve a specific effect or correction. Although at times didactic, he nevertheless creates a thorough and informative textbook, rather than the educational comic that Kelby or Russell Brown might offer (not that there's anything wrong with that!, to put Jerry Seinfeld's immortal words in a different context).
"Commercial Photoshop Retouching in the Studio" is illustrated throughout with well-chosen color screenshots, most of which are presented in cinematic fashion - a true step-by-step approach which is extremely effective. It's like watching a video you can pause or continue at the flip of a page.
If you need to know how to prepare artwork for a printer, retouch photos like a pro, or create photo-illustrations for the commercial marketplace, you can't do better than Glenn Honiball's book. However, when using this book to guide you through your own projects on a computer, I would advise keeping one hand on your mouse, and one on a Mocha Cappuccino Grande.

Overlooked .......2007-03-02
Back in the mid-90's, Marvel released this mini-series that was actually a pretty edgy book for having the Comics Code Approval stamped on the covers. The great Grant Morrison (New X-Men, JLA, Doom Patrol, Invisibles; you know the list) teamed up with a pre-fame Mark Millar (The Ultimates, Civil War) to tell this frenzied and surprisingly violent tale. Skrull Kill Krew revolves around a gang of inadvertantly super powered youths who go on a killing spree. Their targets: undercover alien Skrull agents in human disguise. Though it is far from the best material you'll ever come across from either writer, Skrull Kill Krew features enough popping ideas to make any fan of either writer happy. The dialogue may reek of the 90's, and the characterizations (particularly of Krew leader Ryder) may be a bit on the stale side, but there's enough good here to outweigh the bad. Steve Yeowell's pencil work isn't anything spectacular, but it's suitable enough. With appearances from Captain America, Nick Fury, and a Skrull-impersonating Fantastic Four, Skrull Kill Krew is an overlooked and nice and neat little treat.
I mean three stars in a good way........2007-01-09
It was a fun book, I liked it. I didn't LOVE-LOVE it, but I definently strongly liked it. Glad I read it. Neither the art nor the writer were disapointing.

Customer Reviews:
Very true.......2007-04-25
Very funny book. Every man that is in here I swear I have dated. Even down to the Psychologist. He was the biggest user. A bit raw and very jaded but hey that's what happens when you are used by one man after another. It's like they don't want partners or wives. I have been on all the dating sites until recently. I give up after 12 years of getting my hopes up. Most of the guys didn't even read my profile. Just looked at the picture and that was it. We had nothing in common and when I acutally agreed to go out with them, they seemed surprised that we were so opposite. DUH! that's what a profile is for stupid.
lousy book.......2006-07-03
Each chapter is a sketchy portrait of different men and the minute thing that was a deal-breaker for her: dirty fingernails, b.o., moved too fast, etc. She comes off as a perfectionist who's her own worst enemy, a bitter harpy.
The book is filled with amazingly bad errors. For instance, "visa versa", and the word "penal" instead of "penile". Were any editors or proofreaders involved at all? The author congratulates herself repeatedly for being highly intelligent, yet the book reads like a middle school girl's diary. The inane catchphrase "What's up with that?" occurs in almost every chapter. Also, she swears like a sailor on every page. All in all, a very dispiriting and humorless read.
"Dating" is great (the book, anyway).......2005-10-25
I just wanted to let you know that this is one of the best books I have ever read (and I read a lot). You are by turns funny, witty, savvy, and raunchy. I got a big kick out of your experiences, and yet felt the pain. Although I am only 30, I can relate to an awful lot of what you have gone through. This book is worth every penny and then some! I will recommend it to all my friends!!!
Dating Sucks.......2005-08-10
It had some humor, but was more of a bashing than I expected.
I'm Not Alone!.......2005-07-17
This book made me feel NORMAL...
Knowing that someone who looks like Hillary (beautiful!),
and is smart like she is, and talented too, and still
can't seem to find someone... all that made me feel better.
She's taken lemons and made lemonaide, laughing at
her predicament, and she made me laugh a lot too! Also,
she told what she's done about it, to make herself happy,
and I think it was good advice. It's like a self-help book
that's a comedy at the same time, and each chapter was
a little story within itself... I didn't want the book to end....
I kept wanting to read more stories... of more dates that sucked!
Book Description
Does this sound familiar?
A fluttering of butterflies comes when someone you spoke to for ten minutes at a party decides to call you two days later. You wonder if he'll look as good to you sober. You plan the wardrobe, spend more time at the gym. You buy a new shade of lipstick.
Finally, the big night is upon you. You go to the mirror to touch up your makeup and your prince arrives. You know this not because he has rung your doorbell, but because you hear the honking of his car outside. You look out the window and hear a voice: "It's nickel beer night at Hooter's. Let's party, baby!"
If so, you need the solace and comfort Joanne Kimes, a well-known expert on complaining, provides in Dating Sucks, such as:
The Directory of Duds
The Hell You Endure to Get a Free Meal
The Sexual Revulsion
Why Go Out When There's So Much Good on TV?
Dating Sucks is the indispensable resource you need to keep your dignity and sanity intact even as the hellfire of dating threatens to singe off your mascara. No matter how weary you are, its hilarity will carry you through-until the angels send Mr. Right!

Revoultionizing film theory.......2001-02-07
This book is a must read for anyone studying film. It completely challenges the eurocentric doctrine of the mainstream film industry. It takes Third Cinema to another level, with articles from film makers who are pioneering this work. Great references to films. Redefines film language in non-western and western terms. Important to understand that Hollywood is First Cinema, Independent film is Second Cinema and Third Cinema is completely outside of that, redefining the technology and aestetics.

