Book Description
INTERPLAY: A series that addresses controversial themes and issues in the arts.
Bodies of Modernity explores the ways in which men's and women's bodies are represented in late nineteenth-century France. Thought to be unequivocally different from one another, modern men and women were expected to express their sexuality and social positions in the clothes they wore, the poses they struck, and the behavior they exhibited. In a series of case studies, Bodies of Modernity looks at works by Czanne, Renoir, Seurat, Tissot, and Caillebotte as well as photographs of male body builders to establish an image of the modern body. Well-known works such as Renoir's Nude in the Sunlight, Seurat's Young Woman Powdering Herself, and Czanne's Large Bathers are given new interpretations, while lesser known paintings like Tissot's series on The Women of Paris or Caillebotte's iconoclastic Man at the Bath are looked at seriously for the first time. Bodies of Modernity is an original account of one of the best-loved periods in Western art history. By taking "figure and flesh" as its focus, it bypasses traditional art historical categories and style labels to provide a reading of the work of the Impressionists and their contemporaries that gets to the heart of French society of the period.

Plain English.......2005-09-01
I have been taught by the author of this book in London. I find her written words clear and highly accessible. As a text for classes, it has provided me with much needed insight into a new field about which I am now very enthusiastic. I acknowledge limitations in every methodology or 'ism' including feminism. I found this book, however, a clearly written and readable account suitable for a lay-reader and students alike.
A Rebuke to Denver's "feminazi" comment.......2004-01-10
Since the Denver, CO student is the only review on offer, I felt compelled to give more insight on this enlightening book and talented author. Even though "feminazi" is a highly offensive term, refuting it would catapult me into that very category(or so believed by the people who would actually use such a term). Regardless, I don't want to run the risk of undermining my message by spouting fervent feminist views. This book is not really about that. This book calls into question the socialization that has been reinforced for many centuries in western culture. Tamar Garb chooses a particular time--late 18th Century--and a particular culture--Paris--to deconstruct that socialization from a modern perspective and offer new insight on how social influence, and the strict gender constructions involved, are inescapable for the artist, himself being a product of that culture and social order. The female nude has long been the subject of high art, making the woman the object of the gaze. Art was created for patrons who could afford it, which were never women during this time for they scarcely worked and were certainly never the bread-winners of their households, and the art reflected that showing a woman in the role that those patrons, men, would want to see her: as the object of their sexual desire, as a societal symbol of status (by the way she dressed), as the goddess of their domestic realm. We of course take this for granted today in a society with much greater equality between the sexes, but in late 18th century France, social gender differentiation was extensive...and those social constructions influenced artists in the production of their work, just as they influenced every human being belonging to the culture, whether they were conscious of it or not. The most contemporary and current art-historical atmosphere is one in which modern art historians, scholars and critics are primarily concerned with looking at the art production of the past in a new light and offering some new perspective on it. There is more concern now with art as a product of a certain culture at a certain time, and it can be read as such--as a historical by-product, as it were. The feminist movement is a part of the current effort to call our socialization into question, but it's not the only movement involved, and to dismiss this book as entertainment for "feminazi's" as the above reader did is obtuse and quite ridiculous. This is a thorough examination of the gendered socialization of men as well as women in a particular cutlure and time that happened to produce some of our greatest artistic masterpieces. You'll find no women's liberation mantras in Garb's text, only a slow and thorough breakdown of the social aspects of the artistic environment in late 18th century Paris, how that influenced the artist, and how we can view in new light the artwork passed down to us from another time and place of which we have no first-hand knowledge....pure and simple! It's a great read.
feminists will enjoy.......2001-10-29
Yes, feminists will enjoy. But that is about all who will. I had to read this for a class. It does give some good information about artists, but most of the book is over-annalyzing and very over critical. It want's the artists to be very dirty old men who only think about sex when doing art. I think that it is a false commentary who many feminazis would enjoy.

