5 out of 5 stars Who do we need to bother to get this book back in print?.......2004-02-08

I'll come right out with it. I love Jack Handey.

Is he insane? Fortunately, yes.

Is he outrageous? Ridiculous? Completely outside? ABSOLUTELY!!!

Which is why we ALL love him! And which is also why we keep a stack of "Deep Thoughts," "Deeper Thoughts," "Deepest Thoughts," and "Fuzzy Memories," in the guest bathroom. If your 'guest' is "PLU" (People Like Us), we know they're not going to be coming out of that bathroom any time soon... And when they do come out? Expect them to be ready for any and all things deep!

(You may also just want to check and make sure they don't steal your books. You don't know them THAT well... And besides, YOU still steal things sometimes...)

THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT LITMUS TEST!

Pay Careful Attention: What if someone you know doesn't 'get' Jack Handey? (Wha?)

Sadly, it HAS happened... In Papua New Guinea, once; He's not real popular on Easter Island, either. He doesn't translate well in Rapa Nui, apparently. Anyway, just LISTEN, WILL YOU?! JEEZ!

Tell you what. You run across someone who doesn't 'get' Jack Handey? You should be grateful. You just potentially saved yourself untold grief, time, and effort by weeding out an acquaintance who, as it turns out, IS NOT "PLU." You may now, with a clear conscience AND in proud possession of a highly evolved sense of humor, my friend, eliminate this person now and forever from your Christmas Card List!

Simplify your life. (Who WAS that person, anyway?! And who invited them?!?) (And by now, HELLO! Who Cares?)

Which brings us now to the most IMPORTANT point:

The Book of Postcards is apparently "out of print." This is a most unfortunate massive BUMMER. I would like to suggest that we put some pressure on Universal Press Syndicate, or Jack himself (but in a really nice, cool way, like, "Hey, dude, we really like your stuff! So, can you, like, talk to those folks in Kansas City about printing some more postcards? 'Cause they're all out, Man!!!) Because, Damn it! Somebody's GOT to do SOMETHING!!!

How about these classics:

"If you ever drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, 'cause man, they're gone!" (Genius.)

Or, how about the one where he says he doesn't think clowns are funny - in fact they're kinda scary. (He doesn't know why, but he thinks it might go back to the time he went to the circus and a clown killed his dad!) That's Utterly Priceless!!! (I can NOT tell that with a straight face.)

Or how about, "It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a BIGGER man to LAUGH at that man!" Brilliant.

In closing, I just want to say that I wholeheartedly agree with Jack on one of his more serious issues: It really is too bad that whole families have to be torn apart by something as simple as wild dogs.

Jack Handey was my best friend, Ed Olson,'s favorite humorist.

Ed Olson, who left this planet August 16, 2003 (but will never ever be forgotten), was a HOOT, and he LOVED Deep Thoughts.

For Ed's birthday, year before last, I made color copies of my 12 favorite Deep Thoughts postcards (And the guy at Kinko's didn't even bug me, I couldn't believe it!) and turned them into wine labels for a CASE OF Santa Margherita PINOT GRIGIO!!! He LOVED it!!! (Not a bad idea, Jack - you should think about it!)

Anyway, on behalf of Ed and myself, and everyone who is curious, or just plain wants these postcards REAL BAD: Jack Handey, YOU RULE!

So LET'S GO, PEOPLE!!

And hey, how about you, Marta? Come on! Whose side are you on, anyway? Let's make Universal Press Syndicate or whomever is standing in the way see the light and BRING THE POSTCARDS BACK!!!! :)

Think about the mail carriers everywhere who can experience a belly laugh in their long and often arduous day of delivering otherwise boring mail. Let's give them postcards WORTH READING FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!

(I hear Jack writes all Steve Martin's material now, by the way.)

So that's about it. Is anybody else warm in here?

:)

5 out of 5 stars I have never laughed so hard........1999-08-22

These postcards are the absolute funniest you will EVER see. I just read through them and laugh when i need a pick-me-up and my long-distance friends can't get anough of them. Jack Handey is hysterical!

Book Description

Photographing children and babies constitutes a large portion of the business in most portrait studios. Working with young children who are nervous or uncooperative can present a formidable challenge for the photographer. Beginning with infants, this book discusses the specific details of photographing children at every stage of growth, addressing age-specific psychology and attention spans. Technical information on posing and lighting, including props, backgrounds, low- and high-key lighting, and special effects, is supplemented with advice on making children comfortable and cooperative. Special attention is given to how sights and sounds will soothe a baby and get his or her attention for the best portrait.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for Studio photographers.......2005-10-26

I love this book. The pages are packed with great words of wisdom for anyone working with small children and trying to get that perfect picture. The language is clear and easy to understand and I'm finding it to be a GREAT resource in my own studio!