Book Description
This book considers the idea of nature in the music of Anton Webern. It stands out from other studies because it explores the wider social and cultural dimensions of the music, as opposed to an often narrow, technical analysis. In doing so it offers an important case study for the way in which social ideas can be discussed in relation to apparently "abstract" modern music. Moreover, it does so in relation to musical details, not simply on the level of biography or cultural history.

An excellent guide to running a Crusades campaign.......2004-09-29
I just finished reading this reference last night. Wow! For one, the Crusades were a empty spot in my knowledge of the Middle Ages, and this book filled that in nicely. I knew that there were several Crusades, and that King Richard and Saladin played a part, but that was about it.
This work, without being burdensome, acts as a great primer to those events, and the players. When finished, you'll be ready to run an AD&D campaign in Outremer... the Crusader States in the Middle East. The guide details 3 levels of camapigns: Historical, Legendary, and Fantasy. You decide how realistic, or how cinematic to run your campaign.
The Crusades are a fine background for FRPG play, with medieval cultures mixing, trading, and fighting. Are you a Frank, fresh off the boat? Are you a second generation European living in Antioch, gone native? Are you a Saracen, trying to get these foreigners expelled from Muslim lands?
The guide doesn't flinch from the realities of brutal medieval warfare, and helps the DM deal with these issues. Both Frankish and Muslim culture and perspectives are addressed, as well as the situation for women. Several adventures and campaign seeds are introduced to get you started.

Sorry I bought it........2002-06-24
The backgroud information this gives about the crusades is not only no better (for a DMs use) than any history book from your local library, it is slanted in favor of a pro-muslim, pro feminist point of view.As far as actual game mechanics go there are no character/monster write-ups, no maps (none that you couldn't get from a history book), no (complete) scenarios, and worst of all, the author completely sidesteps the issue of opposing clerics in a monotheistic campaign. Clerics are treated in the most generic form possible. What a waste.
The best of the historical campaign sourcebooks.......2001-11-26
The best (and last) of the historical campaign sourcebooks for 2nd Edition AD&D. This settings allows you to be a psionicist. This book also allows you to import many of the Al-Qadim material. WIth this book you have TWO sides to choose from: the Europeans and the Muslims. Add to it a decent snapshot of the world at this time, and you are all set EXCEPT for updating this book to be made d20.
Book Description
A groundbreaking how-to resource that addresses the gap between having your customers' voices, and being able to translate their voices into tangible results. Readers will learn how to engage in a process of getting to know their customers and learning their point of view so they can responsibly take action based on their customers' preferences, align the organization around the new insight they have acquired, gain buy-in for the resulting initiatives, and make the outcome of the initiative more successful. Voices into Choices captures the right balance between being a step-by-step method and offering the theoretical framework to understanding and using customer voices.

Excellent Reference .......2006-02-28
I have used the Voice of the Customer and Concept Engineering processes for the past 7 years at both large and small companies and have continued to relly on this book. The process can be well adapted based on the scope of the project. The book is very cleary laid out and is an excellent reference. It is packed full of helpful tips and information. I recommend it to anyone wanting to proactively listen to their customers.
Practical, Self Explanatory and Impactful.......2002-08-27
This book captures a process we relied on heavily at McKinsey and Co. It is a step by step guide to helping project teams understand, interpret and act upon the customers' needs. This book is helpful to anyone running a project - whether it is an internal or external project. As the president of a large business, I am ready to buy this book for my entire staff. I would be thrilled if my employees ran projects in this manner and streamlined their communication with me. One of the most useful books I have read in the last five years and hopefully one that my staff will quickly adopt as their process they use to manage.
Customer Voices will change your business life - REALLLY!.......2000-02-13
As a Research Fellow with the Procter & Gamble I purchased over 200 copies of this to provide a training framework for our people in Product Development positions worldwide who have responsibilities for understanding, and more importantly effectively translating the consumer's desires into breakthrough products. This 'manual' demystifies this very human process in exciting -not boring- formats. The processes described are those that were once only understood by a limited number of professionals. Voices into Choices makes listening, gathering, digesting, and communicating consumer needs a fundamental new skill that can be learned and mastered by an infinite range of businesses, profit and non-profit.
I have used the skills learned to map needs for several new, global P&G products, and at the same time used it for my church long-range planning process. These are core skills that seem boundless; only limited by the imagination of the person who has learned them.
Although I have recently retired from P&G, it will stay as a primer that I will continue to use my consulting business.
A great handbook to get good decisions made in your company!.......1999-10-21
The principles used in this book are some of the most useful I have come across. In one book it allows teams to analyse a problem in a structured way, come up with solutions and make execution plans. All without the members of the teams killing in each other. The techniques allow people to do this because it is based on logic and fact instead of opinion.
Must reading to turn "Voices into Choices".......1999-10-12
The Voice of the Customer is an emerging discipline in global business today. "Voices into Choices" is one of the best text I have read on the subject of how to go about obtaining, analyzing and turning customer data into innovative solutions. The book is laid out in easy to follow chapters that takes you through a simple step by step process. Each chapter starts out with a one page summary of that particular step. Additionally this page is very useful to go back to as a review. At the end of each chapter is a checklist that enables you to make sure you are ready to move onto the next step. The book is conveniently wire bound to keep it open to the page you need. If you are interested in optimizing your customer research, this book is for you.
