Book Description
Part of a ten-volume bibliography series on comic art compiled by John A. Lent during the past decade, this volume provides more information on U.S. and Canadian comic art, animation, caricature, and gag, political, illustrative, and magazine cartoons than any other printed source in the world. Lent, founding editor of International Journal of Comic Art and longtime scholar of cartooning globally, takes great pains to be exhaustive, representative, and accurate in providing 11,367 citations of books, chapters, articles, and "fugitive" materials gleaned from a variety of sources worldwide, including about 400 periodicals and journals. Easy to use, incorporating a well-structured outline that includes categories and sub-categories, Lent spans every conceivable aspect of comic art. Other features include periodical directories for both Canada and the United States with addresses, typical contents, and inaugural dates of 101 comic art-related journals, magazines, and fanzines, and citations to hundreds of cartoonists and animators and their characters and works. Undoubtedly, this volume and the other nine in the Greenwood/Praeger series are unequalled as the definitive comic art bibliographies.
Product Description
An up-to-date manual for modern film development techniques. Companion volume to the bestselling The Darkroom Cookbook, this book concentrates on films, their characteristics and the developers and other chemicals each requires for maximum control of the resulting image. It specifically addresses the difficult subject of T-grain film development and includes rarely found information on film development and the nature of film developers. The authors also tackle many of the widely accepted myths of film development. They reject the trend toward scientific evaluation of films and developers in favor of the photographer s development of a personal aesthetic, without relying exclusively on densitometry or H&D curves. 192 pp., fully illus., 7 x 10 , Spiralbound.
Customer Reviews:
Chemistry.......2006-08-04
Things you never knew about the developing process are in this. I was quite impressed, and am enthusiastic about re-reading it.
ny review of this excellent book.......2005-09-30
very useful, it goes deep in the film developing as expected. It's a good starting point to make the own recipe and to learn *how works this kind of developer*. And many many more useful storic and pratic informations. Simply I love it. Dedicated to everyone feels to be an hero in this digital war against the true, pure, black and white...
A bit disappointing.......2003-07-21
I bought this book as the other books I have are now a bit dated. As the understanding of film development is always evolving, I thought this book would give me the latest ideas and knowledge.
It does to some extent, but I could not help feeling the authors did not take the time to fully research and comprehend the details. Where they have quoted chemists / researchers the details are clear. However where they have tried to interpret or discuss aspects in some places it appears they do not clearly understand what they are trying to explain. The result is that they contradict themselves, fail to make things clear, or just plain get things wrong. They also only seem to address research by Kodak and a few independent researchers. The book thus misses out on research done by Fuji, Agfa, Ilford, etc. which is a significant omission in my opinion.
So is the book worth it ? I think that I would still buy it as there are very few sources of up to date information available. And to be fair, they seem to have taken care in reproducing the formula. However, I would be sure to read some of the older books on developers, and cross check the information before relying on it.
Another great advanced user book from Anchell........2003-02-12
I bought and read every page of all three of Steve Anchell's black and white photo information books: The Variable Contrast Printing Manual, The Film Developing Cookbook, and The Darkroom Cookbook. Why? Because he gives a mix of an historical view plus tells what to pick of the best current chemistries. He does this without bogging down in the actual complexities of a college chemistry course keeping it at a usable technicians level. Since he also tells you why you are using various chemicals or paper his books do not dumb down but instead give you fascinating useful information. Anyone serious about darkroom work will appreciate his insights and commentary about chemistry use. He lists so many historical and current B&W chemical formulas and their use that any B&W experimenter will find the books useful. Beginners may get information overload but anyone who has already done B&W developing will appreciate the vast amount of information. These books could use an overall rewrite to make them a bit simpler to understand, in spite of this they are one of the few sources to accumulate this B&W information and are well worth owning as a reference and explanation.
