Brilliant book on art and the black man!.......2002-01-17
This collection of essays may have come from a particular exhibit or conference. It is a book that discusses black men's status as objects of art. Don't sleep! The art world is racist. Coco Fusco and bell hooks have effectively documented this. So this anthology is a very needed intervention. Articles cover topics such as gay black men in movies, the visual representation of gangsta rap, Mapplethorpe, etc. The contributors analyze numerous art mediums, not just painting or film. What I love about this book is how straight black men and gay black men are treated equally; a discussion of one does not marginalize the other. I especially love the article "The Gangsta and the Diva." This book is incredible!
Book Description
With this book, artists can make their own slides for entering competitions, obtaining grants and commissions, and submitting their works to galleries. The book provides specific instructions for working with various types of art and avoiding common problems such as reflections, glare, and shadows. Starting with basics such as what cameras and tripods are best suited for this type of photography, the book progresses into more advanced areas including the ideal lighting for art slides and how to best make use of the latest advances in film technology.

Especially for the Artist Who Knows Nothing About Serious Photography.......2005-09-26
No matter what your media, you need to consider having a good photographic record of it. This lets you keep a "portfolio" of prints handy, rather than trotting out the bulky originals; send slides to shows and galleries; keep a record of works you sell or give away; and provides the basis of making prints. The how-to is excellently done: I got good results from my first roll. It cost a couple of hundred dollars to get started, in SLR camera body, lenses, tripod, and film, but you can't buy a good easel for that -- about what a big assortment of pastels runs.
Good Information.......2003-04-22
Good information for those who need to take pictures of their work. This is an excellent reference. I highly recommend it if you are an artist without much photography experience and want to do it yourself.
A Little and Thin Book , but in a large format........2000-11-14
Watch for those small books that fit comfortably in a pocket. They don't have fluff, get down to business, and are worn from significance. Photographing Your Artwork is a sort of right arm, studio mate for me, a painter-educator. I teach a Professional Issues seminar to young studio artists at an art school. At last this old friend is back-in-print. Believe me! There is no other reference in print that so clearly covers the basics. More importantly, does its job of teaching with style and clarity. Visual artists need this information and the skills it teaches.
A word from the author..........2000-09-08
I'm very happy that Amherst Media is reissuing Photographing Your Artwork. Originally published in 1987, it's still a unique resource--the only how-to book of its kind, as far as I know, that's truly aimed at artists who want to photograph their own work successfully and inexpensively, as opposed to the photographers who would otherwise do it for them. That said, I think the book's information is equally valuable for photographers who want to shoot artwork, either for artist friends or as a moneymaking business. And to apply its techniques, photographers don't have to invest in expensive strobe equipment. The techniques it describes are simple but very effective. This new edition has been revised to reflect small changes in suitable films, which have actually improved in the intervening years. When the original edition went out of print, I got lots of calls from artists trying to locate a copy. If you're out there, here it is! And thanks for your interest. --Russell Hart
Excellent Resource.......2000-08-27
I looked all over for the information contained in this book and found bits and pieces here and there. This book has it all, clearly written, easy to understand and very comprehensive. I couldn't be more satisfied!
Book Description
Even artists with limited photography experience can produce competent reproductions of their artwork with Roger Saddington's easy-to-use book. This guide tells artists how to take satisfying photos without spending a lot of time or money. Readers will learn how to: Get good results with their current photography equipment Master the relationship between film type and light source Avoid unnecessary pitfalls with processing labs Present slides and photos professionally Recognize the best shooting conditions
Good slides or photos are essential for entering art competitions, applying to juried shows, keeping records and presenting a portfolio. Artists will appreciate the book's easy steps and common-sense approach to the photography process.
Roger Saddington gained extensive knowledge of art reproduction during his five-year tenure at the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia. He teaches a popular class on photographing artwork and lives in Australia.

Disappointingly out of date........2007-06-26
Although the information given was essentially correct, it was not up to date regarding use of digital cameras.
This book should have been thoroughly updated before being reprinted.