1 out of 5 stars For stock studio photographers only.......2002-12-18

I read the reviews on this book and decided to pick it up along with Vik Orenstein's. Orenstein's is definitely the better choice for my style. I have been photographing children for ten years and was looking for some fresh poses and ideas, and I found neither in Sholin's book. The shots are all poorly lit, boring stock studio photographs, like you would expect from a mall photo mill. If you are just getting into the children's portrait business and want to be more than just a stand-and-shoot photographer, this is NOT the book for you. For ideas on developing an interesting, fresh style of your own, choose Orenstein's book. I am returning this one because I have no use for it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for A Children's Studio.......2002-03-11

This book is truly a must for any studio who works with children. Marilyn's book was in depth and gives you step by step instructions on everything from lighting, creativity, and stocking your dressing room for your clients. I refer to this book time and time again and would not be without it...

5 out of 5 stars Studio Portrait Photography of Children and Babies.......2002-02-13

This is the book to have. It was VERY descriptive on lighting, techniques, and capturing children. I have learned more from this book than all the other books I have read. Marilyn is a true inspiration. I will be looking forward to reading more of her books.

5 out of 5 stars Studio Portrait Photography of Children and Babies.......2000-08-17

We are just starting a home-based photography business, and I have purchased many books of various subjects relating to photograhy in the past few months. This is by far one of the best yet, and the only one I've read entirely. The author shares many photographs that give you great ideas for props and poses. The text is very easy to understand, and therefore, not so overwhelming to those of us trying to cram in so much information during the startup of a business. There are suggestions for photographing and dealing with the different stages and ages of babies and children. The discussion on studio equipment is simple and to the point. She takes you through the steps of a portrait sitting, which was very helpful. I could go on and on, but I won't. It's a very good book, and I enjoyed reading it!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Tale.......2004-02-10

Very few stories of the makings of films can be described as truly dramatic, dramatic enough to form a story worth telling in its own right. Citizen Kane qualifies, as do Platoon and Once Upon a Time in America.

But all these very famous stories of dramatic productions pale in comparison to the story of the making - and reconstruction - of Abel Gance's magnificent silent epic Napoleon (1927). Brownlow, who appears to have been the prime mover behind the incredible revival of this film through the late 1970s and early 1980s, tells a story of a film epic that was practically ignored in the hype over the new hi-tech "talkies".
Abel Gance's "Napoleon" suffered indignity after indignity as it was first butchered by money-minded studios in America wanting to suppress foreign creativity, then turned into a patched-up sound film, and finally totally forgotten by all but a very few; the remaining fragments of film rotting in film archives throughout the world.

Were it not for young Brownlow's rediscovery of the film in little 9.5mm abridgements in his local store in Englkand, then it is likely that the film "Napoleon" would never have been rediscovered. Thanks to Brownlow's virtual obsession over this film, he broke through all barriers to find more and more of the film, finally being the main force in its reconstruction. Through it all we hear of vast and distasteful conspiracies against Brownlow's work; of archives jealously guarding the remains of the film uintil they literally rot away; of obsessive - and cruel - collectors determined to do the same; of massive commercial intereasts, heartless and money-minded, threatening to strangle the project several times over - of painstaking restoration with mylar tape and scissors.

Beyond that, we hear of triumphs; the exciting discoveries, over and over, of new pieces of film; new sequences whose genius was a little too much for their timel; of the incredible reception the film received in 1981-3 with the new restorations, especially the french restoration of 1982; and above all, the moving reminisces of visiting the aging, seriously embittered, and very egotistical Abel Gance himself!

This book is about as dramatic as stories about the making of a film can get. Although Brownlow descends into abject worship fairly often - Abel Gance seems like a rather unpleasant fellow to me - and his obsession sometimes gets a little disturbing and "on the nose", there can be no doubting his enthusiasm and joy in his task. We feel for him every time he discovers a never-before-seen sequence of incredible genius; or when he finds that a certain hostile collector has let his copy of the film rot to pieces. It is a real adventure story; a story about a film, that goes way, way beyond mere box office receipts and the Hollywood process. This is a real story of guerilla film restoration!

Of course, the book also is a wonderful introduction and companion to the film itself - already released on DVD in Australia and England, and shortly to be released on DVD in the US. My own opinion of the film is that it is a film more full of great scenes, than being a great film overall. Not surprising since Gance originally wanted to do a Peter Jackson and film a series of six films simultaneously! This film was only meant as a mere introduction. I also agree with Brownlow that the film's major failing is self-indulgence. Some of the snazzier special effects seem to overshadow the story - again, a bit like Peter Jackson...

