Fairfield Porter, the lyrical American painter of tense slices of family life, was an extraordinarily complex and conflicted person. Born in 1917, Porter finally achieved a measure of fame in the 1950s as part of the second wave of New York School artists--only to be eclipsed as a realist painter a few years later by the brashly ironic crew of pop artists.
Born into a patrician family, Porter lived most of his life on a dwindling trust fund, in a succession of sparsely furnished rural houses that he kept escaping to hang out with artists and writers in New York City. (He also wrote poetry and art criticism.) Although his political sympathies led him to dream of being a great muralist, his discovery of the intimate domestic scenes of Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard proved the key to his mature style.
Porter's immediate family populate many of his best paintings, yet he was the most ambivalent of family men. He had five children with his long-suffering wife, Anne, a poet who survives him, but skipped town when each one was born. To complicate things further, he discovered in midlife that he was in love with the poet James Schuyler, who became a perpetual houseguest long after the brief affair was over.
Fairfield Porter: A Life in Art, by Justin Spring, is not the sort of art book you plop on the coffee table to browse "some day." Modestly sized and handsomely designed--with just enough good-quality reproductions (27 in color) to whet your appetite for the way Porter's seductive palette sets off his intensely isolated figures--this is a page-turner to read in bed. --Cathy Curtis
Book Description
This absorbing biography of Fairfield Porter makes clear John Ashbery`s assessment of Porter as "perhaps the major American artist of this century." Justin Spring tells of Porter`s troubled, bohemian life, his struggle to raise a family while dealing with a bisexual identity, his work as an artist producing realist works in the midst of the Abstract Expressionist movement, and his late triumph as a painter and critic.
Customer Reviews:
Great read.......2005-01-08
I started this book knowing nothing about this important painter and finished it with a great understanding of both the man and his art.
Fairfield Porter, an interesting story.......2001-06-15
Fairfield Porter's paintings have a strange pale quality, and they are flooded with light. His subjects are upper class domestic, and many of them are pale and etherial. He painted his family friends, and their pvt haunts beautifully. Little did most people realize he was a torn person, and probably can be better understood by this reading.I think what amazed me the most about this book was the incredible latent homosexual exsistence that paralled and co-existed within Porter's very homey and simmering homogenous realism. The bio details his social, artistic and private relationships with a younger generation of artists. This book is a portrait of a man at war with his sexuality. His ptngs are beautifully orchestrated, sensual, understated. A must for those that want to know more about Porter's life, and the different sides that lived inside him. A good read!I love artist bios. This is a worthy effort.
Thorough, but difficult biography on Fairfield Porter.......2000-08-15
Justin Spring's biography on Fairfield Porter, A Life In Art, is one of the most difficult and disturbing biographies I've read in some time. It's incredibly thorough, as if no piece of information was left out.
Most biographies are bound to reveal new information, but the amount here is overwhelming. Other reviews here on Amazon bring out the detail, so there's no point repeating it. If you're only familiar with Porter from an artisitic standpoint the biography of his family life, lifestyle, manners, and politics will be shocking and difficult to bring together.
While in the middle of reading this book I had to let it go for a few months and read other things then go back to it. Porter's activities in the late 1940's to the mid 1950's were especially difficult to reconcile considering the subject matter of his output.
It seems the frankness in tone of the biography is totally in tune with Porter's ways of communicating. I suspect if Porter had lived longer then such an autobiography probably would have been as revealing.
An Artist of Quiet Contradiction.......2000-03-11
This book displays great beauty: the paper is beautiful, the writing is flawless and the subject matter (the art work) is cool and elegant. But the artist's life was a difficult & complex equation of contractions: he was born patrician, yet he was a leftist (he attended Socialist demonstrations in a chauffeur driven limousine); he was highly verbal and intellectual, yet he painted the coolest (visually abstract) emotion; he made realist art in an abstract art time; he was married yet he had sex with men; he was surrounded by a loving family, yet he remained remote and distant; he lived in the country, yet he was always running to the city; he was bright and balanced, yet his best (lifelong) friend was mentally deranged; he made the most stable art from the most unstable life; he was slender and active, yet he died early of a surprise heart attack; he was on the verge of greatness (and nearly penniless much of the time), but cared little for fame and less for money. This assortment of profound conflicts make for a great story, and the art works themselves tower above everything in their lofty remove, quiet dignity, and timeless spirit. Find out why that is so (and what it may mean for the history of 20th century art criticism) and read this haunting and very personal book you'll not forget.
An excellent literary and intellectual biography........2000-03-05
Justin Spring's Fairfield Porter: A Life In Art provides an excellent literary and intellectual biography, drawing important connections between Porter's social, artistic and personal lives and considering both his art and his position in the art world. Black and white and color photos pepper this in-depth biographical and artistic coverage.

