Book Description
Charles Sheeler (1883-1965) is recognized as one of the founders of American modernism and one of the master photographers of the twentieth century. His work is synonymous with precisionism, a crisp, clean, hard-edged style that reconciled cubist abstraction and the machine aesthetic of Marcel Duchamp with American subject matter. Trained in industrial drawing, decorative painting, and applied art at the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia, Sheeler also attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he learned an impressionistic, painterly style. He later embraced European modernism and taught himself photography. Sheeler fully absorbed the lessons of each discipline and forged his own singular approach.
This beautifully illustrated book, created to accompany a traveling exhibition of Sheeler's work, features detailed analyses of the artist's mediums and working methods. Focusing on the complex, often paradoxical, relationships among photography, film, drawing, printmaking, and painting that were central to Sheeler's art, this pathbreaking book traces critical points in Sheeler's trajectory, beginning with a small selection of Sheeler's seminal photographs, circa 1917, of the interior of an eighteenth-century Quaker fieldstone house in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Sections are also devoted to the 1920 film Manhatta, made in collaboration with Paul Strand; a series of commercial photographs of the Ford Motor Company's River Rogue factory (1927); the enigmatic painting The Artist Looks at Nature (1943) and its related works; and finally a group of mill subjects from the 1940s and 1950s that experiments with photomontage.

Book Description
Albert Frey worked in Le Corbusier's atelier in Paris, but he is most closely associated with the 1940s and 1950s desert architecture of Southern California, and with the work of architects such as Richard Neutra and John Lautner.
This exquisitely designed monograph on Albert Frey focuses on two houses he built for himself in Palm Springs, California, one in 1941 (with an addition in 1953) and the other in 1964. Although both houses have a modern aesthetic, including glass walls and concrete construction, they are fully incorporated into their surroundings, in keeping with Frey's principles of paralleling nature in his work. This title, which was developed in collaboration with Frey himself, includes color and duotone photographs commissioned especially for this book. The book is exquisitely made and comes in a plastic slipcase.
Please note that this is a limited edition of only 2500 copies.

In Defense.......2006-02-19
I had to review this book in response to the previous review, giving it one star is unbelievable (But I guess we're all entitled to our opinion)! The book is essentially a visual hommage to these two houses (1 + 2) that Frey built in the California desert. It is simple in concept and execution, and is but a small and beautiful introduction to Frey's work. It is an aesthetic object in itself, a bijoux, a little gem. The book has wonderful photographs and design, especially the desert colors used throughout that reflect the simplicity of the desert landscape and Frey's architecture.
If you're looking for any indepth knowledge of Frey and his work, try Joseph Rosa's book instead. If you're looking for a beautiful little book (for a good price!), and an interesting interview, try this book. It won't necessarily extensively nourish the mind, but will, and did for me, provide some visual inspiration and desire to learn more about the man and the work.
From the book: "This book is primarily visual, emphasizing the materiality of Albert Frey's original studies. It begins with some pieces of his archive in their original colors and photographic formats, the media in which he designed and thought. With the new images that follow, it seeks to activate the experience, the textures, and the aesthetic of his Palm Springs homes."
Save your money.......2002-12-21
The captionless pictures are an amateurish mish-mash--a wall here, a cupboard there, a flower pot, etc.--that intends to explain the houses by showing their components. There might be one or two actual pictures of the complete houses, but they're not especially flattering. Makes you appreciate professional photographers. No technical info either. There is an interview at the end, however, if you're willing to buy the book for that.
Frey shows well in Europe.......2000-07-09
In London I stumbled on this beautiful book at the Tate museum. Interestingly Palm springs modernism seems to be a highly sought after style here and this book embodies the best of that look. I never knew Frey did the detailing of the Villa Savoye and helped execute the built in furniture. It is great to see that Europe architecture migrated and that within Europe today, the look that Frey designed for his own homes is very much appreciated and admired and inspires. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this book is invaluable.
Desert Dreams.......1999-12-21
Albert Frey's work is among the best fifties modernism has to offer. Unfortunately there is not as much literature about him as for instance on Neutra. 'Albert Frey Houses 1+2' tries to fill in the gap and focuses on the two desert houses Frey has built and extended over the years. The designs and changes are documented by colour photographs, instead of drawings. This approach unveils the tactility and vivid colours of Frey's work, but neglects the spatial qualities of his plans. Because most people have been introduced to his architecture by black and white pictures, this book now shows that the designs are much more complex and lively than expected. Pictures of personal items and private photographs are printed among the architecture and reveal Frey's sources of inspiration. The last few pages are dedicated to an interview, and are very inspiring. Frey turns out to be a very clever and sensitive person, who in many ways has been way ahead of his time. Drawback of this 'picture'-book is that it only serves as an introduction to Albert Frey's work. Because the focus of the book is on only two of his houses, and its approach is mainly visual, it leaves the reader behind with an urge to find out more about this gentle architect and his buildings.
palm springs' superstar speaks.......1998-11-20
visually, palm springs is back as one of our culture's most interesting spots. the mix of sand, glass, and metal that is modernism's desert design signature is in perfect shape here. albert frey, who perhaps more than anyone helped to shape that look, gets to showcase the two homes he built and lived in here. (one no longer exists, the other overlooks palm springs central from high atop palisades drive.)
the photos are from his personal archive, which author/collaborator jennifer golub (a producer at ad agency chiat day) was able to get him to open. the words are frey's too. since he's 95, we're lucky he talks to us now before its too late.
Book Description
Drawing from a rich and influential heritage that spans the 20th century, design in Palm Springs runs the gamut from Spanish hacienda-style architecture and interiors to classic mid-century constructions and contemporary experimentations. Its recent rediscovery by trend-setters like Tom Ford, Jonathan Adler, and Bruce Weber has made Palm Springs superhot again–as a destination and for design inspiration. This desert laboratory of avant-garde architecture, interior decorating, and freewheeling experimentation is now a focus for design and fashion fanatics around the world. Palm Springs Living showcases the inspiring, diverse range of exteriors and interiors in Palm Springs. Included are intimate peeks into the private homes of celebrity residents and brand-new photography of the legendary Modernist houses by Richard Neutra, Albert Frey, and many others. There is also the dramatic setting of Palm Springs and Palm Desert: swimming pools and private terraces set in rocky hillsides, desert evenings with the hills turning pink, and the dramatic mountain backdrop. Ultimately, Palm Springs remains a livable fantasy–the sun always shines and the architecture and interiors, unbound from winter’s cold blasts and the workaday world, offer a vision of the stylish life.