Please note this; that the versions released on VHS and DVD are NOT the full restorations. The US Coppola Version of 1981 is a rather cut-down version of Brownlow's UK Version. It has also been speeded up to 24 fps, making Napoleon a little jittery. The UK version will probably never be reloeased on video or DVD, which is a terrible pity, even though I like the tinting (well, maybe the red is a little too strong) and the Coppola soundtrack which are only found on the US version.

The real pity is that the SECOND Brownlow restoratioin of 5h 13m, the French version, will probably also never be released This was made shortly after the UK version, with music by Carl Davis. That is a version of Napoleon I would like to see! (though, again, lacking the tinting of the US version.)

One final point about the DVD/VHS: the triptychs, which occur at the end, look pretty bad on a TV screen. This is because the only choice is to shrink the image to fit like a "letterbox" image in the screen., Inevitably this damages the impact of the last sequence.

                    Book Description

Piecing together 200 years of convent history, this engaging narrative tells the story of the nuns of Santa Cristina della Fondazza--gifted singers, instrumentalists, and composers who used music to circumvent ecclesiastical authority and to forge links with the world beyond convent walls. Craig Monson reconstructs the daily lives of Italian nuns, often in their own words, and relates their musical life to the broad social context in which it unfolded. He introduces a virtually unknown nun composer, relating her family history and how the convent allowed her creativity to flower. The study is meticulously researched, marvelously detailed, and entertaining to read.
In sixteenth- and early-seventeenth-century Bologna, approximately one-seventh of the entire female population lived behind convent walls. Santa Cristina became home for a number of gifted women musicians, many from among the upper classes, who sought "respectable" musical careers. Monson documents the struggle of these women as they fought to maintain their musical and ritual traditions in the face of persistent opposition from church officials. Figuring prominently in the story of Santa Cristina is Lucrezia Vizzana (1590-1662), Bologna's only published nun composer, who entered the convent at the age of eight.
This study is as much about social and cultural history as it is about music. The discussion ranges widely beyond musicology to draw upon art, social and political history, labor history, theology, and gender studies.

                        5 out of 5 stars A great campaign sourcebook.......2003-12-30

I was sifting through my AD&D collection the other day, looking for a suitable campaign for my players. They have mid-level characters, and I have ambitions to someday put them through the H-series Bloodstone modules. Those are very high-level super-modules, some of the best ever produced by TSR, and pretty hard to find as well. (Sigh!) But it is too soon.

Looking through FR9: The Bloodstone Lands sourcebook, however, caused a lightbulb to turn on. FR9 is set some years after the events in the H-series modules, which forced me to 'roll-back' history a bit. No problem.

My unsuspecting characters traveled through a (relatively) peaceful, innocent, and united Kingdom of Damara. They traveled through the Galena Mountains to the lonely frontier town of Palischuk, civilization's last outpost in the Vaasa wastes. Why? I posed the town as being a 'bleeding edge' trading post between humans, barbarians, and humanoids. All kinds of exotics could be found there... rare spell components, magic items, and much more!

I had my daughter build a tabletop model of the town with the buildings from an old cannibalized FR8 - Cities of Mystery boxed set. After some hijinks with a Deck of Many Things the characters found, the party arrived in Palischuk. I let them spend the day, shopping to their hearts' content. They ran into Boutros the Half-Ogre, sometimes ally, sometimes adversary, and previously thought dead. [Little did they know that Castle Perilous was being assembled to the west... and that a mixed humanoid army was marching on Palischuk as a prelude to Zhengyi the Witch-King's designs on Damara itself. Boutros was gathering information.]

The party was awakened in the middle of the night by Druwezza, their thief. On her nightly prowl, she'd discovered that the city watch was being assembled to repel some kind of attack. They looked worried.

The characters dressed, and offered their services to defend the town. The situation was less than ideal. The town was walled, but certainly was never designed to withstand a concerted attack, which was what the residents were facing now. A growing number of people were gathering at the gates, clamoring to be allowed to leave. Most of the Magic-Users Teleported away. The high priest of Tyr -- a blind Tarl Desanea protecting this frontier outpost in his last years -- made some forward progress in calming the crowd. The party's bard, Thoumann Othellit, assisted by recounting inspiring tales and legends to the panicked townspeople.

The druid, Festan, sped through the night sky to the west in the shape of an owl, looking for the humanoid army marching on Palischuk. Evana Vega the elf warrioress, prepared her archer position at the top of the tower of Tyr. Stalith, the party's battle leader, worked with Tarl in preparations.

