Book Description
In these fierce and lyrical essays, David Levi Strauss calls for an artand implicitly for an approach to art writingthat is passionately experiential, intellectually grounded, and politically fearless. He addresses the always conflicted relation between aesthetics and politics by concentrating on specific instancesfrom allopathic art to Desert Storm propaganda, from Columbus's legacy to Robert Smithson's prophesies, and from new art in post-Soviet Russia to public art in the United Statesand by focusing on the work of artists as various as Grünewald, Jean Genet, Cindy Sherman, Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol, Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Miéville, Carolee Schneemann, Andrei Monastyrsky, and Daniel Joseph Martinez.

Customer Reviews:
Big Disappointment.......2007-06-11
This book is suprisingly bad, considering that it's put out by Avid. I agree completely with the other reviewer who compared this book unfavorably with the Final Cut Pro books put out by Apple's Training Series. Those books have clear exercises and go through the processes you're learning in a thorough step-by-step way. This book doesn't even explain the interface clearly. Then, suddenly you are instructed to hit keys that have never been mentioned before. The writer doesn't even tell you what footage he's working with most of the time. A real disaster.
No-Nonsense Guide Delivers.......2006-09-13
Editing with Avid Xpress Pro and Avid Xpress DV is a terrific book for beginners and for intermediate editors as well. It doesn't waste time trying to interject "personality" into the text, it dives straight into teaching the Avid interface, buttons and basic editing techniques. It's organized well and can be used for quick reference, but it also contains exercises and short quizzes at the end of each chapter. The exercises contain real world footage that ranges from a PSA on the rainforest to an emergency room drama. The book gives you two ways to go through the exercises as well: 1. with detailed step-by-step instructions perfect for beginners or 2. with an outline of basic instructions that allows an intermediate editor to hone his/her skills when those step-by-steps plod you into a state of hypnosis.
It's a terrific guide with good sample footage and clear, concise explanations.
Average at Best.......2006-02-19
This book is put out by peachpit and frankly I'm surprised at the mediocre quality of it. I also purchased the Visual Quickbooks Xpress Pro book (also put out by Peachpit) and found it to be superior in every way but one. The single area in which the official Avid book stands out is the inclusion of a dvd of source material to be used in exercises. I consider this to be an absolute necessity when learning any complicated piece of software. However, the Avid book disappoints in its implementation. The Apple pro training series Final Cut Pro book incorporates the exercises directly into the chapters, meaning that you follow along as you learn. The Avid book on the other hand is laid out so that you read a chapter on how to do something, quiz yourself on your knowledge retention and then are provided an excersise section in which to practice what you have learned. Personally, I find it extremely difficult to read about a software interface without using it simultaneously. For this reason I greatly prefer Apple's layout. If this book didn't come with the DVD, I would have given it 2 stars.
Well written....very practical........2005-08-31
Few books are written by *educational* departments. Most software books are written by people who managed to land a book deal.
Avid's own books is focused on *how to make the software work*. Editing aethetics come from you...not this book.
When finished you'll know what's important - soup to nuts how the software works. You should also pick up the Intro effects and the color correcting book.
In other words, each book of the series goes into how to make the tool work - having consulted with editors, Avid presents the materials in a logical, concise method to learn how the software works in the most efficient manner.
Like an onion, in layers, the difficulty increases throughout each of their books.
Not a very good introduction.......2005-04-09
This is not a good introduction to Avid editing software. All sorts of important little details are left out of the explanations and examples, making a sophisticated interface fairly incomprehensible. I have begun the tutorial several times, and have not been able to go through even the "basic editing" sections.
I suggest looking elsewhere.
This is a great disappointment.

Book Description
Famous as a Japanese anime TV show, Crayon Shin-Chan follows the daily life of a five-year-old boy whose bodily functions, offensive comments, and outrageous behavior consistently annoy his parents and land him in hot water. A national phenomenon in Japan, this shocking and hilarious comic celebrates the terrible power of destruction and indecency wielded by toddlers everywhere!