one-pound gospel vol.1...and more .......2006-07-12
This is for True Fans of Takahashi's work. One-Pound Gospel is a three part book series which is still popular and is one of the current projects that She is working on aside from her work on Inuyasha. Check this series out.
A good solid offering from Takahashi.......2003-06-01
I bought the first volume of this in a musty old book store, picking it up because I'm a big Takahashi fan. She seems to me to be the queen of creating what I like to call "loveable yet clueless jerks." Her male leads are usally vartiations on this. They mean well, but don't seem to pay very much attention. Kosaku is not exception. He's a goof, a guy who lets his stomach rule his mind, yet belives that everything will turn out ok in the end. This isn't ground breaking stuff- just more of Takahashi doing what she does best. Interesting characters, and a solid tradmark style- this is worth a look.
It was all right.......2002-01-02
Nice original plot, the art was all right. Kinda predictable
"a comedic prize fighter inspired by a lovely nun".......2000-01-07
Excellent! If you like Ranma 1/2 , Maison Ikkoku and other works by Rumiko Takahashi, then you'll love this one!
Tip my hat to One Pound Gospel.......1999-12-05
A comical, sweet blend of sports, romance and hilarius blunders, this series is a master piece. Atmitedly, I may be slightly biassed, considering this is the first of it's genre I ever read, but I was impressed by the animation and the storyline. Sister Angela, the main female character, is sweet without being ridiculously naive, an interesting contrast to Kosaku's, inoccent, happy-go-lucky nature. This unlikely and uncertain duo is delightful and sure to please. I cannot recomend this series enough.

red.......2004-08-06
Monty Python's Big Red Book has a lot of material from the show, which makes it a good one. This may not take you that long to read, but I think it'll be worth it. I first read this over my friend's house a few years ago, and I thought it was cool, so I got myself a copy.I'm surprised the spam song is in it with the lumberjack song. It's a nice thing to read right before you go to bed.Look, just read it yourself and see what you think.
Bigger rip-off than final rip-off.......2004-02-14
First of all, this book is neither big, nor red. It's quite thin actually, and is blue. There is limited new material in it, and the actual new material isn't very special. This doesn't seem like a Monty Python product at all. It was probably thrown together at the last minute. I purchased this today, finished it an hour ago, and I'm still frustrated with it. However, I purchased the "First 280 years of Monty Python" book, and really like it so far. "The Pythons" is also good, but is kind of all over the place, but "280 years" is mainly focused on the television show. So in conclusion, hesitate on this one, unless you think it will be the last Python book you'll ever buy.
Blue.......2000-05-11
Inevitably, this is a big blue book. My hardback copy dates from 1971, and originally cost 1.50 ukp. It's a fairly slim collection of material based around the first couple of series of the show - an advertisement for 'Whizzo Chocolate Assortment', a series of introductions from increasingly-flustered newsreaders, pages of classified ads, and more than a few naked women. It's much less effective than the television show - the transcriptions lose a lot without the delivery, and the original bits seem rushed. It has recently been re-released, and you can probably read it all whilst standing up in the shop.