Great Visual Reference ... Too General with Information.......2004-05-30
This is a decent book on photographing artwork -- but not the the most comprehensive. The strengths of this book are that Mr. Saddington (1) discusses the use digital media, and (2) makes the process of photographing artwork very user-friendly by providing great visual references throughout. The user-friendly aspect is the book's strongest selling point, especially for artists who are new or novices at photography, or visually oriented (i.e., no patience for reading instructions that come with few or no pictures). Mr. Saddington's book provides pictures of what makes a bad negative exposure/photograph, and provides a concise explanation for these results, and does the same for an example of a good negative exposure/photograph. He also provides illustrations of setting up equipment and artwork for photographing. The weakness of this book lies in the general details provided ... unfortunately, Mr. Saddington provides a limited amount of helpful hints and leaves out specific details for for problem shooting ... I base this opinion on my comparison of this book with a book called "Photographing Your Artwork" by Russell Hart. If you buy Mr. Saddington's book, I'd recommend supplementing it with the purchase of Mr. Hart's book. The two books complement each other. Where Mr. Saddington's book lacks in details, Mr. Hart's book fills in the information gaps. On the other hand, Mr. Hart's book is very text heavy and has very few illustrations ... so if you're a visually-oriented person, Mr. Saddington's book would easily compensate in the area of illustrating this very important process. Again, Mr. Saddington's book is decent, but it should be used as a supplemental reference, especially for the visually-oriented person.
Not enough information.......2004-02-20
Actually I give this book zero stars. It is one of those books that pads the pocket of the author but is stingy with the information it gives. It is too general and does not really deal with problem solving the technicalities involved with taking slides of your own art. I wanted to know on which side of a slide to place a mask. The book failed to give this important piece of information. I found that I had already bought a more comprehensive book, so I feel that I wasted my money buying this book.

The Rebel's saga is confusing..........2000-10-16
First off, I didn't like this series, the technology dosn't make sense. It's both primitive and "futuristic" at the same time. Apparently they still drive cars, seemingly no better than any you could find on the street today, hundreds of years into the future. The plot is difficult to figure out, and I didn't like that it flashbacked for most of the book with little or no warning at all when reading from page to page. Pretty much, the only things I did recognize were the little palace and Sorrow's End, although the latter had fallen into complete ruin,...sigh...please, please those working for Warp write a nice nonconflicting story line that doesn't fly completly over the heads of your readers. Thanks.
A good sci-fi tale, but it doesn't seem like Elfquest........1999-11-05
This is an interesting science-fiction story that looks more like Star Trek than Elfquest. How can you have an Elfquest story with no elves in it? This tale is about humans who end up searching for elves in a time long after previous books in the series. It contains none of the familiar Elfquest characters. Wendy Pini wrote the first drafts of this story long before she ever started working on Elfquest. Later, she tried to incorporate it into the Elfquest saga, but I didn't think that idea worked very well. The writers and artists who worked on this space opera did a pretty good job, though, and I recommend it as a story in its own right. It's exciting and clean enough to read to kids.