Great for history and formulas, NOT for beginners..........2002-02-15
I bought this book under the assumption and recommendation that it would teach me how to begin developing my own film... Unfortunately, this is NOT the book for that! This book has great historical value in describing the different formulas, their strengths and weaknesses, and contains charts that are probably valuable to those who ALREADY process their own film. This book is NOT for beginners looking into how one goes about processing their own film!

In response..........2004-11-07
In response to the child below me -- there are many different ways of drawing, and beautiful, over-intricate artwork does not make up for a good storyline and excellent characters -- which Rumiko Takahashi never fails to give. Clamp, since you chose the reference to them, can draw beautifully, but their storylines often crumble or lag -- something I haven't found in Takahashi's work. Obviously, this is someone who does not even bother to read the stories, but rather simply flips through to look at the pictures, otherwise one would realize what a positively ingenious (though corny-sounding at first) story that Miss Takahashi is capable of.
Cradle From Hell!? Martial Arts Cheerleading?!!.......2002-11-05
This was in fact my first Ranma 1/2 book, read it last night and laughed my cast off! Had just read a book about Baudrillard, and so was coming from a very strange place, and yet this Vol. 19 was incredibly enjoyable. Totally irreverent, stupid, and very very funny. I look forward to reading the rest of this series, it's a simulation I'm happy to be a part of. Martial Arts Cheerleading, O-KAY! You must read this for yourself, if nothing else it's hilarious. I am surprised I had not heard more about this series before, perhaps thats because of all of the sexchanging.
p.s.: I think the art work in this is superb, and perfect for the story, so forget the reviewer below who is obviously jealous, sheesh, insulting an artist in a forum where they can't fight back
Art is pathetically out of date........2002-05-22
Do my eyes decieve me or did Rumiko live in the time of Osamu Tezuka? Her art is too simple and old. I hope her next manga is a little more advanced in the art section. Imagine Clamp and Rumiko sitting side by side looking at each others work. One draws like a kid and one draws some of the most magnificent art ever. Takashi is so overrated.
Ranma's back for the 19th time!.......2002-05-20
La! It was quite hard waiting for this book to come out, but now it is and all is well and good. ...Except the ending is a real cliffhanger and now I desparately need #20...
what happened in this manga, you ask? Ranma's pa begins to feel inferior to his son, which leads to a heated battle. Then Akane makes Cherry Blossom Mochi that will tell her who her true love is. Last but not least, a martial arts cheerleader falls madly in love with KUNO, of all people.
But my words don't do this story justice, so you'll just have to read it for yourself. You won't be disappointed (unless you're an anti-ranma or anti-rumiko type).
happy reading! ^_^
if there were more stars, id give 'em all.......2002-04-22
Rumiko Takahashi is brilliant. there is just no other way to say it. sure, she has her weaker stories and her stronger ones, but ill read them all. i completely recommend her work, if your even only slightly interested in manga or a good read. i just gave out my collection of Masion Ikkoku so as to spread her works!
buy this book and all her books! her stories are wonderful, her art fantastic, and im never disappointed.
more stars!
Book Description
They were the perfect family. Or were they? You've seen all the shows, but how closely were you paying attention? Bradypalooza contains in-depth analyses of each episode, highlighting continuity errors, production problems, and scenes lost in syndication. This is not a trivia book, and you won't see the word blooper anywhere inside. Everything Brady goes under the microscope, including the series, the Saturday morning cartoon, the theatrical releases, and yes, even the variety show. So keep this book handy. This is your guide to the Bradys as you've never seen them before.
Customer Reviews:
A Unique Take on a Unique Show - Excellent!!!.......2005-08-05
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was raised on the Bradys, like so many of us were, and this book brought back a lot of memories. The bloopers are a riot. I always loved the episode where Peter got the job at the school newspaper and struggles for days to come up with a story. Only after reading this book did I remember that Marcia was named editor of that very newspaper the prior season but never offered him any advice! Where's the love? And, as the author asks, how come nobody at the Brady wedding complains when Mike and Carol walk around together before the service? They're NOT SUPPOSED to see each other! And keeping up with the Brady doctors is impossible. Jan has a male doctor when she's allergic to Tiger, but when they all get the measles Carol says the girls have always had a female doctor. Good catch. And when Carol goes to work at Modern Woman Magazine, why is the editor a MAN? Good question! And why, why, why are the kids fighting over their lines in the Pilgrim episode, when it's a freakin' SILENT MOVIE? I like reading screw-ups like that.