Optics.......2007-07-04
This schaum's outline is too old for this topic (same thing for Optics by Eugene Hecht ISBN: 0805385665). It is time for someone to write a new one even if physics has not changed! (I guess what you pay is what you get!)
Pro: good summary for something you know
con: not much detail like many old books from schaum's
Good book.......2007-06-13
This is a great book for somebody who wants to learn basics and get a feeling about optics. Helped me with the exam too.
Great supplement for exam prep.......2007-05-07
I used this book as a supplement for a course in Physical Optics, mainly to get practice in solving problems. I found the chapters on Polarization and Diffraction very useful. This book helped me get a better grade in this course. This book does not cover the topics like Jones and Coherence Matrix and Stokes vector. However these topics are covered well in the same author's Optics text. BTW, The Optics text is also very good. Solving problems in this book and then approaching the text gives a much better understanding of Optics. This book does not cover Poincare' sphere, which is also an important topic for which we cant find material anywhere except our Professor's lecture notes. Overall, this book is a must if you are taking any Optics course or the GRE physics text or if you just want to master the basics of Optics.
Good book.......2006-08-15
Its a good book to work problems in congunction with a regular text book. The practical side is limited for engineering purposes. Smith or Fischer is a better book.
I am a practicing engineer, so I look at stuff from what works in real world. It would have been a very good book when I was in grad school (many moons ago:).
Clear concise outline of optics.......2005-12-31
This Schaum's outline is better than the expensive textbook by the same author on the same subject in many ways, and in my opinion stands alone as a guide on optics. It gets to the meat of optics via solving problems that range from simple to difficult, which is particularly attractive to engineers learning or reviewing this subject. To me, the only chapters that seemed a bit confusing were the first two on wave motion and on electromagnetic waves and photons. For that material you may need to consult another source. From that point onward, however, the outline couldn't be any better. The outline even has a chapter that introduces Fourier optics. This outline would make an excellent review or supplement for someone taking a course in Photonics that uses Saleh's "Fundamentals of Photonics". That textbook has virtually no solved problems in it whatsoever, and the first third of the book follows the material covered in this outline nicely.
Book Description
Hundreds of years ago, the Five Lands joined together to end the tyranny of Mordath. Now a mysterious force has brought him back from the dead, this time with magic powers. With a troll army at his back, Mordath soon puts the Five Lands under his heel. He is the unchallenged master of the world. Only one woman has eluded his iron grip. And with that one woman rests the sole hope of ending Mordath's reign of terror. Sojourn is the story of Arwyn, a woman whose quest for vengeance began in the fires that engulfed her city. Arwyn's one aim is to slay Mordath, but to do that she must first find the weapon that can kill a man who is already dead. One of CrossGen's most popular titles, Sojourn takes a fresh approach to classic fantasy themes using some of the best artwork in comics today. Sojourn V.2: The Dragon`s Tale begins in earnest as she searches for the first of the Five Fragments in a dragon`s treasure hoard. But a beast as powerful as a dragon might represent a quick route to Mordath`s destruction if the creature can be harnessed. Fans of fantasies such as The Lord of the Rings and Robert Jordan`s `Wheel of Time` series will be enchanted by the epic story and magnificent art of SOJOURN. Writer Ron Marz and artist Greg Land are both Wizard magazine Top 10 creators.
Customer Reviews:
artwork disappointing.......2004-11-02
I loved Sojourn 1 -- a great story line supported by Greg Land's incredible drawing. I bought book 2 of the series hoping for more of the same but was greatly disappointed in that the first and last chapters are drawn by different artists. The characters look so different that I spent the whole first chapter wondering if I'd somehow wandered into a different story. Was that blonde supposed to be Arwyn? Was that guy Gareth? Thankfully most of the book is drawn by Greg Land. I was on familiar territory again when I reached Chapter 2. The last chapter is a complete letdown because it too has a different artist, so again you feel that Arwyn and Gareth have disappeared and have been replaced by doubles -- and not very good ones at that. A very disappointing experience.
