Some keyword demonstrations.......2003-07-25
The Charcoal, Sanguine Crayon and Chalk (CSC for short) is a somewhat difficult medium to find learning material on. Most books on pastel or painting mention "redchalk" or "sanguine" merely in passing as a sketching tool. Books on drawing hardly mention it at all. In this respect, this little book is almost unique in that it treats redchalk (drawing with black, sanguine and white chalks) as a subject in its own.
The book is essentially divided in two, where the first part deals with the media and tools needed for working with chalks. The text is some 90 pages long, and the first 25 or so pages are spent on tools, chalks, papers, blending, perspective, sketching etc. Most subjects are treated on two pages with huge pictures and a few lines of text. Of course, no one will learn, say, perspective or scetching from such breaf treatises alone, so the very beginner may want to look elsewhere to get some basic concepts and skills in place.
The last part of the book is devoted to "practical exercises". The exercises are very nice in that they suggest how the painting evolves through the various stages. My previous experince is with pencils and drawing, so I was quite happy to see that the paintings here look quite "bleak" through most of the work; only after the last few finishing touches does the portraits "spring to life". That's the kind of demostrattion that is most valuable for preserving inspiration in an would-be autodidact like myself.
Most of the emphasis on CSC is presented from the painter's point of view. The basic techniques are based on various ways of handling the chalk bars with the objective of making surfaces of color on the paper. No matter if one uses cross hatching or side strokes, once the color is on the paper it is blended with a stump, cloth or brush. The demonstrations clearly show that such techniques can produce stunning results, but I would like to see more of the "drawing" techniques, i.e. lines and cross hatching left in place in the finished work. Painters appear to regard CSC as a fast and efficient tool for preliminary sketches, a tool for some sort of "limited painting". To me, CSC is a form of "extended drawing" that lets me do things and exploit effects the pencil alone does not provide. Unfortunately, this little book does not treat the "drawing aspects" of CSC.
All in all, this book provides great insporation as well as quite a few hints and suggestions about techniques and tricks. Although it leaves a bit to be desired, both on emphasis and in depth of coverage, and thus could be punished quite severely in terms of stars, the important point is that this book is actually available, providing suggestions, tricks and inspiration for trying out Charcoal, Sangune Crayon and Chalk.

This book helps you learn the "painterly" way of drawing with the broader dry media. Even though not specifically for pastels, it will help your pastel works.

it really isn't a helpful book. everything is not laid out in the book comfortably either. you jump from topic to topic without really going through anything completely. their are much better books out there then this

Comprehensive but concise--excellent overview and resource.......2007-06-06
This book's purpose is not strictly anatomical; it is an extremely concise overview of the figure in art. The perspectives include historical approaches, color, technique, demonstrations, diagrams, photos of nudes, tools, and varied media. It is an excellent resource for someone looking to cover everything quickly and is a great intro to figure drawing, and with its fast-paced approach, it gives the beginner/intermediate artist a great jumping-off point. The exercises are very helpful, the illustrations are just right, and the book covers pretty much everything. The colorful illustrations, fantastic explanations, and detailed text make this a great addition to the beginning artist's library.

This book covers materials and techniques more than actual figure drawing. If you're looking for anatomical diagrams or reference look elsewhere.

This handy book gets you started from scratch like it's the first time you know about pastel painting. Covers a good topics on materials, professional advice, techniques and tools. The page is littered with illustrations and photos to enhance write-up within. The only shortcoming is that the fonts of text tended to be slightly small but thought that's how they are able to keep the book handy.One can read from the start or choose from each relevant topic from the contents. organised layout and logical sequence of lessons conveyed. Good for beginners or intermediate people.

This book covers all the media and many techniques of drawing. I would not have this instead of Parramon's "Drawing in Penicl", but it is nevertheless very helpful.

This book covers everything from the history of color photography to color theory, filters, film, digital photography, preservation and even breezes over some alternative processes at the end (thumbs up!).
"Assignments" thoughout the book encourages your own thinking and the development of your skills, and if you don't mind the "textbook" approach, they are very useful.
The book does indeed feel like a complete guide to color.

While this collection isn't a retrospective, as expected from the title, Rose is Rose is my all-time favorite comic and anything about it is great in my opinion. This is a fine collection of strips; I especially enjoyed those that features the guardian angel or the biker chic. I found myself giggling out loud and having my mom read some of the garlic breath strips (a family joke) - and she giggled too! A must-have for any fan.

I have to agree with other reviewers. While I love the current work in Rose is Rose, this is not an anniversary collection. It is a standard reprint book (which if fine if you call it that) with a small number of historical pages. I was hoping for much more in a such titled edition.
If extra bonuses are to be included, then call them that. See the Fox Trot treasuries for such examples. Otherwise, don't call it an anniversary.
Fans of Rose is Rose *will* love this volume, just don't be taken in by the title.

I am a math major, and I bought this book, thinking that it would either be a humorous book, or what it claimed...a way to impress people. It was completely worthless. Do not bother with it.
I know math is tough, and most people do not understand it at all. This book won't help you at all. It is wrong in places as well, and I mean basic stuff. Use with care!
A comprehensive guide to getting through mathematics.......2000-04-11
This title is an especially useful book in the Bluffer's series. It describes how to fake an extensive knowledge in post-graduate mathematics. The book focuses mainly on convincing others of your "superior" mathematical knowledge, however, there are some excellent ideas on bluffing reasonable answers for your math homework. It is clever and funny, and very useful for anyone trying to impress people.

Paper version of wonderful website........2004-08-07
For the Five years that I have been surfing the web, their are very few websites that I visit today that I did back then. One of these websites is dvdfile.com... which is ran by Peter M. Bracke, so it is pretty obivious why I purchases this book in the first place (to support one of my favorite websites).
But the Book, is really interesting. All the DVD specs is a complete rundown on alot of stuff you probably know, but then alot of things you never thought of can be found their. The 100 DVD reviews is exactly that. It is the interviews that make up the core of the book, and are probably the best part of it. They are highly interesting and actually insightful.
For DVD buffs, alot of this might be repetitive (except the interviews) but for people that think DVD is just about watching a movie, is a great book to show you all the posibilities those little round discs provide.