Not sure what B. Groves means in his summary. In "The Dropout," one team wears white uniforms, the other wears red. And Greg wears green! The author is spot on. And in The Tattletale they do say that Alice can't drive. So her showing up at Mike and Carol's honeymoon suite in the middle of the night is a little peculiar. I don't know of many taxis that take you past state lines, so how the heck did she get there? Good point. Also, I love those factoids. They're not blunders, so they probably deserve their own category. But yeah, when Carol and Mike refer to "Doug" and "Mr. Cramer" in the broken vase episode, I never knew that Douglas Cramer was the boss of the show! How the author made the connection is beyond me.
One of the other things I liked was the information on the guest stars, who they were then and where they are today. I like the fact that Bobby and Peter's "Martians" were actually the kids stand-ins. Too funny. And all the casting of everyone's real life children - Florence Henderson's daughters, Robert Reed's kids, and Sherwood Schwartz's daughter, who had a recurring role as one of Greg's girlfriends. That's favoritism for you.
Can't wait to see which show he does next!
Not worth your time.......2005-07-29
As an avid Brady fan, I rushed to get this book as soon as it was available. It was just what I wanted - a guide to syndication cuts made in the show as well as blunders and inconsistencies made throughout the series. To my disappointment, the book itself is full of blunders. I actually contacted the author to help advise him - free of charge - and give him the benefit of my experience in order to make a second edition of the book more accurate. He turned me down flat. I guess he's happy enough with the way the book is.
The main reason I bought the book was for information on syndication cuts. Unfortunately, the author does not provide this for all episodes. And where he does, it did not always coincide with my own observations making me wonder how accurate it is.
But the bigger problem is that most of his cited "blunders" aren't blunders. They're either factoids ("Carol mentions a couple known as the Bernsteins. This is an inside joke."), some are editorial comments ("Isn't this episode a lot like `The Undergraduate'?") and some are just points of interest ("This is another episode in which the phrase `I never thought of it that way' is used").
And where *actual* blunders are cited, more often than not they can be explained fairly easily. For example, in "The Dropout", he complains that the baseball players at the ballgame are wearing red and white uniforms while Greg's uniform is supposed to be green and white - claiming this is an error due to stock footage. He has obviously forgotten there are TWO teams in a baseball game. He also seems to be overly concerned with things like how many model airplanes he thinks Peter has (when I was Peter's age I had 3 or 4 model airplanes and couple of model ships -- I guess that would be considered a blunder in the author's eyes) and how Alice gets around (I guess the author's never heard of a taxi).
The high level of inaccuracy really left me cold and rather frustrated. My recommendation: for hard-core Brady fans only.
Brady-O-Pedia.......2005-03-18
This book has so much going for it. If you are looking for the definiative book on the Brady bunch, this one is it. It covers not just the TV show, but the spin offs and movies. It is well worth the read. [...]
Most Original "Brady" book ever!.......2005-01-29
I've read several books on the Brady Bunch, but none had me laughing like this one. The author has done his homework and has told me stuff I never knew about this show. It's a very sarcastic examination of a true piece of pop culture. He identifies the plot holes that we all should have been scratching our heads at and really tackles the common myth that they were the perfect family. This is a MUST for any Brady fan.

A Life Apart is the apt subtitle of this scrupulously researched biography of the star as legendary for her fiercely guarded privacy as for her haunting beauty and luminous acting in such films as Camille and Ninotchka. Entertainment writer Karen Swenson delineates a unique personality considerably earthier than Greta Garbo's screen image: shy yet blunt, devoted to her craft but indifferent to fame, sexually magnetic to both men and women, a loyal friend who mercilessly punished disloyalty. The author meticulously fact-checked the often unreliable memories of companions and lovers such as Cecil Beaton and Mercedes de Acosta to comprehensively document Garbo's long life (1905-90).