Festan located the humanoid army, disturbingly organized and equipped, 700 strong. Mostly orcs, with several ogres and two hill giants acting as siege equipment. A large, and uncannily intelligent ogre led the troops. Festan sped back on whispering wings, and hour ahead of the dawn and the threatening army. The town was as ready as it would be.

The army stopped 120 yards ahead of the main gates and send a mounted orc forward to deliver the demand: Deliver the riches of this town or suffer the consequences. The bard, using his Eyes of Charming, captivated to orc and pumped information from him. Very alarming was the realization that a second, more powerful humanoid army was waiting two days away in reserve.

The ogre leader, furious at watching his messenger willingly enter the town and disappear, began the attack. The force split in two, one group attacking the gates. The other group marched to the opposite side with the two hill giants, who bombarded the walls with rocks. This was frustrated by the priests of Tyr, who plugged the gaps with Walls of Fire.

The party, made invisible by Dust of Disappearance, scattered to harass the army in their different ways. Festan started the long preparations for an Insect Plague. Kavitt the mage, flying invisible, peppered the massed troops with Fireballs, Confusion, and the like. Thoumann the bard frustrated the orcs climbing the walls at the front with Stinking Clouds and Flaming Sphere spells. Evana in the tower filled the Hill Giants with arrows. Stalith, invisible, attacked a running ogre, and got sprayed with black blood for his trouble.

Though the attack from the back was still frustrated by the Walls of Fire, the orcs at the front of the town pushed the defenders back into the town, fighting in the streets. Stalith charged the orc archers at the rear, who saw a partly visible wraith(?). Druweeza had up until now been getting into position for a backstab at the ogre leader... Struck, delivering a painful blow. The leader lashed out, seeking his unseen assailant.

The rear orc group charged into the city, exploiting a gap created by the one surviving hill giant... only to eat a Lightning Bolt cast by Kavitt. The town was pierced on both sides, yet the attack was faltering. The orcs in the city found themselves cut off from reinforcements by additional Stinking clouds, and cut off from direction by an insect plague afflicting their leadership. Stalith, who had been scattering the archers, found himself fleeing that same insect plague. He spied the ogre leader running for the town, and slew him with a sword stroke. More magic cast from the air turned the tide, and the orcs turned and fled the city.

The town was badly damaged. The walls to the rear were rubble, and the front was in flames. With yet another humanoid army threatening attack, the decision was made to burn the dead -- friend and foe -- and abandon the town.

The characters will surely leave the area, adventuring in other lands. But when the time comes to introduce them to the H-series modules, I have a 'hook' to easily pull them back into the Bloodstone lands. They'll never forget the Defense and Abandonment of Palischuk!

5 out of 5 stars The best in the series.......2000-06-22

Welcome to Icewind Dale! The Bloodstone Lands, of Vaasa and Damara, are the infamous realms where blood and power reign supreme. As featured in the H series of modules, this land of ice, hope and monstrous terrors is the ideal setting for high-level campaigns. It's here that Orcus, the Prince of the Undead, once reigned supreme. This book features details on culture and history, recent events (summarizing the H modules), foreign relations, cities and ruins, races and monsters, dungeons, famous personages, 8 outlined adventures, and more! An instant classic, and by far the most in-demand book in the series, with good reason.

5 out of 5 stars an extremely well done overview of the bloodstone lands.......1999-10-03

Bob Salvatore provides the reader with all the information you need to run a full scale roleplaying campaign in this area of the forgotten realms, giving a summary of the recent events in this region (see h1-h4) and describing the major places, lands, cities and NPCs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book; stands on its own.......2001-10-24

While you can use this workbook with the text, it is also very useful by itself. In fact, I didn't know it was a companion to a book until after I bought it.

The topics are covered in enough detail to answer all those small questions I have. In addition, it's the only book I've found that leads the reader through the details of building a simple prepayment model. There are some advanced questions in the book for more mathematically inclined readers.

4 out of 5 stars Limited, but Very Good Nonetheless.......2001-07-08

This workbook was written as a companion to "Mortgage-Backed Securities" by Davidson and Herskovitz. Frankly, I think this book works much better on its own and I would recommend Fabozzi's "Handbook of Mortgage-Backed Securities" instead as a general guide to the subject. The workbook confines itself to a limited number of topics but it covers these very well. Beginning with simple cash flow and yield calculations, the authors move on to provide guidance on (simple!) prepayment modelling, basic structuring, the yield curve and regulatory tests. The approach is attractively practical, and I think of this text as a useful secret weapon to have up one's sleeve.
