This is a really well done book, good, systematic, well thought out instruction. It methodically takes you through the complexities of this powerful application. It makes no assumptions about your knowledge and teaches in plain, easy-to-follow language, building one technique on another using a series of lessons. The material is presented logically, encouraging the student to explore, while still keeping a clear and consistent lesson plan to guide the learner from topic to topic.

Very useful tome, certainly the best of the series and filled with non-derivative and interesting information. The book provides guidelines on the construction and development of nations in a (primarily) fantasy setting. Specific topics include, among others, geography, economics, magic, technology, and adventure hooks. Well worth the price, especially with the Amazon discount.

This is an excellent reference for DMs. It covers a wide range of information on the various facets of a nation from the political to the cultural. I particularly enjoyed the sectioned talking about all the different types of ____ocracies. It was very well written and researched.

An Excellent, Multifaceted Gaming Reference.......2006-03-29

Nation Builder combines elements of classic and contemporary roleplaying game manuals into a solid resource that will be valued by anyone planning campaigns or scenarios involving political entities. Indeed, there is such a wealth of information and material in this book, applicable to so many situations, that it is likely to be useful to almost any game milieu creator.

"In a basic or even rudimentary sort of campaign, where dungeon-stomping and monster-hacking are the be-all and end-all of action and role-playing, the existence of nations and their various characteristics are little more than a backdrop for the milieu," from the Introduction to Nation Builder, establishes the theme of this valuable book. "If that backdrop can be given greater detail, however, more intense colors, and even three dimensions, the depth and breadth of the roleplaying experience can be expanded upon commensurately. Game Masters have it within their ability to increase the enjoyment of the games in this way and to create nations that are tangible, believable, and enjoyable."

Nation Builder is designed to be a general, system-neutral gaming resource, but also contains solid appendices of rules and statistics specific to the d20 and Lejendary Adventures rules systems. Indeed, the wealth of new material for these game systems makes this book a good value for someone who subscribes to either of them. Material specific to the d20 system, for example, include five prestige classes especially suitable for nation building campaigns, including the Diplomat, High Priest, and Mercenary Commander.

If you are looking for an excellent, inspirational gaming resource, this is it. Nation Builder is useful and enjoyable and sure to be an asset that you can return to again and again.

Fun and Useful.......2006-03-28

This book is lots of fun and very useful for anyone running or designing fantasy roleplaying game campaigns. I especially like all the charts, lists, and tables, which are very reminiscent of RPG supplements from the early days. My favorite chapter, however, has got to be the one on adventure hooks, which has hundreds of ideas for adventures and encounters!

Not being a horror movie afficionado, I still found this book immensely enjoyable. Intelligently written and conversational in tone, this is more a knowledgeable overview of the horror genre than a discussion of sexuality in horror films. As the book was originally published in 1986, the focus is not diluted with the recent resurgence of horror films. Mr. Hogan's insights are detailed and entertaining on such topics as Hammer films, Barbara Steele, the gore subgenre. Included are many b/w pictures, a filmography for each chapter, a bibliography , and an index. Highly recommended for anyone remotely interested in scary movies, film in general, or those just looking for a rollicking good read.

Best book I've ever read!!!.......2007-09-30

Art is a piece of work that moves you & this book did. I laughed, I was disgusted, I even cried. This is twenty years of a band strugling though fights, overdoses, suicide attempts, mariages, deaths, prison (it's all here!). I love how the story is told by different people so you can hearing everybody's version of what happened (crazy how everybody remebers things differently). You get to hear what happened behind closed doors & what wasn't in the tabloids. It truly was an awesome read - very hard to put down!

Great book.......2007-09-18

From page one your are on a journey, as told by each memeber of the band, from the worst part of L.A. and Motley Crue's beginnings, to their rise to super stardom in the world of rock and roll. I was never much of a Crue fan when they were in their prime, but as I got older, I started to like their music and enjoyed reading about their beginning and the typical crazy road that most rock stars take.

Great book, but just a little over-embelished........2007-09-13

This book is a FUN read and I have no doubt that for the most part things went down exactly as described. However I've also read Neil Strauss' other books and while a brilliant writer, he tend to make things larger than life and more polished than they really were (read the Game especially for examples of this.) Some things in the book seem a little too "neatly" described and he glosses over some of the more negative aspects of Motley Crue (And I grew up with them and obsessively followed their press since I was in middle school.)

