Customer Reviews:
Medical ethic and a super hero surgeon.......2006-12-22
I have mixed feelings about the stories here. They tend to be a bit formulaic in that there tended to be a twist at the end, and I tended to see the twist coming a few pages ahead of time. I like them, but with that part of me that dreads the day I will be absorbed in sci-fis or murder mysteries and will know that I am truly in my dotage. As a smattering of plots, they weren't bad, but they weren't good either.
I don't think the point of this book is so much the stories, as it is about building Black Jack as a character with a past and a sidekick. As far as that goes, it unfolded well. We don't learn many facts about him, but we see him respond to ethical dilemmas and face the limits of human biology and what a surgeon can't do even if they are the greatest super hero surgeon in the world. On this level the book is really good.
A brilliant way to tackle issues in healthcare.......2006-11-05
BlackJack is a super fun series that uses a comic book super hero to address some come problems in healthcare settings. Blackjack a brilliant surgeon makes it his business to write the wrong seen in common hospital setting. He jumps in at the last second to save the day. He solves these issues using his super charged intellect and superior surgery skills. However I will warn you that some of the pictures are a bit graphic.
Another Great One from Tezuka.......2005-04-12
Black Jack: Two Fisted Surgeon is the tale of the world's greatest surgeon. The great Tezuka-himself a medical doctor prior to abandoning the scalpel for the pen-carves this premise into a thriller. Black Jack is thrown into all sorts of situations and zany plot twists that will keep you reading.
There are 9 short stories in this book. Terrorists take over a hospital, an epidemic is carried by dingoes in Australia, and Black Jack himself is operated on by a doctor who is profoundly jealous of his patient's superior skills. For those who grew up loving Kimba and the many well-known works by Tezuka, this will be a treat and a discovery.
Role and limit of medicine.......2005-03-24
It was completely enchanted to the technique of Mr. Tezuka who drew by concrete production of surgical operation an abstract theme like sadness of the mind which was not saved and emptiness to temporary extension of life whose mortality rate is absolutely 100%
Though it is a bytalk
it becomes prohibition of sale disposal by social conditions, and there are many stories of the uncollection in the book by author's intention, and the typical one includes "Seat of pleasure", "Money, Money and Money", "Wall", "Visited memories", "Phoenix", "Falling object", and "Plant man", etc. at that time.
For instance, the Robotome operation is a theme in "Seat of pleasure".
The Robotome operation was performed as a kind of the brain medical treatment for a certain period of time. This is the one to destroy the frontal lobe with throwing in of the most the wire from the eye socket.
Tezuka himself became the result of leaving the comment by saying that it had been drawn comparatively affirmatively back , saying that "No consideration passed".
Wonderful work.......2005-03-22
As for the Tezuka work, this work has inadvertently become feelings
said reading neatly until recently neither 'Phoenix' nor 'Buddha' at
the junior high school though it has read willingly why.
It was passing this time even if the one made an image might be seen
several times, reading, starting a short collection this work, and
having known untouched.
Why did it think that read through this book, and is interested in own
feelings.
Only respect where this work made mild is dark remains in the
impression in making to the image when reading and it is reluctant.
People who die noisily even if it does with a talented technology of
twenty-one and people whom might not be never saved even if surviving ¥¥
¥ There is an end that the impression is bad not to endure reading on
the inside, too.
Mortality rate..absolutely..life..longevity..extend..empty..save..mind..
sad..abstract..theme..surgery..operation..concrete..production..draw..
technique..complete..wait.
To read through whole volume turning around, time and energy were
fairly spent , saying that "I was a patient" and "I am twenty-one" by
the scene scene with the impact.
There is always an appearance of twenty-one confronted even so though
it is annoyed by a powerless feeling to the confrontation to the
limit as the life at the same time in such a scene fresh not to
endure reading.
It says to his of that appearance and the impression that cannot be
known is remembered.
Are not you because only this impression is the maximum feature of it
of this work?
The impression that this work gave became a chance to consider the
meaning directly though it might be heard that the role as the doctor
(science), the law person (standard), and the religionist (truth) was
often bases of all roles of the world.
Moreover, I think it to be might impression through the refracted
hero who demands an unreasonable reward and doesn't brandish an easy
sense of justice.
There was an interesting question "Isn't twenty-one an appearance of
Mr. Tezuka?" in the explanation.
Mr. Tezuka seems to be said, "After all, it might be a cartoon" even
if the work that scoops out the nature of humankind such as 'Phoenix'
and 'Buddha' is created having been making twenty-one as unlicensed
and there to be an interpretation of sarcasm to the torment of authori
tarianism and the preconception that contents put in order are not
accompanied.
I thought the idea of having made the hero project a silent criticism
to it expecting that the gap of the preconception of cartoon (low
valuation) that Doctor of Medicine (high appraisal) had written would
happen when he who had the title of Doctor of Medicine certainly put
out this work to the world to be interesting view.