The Fun of being Five and Japanese.......2006-11-15
The back cover says I quote: "...celebrates the terrible power of destruction and indicency wielded by toddlers everywhere". And it's true and so much FUN!
Each volume of this English translated manga by Comics One contains two stories in color and the rest are in black and white, or with "tones" used in Japan. You get to see what is the life of 5 year old Shinnosuke Nohara,Shinchan being the diminutive of his name in Japanese; he is rude, loud, makes the most innapropiate comments at the worst time, and isn't afraid of exposing his nude body and private parts for all to see. Shinchan is a free spirit in every sense of the word. The stories are very honest, very funny and sincere; and some even typical for the behavior of a 5 year old boy.
The author has included many elements of the typical middle class Japanese family and Japanese culture in his stories, but the translator has cleverly changed some details to appeal American audiences. In the first volumes all names are Japanese then are changed to American names in later issues.
Though Shinchan and his aprents remain eternally young (like the Simpsons) the stories do follow an order and sequence of events in the boy's life, but he is five years old forever, unlike the stories on other anime and manga where there is a beginning, middle and end and the charatcers grow, mature and die or move on, NOT here!
Both the manga and the anime series it inspired are very popular in Japan, and as I recently discovered also in Spain and Argentina. I highly recommend these comics to all who have had to deal with small children or would like to read something funny, cute and semi-obnoxious from Japan.
Shinchan is a real character you'll love him! I know I do!
Personally I cannot wait till the release of the anime in the US.
Shin Chan... Is the man........2006-08-31
Wow... Those books are hillarious. I found that they show the show on adult swim at 12:30 pm. The language is a little too much for younger viewers but the humor could cover all ages. I recommend the book for kids cause less language and more humor. Great book!
LOL XD!!.......2003-10-08
Shinchan was supposedly known as a 'kids' show in China. Well, every kid knew it.. Even I! (I was a kid at those times =s). Now I'm out of china very depressed about how noone dared transalate shinchan (Shao Xin is his chinese name). People thought it was banned due to kids picking it up and saying, "WHat The Heck!?". But finally I saw an ad with Shinchan in it. At first I thought it was 'too risque' but then my mom ordered all the books and I was instantly hooked. True, I was a fan in china, I had 1 japanese shinchan video, and suprisingly found one DVD shinchan set in a chinatown which I got also.(The set contains episodes almost same to some in the manga!) I long await the day someone will put the anime in english or at least list shinchan in a manga convention.
Shinchan is an important lesson showing all artists that you don't have to make your comic look all fancy to be addicting and crazy.
True, shinchan is pretty risque, but the outcome is totally crazy.
(Shinchan's chinese name means 'Little New'!) =)
Soooo Funny!.......2003-06-29
One day, I was at Borders looking around at the anime (which ive scarcely done since the 5th grade), when I discovered Shinchan...By the next day, I had gotten all 5 volumes! This is seriously the FUNNIEST book I have ever read! Ive read it over a ZILLION times now! Shinchan NEVER fails to raise my spirits! My only complaint is how poorly made the book(s) itself is...Already 5 pages have fallen out! Otherwise, I am VERY pleased with the whole thing! Its the only anime I ever read now! As for him being the Bart Simpson of Japan?!?! Well...I wouldint exactly say that...hes done ALOT more worse things than any Simpson ever has! Also, the author really seems to understand about how kindergardeners think and behave...Shinchan seems so real! As for the artwork...I wouldint say it's BAD (you should see the CARTOON!), but really basic...Overall, I denfinetly reccomend this!
You average 5 year old hell raiser........2002-12-21
This book was hilarious. Follow the life of 5 year old kindergartener Shinchan Nohara as he causes all sorts of trouble for his parents.
If you didn't already know this is a Japanese comic (manga). Although it's not drawn very well, the humor makes up for it.
For a 5 year old Shinchan is smart at times but dumbfound at others. He already knows pickup lines, uses children books to hide porn at the bookstore and outsmarts his mother. Other times he goes home to ask his mother their phone number so that he can tell the grocery lady so she can call his mother and ask how much ground beef she needs.
Although the book suggests it should be okay for 13 year olds and up, I still thought it had some adult themes to it (from an American point of view anyways. They see things differently in Japan). My only complaint is that the book is read from left to right. The original Japanese version would be the opposite, since that's how they read.
Definitely worth picking up.