But definitely a thumbs up. Look forward to reading Nikki's new book for comparison.

This is a great tab book for those of us who love Crue. Covers many of their songs throughout the "decade of decadence". This is a perfect companion to the Motley Crue Greatest Hits CD.

My only complaint is that it's missing "Too young to fall in love" and the original version of "Shout at the Devil", other than that, it's perfect!

Until something more comprehensive comes out, this is your #1 Crue tab book!

I would love to have this book for my collection but I am having a hard time finding any printed copies. Seeing as this band is breaking all kinds of records with ticket sales with thier current tour "Red, White & Crue" I suspect there will be a high demand for rare out of print books like this one.
The fans demand they put more in stock so we can buy them.

although he is listed as the author of the book, i must confess that i, byron coley, was the one who actually did the deed. i was brought in at the 11th hour, when tom carson -- then music editor for the village voice -- who had contracted to write the book failed to deliver it. i was given ten days to take it from contract to manuscript and that's what happened. not eager to put my own name on the spine, i used that of my brother-in-law, mr. dwight, since i thought he might be able to use the book as extra credit for a writing class he was then taking. he did not end up using it, but the book bears his name nonetheless. interestingly, perhaps, the introductory chapter was excised by the lawyers at ballantines for being too negative. it subsequently appeared in a long gone australian fanzine. as to the qualities of the book -- well, it is the best crue bio i have read. but then, that last one was supposed to be great. and this one certainly ain't that.

The Ultimate on The Crue.......2002-07-13

Nobody did metal like the Crue. And nobody did the Crue like Billy Dwight. This former bouncer at Pearl Street nightclub in Northampton, Massachusetts brings the band to vivid life in his addition to the Monsters of Metal series. Of special interest to any reader would be the fact that Mr Dwight is now a town coucilman in Northampton - one of the most liberal towns in the entire US and certainly a community that might be shocked by the rampant sexism and homophobia that abounds in this breezy, albeit quite literary study.

I'd echo a lot of the other reader points.... it was a lot of fluff from HBS. However, some of the articles has some novel ideas that I hadn't thought of, and for that reason I would give it 3 stars. It is a selection of articles from past Harvard writers, which can indicate a certain level of professionalism. Having each article linked to a "recommended reading" suggestion has provided some interesting next books to read on the topic.

I paid full paperback price for this (a minor $15) and I would have felt better if I had paid a used book price after having read it (say $5). That should tell you what I think its worth to you.

Big name - big disappointment.......2005-05-27

I've bought a number of Harvard Business School books over the years, and I've never had reason for complaint - until now. Because this book is one big letdown.

The contents of the book follow the usual reprint pattern, more or less, consisting of a number of focused chapters by several different authors. The exception to the rule, in this instance, is that one author in particular (who also edited the book?) features several times.

Not that it makes much difference who wrote what, because the entire contents are uniformly mediocre.
Firstly there's far too much "what" you should do, and far too little "how" to do it.
Secondly, there doesn't seem to have been any attempt at all to deal with the frequent, and wholly unnecessary repetition - or sometimes contradiction - in the information on offer.
Thirdly there seems to be considerable confusion as to what is meant by the word "presentation". Thus more than one author pigeonholes their comments under sales, speeches, etc., instead of giving guidance that is useful in ANY presentation. Which wouldn't be so bad if only these "tips" weren't presented at such a high level that they are almost entirely devoid of useful detail.

The fact is that anyone with a passing knowledge of the presentations business - but without any practical experience - could have written this book. And quite likely made a better job of it.
Indeed, I have a book on "Successful Presentation Skills" (ISBN 0-7494-3259-4) which I got 2-3 years ago, which covers everything in the Harvard book, and quite a lot more, without the pointless repetitions. It also gives far more practical advice - both "how" to do things, and "why". For example, instead of merely naming different types of presentations, it identifies the five most frequent reasons for giving a presentation, and defines a basic layout for each.
Despite that, it's written by just one person. And it's cheaper!

Not very difficult to decide which book to go for, IMO.