Customer Reviews:
Delightfully insane.......1999-10-15
I once saw an interview with Joe Martin in which he described a cartoon he submits every year and can never get published. In the cartoon, a man is on a psychiatrist's couch, saying "Doctor, all my friends think I'm crazy". To which, the doctor replies, "Why don't you kill them?". Even without such a darkly hilarious cartoon as that, this book is packed with laughs. I'd recommend it to anyone who appreciates a little insanity in their humor.
Joe, who are you...?.......1999-05-13
Bought this one, bought the other one, and keep on looking in case he decides to put out another book. He has the material, I've read enough cartoons in the papers for at least one other book, so come on Joe. I'm waiting, along with a few other people who can't get enough of Weederman the wonder dog. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of slapstick mixed with the sanity of a slightly insane world.

In Bolivia, politics have always shaped art, particularly when it comes to film. This book presents Bolivia's most significant filmmakers largely in their own words.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for movie buffs and historians!.......2005-04-12
Dr Sanchez-H does a splendid job of documenting the influences inside and outside of Bolivia that shaped Bolivian film and culture. His work not only uses an analytical process but is highly creative as well. A "must read" for anyone interested in Latin American history, film, and politics. Two thumbs up!
pleasure.......2004-12-14
Wonderfull book. Both Jorge Ruiz, 'the Bolivian Bob Flaherty' and Jorge Sanjines, 'the Pearl of the Andes', have produced works that stand the test of time. They are real filmmakers, in heart and soul. And trough their works speaks deep passion for the lives lived in this remote area of the world. Did you know that documentarist Jorge Ruiz was the first one to come up with the idea for the story that eventually resulted in 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'?
And that the Jorge Sanjines picture that stars GERALDINE CHAPLIN, 'PARA RECIBIR EL CANTO DE LOS PÁJAROS' was photographed by the great Bolivian cinematographer Guillermo Ruiz? The son of Jorge!

Three unusual areas of film history at last receive their due. The Art and Politics of Bolivian Cinema, by Jose Sanchez-H. (Scarecrow Press, Lanham, Maryland) places this Latin American nation's films in a historical and sociological context, and features interviews with some of the leading directors, above all Sanjines.

Product Description
This collection includes both didactic compositions of J.S. Bach as well as easy arrangements of several of his most popular works. The book begins with easier arrangements and progresses in its level of difficulty. All pieces are played in first position. Most of the piano parts double the cello to aid in performance. Titles include: 'Bouree I' from French Overture; and other favorites.
Book Description
Former world champion Anatoly Karpov is a living legend, the winner of more tournaments than any other player in history. His opening analysis is absolutely definitive. In this indispensable resource for every serious player, he covers the main positional variations of the Caro Kann: the Classical System (1 e4 c6, 2 d4 d5, 3 Nc3) and the Advance Variation (3 e5). These lines may not be as fast and furious as the Panov Attack (the subject of another book in this series), but as Karpov shows, precision and good timing can give Black a successful defense and even a strategic advantage.
Customer Reviews:
CaroKann from the theoretical and practical expert........2007-02-04
For decades, A. Karpov has been the world leading expert and supporter (both in theoretical discusion and practical results) of this very solid defence. This book is focused in the sharp advance and gambit lines (ECO B10-B12) and accomplishes the task of pointing out the best continuations and ideas for both sides in a wonderful way. Either you like to defend the resourceful positions arising from this defence or to crack it, this book will help you to choose the best way to do it. The variations follow a prelation order helping the reader to identify them from bad or dubious to recommended ones.
Overall, an excellent book which surpasses the good old work from V. Kotronias on the same subject.
Good book BUT..........2006-11-11
This is a great book. This is not a repertory book but a reference book. I found every variation I was interested to learn. I would say that this book is for people +1900 and for seasoned Caro Kann players. This is not a good book for starting to play the Caro.
There is something I did not like about this book... it is very hard to follow the variations. You have to be patient to find your way thru pages and lots of variations and sub variations.
If you already play the Caro, you are +1900 and have a lot of time to follow thru hundreds of variations then this is the book for you.
If you want to learn to play the Caro and want to learn the structure and plans look somewhere else.
This one is exceptional.......2006-10-30
If John Watson and David Bronstein were to write one on the Caro Advance, this would be it, except it's Anatoly Karpov, and Mikhail Podgets, of wich the latter is probably responsible for the lucid, insightful, and highly entertaining prose comments. Jimmy Adams was the translator. Coverage is balanced and exceptionally comprehensive, presented in a tree style. There are detailed tree indexes for every chapter, but it lacks an index for the hundreds of embedded games, just giving listings for the dozen plus illustrative games added on at the end. That's about the only flaw I see. The volume assumes some acquaintance with the main variations, but is probably accesible to anyone who's gone through Starting Out: Caro Kann or something similar. Anyone from A or B class through GM should find it more than useful.
