Fashion and Fun.......2006-11-05
This is a great book if you're looking for an overview of fashions from 1909 to 1930, concentrating on clothes available from Sears catalogs of the period. The book includes women's, men's, children's, and infant's clothing. The text is entertaining to read. I was a little disappointed that there were not more examples of fashion in the 20's. Nevertheless, it is an informative and fun book to refer to if you have an interest in period fashion
Roaring twenties revealed........2006-10-11
A great source of information on the cloths worn by ordinary people of this time period.
Pity people don't dress like this anymore.
I use this one.......2006-09-13
This is a very useful source book for every day clothing, particularly things like men's clothes, kid's outfits, maid uniforms, and other things that aren't the high fashion clothing that many books feature. I design theater costumes, and have found this very helpful.
Everyday Fashions of the 20's.......2006-03-15
Great book. I used it to come up with a 20's custume for a party. Loved the book. Great graphics.
The" Bees-Knees"!.......2003-08-27
If you love fashion from the 1920's or just saw "Chicago" and would like more background on it,this is a worthwhile book to flip through. Some the pics are not the best quality and childrens clothes are only on one page. However, You really do,get an idea of what the average person wore back then, which may surprise some readers. All in all, A decent book for fashion history buffs.

Book Description
BIG THOUGHTS FROM AN EVEN BIGGER CAT
GARFIELD is a true Aristotle of cats, pondering such tough questions as: How many plates of lasagna can a cat consume in a single sitting? That's a lot of food for thought, but you can bet this feline philosopher will gobble his way to an answer--and still find room for dessert! It's nothing less than side-splitting fun, so don't miss out as GARFIELD thinks (and eats) BIGGER than ever before!

Garfield RULES!.......2002-09-14
Garfield is the best!
i have read all his books and can't stop reading them.
cause Garfield is #1!
This particulary book is so far the funniest one i have ever read.
GARFIELD RULES!.......2000-06-24
Everybody out there keep buying Garfield books! They can be worth a lot of money someday and can become collector's items! I'm always going to keep all of mine so when I have kids they can read them!
I cant stop reading.......1998-10-29
I loved theis book because it has graet jokes. This book has a nice use of words. You wont stop laughing it gots lots of good jokes. And you have to read this book its graet for children of all ages.
A great book; only missing one thing...........1998-06-12
...And that thing is COLOR! Call me crazy, but I hypothesize that daily comics sections that are still in b/w are rather primitive, and the colors in the comics (especially in Garfield) are a small part of the context. So, I think the next Garfield book - #33 Garfield Pigs Out (I guess that's going to be the next title) should be in full color, rather than black and white like its predecessors.
This is a grrrrrrreeeeeeeeaaaaaatttttttttt book!.......1998-04-27
"Garfield Thinks Big" is a book with lots of laughs inside it. Garfield does lots of things to annoy people. He sheds all over, kicks Odie off of and onto the table, puts snowballs in Jon's pants, and makes fun of dogs. He eats continuously and sleeps whenever he can. He hates Mondays, diets, and family get togethers. He can never get enough lasagna and he loves desserts. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Fresh Angle on the Oscars.......2002-03-11
I like movies, but I am not a movie buff or an avid watcher of the Oscar telecast. Yet, I was doing some research and browsed through the magazine, The Economist, where I came across a most interesting table, reprinted from Emanuel Levy's Oscar Fever: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards. The table classified all Oscar-nominated and Oscar-winning films, showing a clear preference for serious-message movies, like "Schindler's List." "Rainman" or "The Lost Weekend" on the one hand, and historical epics, such as "Gladiator," "Ben Hur," or "Lawrence of Arabia" on the other. I was surprised to read that. According to Mr. Levy, the Academy has shown consistent bias against the comedy genres and comedy performers. I never realized that Chaplin or Cary Grant had never won a legit Oscar for their comic work, and that Jack Lemmon was nominated for comedies, but finally won his Best Actor Oscar for a serious drama, "Save the Tiger." These biases piqued my interest and I picked up Oscar Fever, which contains a lot of interesting information. I highly recommend this meticulously researched book for anyone interested in popular culture, not just Hollywood lore.