Book Description
Synopsis
The Rough Guide to Comedy Movies uncovers cinema's funniest and most varied genre, from silent slapstick, to 90s gross-out and the dark indie humour of today. The canon of fifty greatest funnies runs from The Gold Rush and Duck Soup to Airplane and Shaun of the Dead, plus double-acts, drag-acts and ensembles from Laurel & Hardy and the Marx Bros, to the Pythons and the Coen Brothers. Seeking out the films that have amused people the most - or simply amused the most people - the Rough Guide gives you the ultimate lowdown on laughter in the movies from Wes Anderson's Rushmore to Withnail and I, and from John Belushi to Billy Wilder.
Customer Reviews:
Decent (if not very objective) reference.......2006-10-02
I suppose an argument can be made for other genres as well, but I've always thought the comedy film doesn't get the respect it deserves. For examples, when they're handing out Oscars, comedies rarely get Best Picture; the last one to win was Shakespeare in Love, and even that was an atypical comedy because it was also a period piece. I think the last straight comedy to win was Annie Hall nearly three decades ago. This is in spite of the fact that comedy is often tougher to do than drama; after all, when a dramatic moment doesn't work, it may not even be noticed, but when humor fails, it is not only evident but almost painful to watch.
The Rough Guide to Comedy Movies is a passable reference book on the comedies that succeeded and a few that didn't do quite as well. As with the other "Rough" movie guides, it is broken into certain sections: a history of film comedies, the "canon" of the 50 great comedies, a look at certain icons of the field, a discussion of international comedies and a guide to other sources of information.
Of course, a book like this is largely a matter of opinion, so one should not consider this a completely objective source. No where is this more evident than author Bob McCabe's choice of the canon. While certain choices are ones that would make most lists, like Airplane, Blazing Saddles or Some Like It Hot, others are a little more dubious. For example, I enjoyed Dodgeball and Shaun of the Dead, but I don't know if they are among the top 50 of all time.
While the opinions in this book will differ from yours (or mine), they do provoke a deeper look at genre. In addition to the canon films, there are many other films referenced, usually favorably, so this book can offer a lot of ideas for movies to watch. As stated before, as a reference source, this book is merely passable, but it is a good introduction that can point you to a few good movies and some better sources of information.
An Enjoyable Read .......2006-02-07
Not a bad little book, The Rough Guide to Comedy Movies gives heavily opinionated commentary on a heap of movies, actors and the different decades. It is a long way off being a comprehensive list and there are a lot of seriously funny movies and actors not in here. Like with the Rough Guide's travel guides a lot is missing. Where is UHF, the sensational National Lampoons Vacation trilogy and many other classics? It lacks the comprehensive coverage of rival books such as 1001 Movies to Watch Before You Die. However what is covered in here is interesting, will bring back memories and is certainly educational on the realm of comedy movies. It definitely inspires me to go and rent some of older movies I haven't seen for a while and even check out some I had never previously thought of watching.
Typo in the index.......2006-01-14
It claims that Doctor in the House is referred to on page 29. Actually DITH (which I don't care for) is written about only on page 28.

Dylan fans never forget.......2003-03-06
I'll be sorry to see this book eclipsed by Ellison's _Collected Interviews_, even if I do have Ellison in my amazon shopping cart already. The appearance of this book was a godsend, back in the days when we were all kicking ourselves for having failed to ferret away multiple copies of the issue of _Playboy_ which had featured THAT interview. It took an Australian journalist to get one of the pioneering volumes of responsible Dylan scholarship into print, and God bless'im, says this guy...
Portrait of a legend when he was earning the title.......1997-06-24
This book compiles much of the best writing done about Bob Dylan in the '60's, when he was in the midst of what is perhaps the greatest burst of creativity by a musical artist in this century. Includes interviews from the Village Voice and Playboy, and lengthy, perceptive essays on an artist whose music holds up to infinite levels of analysis. The rather dated quality of these essays and interviews is what gives them their beauty. These articles were written when all of this was new and no one knew where he was going or where he would take us. Dylan was not the grizzled bluesman he is today, but an absolute force of nature in his mid twenties; a kid from Minnesota who became the axis of popular culture. It is generally acknowledged that the directions that rock took in the '60's sprang directly from him. And he often changed directions every few months. For example, John Wesley Harding, released at the height of the psychedelic era, was a quiet, acoustic album, which in turn led the Beatles toward a similar sound for the White Album