Advance Variation and Gambit System.......2006-10-19
I just recieved this book in the mail and wanted to throw out a quick review of the publishing job and some of the content. I really think this is how an opening book should be made. Very easy to read and follow, multiple indices, an average of about 2 diagrams per page for 260 pages. The prose is conversational and direct. This book looks to be an excellent resourse for both black and white players who want to enter these variations. About 230 of the 260 pages cover the Advance system. I eagerly await the next volume, and I don't even currently use the C-K defense. This looks to be one of the best opening books I've seen. Very clean, professional. Buy it if you are at all interested in the Caro-Kann.
Customer Reviews:
Professional: Well-Organized, Thoughtful Presentation.......2000-04-01
A strong example of how an opening guide should be written: strategies for both sides explained, main lines identified, model games annotated, and chapter summaries tying it all together. The author is an International Master and a journalist, so his knowledge is deep and articulately presented. The recommended main line for White is positional (4 Nf3 5 Be2 6 0-0) however move alternatives are explored in many different chapters. For me, the only drawback was my reluctance to study in-depth a variation I rarely get the chance to play since I prefer queen's pawn openings!

Book Description
Credit applications are a dime a dozen. Unfortunately, the easy access to credit has led many into deep debt without any idea on how to get out. Debt-Free Living has the solution. This updated bestseller now comes with the Snap-Shot God CD-ROM, a powerful tool that creates a customized plan to help anyone get out of debt.
Customer Reviews:
No practical information provided.......2007-03-26
I was recommended this book by a professional credit counselor. After reading the reviews below, I knew it had a heavilly Christian bias and was prepared for that. However, it is about 90% antecdotes about couples in financial trouble. And in each instance, the couples (and reportedly the author himself) are rescued by a financial miracle after accepting responsibility for their debts and praying. As nice as it would be to rely on that, I was looking for practical advice. It tells you to make a budget, but doesn't tell HOW to make and stick to a budget. There is absolutely nothing in here about how to actually get debt-free and stay that way.
Completely ignoring the heavy religious bias (there's no effort to hide it in the descriptions of the book) I can see one "pro" in this book...the narratives about couples in trouble are a bit hokey, but they do put a mirror up to readers who can see bits of their own habits in at least one of the couples. Facing the bad habits is a starting point. Go somewhere else for practical advice. I for one do not have time to wait for God to tell someone to pay off my student loans and offer me a free place to live!
Debt-Free Living.......2007-03-09
This book has changed my life! If you are a Christian, it is a must-read as it details what God's blessings will come if you follow His Biblical plan. Well-written and full of real-life examples. Also see companion Budget Workbook by Larry Burkett.
The truth about debt and credit. This book can help a lot of people!.......2006-08-09
This is a really good book concerning financial issues that face almost everyone.
Larry Burkett's easy-to-read advice is truly a blessing to the Christian community, and I highly recommend it. God does not want our lives to be financially unstable. The different couples in this book and the situations that they suffer through allow the reader to see how finances can spiral out of control.
The advice in this book is solid. It is not a get-out-of-debt-fast magic book. It is a book written by a man who understands the drastic changes in the way society sees debt. We have been bombarded with a "get it with credit if you can't afford it" attitude.
People who truly want to stop accumulating and accepting debt as just a fact of life now have a book to get them started on the road to financial freedom.
Stop the insanity of just paying off one loan with another loan, buy Burkett's book and get started on the road to financial happiness.
See ya next review!
Great Help!.......2006-08-07
This book is great! Spiritually focused help for everyone. Easy read and practical use. Strongly recommend!
Very profitable reading........2005-04-16
I really liked this book. It is a classic book for those who are interested in managing their finances according to Biblical principles, and for those who have landed themselves into debt. Larry Burkett teaches biblical principles of debt-management by telling stories... stories collected over years of counseling thousands of struggling individuals and couples. Some of the previous reviewers have said that these stories are just anecdotal scare-tactics, but the intriguing thing is that I see highly-educated people around me making the same "anecdotal" mistakes with their finances (and reaping the consequences). Americans (in general) have no clue how much house they can afford, etc. and regard debt as a necessary evil... or even as a good thing. This book helps you to see debt in a more balanced light, and is highly recommended to anyone who struggles in this area.
As you can see by some of the other reviews, if you're not a Christian, you'll probably get hung up on some of the biblical principles: such things like keeping your word even when it costs you money, family leadership principles, living within your means, and the husband-wife relationship. So if you're not a Christian, I would suggest taking a serious look at the Bible (by studying what it says) and then compare it to the principles in this book. I think you'll find that the Bible is reliable and timeless in its guidelines for finances just as it is for every other area of life.