Customer Reviews:
Although interesting but..........2005-09-12
Although the book is interesting taking into consideration its factographic side, it is written in a very pretentious manner trying unnecessarily to colorize the biography and therefore making it trivial and sometimes even pathetic. Just to mention: usage of such expression like "Turkey's great metropolis" in order not to call it Istanbul or Canstantinople seems to be quoted from an essay composed by some sixth-grade pupil.
I still consider "Garbo" by Barry Paris the best Garbo's biography.
A Bio Apart.......2005-01-20
Swenson conveys an understanding of and respect for her subject as few biographers have. Not that anyone can know too much about Garbo, Swenson dug deep and this bio is full of pictures and information to make any Garbo fan's heart flutter into cardiac arrest! The Best!
Read Swenson if you want to be alone with Greta Garbo!.......2003-02-19
Karen Swenson is to be commended for a fine biography of Greta Garbo. Garbo is an enigmatic star more closely resembling a lonely sphinx camping out in the Sahara than a glitzy glamorous star in Hollywood's Golden Era.
Swenson delineates the Garbo career from the Swede's girlhood in a poverty stricken home in Stockholm to the extremely wealthy recluse she became in New York following her 1942 retiriement from the silver screen. (Her last flick was a bomb called "Two Faced Woman." Garbo had at least two faces in real life. The athletic outdoor woman she was could be kind and cruel as her moods were quicksilver in the soul of this Viking child of the North.
Barry Paris's book on Garbo contains more pictures and is, on the whole, better written. I did, however, enjoy Swenson's work
on the screen legend devouring the biography in huge portions of time.
Garbo was a great talent who lit up the screen with her peerless beauty and style. Costumes by Adrian and the magic of MGM camermen aided her in the climb to the top but she was herself unique for her aura of lonely beauty.
I appreciate the work of Karen Swenson. I hope you the reader do as well. If you read only one book on Greta Garbo you could do worse than selecting this excellent biography to fill you in on the Swedish queen of film.
Garbo: A Life Apart.......2002-01-02
Garbo: A Life Apart is a modern biographical masterpiece. I got started and could barely put it down. It was filled with great information. I have been following the life of Greta Garbo for about 7 years and have a collection of memorabillia to show for it! I have to say this is a MUST for any fan or collector of Garbo material!!! BRAVO Karen Swenson!!
Fascinating and believable..........2000-10-26
This wonderful story, about a wonderful woman, combines a selection of rare photos with startling new information about her childhood, her career, tumultuous relationships with lovers and friends, and her life after Hollywood.

Book Description
Memories of Forestry and Travel reveals how there is more to forestry than trees and more to travel than tourism, and explains how forests are vital to human survival. Fred Hummel places forestry in the broader context of rural development, nature conservation, and the need for an international effort to conserve a precious resource. His unusual insight into the world of forestry is set against the backdrop of a life spent in forests throughout the world, from Uganda to Brussels, for over four decades.

Customer Reviews:
Great Stuff !!.......2005-11-30
I bought a BUNCH of these large print New York Times Crossword books for my Mom including this one. She was ardent about solving them and felt they helped her in maintaining her mental powers. I would have to agree on that. The large print really IS large and seemed too big to me at first but they were easier for her to savor and work on at her own pace. They also have puzzles you can subscribe to and receive through the mail. I was surprized and delighted during a visit to see that she and a friend worked on them together. They're a terrific resource for an aging parent and well worth the price for the stimulation !!
P.S. Closer inspection of the seller's listings don't mention the books being written in so no eraser is necessary.
Does it come with an eraser?.......2001-08-28
Not really a review as such -- just a comment. Laughing hysterically over offer of "used" crossword book...hopefully they were done in pencil and come with a large eraser!!