Customer Reviews:
too complex for beginners.......2005-10-11
I'm new to scrapbooking so got this book for ideas. There were few interesting ideas but...
1) Required too many tools and supplies that I didn't have (I already have several hundred $s worth of tool and supplies).
2) Too many steps! The design process seemed too complex. It seemed like it'd take me an hour just to get the first 5 steps done, let alone the remaing 15 steps.
3) The designs weren't to my taste. I thought lot of the designs seem to "folksy" or too busy looking. I prefer more clean and "modern" look.
Overall, I found the book to be more discouraging to a new scrapbooker like me than inspiring.
Not For Everyone.......2005-09-29
I like scrapbooking but am not interested in this book. I bought based on the descriptions and reviews. Very disappointed in that most of the pages, if not all, have something too thick on them. I like my pages to lay flat and not bulk up my albums. Cute ideas for framing or displays... but a lot of the best parts don't lay flat enough for me and my scrapbook albums. Lots of techniques are shown, but many are also too time-consuming or too involved or, as other said, require too many different materials/tools (thus cost too much) for me. I want cute and quick. Precious yet balanced with my time and effort.
Scrapbook borders corners & Titles.......2005-08-14
This is a great book for scrapbooking. I have several scrapbooks, and this book is my favorite. The pages are so nicely done, and each page comes with directions, and a supply list of materials you will need to complete the project.
Worthwhile Book.......2005-01-22
This book has a bit of basic information on tools and supplies and then has a section on each season showing different borders, corners and titles for each one. The ideas are unique and instructions are given with photos on how to complete each one. I think it is a worthwhile book.
Creative & Current.......2003-11-22
I'm relatively new to scrapbooking and don't have a lot of time to devote to it, so I look for books like this one to help me get ideas and learn new things. I found this particular one to be full of pictures and instructions. It even includes ideas for alternate ways of applying certain techniques - which can help you be more creative on your own. The book is arranged by themes, offering several ideas for each topic. It covers a range of skill levels and refers to a lot of different tools - some of which I didn't know existed. The only reason I don't give a 5 is because some of the topics could use a little more instruction or assume you are using certain tools - which can be VERY expensive for someone who doesn't do this full time.
I recommend this book for anyone who wants to add polish to their pages and give them a more finished look. It worth the $$ for sure.

An irreverent, one-of-a-kind compendium from the award-winning author of Ishmael,
A Newcomer's Guide to the Afterlife can be read as a parable, an allegory, a work of fiction--or exactly what it claims to be: a helpful handbook for the recently deceased. It is filled with uncommon wisdom, bizarre imaginings, uncanny perceptions, and unexpected humor. Is it fantastic escapism or a seminal event in human history? Read it and find out....
Face it. The Afterlife is the ultimate test. You might as well study.

