    Book Description

Professor Dr Guy Delmarcel was Curator of Textiles at the Brussels Koninklijke Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis (1975-1990) and Professor of History of Art at the Catholic University of Leuven (1981-2002). He passionately devoted his career to the study of Flemish tapestry. His intensive research on the 'Mobile Frescoes of the North' resulted in numerous articles, books, lectures, and exhibitions, thereby unlocking tapestry to both scholars and the general public. Guy Delmarcel has now been given emeritus status. The Department of Archaeology, History of Art and Musicology decided to honour its former chairman by offering him a Festschrift entirely dedicated to his beloved field of research. Fourteen renowned tapestry scholars from all over the world willingly accepted the invitation to celebrate their esteemed colleague. Throughout the centuries Flemish tapestry has eagerly been collected. In the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times the European elite spent fortunes on these lavish works of art. A number of essays compiled in the present volume focus on the patronage and collections of European kings and noblemen. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries European and American museums became important collectors of Flemish tapestry, as is demonstrated by some museological studies presented in Studies in Honour of Guy Delmarcel. This penetration by Flemish tapestry of the public realm has obviously necessitated iconographic and stylistic studies. A number of new analyses are gathered in the Festschrift.

                      Book Description

Profusely illustrated with dozens of photographs, this is everyone's guide to investigating the paranormal world. Sweet shows that paranormal light forms known as orbs are all around us and can be documented by anyone with a camera. Sweet, who holds a Ph.D. in Esoteric Studies from American Pacific University, outlines the history of orbs including why they're here and what they're trying to communicate to us.

4 out of 5 stars OK book for the beginner.......2006-06-07

If taking pictures of orbs is all you're looking for, this is the perfect book for you. For the serious paranormal investigator, this book is rather limited. It touches on "vortexes" and "ecto-plasm" even crop circles and UFO's, however the primary focus is on orbs. On a positive note: the color photos are excellent and for that reason alone, I recommend this book!

                      4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-07-27

I found this book to be exactly as I hoped for. I am a co-founder of Garden State Ghost Hunter Society, and I agree with the writter, that orbs are energy, not always dust particles. If that was the case,we would have dust particles in all pictures ever taken, not just the supposed haunted ones. Some ghost hunters believe that orbs are usually dust...then where is the dust in any pictures? The author leaves you to decide for yourself, and also has several good pictures to help out the investigator, and to learn by.There is more info on other subjests as well. Great book!

                      2 out of 5 stars Exceedingly Limited.......2005-05-05

If your TOTALLY new to the concept of orb photography then this book is a decent place to start if you feel you MUST have a hard copy to reference. However, for everyone else I suggest you look elsewhere. Notice I said orb photography, not paranormal photography. To start with the author rambles at times from everything about Buddhism to Huna (Obviously the authors religious preference), and much of the photography information is outdated in this book. Anyone can go to a search engine and type in orbs or paranormal photography and get way more information than is in this book.

I was TOTALLY disappointed with the TOTAL LACK of paranormal pictures in this book. Then the few there are on pages CS1 - CS12 are pitiful at best. There are some grainy black and white pictures of her husband and pets once again the same looking orb around. I liken it to the horrific family slide shows my favorite aunt and uncle use to torment us with growing up. Also if your looking for any other form of paranormal photography other than orbs then I TOTALLY recommend skipping this book, even if your a beginner. Simply due to the fact it is nearly nonexistent in this book. What little there is rambles and is outdated.

I purchased the book hoping to get some insight on orb sizes, colors, ......... Almost all the orbs in this book look the same, and she briefly mentions the possibility of reasons for colors on pages 68 - 69 (Two paragraphs), but again there is so much more credible up to date information on the web.

The ending of this book was definitely one of the most bazaar I have ever witnessed. She concludes she believes orbs based on her Huna religion are thought forms. Unbelievable. She makes a brief reference to the possibility of orbs in the Bible which I already knew, but honestly that was the best part of the entire book. What about all the reference to orbs in ancient society before we had photography? What about all the orbs taken by photographers unaware of the orb phenomena? I have pictures that date back to the 1960s with orbs in them, we had no clue as to what they were.I am torn on rather to give this book 1 star or 2. I will give her 2 stars simply for her effort as I have stated previously in this book the information is exceedingly limited.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful insights for all serious ghost researchers.......2005-04-29

This is a book that every serious ghost researcher should read. I was pleasantly surprised when I read this thoughtful exploration of photographic evidence for paranormal phenomena.

"How to Photograph the Paranormal" focuses on the myriad issues related to orbs, rods, and other visual anomalies in photos.

In this almost 'whodunnit' narrative, Dr. Sweet begins by explaining what started her search: In 2001, Dr. Sweet--hoping for photographic evidence of animals' souls--took photos of a a beloved family pet as the dog's spirit left this world. Some of those photos revealed startling images that could not be explained.

In "How to Photograph the Paranormal," we follow Dr. Sweet's explorations of every possible answer for those early photos and others that were part of her studies.