A lively and comprehensive history of the Oscars.......2002-03-09
Emanuel Levy's OSCAR FEVER is a treasure trove of Academy Award history and lore. It is a sociological study in the best sense in that it tells us quite a bit about our culture's functions and dysfunctions over nearly 75 years--how the Academy has awarded, or not, actresses, minorities, message pictures, or trendy-blockbuster films. Yet, the book entertains at the same time. Unlike most sociologists, Levy writes with assurance and panache. What is it exactly that makes the Academy Awards so special? In an age when most everything seems stage-managed, overblown, and overdone, perhaps it is the sheer spontaneity and unpredictability of the Oscars that most grab us. Who can forget Jack Palance's one-armed push-ups? The audacity of Marlon Brando? OSCAR FEVER tells many behind-the-scenes stories of life imitating art, which is perhaps what most interests us: the egos and politics behind Oscar. For example, ALL ABOUT EVE, the most-nominated film of all time (along with TITANIC), caused a real-life cat fight between Bette Davis and Anne Baxter over the Best Actress/Supporting Actress categories. ("The title isn't 'All about Margo Channing' Anne Baxter maintained.) Neither won that year--nor did Gloria Swanson (SUNSET BOULEVARD). The Oscar went to Judy Holliday for BORN YESTERDAY! One look at the amazingly crowded and comprehensive index shows OSCAR FEVER is both a reference source and history--in its way, Everything You Always Wanted to Know about the Oscars but Were Afraid to Ask. This book takes popular culture seriously and, in doing so, is insightful, refreshing, and original--in short, a treat.
Good Read for Oscar Fans.......2002-03-08
I just finished reading the paperback edition of Emanuel Levy's Oscar Fever: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards. There are a few errors in the book which is unfortunate, but on balance it's a great read, and really informative. I learned much more than I expected from Levy's analysis of the Oscar as the most coveted, glamorous, and controversial fixture of American show business, not just movies.
The book chronicles the full range of prejudices, nostalgia, and politics exhibited by the Academy voters over the past seven decades, and takes a pretty detailed look at why movies win. The statistics that Levy provides about the age of the winners, the difference between male and female artists, the underrepresentation of black and other ethnic minorities, the discrimination against women directors, and the type of movies and screen roles that win Oscars, are fascinating. Levy finds some pretty consistent trends and documents them.
I have no doubts that Oscar Fever (a good title) will be kept in print forever, as it provides the most comprehensive and knowledgeable discussion of the Oscars as a unique Hollywood and now global phenomenon. In short, I recommend the book to anyone interested in understanding what's contagious about American pop culture.
On a scale of 1 to 5, I rank it 4.
Oscar goes to Levy's Oscar Fever.......2002-03-04
I am an Academy Awards fan; I love watching them and reading about them. I am also a fan of Emanuel Levy's book Oscar Fever. It's not just another dictionary or a chronology of winners and losers. It's a deep, extremely intelligent, even-handed and perceptive study of a very complicated institution. I also like the fact that the approach is unique and original - looking at the awards from a socio-historical perspective, from the perspective of what the
Academy Awards can tell us about the world we live in not just who won. Levy organizes the book thematically rather than the standard chronology like every other book on the Oscars - this lets him delve quite deeply into each of his points. Levy's insights on gender and age are amazing - particularly his analysis of women. Go figure the logic of the Academy - Sally Field has won two Oscars out of two nominations; the great Garbo never took home a statuette. How could Ganhdi have won over ET - one of Spielberg's best -- or Gladiator over Traffic? Oscar Fever goes a long way in answering explaining the politics of the Oscar. It's a great book -- definitive I would say. It gets top marks from me.
Shoddy research, bad writing.......2001-08-09
I can only echo what others have written about this shoddy excuse for a study of one of American's most fascinating phenomena--the yearly race for the Oscar. Levy should be ashamed of the plethora of factual errors--and that the errors are inconsistent in content from one page to another (as another critic has pointed out) points the blame not only at him but at the [bad] job that passes for copy and proof editing at Continuum. In addition, his style is awkard and uninteresting--appropriate neither to an academic audience nor to a general reader. And his analyses are obvious and lacking in anything truly insightful. "Inside Oscar," though out of date, remains a much livelier and more thoughtful study of the Oscars--we can only hope a revision of it is in the works. In the meantime, skip this..., irritating book.