Lifeless; ordinary.......2004-02-07
This is not one of Crossgen's better works (that would be their "Way of the Rat" or "The Path" series'). The story is continually "voiced-over" with a running commentary by the grating "rogue" hero. The characters all seem to be drawn with porn stars as the models--the women are big-chested and preternaturally beautiful; the guys are all long-haired and unshaven. You're supposed to really feel for the heroine and her desire for revenge on the evil sorcerer who killed her family but it's really just tiresome and cliched. This series is, at the very best, really well-done eye candy.
Enjoyable Fantasy story.......2003-10-27
If you love LOTR, D&D, MTG, or any other fine fantasy, you'll enjoy this series. I'd highly recommend it. Purchased vol's 1 and 2 from Amazon and am soon to purchase vol3. :)
The Sojourn saga continues.......2003-06-14
The second trade paperback of the Crossgen series "Sojourn" continues with the same fervor of the first and makes your tounge water for the third. Arywn, the beautiful herione chosen to defeat the bad guy to save the world, Gareth, the cycloptic narrator, Kreeg, Arwyn's faithful poochie, Mordath, Skeletor's first cousin [not really], and Neven, the mysterious mage all return as the hunt continues to track down the shards of Aiden's arrow.
Without giving too much away, volume 2 focuses on the attempt to retrieve of the first shard and an encounter with a very unusual dragon. There is more character development for Arwyn and Gareth, and we are left just as confused regarding Neven's role. And Kreeg goes "woof".
What sets Sojourn apart from other series' (in my opinion) is the role of Gareth. He is a narrator, a commentator, and a main character. Whereas Arwyn is rather tactid (is that a word?), we constantly hear Gareth's thoughts and opinions, but not so often that it gets annoying. Arywn's character is also phenominal since she is a strong herione with an unpleasant past who doesn't really want the arrow to save the world, but to avenge the death of her son and husband.
If you liked book one, you'll love book two just as much. If you didn't like book one, what's wrong with you? ;)
Fantasy without the fuss.......2003-03-04
I know, I know. You've enjoyed the two "Lord of the Rings" movies released so far and maybe thought about trying out some epic fantasy in printed form, right? But then you saw that most fantasy series out there are either at least half a dozen volumes long (or more!) or have individual volumes thick as a telephone book. In some cases, both descriptions are true! So, naturally you run out of the bookstore screaming in fear at the prospect of conquering all those pages. Well, here's your solution... if you're open to or already familiar with the comics medium, pick up the first two volumes of CrossGen's epic "Sojourn" graphic novel series. This volume, plus volume 1 ("From the Ashes") together collect the first 12 issues of this terrific fantasy series, and the story so far gives you the type of drama, wonder, adventure, and humor you experienced in Peter Jackson's films (though with its own personality and flavor), but without the time commitment, fuss, and... well, drudgery, of having to wade through a four-pound doorstop of a book (or two, or three, or... you get the picture). Instead of getting your weightiness from the literal weight of the book, you'll get it from the epic goings-on, courtesy of Ron Marz's entertaining writing, and from Greg Land's wonderfully detailed artwork. And for those of you who don't mind a nice, thick book, and even like 'em, don't worry, you do get well over a hundred pages in each of these first two volumes, plenty of pages to let you get good and immersed in the story. But not enough to send you away screaming.
Book Description
In this collection of imaginative and irreverent essays, Sean Condon argues with Colin Powell at a barbecue, explores the mental landscape of a male model, is stalked by Roger Moore, and discusses pretzels with Willem Dafoe. Full of acerbic humor, his unique approach gives any slightly disillusioned reader a delectable taste of the author's well-known wit.

Book Description
Sean Connery is one of the world’s true superstars, applauded by critics and filmgoers alike. Now, John Parker traces the rise to stardom of the tough Edinburgh street kid, who left school at the age of thirteen. Arriving in London with gold teeth and tattoos to seek his fortune in the meat market of bodybuilding, Connery fought against snobbery to become a self-taught Shakespearean actor. Then came the big break. Auditioning for the part of James Bond, he told producers with typical bluntness how Bond should be played, and it landed him the job—and overnight stardom. Connery went on to become one of the world’s most versatile, highly paid actors, winning an Oscar for his role in The Untouchables. Here, John Parker offers an engaging portrait of one of the most glamorous, talented, and complex actors in movie history.