New and experienced ghost hunters will enjoy Dr. Sweet's well-illustrated chapter offering "Orb Hunting Tips." In another chapter, she charts extensive comparisons of ball lightning, earth lights, ghost lights, will-o'-the-wisps, UFOs, and orbs.

Throughout this book, Dr. Sweet continues to explore vortexes, ectoplasm, shadow ghosts, and even anomalies related to crop circles. She also digs deeply into traditional and New Age spirituality, looking for references to--and explanations of--the lights and other images that reveal themselves in paranormal photos.

No two researchers are likely to agree on the causes (or spiritual implications) of photographic anomalies. Many of my views and research techniques differ from Dr. Sweet's. However, her book explores a wide range of opinions, and she carefully documents the many considerations that led to her conclusions. I am very glad that I read this book.

Although this was clearly a personal journey for Dr. Sweet, her many references, quotations, and endnotes are valuable for anyone actively studying paranormal photography.

I recommend this book for any ghost researcher, whether you take angels, interdimensional beings, or even "ghost photos" seriously. Dr. Sweet's "How to Photograph the Paranormal" provides useful insights to the many possible answers for questions raised by paranormal photographs.

1 out of 5 stars Should be called the Art of Hellsing (NOT an RPG book).......2006-09-20

If you are fan of Anime Art and a fan of the Hellsing series, then this book is for you. If you are looking for a book to run a d20 campaign in the Hellsing universe, forget it. The first 47 pages are nothing more than episode summaries. Page 48-66 are character summaries but do not contain any role playing stats or features. Pages 66 - 83 describes the locale and world of Hellsing. Again, there are no maps or RPG stats to help run a game. Pages 84 - 112 are nothing but art from the show. Finally we get to game info on pages 113 to 135. However, instead of the high quality, color, glossy pages, of the previous chapters, we are given standard black & white pages. Sadly, even the last 2 pages of the B&W section are devoted to artwork and a list of the cast of the show.

This is a poor excuse for a role playing supplement and functions better as a coffee table book. I love Anime and especially loved the Hellsing series but I gave this book only one star because it is NOT a role playing supplement!! It is an art book. I'm glad I only paid $5 for it from a bargain table at DragonCon. (And yes, it is on my coffe table.)

5 out of 5 stars Conversations with John Lennon.......2005-05-09

So John Lennon is still at it, making us laugh and cry, shaking us free from worn-out ways and challenging us to think afresh! Through Linda Keen, his remarkable soul-friend and co-creator of this astonishing book, he sends us his fresh understandings; he shows us that - just like ours - his consciousness is alive and growing. Linda has achieved a feat of extraordinary listening: on every page we feel John's voice and her deep, compassionate response. Together they offer us wisdom that's profound and universal. Take the phone off the hook, bolt the door - and then start reading. I defy you to put the book down, or to read it and remain unchanged.

                                5 out of 5 stars Magical Journey.......2002-12-09

I have watched the progression of this book and its author for ten years. I first encountered it in a very synchronistic way in a bookshop in San Francisco: it fell off the shelf at my friend not a day after we had been discussing John Lennon having been Mozart in a past life. I was compelled by this astonishing occurence to write to Linda as a fellow writer and long-time student of philosophy. I found her to be a very straightforward and down to earth person, not in the least a Beatlefan of the typical mould. Having some fifteen years' experiece at that time studying psychical phenomena, I was convinced that what she had experienced was quite genuine, as it fit exactly with what I had heard from other people who also had contact with John in other dimensions.

Whatever certain reviewers here may think, based on what they think they know of the private Lennon, John was a deeply spiritual man, and one of his abiding concerns was to open up people's minds to the fact that there is more to us than the everyday workaday world would admit. As many people asked in early Beatle days 'Why was a man who could write the like of "Tomorrow Never Knows" jumping around on the stages of the world singing "Twist and Shout"?'

I found this book deeply moving the first time I read it ten years ago and every time since; it is, I believe, a gift to us from John, a loving remnder that life is not meaningless, crass and stupid, that we do go on, and that loving each other and learning is what we're about. For those who are sceptical, or enquiring, or just beginning on a spiritual path this book is a good friend; it explains much commonly accepted basic information in a way that is palatable and not stuffy, by a pair of guides (John and Linda) who are unafraid to stand up and reveal themselves for what they are. There are no social masks, and, on Linda's part, no grandiosity.