Great Book.......2004-05-15
I LOVED this book. The introduction is the best part. It makes the rest of the book so much more fascinating.
This must be a spoof.......2003-01-12
If any of this book is true, you will do everything to prolong your life. What this book describes can only be one person's version of Hell.
Read book description above. It's the best of the book.......2002-05-18
Reading the back cover of the book, text that is given in the editorial reviews section above, you are reading the most clever, the funniest part of the book. The next best is the Introduction - coincidences, human interaction, human fraility. No need to read beyond that. The book is clever, making marvelous connections to real historical people. Unfortunately, the cleverness is useless when the clever premise and/or connection degrades into drivel ... often close but never successful, funny or perceptive. There's too much good and excellent literature to waste your time on this. Even if you wish to mindlessly kill time, you can easily find better mindless reading.
Disappointed.......2002-01-07
Having read Ishmael, The Story of B, and After Dachau, I thought I knew what I was getting into with this book. I should have done my research. Perhaps if Daniel Quinn had provided a more accurate introduction (or not written one at all) I would have been able to take something from this book. As it is, I spent a too much time distracted by the thought that maybe, just maybe, he meant what he said and this was the result of a dream coupled with the extreme coincidence of his collaboration with Tom Whalen. My time would have been better served reading this book the way I know I would have had I not read his intro -- ignoring the vivid but useless description of the "physical" characteristics of this invented afterlife, and focusing on the message. Even with that in mind, I think Quinn has missed his mark here. There's certainly a good dose of creativity and some humor, and it paints a fascinating picture, but in the end I feel like I wasted my time. I can certainly think of better ways to impart dribbles of philosophy -- perhaps if he had spent less time describing the fantasy and more time actually trying to make a point, it would have been worthwhile. As it is, the "message" could easily be distilled into a single page, and we would all be much better for it.
Seriously Its not meant to be taken Seriously very Seriously.......2002-01-01
I don't understand some the below reviewers atitudes about this book. Yes, parts of book don't make a lot of sense, but I see that as the authors attempt to get us to look at our belief systems, when glanced at in the same way- are'nt they just as absurd? I think some people including me, came on this book thinking it was going to be another Ishamael- "a book to change the world and give people answers." Rather, it is a book to change your thinking. One thing I got from it was this- the answers to the questions you have gotten in this life, are, like the answers you get in this book, subjective because no one really knows! There are gems of wisdom to be gained from reading this book, I could go on...
Book Description
Spaghetti Westerns is the major critical exploration of the European Western. Christopher Frayling approaches the Westerns produced at Cinecitta Studios in Rome from a variety of perspectives, placing them in the Italian, social, political, industrial and cinematic contexts from which they evolved. Over 400 Spaghetti Westerns were produced during their 1960s peak period; Frayling deals with the most interesting examples, giving special attention to the films of Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood.
Customer Reviews:
a great textbook.......2005-09-23
As the prior reviewer says this is "Spaghetti Western 101." It would be a good text for a film class focusing on the genre. It reviews the history of the western in Italy, the pertinent biographical information on the most prominent artists, and gives an overview of the artistic and thematic concerns of the films. It's great for its analysis of Sergio Leone's work, and analysis of his ouevre in comparison to the westerns that had come before and those that would follow. It's limited number of color pictures, and its scholarly focus seem to make it less than ideal as a reference for the casual fan.
Spaghetti Western 101 - A "Must Have" for genre aficionados.......1998-05-13
I have very incidentally came across to this book when there was no internet, or any of these technological virtual capabilities. It was the spring of 1986, when a friend of mine called me up and said "there's something I saw in the bookshop at the film theatre, which is just for you. You must not miss it". It was the Istanbul Film Festival days, and the `thing' I must not miss was a book, called `Spaghetti Westerns - Cowboys and Europeans from Karl May to Sergio Leone' by Christopher Frayling. I went and saw the book on the shelf. I was stunned when I turned the cover page to see what's inside. There it was a two page wide picture of Lee Van Cleef, in `Colonel Mortimer' costumes. That famous artistic Van Cleef pose, looking out deadly with his Angel Eyes, waiting for Indio for `La Resa Dei Conti'. As soon as I saw that picture, even without reading the book, I said to myself this guy must have the same feelings as I have towards Leone's movies. Eversince then I have been reading that huge 284 pages book with full of interesting details and analysis. Every time I read it, I feel as if I am learning new things. I still refer that book quite often. He has also done television documentaries on Leone and Morricone for BBC. Christopher Frayling is very well known academician in the UK. He is the rector and the provost of famous Royal College of Art in London. I personally had the chance to meet with him, and had in-depth interviews on Sergio Leone. . There's no doubt that he is one of the most knowledgable people on Leone. He has also just finished a bulky book on Sergio Leone's biography. He is planning the release around the fall of 98. He has years of deep experience about the Spaghetti Western genre. This book is the second edition to the first one, and a "must have" for all spaghetti western genre with lots of interesting details, profound analysis, and stills. I believe that it satisfies both theoratical scholars as well as film buffs. It is a book that sc! ientifically, and emotionally justifies the quality of Spaghetti Western film genre, which has been humilitated and overlooked by many film critics as ersatz film genre. Get the book, read it, read it once more, and then evaluate the genre afterwards. A lot of vista is waiting for those who hadn't read it yet. The book also contains details on the cut scenes of Leone's westerns, as well as their box office revenues. The section I must enjoy is the one on the influence of Spaghetti Westerns on American Western films. And, a last recommendation is: reserve one of the best spots of your library, which can be easily accessable for your future references. Get this book quickly, and wait for the soon-to-be-published "la grande finale": "SOMETHING TO DO WITH DEATH - The Life and Films of Sergio Leone"
VIVA LEONE !! VIVA FRAYLING!!!

The Scrabble Word Guide.......2002-12-26
I own a very old (1953 Edition) of "The Scrabble Word Guide" with over 30,000 Words From Funk & Wagnalls New College Standard Diction. Foreword by James Brunot, of Scrabble fame. I love this book and have since purchased The Third Edition of The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary and DO NOT LIKE IT as well. I would like to purchase three (3) copies of Jacob Orleans and Edmund Jacobson's "The Scrabble Word Guide" for family and friends. This is an excellent and easy to follow word book.