Book Description
Grandmaster Joe Gallagher studies the Sicilian Najdorf in a simplistic way, introducing the crucial initial moves and ideas and taking care to explain the reasoning behind them, something that has sometimes been neglected or taken for granted.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-03-20
I was disappointed in this book. It was confusing in that the author tries to juggle too many lines of analysis at the same time. The lines that I could follow were helpful, but it read like a book whose pages had gotten mixed up and they couldn't remember what order to put them back in. Especially for a beginning player, this book will be confusing. It follows only one variation (Karpov's Be2 line for white) of the Najdorf. I was mislead by the content description to think that most variations would be covered to some extent. It was hard to finish.
An excellent introduction to the Najdorf Variation.......2006-07-27
Richard Palliser is to be congratulated on this excellent introductory book on the Najdorf variation of the Sicilian Defense, one of the more popular chess openings. It starts as follows: 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6.
Many chess champions have played the Najdorf for Black. Does that mean that you ought to do so as well? Many people would say yes. I wouldn't. The reason that these great champions play it is that they want to win with Black against strong masters or even grandmasters. But suppose you are playing someone who is noticeably weaker than you? You may well have simply evened the odds against someone you would normally beat, even with Black.
I feel that the problem is that White will play an aggressive system, where one Black error means curtains. Not just a good position that White could have or should have won, but a position that Black has to resign. White can be rated much lower than Black and still be very well booked on a dangerous attack. Black will need to defend carefully. If Black forgets the proper defense, that's not good at all. Worse, it's probably going to be White, not Black, who comes up with a TN (theoretical novelty). White simply has too many options for this not to be the case. And White can spend a while doing home analysis before the game with the aid of a computer. Yes, White is more likely to come up with a surprise than Black. And not knowing White's line, Black is going to have trouble saving the game.
The book begins with a chapter on 6 Be2 for White. This has been a favorite of a World Champion, Anatoly Karpov. Karpov has had a tendency to slowly outplay most of his opponents, and 6 Be2 is a fine move for him. I do not recommend it for the rest of us. Next, we get to the most popular line, 6 Be3. That is a good line, but I don't recommend it for White either. For one thing, I feel rather strongly that putting that Bishop on e3 is generally a strategic error in the Sicilian. It always seems to get hit with moves such as Ng4 by Black at the most inconvenient times. By the way, 6...Ng4 is a pretty good answer to 6 Be3, as the author spends over 30 pages pointing out.
The next White idea is 6 Bc4, Bobby Fischer's favorite line. It's not bad, although it is not my favorite move. The author also discusses a couple of minor lines, such as 6 f4 and 6 g3. But they aren't major threats to Black's setup.
No, the move that I think puts Black in the gravest danger of losing rating points to a supposedly vastly inferior player is 6 Bg5. That is what I recommend, and Palliser spends enough time on this move to get his readers acquainted with the main ideas.
The main line that I think makes the most sense for White is 6 Bg5 e6 7 f4 Be7 8 Qf3 Qc7 9 O-O-O Nbd7 10 Bd3 b5 11 Rhe1 Bb7 12 Qg3 b4 13 Nd5 exd5 14 exd5 Kd8 15 Nc6+. Not only is Black likely to get in trouble in this line, there are all sorts of alternative lines for White along the way. Palliser shows us a good game in this variation.
As the author explains, a complicated alternative line for Black is 6 Bg5 e6 7 f4 Qb6, the infamous "Poisoned Pawn" variation. Palliser shows us a little about the continuation 8 Qd2 Qxb2 9 Rb1 (as the author says, 9 Nb3 is also a good try) 9...Qa3 in this book. He recommends 10 f5 here, which is a good line, although I happen to prefer 10 Be2 Be7 11 e5. Another popular choice for Black is 6 Bg5 e6 7 f4 b5, the Polugaevsky variation. That's risky. The author shows us how Peter Leko plays against this with White, and I recommend looking at his lines here.
In my very first tournament chess game against a Master, I played White against the Najdorf. I think my game shows some of the resources for both sides in this interesting defence:
1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 (My opponent was well aware that the White side of the Najdorf was my specialty, and that playing 2...d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6 here would simply be asking for trouble.) 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 d6 6 Bc4 (Black has avoided my favorite line against the Najdorf and can now play a6 with confidence.) 6...a6 7 Qe2 b5 8 Bb3 Be7 (As Palliser explains, this aggressive system for White simply gives Black a good game. Now 9 Be3 is recommended for White, but as I explained earlier, I had no intention of playing that move.) 9 Rg1 (My opponent did not even seem surprised.) 9...O-O 10 g4 b4 11 g5 bxc3 12 gxf6 (This gives Black a chance to lose at once, as 12...Qa5? 13 Rxg7+ wins for White.) 12...Bxf6 13 bxc3 Qc7 14 Qf3 Kh8 15 Bh6 (Realizing that I had been outplayed, I was hoping that Black would try to defend with 15...Rg8, as I was planning 16 Qxf6! gxf6 17 Rxg8+ Kxg8 18 Kd2, with a draw. Unfortunately, I had overlooked 15...Be5, which gives Black an excellent game as 16 Rg5 gets splattered by 16...Nd7. Against 15...Be5, I would have had to try 16 Bg5, but Black would probably have won after that. Anyway, instead of any of this, something ridiculous happened.) 15...Nd7?? 16 Qxf6 Qxc3+ 17 Ke2 gxf6 18 Bg7+ Black Resigns.
I highly recommend this book.

a book for novices.......2005-07-01
I was looking for a book that would provide detailed, in-depth information. I did not find what I was looking for here.
It has helpful information if you are completely new to the industry. If you have ANY experience couples with some common sense, then this is not what you're looking for.
It did have a resources guide in the back that I found helpful, but that's about it.