Arise Sir Knighted Scot Sean (Thomas ) Connery .......2007-04-27
This is one of the many books that sterotype him in the James Bond role.
Just once we would love a book that gives us a sample of his heritage and his character as a fine gentleman. Not just James Bond 007 role.
This is not to say this is not entertaining but this is to our rating #3

Improve Your Game.......2004-04-15
An explanation of checkmate positions is the purpose of the book. It contains over 400 recent examples with clear diagrams and text to entertain the reader. The book opens with one move mates which are a series of errors by famous players. Then straighforward mating patterns illustrated by thematic diagrams slowly increase in complexityuntil the final chapter is "The Ultimate Test". Lively and educative, Find the Checkmate will improve your understanding and chances of winning.
Good Puzzle Book.......2004-03-25
An easy to read book with lots of original chess puzzles.
The best algebraic tactics book on the market. A must-have
Fun and Games.......2004-03-04
I have several puzzle books but this is one of the better ones. The standard games are missing which is a relief and the vast majority of puzzles are new to me. The comments at times are quite amusing and help the flow of the book. Some chapter headings such as 'Celebrity or Blunders and Brilliancies' mean that some work has gone into the book. Mr Lane says all the puzzles have been computed checked to eliminate multiple answers. This will be a help to me because I train kids and there is nothing more annoying than a quicker win after you say checkmate in 5. Is it worth buying? Yes.

Excellent and Enlightening.......2007-07-21
This is an enlightening book on corporate social responsibility by knowledgeable authors. As a manager you bring with you your own concept of what is right and what is wrong to your organisation. Every decision that you make is the application of these values to the question at hand. This is made more difficult by the pressures of organisational life. These are the pressures of rapid changes, the pressure for greater productivity, competition and superiors, among others. Sometimes managers make decisions which conflict with their own or society's values because of what they see as the pressures of the business world. Dealing with ethical and moral issues is often perplexing. This excellent book provides guidance on how we should we think through an ethical issue, the questions we should ask and the factors that we should consider and how we can ensure that corporate social responsibility issues receive the attention they deserve.
The ways that the authors suggest to enhance corporate social responsibility are practical and simple to implement and should enable companies to benefit from a favourable corporate image which should translate to benefits to the bottom line.
This is a well written book that is easy to follow and understand that is well recommended.
At last: a reference work for corporate philanthropy.......2006-04-05
The days of corporate irresponsibility are past. The public now expects companies to behave according to a higher social standard. And guess what - operating a business built on socially responsible principles pays off. Decision makers at companies large and small are learning that when they build their businesses according to the dictates of social conscience, they reap rewards such as increased profits, an improved corporate image and happier employees. And, they sleep better at night. Author and marketing expert Philip Kotler and social marketing consultant Nancy Lee describe six ways you can develop and implement a corporate social program. They clearly explain and analyze each initiative in its own chapter, including illustrative examples of successful campaigns from leading companies such as Ben & Jerry's, The Body Shop and American Express. Their methods do overlap and they are, at times, redundant. Yet the points are important enough to bear repeating. We think every professional whose company is engaged in corporate social marketing - or needs to be - will find a treasure trove of applicable information in this book.
An invaluable resource on Corporate Social Responsibility.......2005-04-01
Phil Kotler and Nancy Lee have created an invaluable guidebook for companies, nonprofits and their advisors to enhance corporate reputations while improving society. Besides demonstrating how corporate social responsiblity has boosted the bottom line and added value for investors on all sides of the cause world, the authors provide detailed "how to" models for every type of business and nonprofit. This book has quickly become the "must read" bible for CSR and those involved with marketing in the nonprofit sector.