Oscar Time.......2003-01-14
Once again, it's Oscar season. I just finished reading Emanuel Levy's Oscar Fever: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards, and I found a stellar overview of Hollywood's exercise in self-congratulation. What's good about the book is that Levy identifies the motives behind the founding of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927 as a desire to establish the film industry as "a respectable, legitimate institution."
Reading Oscar Fever is like reading the history of the sound era since the two events overlap. Additionally, Levy provides many facts and anecdotes that make up for a fascinating read of America's most glamorous industries. It's the kind of book that film buffs would want to keep on their shelves for future references.
Those interested in Oscar trivia and gossip will not be disappointed by the book, either. Oscar Fever is the kind of book that could be read as light entertainment as well as a serious expose of the one of the most popular media events in the world.
Of all Hollywood books I read over the past few years, Oscar Fever is one of the most illuminating. For all those reasons, I'm giving the film the highest rank, 5.
Oscar History at its Best.......2002-12-19
Emanuel Levy's Oscar Fever: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards is a fascinating account of the most popular movie event in the world.
Scrutinizing the awards from their very beginnings, Levy appears to know everything which is worth knowing about the Oscars. His book combines both serious and light-anecdotal analysis of the Oscars, which makes for a wonderful reading.
Levy draws on aa wide variety of sources of Hollywood history, providing intriguing factoids to supplement his examination of the effects of age, gender, and race on the film industry. For example, he details the discrimination against women as well as against artists of color in Oscar's history up until the last decade.
I felt that no sociological or political issue related to Hollywood and the Oscars remained unanswered in this wonderfully researched and written book.
Of all the Oscar books I have read so far, Oscar Fever is decidedly the most comprehensive and illuminating. I give it the highest rank (five) one could give a movie book.
Oscar gets serious.......2002-12-01
Emanuel Levy's Oscar Fever: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards is the only serious chronicle of the Oscars, placing them in their broader socio-political contexts, from 1927 to the present.
Oscar Fever (a very good title, in terms of the nasty and fevrish camaigns last year) provides the most comprehensive examination of the Oscars as a uniquely American phenomenon, now embraced by the entire world.
The systematic data that Levy provides about the difference between male and female winners and nominees, the underrepresentation of black and Latino artists, the biases against women directors, such as Barbra Streisant (The Prince of Tides) and the type of movies and screen roles that win Oscars, are fascinating.
I recommend the book to those readers who would like to know more about the Oscars specifically or American pop culture in general.
Deeply Disapointing.......2002-07-13
I have been a fan of the Academy Awards for many years, and have always been intrested in history and the politics of the Oscars.
Emanuel Levy's Book is not what it claims to be, it is not a look at the History and Politics of the Academy Awards, more a chance for Mr. Levy inforce his views on Oscar winning films on you. I did not find the book informative at all, in fact in most cases he is just critising films, this is not the History of the Academy Awards.
As well as this poor writing style, Mr. Levy's knowledge of the Academy Awards seems to be shockingly low, in fact I can't be sure if he did any research apart from visiting the academy website. At one point in the book, he comments on how he thinks the academy gave Best Score of 1991 to Beauty and The Beast because Alan Menken had died of Aids. What A load of Rubbish!, Mr. Menken is alive and fine in fact he won 4 further Oscars in 1992 and 1995, It was his co-songwriter Howard Ashman who died of Aids. How can an a author make a mistake of this level?