Sunday puzzle any day.......2000-04-17
Interesting and challenging, with good themes, the 50 contemporary puzzles are what one hopes to find Sunday mornings. There are 50 old puzzles in the beginning of the book in chronological order from the l940's through the eighties, and the language and style in the earliest ones is unfamiliar and daunting. By working them from the latest back, I was able to learn a little as I went, and enjoyed them more. Overall, a good head rub.
Book Description
This book brings together conceptual and empirical material in a systematic way. It provides readers with a basis for understanding mergers and acquisitions and corporate restructuring that are introduced into every session of Congress. The volume provides a complete review of takeovers and mergers in practice, M&A's in theory and practice, the strategic perspective of valuation, restructuring, M&A strategies and strategies for creating value. For CEOs, COOs, CFOs and other top level executives.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Subject... Boring Book.......2005-02-08
The subject of this book is quite interesting and the knowledgable authors add many insights into the field of Mergers and Aquisitions. However, the book is poorly written and designed. Simply opening the book will show colorless pages and bland figures that perfectly reflect the tone and content within. There is also a surprising number of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors (something I should not expect if I'm paying over $100 for a book).
Solid text to introduce this topic - readable and helpful.......2004-09-30
The fourth edition came out in 2003 and I am not familiar with earlier editions. In my view, this is a very good text. In its nearly 700 pages, it provides a solid and comprehensive overview of this interesting and important topic. Obviously, no textbook can be both a survey of the topic and provide complete coverage of every topic. This book goes deep enough that students being introduced to this topic will find plenty to work on and get enough information to develop a feel for all that is involved in changing corporate control and ownership structure for any number of reasons.
The book has 22 chapters in six parts. The six parts are:
1)Takeovers and Mergers in Practice
2)M&As - Theories and Empirical Tests
3)Valuation - The Strategic Perspective
4)Restructuring
5)M&A Strategies
6)Strategies for Creating Value
There are many end of chapter questions and dozens of mini-cases in the book. Plus, there are online resources for students available.
The book provides references at the end of each chapter for more in depth study, a glossary at the end, and an index.
This is a solid text that can also be read by the general reader interested in this topic.
I expected more.......2001-09-24
Considering the reputation of the primary author, I found the book to be ponderous to read and seemingly focused more on what the authors wanted to discuss than what might be really useful to students and those practicing M&A. The authors should have sought a more appropriate balance between theory and practice. This tome is weighted in favor of theory. It seems to spend more time addressing societal issues and issues of government policy than addressing the mechanics of how to plan for and implement transactions. In fact, only the last few pages of the book deal superficially with an approach to doing M&A.
The book also assumes substantial knowledge of accounting, finance and economics on the part of the reader. The dearth of examples also hinders the readers ability to readily understand how to apply complex concepts explained in torturous paragraphs of prose. It would have been helpful to use more illustrations to communicate concepts that are difficult for those of us that don't have Phds to understand.
Thankfully, there are other books that are far more helpful in explaining both theory and application of M&A. I have found Mckinsey's book on Measuring and Managing Valuation to be a much better guide to understanding how to apply complex valuation techniques. Integration methodology is well explained in Marks and Clemente's Winning at Mergers. For an excellent detailed overview of M&A, see Depamphlis Mergers Acquisitions and Other Restructuring or Weston's other, more recent book on M&A.
Largely Disappointing.......2001-05-12
The book is really only useful for those interested in a literature survey, discussion of public policy, and somewhat tedious discussion of theoretical concepts.
Written by academics for academics!!!.......2001-04-14
On balance, this book provides a good overview of the subject and of recent academic studies. However, it is often theoretical and "ivory-towerish." There is relatively little that really instructs the reader about transactions are actually done. A great deal of time is devoted to discussing why they occur, but little practical insight is provided as to the challenges and issues that must be resolved. This book may be suitable for someone who is curious and interested in reading about M&A but provides little guidance for those interested in learning how to undertake transactions.