Superb wordsmithing - content disappointing.......2005-10-23
I made it all the way to chapter 13 of Down on Ponce. But there was only so much romanticification of cynism and picking and gouging at the scabs of a society woefully in need of positive recuperation for me to continue another page. I couldn't relate to any of the characters at all. Their lives spinning in underpowered autistic inertial spins was nauseating. The "grit" seemed contrived to draw me in, but reminded me of the faux cynic hardcase ambiance used as a dimly glowing subterranean lure found in so much of Hollywood fare lately (which is typically what I'm trying to avoid in my reading). The societal us/them split embossed throughout the story seems contrived, too black and white given the spewing relativism of the characters. The "enemy" is too conveniently defined and pidgeonholed while the closest things to protagonists believe in nothing at all. I imagine Willard might have screenplay material here, but more in the Pulp Fiction vein than the Shawshank Redemption vein.
On the other hand, the word-smithing was superb, and the descriptiveness was vivid while being very concise. Willard is clearly a very skilled writer and Down on Ponce is a very respectable display of talent. But I am not his audience.
Great book for Michael Moore fans.......2004-04-10
In the first few chapters, a rich Republican asks the hero to kill his wife, a Republican politician induces a solitary orgasm while watching anti-abortion wackos throw fetuses at a 15-year-old girl, and (presumably) Republican businessmen refuse to tip their waitresses. I stopped reading after the narrator has a dream in which everyone in America turns into cockroaches the day after Ronald Reagan is elected. I've read and enjoyed many books where conservatives are cast as the villains, but this isn't a novel - it's a dehumanizing and contempt-filled screed. But that's just my reaction. If you enjoy books by Michael Moore or Al Franken (and many people do), you'll probably love this.
One of your better tales of criminal behavior.......2003-02-19
Few books are so funny I actually laugh out loud at them, but Willard's deft touch with character made me guffaw several times while reading "Down on Ponce." The satire of Atlanta's criminal class is affectionate and the absurd but brisk plot keeps you turning the pages. The ending is completely preposterous but you'll be having too much fun to care. (People without senses of humor -- like the gentleman who thought the blurb saying "Willard writes good" was straight -- should stay away, however, as should people who don't realize that criminals tend to not be very nice people.)
One look at the back cover and I new I was in trouble!.......2003-02-10
Upon recieving this book, I checked out the comments and one said:
"Fred Willard writes good"
To use such poor grammer in "recommendations" to read the book, you have to wonder if the publisher just couldn't find enough people who thought the book had any sort of redeeming value, whatsoever.
This story could have taken place anywhere; I didn't really get a feel that this took place in Atlanta. The story felt like it took place in some sort of non-decript wasteland of vagrants and
social inept thieves.
Quirky but hard as nails.......2002-01-06
DOWN ON PONCE grabbed me from page one and did not let go until the end. The characters are, well, different. Not your usual set of bad guys, or should I say, losers? Actually, they aren't really without-reason-bad, just pay-back-bad.
These guys and the characters they run into will have you laughing while saying OUCH!
The plot runs fast and twisty and the end is as one would hope for. As one would dream for. But if violence, even with laughs, isn't your game, well, better luck elsewhere.

Book Description
This volume has been designed as a tool for those beginning to study the life and works of Gioachino Rossini as well as for those who wish to explore beyond the established biographies and commentaries. To that end, items run the gamut from general music history reference works to specific studies, including Rossini staples (such as Stendhal, Radiciotti, and Weinstock) and the most recent investigations that seek to re-evaluate the composer and his contributions. Contents range from sources published in the early decades of the nineteenth century to works currently in progress. General subject areas include Rossini's biography and iconography; historical and analytical studies of his operatic and non-operatic compositions; his personal and professional associations; the artistic milieu and venues in which he worked; and the reassessment of his role in the development of nineteenth-century music.

Pretentious, snobby and useless.......2002-11-26
I've never even read the book but I have a friend who takes this woman's class. She is a typical academic, knows a lot about nothing. You would be well advised to find a book by an author who actually cares about music and not academic snobbery.
Customer Reviews:
James Savage, why did you leave?.......2007-07-27
These puzzles are witty and complex, requiring not only a solid knowledge of trivia but also insight into what Savage has in mind. Many of his clues are multi-level puns, and not just the theme clues, either. When I finished Volume 1, I was delighted to find Volume 2 ... but that's it, there's no Volume 3. Savage either fell off the face of the earth or got tired of the effort these puzzles must have required. I haven't seen anything of his in recent anthologies, either.
At least Savage left us these 100 jewels before he disappeared.
p.s. The gem in Volume 2 entitled "Stone Walls Do Not a Prison Make" is my favorite puzzle of all time. Elegant, beautiful, and philosophically intriguing, all in a single construction!
Savage but not brutal..........2001-07-12
Good, fun puzzles. Seldom trivial, but not super hard. I use a pen, however not unerringly. I have a second volume to enjoy.
A real workout.......2001-03-28
These are fiendishly difficult crosswords, and I recommend them to anyone who relishes a real mental workout. Savage uses a few obscure clues and answers, but nothing beats the satisfaction of actually finishing one of these monsters.
In the one I just completed, Savage manages to use every double-letter combination from AA to ZZ in an answer (wait'll you get to QQ). It may take you a couple puzzles to get used to some unconvential cluing (I'll make up an example: Clark in "Gone with the Wind" would be a clue for GABLE, not RHETT as most constructors would have it), but these are really fun once you get on a roll....