All I can say is I was most disappointed and some places just annoyed

useless.......2004-05-05
already lots of guides available for newbs on the internet. you just gotta look. this piece of s*** is useless unless ur a rich person who just wants to waste their money on a guide. don't buy this unless you are willing to get a paper document instead of an online document
Excellent for Noobs that get Owned.......2003-08-27
This is an excellent book for Newbies in the original Counterstrike game that are constantly getting owned by Online Counterstrike masters such as myself. Granted the game has not been officially released, it is without question, that Newcomers or constantly owned noobs that I own on a regular basis read up before playing the actual game. The book goes in depth on various strategies on an individual level, and team(squal level) tactics. I have played in various Counterstrike tournaments and I am a renound Counterstrike gamer. I must say, this strategy guide could not have been written better. The details and the precise pictorials on each page provides an in depth analysis of begginer and advanced strategies to make descent players out of Noobs(CS terminology for beginner players that I own, or defeat with ease). I have had the privelege to play Condition Zero before it was released, and though it runs on Steam, and does lag, it is definitely going to be considered "Thee Online Game." From my vast experience from playing Counterstrike and winning various tournaments, it would behoove beginners to buy this strategy guide before the game comes out, to gain a slight advantage over their peers, or noob counter-parts. You've probably heard of me, my counterstrike name is RaiderX, and I am from a Hawaiian born clan called S0D, or Squad of Death(pcgods at hotmail dot com). As for advance masters such as myself(probably only about 10 other renound league players and programmers who have meticulously tested the game), there is no need for a strategy guide. But for the majority of newcomers and wannabee masters, this is a must have.
nice book.......2003-08-02
i saw heard about this bokk when my friends told me about it. they said it was really nice, yet i dont realy know myself. they say it adds to the gameplay but eliminates the fun when you know all this stuff. but i recomend this book, if my friend likes it a lot of other people would too.
Book Description
Richard Marcinko's explosive #1 New York Times bestselling autobiography, Rogue Warrior, and four blockbuster Rogue Warrior novels have earned him fame for his raucous, no-holds-barred style. Now, blasting other business guides out of the water, Marcinko draws on his remarkable experience as a Navy commando and creator of the legendary SEAL TEAM SIX to apply his Ten Commandments of Special Warfare to the challenges of business and everyday life. A sampling:
- I will always lead you from the front, not the rear.
- I shall punish thy bodies because the more thou sweetest in training, the less thou bleedest in combat.
- Verily, thou art not paid for thy methods, but for thy results, by which meaneth thou shalt kill shine enemy by any means available before he killeth you.
Using his own war stories, plus case studies of Fortune 500 companies and smaller businesses, Marcinko now clarifies the simple--but profound--leadership principles that have made him an extraordinary success, both in and out of the military.

Customer Reviews:
Fun read, but dangerous advice for use in the workplace..........2007-08-19
OK, up front I'll admit I had a fun time reading this... Leadership Secrets of the Rogue Warrior: A Commando's Guide to Success by Richard Marcinko. It's not your typical leadership book with polished words and concepts. It's raw, gritty, and will likely offend a few readers. But I'd think twice about trying to apply this "warrior mentality" to your business life. Odds are you'll end up hated, fired, or in jail...
Contents: The Rogue Warrior's Ten Commandments of SpecWar; Introduction, Chapters 1 through 10 - The Ten Commandments; Epilogue; A Note on Sources
The ten commandments are: 1) I am the War Lord and the wrathful God of Combat and I will always lead you from the front - not the rear. 2) I will treat you all alike - just like s***. 3) Thou shalt do nothing I will not do first, and thus will you be created Warriors in My deadly image. 4) I shall punish thy bodies because the more thou sweatest in training, the less thou bleedest in combat. 5) Indeed, if thou hurteth in thy efforts and thou suffer painful dings, then thou are Doing It Right. 6) Thou hast not to like it - thou hast just to do it. 7) Thou shalt Keep It Simple, Stupid. 8) Thou shalt never assume. 9) Verily, thou art not paid for thy methods, but for thy results, by which meaneth thou shalt kill thine enemy by any means available before he killeth you. 10) Thou shalt, in thy Warrior's Mind and Soul, always remember My ultimate and final Commandment: There Are No Rules - Thou Shalt Win at All Costs.
I had one misconception corrected quickly. I thought the "Rogue Warrior" was a fictional character used in novels written by Marcinko. I didn't know until I read this book that he really *was* the Rogue Warrior and was a successful covert soldier, adept at many types of warfare. Based on his experience and training, he distilled his beliefs into what you read here. From the perspective of someone going to war with a fellow fighter, this is exactly the type of person I'd want by my side... ruthless, creative, and willing to do whatever is needed to win and stay alive. But does that really translate to the business and personal lives of the readers? I hope not...