Robert K. Greenleaf's 1970 essay, "The Servant As Leader," has influenced an entire generation that now views traditional management philosophy as passé, if not counterproductive. His ideas on shared responsibility have taken hold among many respected business scholars, including Margaret Wheatley, Stephen Covey, and Ken Blanchard. In Insights On Leadership: Service, Stewardship, Spirit, and Servant-Leadership, edited by Larry Spears, these and other prominent followers of Greenleaf's teachings offer thoughts on the way the strategies can be used to redefine work to better meet the needs of people and organizations in the new millennium.
Book Description
From INSIGHTS ON LEADERSHIP . . .
Robert K. Greenleaf from "The Servant as Leader"
"The servant-leader is servant first. Becoming a servant-leader begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. . . . The best test is this: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?"
Stephen R. Covey from "Servant-Leadership from the Inside Out"
"You may be able to buy someone's hand and back, but you cannot buy their heart, mind, and spirit. And in the competitive reality of today's global marketplace, it will be only those organizations whose people not only willingly volunteer their tremendous creative talent, commitment, and loyalty, but whose organizations align their structures, systems, and management style to support the empowerment of their people that will survive and thrive as market leaders."
Ken Blanchard from "Servant-Leadership Revisited"
"With the traditional pyramid, the boss is always responsible and the staff are supposed to be responsive to the boss. When you turn the pyramid upside down, those roles get reversed. Your people become responsible and the job of management is to be responsive to their people. That creates a very different environment for implementation. If you work for your people, then what is the purpose of being a manager? To help them accomplish their goals. Your job is to help them win."

"It is one of the great ironies of our age that we created organizations to constrain our problematic human natures, and now the only thing that can save these organizations is a full appreciation of the expansive capacities of us humans." --Margaret J. Wheatley from "What Is Our Work?"
Leadership without hierarchy? Organization in a whirlwind of change? Community and shared responsibility in a global village? Soul in a free-enterprise world? Robert Greenleaf's visionary theory of Servant-Leadership continues to engage many of the best minds in and out of business. Greenleaf's prescriptions for employee empowerment and organizational change continue to achieve nothing short of miraculous results in organizations worldwide. As one enthusiastic observer wrote in Fortune magazine, "Once the consensus is forged, watch out: With everybody on board, your so-called implementation proceeds 'wham-bam.'"
In this sequel to the critically acclaimed Reflections on Leadership, many of today's most respected business thinkers share their insights into key aspects of Robert Greenleaf's revolutionary thinking. Over the course of 33 essays, a dream team consisting of such luminaries as Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard, Peter Block, Margaret Wheatley, John Schuster, and James Autry explore how Greenleaf has influenced today's business leaders and discuss a range of leadership principles at the heart of his philosophy, including stewardship, the spirit of the workplace, and the concept of healing leadership.
A source of inspiration and instruction, Insights on Leadership is required reading for senior executives, community leaders, and managers in for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

Quick read, multiple short stories.......2007-01-05
It is a great gathering of professionals from the field of leadership. The format of different authors for each chapter on different topics keeps it flowing and fresh.
Life-altering.......2002-04-10
Spears' compilation of essays focusing on the topic of "Servant-Leadership" from some of the greatest corporate and social minds of the past 30 or so years, is the greatest testament to the strength of the individual that I've read. Reading Spears' gives me hope for a new tomorrow in terms of changing prevalent paradigms. Servant Leadership Revisited.......2000-04-04
Insights on Leadership taps current and respected authors and scholars for their thoughts and strategies on shared responsibility, leading by example, and establishing a sense of community - all hallmarks of Robert Greenleaf's servant leadership legacy. The text comprises 33 essays organized around four themes: service, stewardship, spirit, and servant-leadership. The essays are refreshing because they are rooted not only in a spiritual domain but also in exemplary and successful practice. Even with a recent proliferation of mass-market business writing that includes an element of the spiritual, this text offers a variety of approaches with fresh and singular perspectives. This is due partly to the different disciplines the authors represent as well as the creative approaches these authors take to applying the servant-leadership philosophy and model to specific work problems. This book is quite readable and inspiring. Each essay is carefully reasoned, clearly expressed, and devoid of management jargon. It should be on the reading list of those who wish to transform themselves and their organizations by embracing the fact that they are servants and stewards of those with whom they work.