Great Learning Resource and Reference for Scrabble.......2004-12-28
Great book! Whenever the game of Scrabble is played in my home, this book is alway available as a resource and reference. Besides the alpha master word list, this book list all the words for the 'big four.' Meaning, the J, Q, X, and Z. The book separates each of the 'big four' by 3 to 7 letter words. This books also list words with many vowels. Extremely helpful listing of words ending in A,B,F,I,O and U. Oh, I almost forgot - there is a listing of unusual words such as obol, rotl, and umbo. Worth the money! Unfortunately, this book is out of publication. My sister is going to have to settle for a used editon.
Book Description
They say that project management is like juggling with three balls - time, cost and quality; Programme Management is like a troupe of circus performers standing in a circle, all juggling three balls simultaneously and swapping balls from time to time. Each project has its own restraints of time, cost and resources and must also be seen in terms of its effect on other projects and resources. If programme management takes place in the normal three-dimensional world, then project management takes place in a flat two-dimensional world.
Customer Reviews:
It's project mgmt, not programme mgmt.......2004-05-01
I think the book really is about project management, not programme management. As a project manager professional I have read numerous project management books and to be honest, I have not learned anything new in this book. I was looking for a book that would provide a programme manager (former project manager that masters project management techniques) tools & techniques to help with managing a project portfolio. Furthermore, I found the book to be somehow expensive vs content.
A must for anyone involved in programme management.......2001-02-15
If you are about to take on the role of programme manager, or even if you've had it printed on your business card for a while, you need to read this book.
It does exactly what it says on the cover, and as a bonus is very readable. No mean feat given the subject matter. If you've read Project Management Demystified then you'll be familiar with the author's style.
The term "Programme Management" has so many meanings, and indeed different spellings either side of the Atlantic, it's refreshing to find a book that cuts through the confusion to the heart of the subject.
The fuzziness of the subject is demonstrated by the need to devote 6 pages merely to definitions of the term "Programme Management" (of which there are at least 4) but cleverly focuses on Programme Planning as the common denominator on which we can all agree.
As well as appropriate coverage of the theory and best practice, there are case studies too. However these are perhaps too basic although they do illustrate the issues likely to confront anyone establishing a new programme management infrastructure in a typical organisation.
One criticism; although I appreciate the author's style of humour, many of the jokes are simply terrible (even though they made me smile). I'm sure it's an old gag but it took me a while to realise where the fictitious case study company Norfolk and Goode got their name from! (Oh dear I hope they are fictitious).
However, to his credit the author does provide a warning when one of his "jokes" is approaching and they are labelled as footnotes, with a corny (pun intended) illustration. So you can skip over them if you find them irritating. Bizarrely, the threat of an approaching pun does make you want to read on, so I will assume that is their intention.
All in all a useful book which can be read from cover to cover, or dipped in to as required.

Terribly Overrated.......2007-04-06
This may be the worst Project Management book ever written. The author is painfully slow in ever getting to a point, and constantly telling the reader we're going to explore this in more depth in the next chapter; time after time after time. It seems that he wrote the book and then his publisher asked him to 'beef' it up with another 100 pages. Brevity must have been entirely dismissed in his project goals for writing the book.
Great Book.......2006-02-06
Purchased this book as an intro to Project Management, but never thought I would get so much out a book.
I would recommed this book to anyone.
Good Job Kemp.
Solid, clear, excellent material!.......2005-09-21
This is an excellent book for me - I'm a newbie to PM! The book is packed with info and the author does a super job of breaking down the topics in a logical and organized fashion. Other books throw you into a very deep pool drowning you with poor topic organization. After chapters 1 - 4, you'll get a solid grasp of what PM is all about. Nice work.
Only Demystified that turns out to be simplified.......2005-08-15
I found this animal on the discounted, discounted stack. What a find! Well I dug through it and found nothing, no extraordinary insights. In fact many functions and formulas were over demystified. I suppose this is better than not. I can never hurt to see project management from a different view; however this should not be the only book.
Project Mgt Demystified is my Bible for Project Management.......2005-03-29
I have read Project Management Demystified and it has been extremely helpful in helping me get my projects back on track. I have written down the 6 keys to project success on my white board so that I can refer to them several times daily. It is an excellent source on ideas for project management and soft skills. Project Management Demystified has become my Bible for Project Management. I take it with me everywhere!

Programme Management Demystified: Managing multiple projects successfully
ASIN: 0415421632 |
Book Description
This book explains the many techniques which have been developed to help you manage projects successfully using very clear objectives within a commercial environment. Examples are drawn from construction, civil engineering, product launches, publishing, computer hardware and software, scientific projects and aerospace.
Customer Reviews:
clear and concise.......2001-05-26
In clear and concise writing Reiss presents a framework for understanding the concepts of project management. First he introduces you to the jargon and then goes though nine steps you need to reach a successful project. He addresses critical path concerns, and resource allocation. His section on criteria for choosing computer software was informative, but the scope of the programs he discusses is far beyond the needs of a small shop.