After each of his explanations of the principle being discussed, he gives an example of how it applies to war and how it applies to business. Generally, some of the concepts are true... train hard, get results, etc. But the "win at all costs" theme is the exact attitude that ended a lot of Enron executives (as well as others) in jail. Marcinko does try and say that you have to be honorable in the way you approach this, but it's normally followed by "breaking the rules to get results". I know what that is *supposed* to mean, but in reality it comes across as the end justifying the means. The argument would be that there's a line that shouldn't be crossed, but I'd venture that for many, that line is too blurred to be used as an accurate measuring point. Buying into this philosophy in an organization would make for a ruthless and brutal workforce, and not one that I'd like to return to day after day. And I suppose in Marcinko's eyes that would make me soft and worthless... oh, well.
If I were to step onto a combat field or a dojo, I'd want to adopt this mindset. But if I step into my workplace, there's a few more things to be considered than just raw "kill the enemy before he kills you" emotion.
Really straight forward.......2006-11-27
I picked up this book after reading the reviews, and having read marcinko's strategy for success.
The clincher for me was, however, sparky999's review below.
If someone who tries to use words such as dicotomous (dichotomous), Nepolianic complex (Napoleonic Complex) and referring to Causawitz (Presumably Von Clausewitz) whilst totally messing them up is the sort of person who so desperately wants to be viewed as important end educated without actually putting the effort into being so.
Not that poor command of the english language is a crime, but attempting to use words that are usually only in the vocabulary of the highly educated, and not even bothering to check on their spelling or proper use is the sign of a person with poor attention to detail at best, and a complete fool at worst.
And in short, I thought that if this sort of person thought that Dick has no idea, then it's probably great stuff.
And I was right.
Ghandi said "Be the change you want to see in others", but Marcinko put's it a bit more succinctly saying "Lead from the front" It's not really much new, it's just a more direct delivery.
Leadership is about trust, comradeship and loyalty (Both ways) this is true in families, military units, business and even sporting teams. It's just the consequences of poor leadership are different.
i highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be the person that Gets things done. In a sentece this book says:
Get the job done to gain trust. Garner trust to create loyalty. Return loyalty to create leadership.
there is a lot more in it than that, but it's the simple and direct way he says it that grabs attention.
No nonsense is colorful and interesting.......2004-03-18
This is the first "rogue warrior" book that I have read and I was instantly hooked. The principles that the author puts forward are simple and effective, driving home the overall messages very well. This book has helped me to think differently about what I do, where I work, and how I allow people to impact my day-to-day activities. In short, the book has pointed out that YOU are the only one who is in control of your career...that through proper training and preparation, you can be ready for anything...and that true leaders disregard the political ramifications and take decisive and definative stances - in spite of the trials that they will face.
The author is rough and gruff in terms of the language he uses -- so if you are easily offended, you should probably stay away. If you can handle the strong wording, then this book may be a good choice for you to "lead the charge" and take back your career.
This is the good one............2002-03-23
Even if you are not the leader of your team/group/posse, whatever, this is a great book to help you to BECOME that leader. This is a straightahead, no nonsense book which makes you look at yourself and where you want to be, and what you want to do and best of all, makes you think. It is not an answer book, that is for sure, so be ready to think fast.
Dick is not a businessman.......2001-11-15
Sorry, but I know Mr. Marcinko (on a casual basis) and I know many of his former TEAM warriors on a more professional basis. Dick is an EXCEPTIONAL conflict commander, but this skillset does not transfer to a business environment.
As much as middle managers want to beleive (and in some cases dickweed executive management) that they are warfighters within their overblown egos...they are not. Warfighting and business are two totaly dicotomous activities.
Business, by its nature, is meant to further the business goals of an organization. War, on the converse, is designed to subjugate an enemy. Tell me, is there any commonality? Doubtful. And, if business leaders actually find common theology with 'Dick', Sun Tsu, or Causawitz, then they need to enter physco therapy as soon as possible... a serious Nepolianic complex
In war, combatants are able to achieve objects by 'any means neccessary'. This is not the case in business, if for no other reason than human decency with interject boundries... I am not a fan of any military doctrine being applied to 'making money'...wrong, wrong wrong.
Other than the core of this book. the stories are fun, but have nothing to do with business... if they do, then we (as a nation) have moved into a sorry state of "win at any cost" and, that is very depressing.