4 out of 5 stars Keeping an Open Mind.......2002-11-18

Ok, I figure I'll be labelled a New Age wacko for giving this book four stars, but that's ok. Things aren't always what they seem, is my opinion. Linda Keen gives us her experience of dialogue with the late, great Mr. Lennon, and the workings of the afterlife. I've never been a particularly religious person, but choose to take from many spiritual systems, Hinduism, Theosophy, Buddhism, Paganism, etc. I found that many of the things Keen says, through John, relate to ideas I've always had about the afterlife, that we go there to learn things, work through problems in our previous lives, and hopefully learn something in the process. And that there is no fame there, and people have the same bodies just once in many lifetimes. My ideal of the afterlife would be to be able to walk up to F. Scott Fitzgerald, Van Gogh, Charles Chaplin or any other of my idols and have a good chit-chat. Supposedly, this is true. Then again, Keen could just have been spouting her ideas from reading them from esoteric texts. However, these ideas are what strike me most about the book, not necessarily the writing, which isn't all that great, and Keen spends too much time focusing on her own life, and how it related, supposedly, to John. Kinda brings back an old quote from the movie 'Bull Durham', when Kevin Costner says something to the effect of 'Why does everyone have these famous past lives, like 'I used to be Queen Elizabeth'? Why couldn't they just have been Joe Schmo?'
The idea of John having been Mozart in a past life doesn't seem quite as far fetched as at first glance (and believe me, I was thinking, what a crock!). Think about it, from what I know, Mozart died a pauper, dismissed as a crazy man with little talent, who is now considered the greatest composer of all time. Why wouldn't John come back, to be more wildly famous than virtually anyone up to that point? Karmic, if you ask me.
He was getting back what was due him; but he also had to pay a lot for it. I am not sure I disagree when Keen divulges that John almost inititated his own death. This was a man with many demons, and John himself did foray into spiritual matters, like astrology, in his secluded years, as if searching for an answer to overcome those demons.
I'd only recommend this book to those with an open mind toward spiritual ideas. The text may be a bit cloudy and not have all the answers, but I feel it's a worthwhile read for those who are curious and can deal with contradictions. Who knows what exists in the universe?!

5 out of 5 stars Bridging the Gap.......2002-05-12

"Across the Universe with John Lennon" is a down-to-earth and humorous story as well as a highly developed and positive spiritual message---just what I would expect from John himself. Linda's story bridges a gap---the gap between the sadness of John's death and the vague suspicion that our spirit friends are indeed trying to help us at this juncture in history around the new millenium. If ever there as a person who would try to communicate with us from beyond the grave, wouldn't John Lennon be among the first to sign up for the job? Anyone who understood him at all during his life must agree that John was a humanitarian who believed in love and peace and did not shy away from unconventional ways to get his message across---first through rock-n-roll and then through bed-ins. He was also deeply spiritual and experienced much psychic phenomena himself. It would not be difficult to accept the notion that John would still be around to help us, to finish the job he started during his life. He loves us. In all his unconventionality, he wants to show us that life still goes on after the death of the body and that many lessons are still being learned, even for him. He is showing us how it really is. God is not an old guy with a beard, and people do not immediately get wings and harps when they die. Whether you are a Beatle fan who loved John Lennon and would like to hear how he's doing and what he has to say, or just someone interested in the spirit world, this book is extremely enjoyable and beneficial to your individual spiritual growth.

2 out of 5 stars Paperback writer with an identity crisis.......2002-02-12

I approached this book with an open mind, believing that it is entirely possible to communicate with those who have passed on. But not long after the first few chapters, it becomes painfully obvious that this book is mostly about Linda Keen, not John Lennon.

First we find out that not only was she his sister in a past life, but also a spirit guardian, first violin during his Mozart incarnation, his mother, a slave owner who adored her nanny Gracie/John, a son, a daughter, a soulmate, a twin soul, a lover, and on and on. If so connected, why wasn't Keen a member of a certain rock n' roll band from Liverpool during his last incarnation, of which she readily dismisses in her book with nary a mention of Paul, Ringo, or George. In fact, when it's her time to attend a fan function on his 50th birthday, she insists the fans themselves are intruding on her own private Idaho with John, as she is forced to heal him of all those annoying projections that keep getting in their way.

The most appalling moment in this book occurs when "John" states he visits his murderer Mark David Chapman in jail, loving and forgiving him and claiming that the two of them fit together like hand and glove. Pleeze. I don't think even the great JL is godlike enough to come to this unthinkable conclusion.

When all is said and done, Keen's dialogue is most likely a lively and spirited conversation with herself, the character of John Lennon merely a manafestation of some aspect of her own spiritual yearnings or connections that take the form of JL. If she had only taken a less literal tack to the story, it would have been a delightful read with interesting, enlightening and witty insights. Instead, it flounders in a sea of self promotion.

                                Book Description

By day Martin Dimery is a teacher at Britain's famous Millfield School. By night he dons a wig, straps on a Rickenbaker and becomes John Lennon. As a Beatles tribute show, Sgt Pepper's Only Dart Board Band play in pubs to a handful of dedicated followers, at festivals to thousands of revelers, and weddings to the downright drunk and disorderly. With liberal dashes of tragedy and comedy, this diary is a romp through the bizarre and hilarious world of tribute bands as Dimery juggles teaching, his family and running a circus of Pepper impersonators on their own magical mystery tour.

5 out of 5 stars a Must for Beatles fans.......2003-11-25

I came across this book by chance on holiday in San Francisco. It is the story of a man who spends his spare time as John Lennon in a British Beatles tribute band. The book is hilarious, particularly if you have a liking for absurd humour. It also provides an interesting insight into the music of the Beatles.

According to Robert J. Robinson and Mark van Osnabrugge, so-called business angels--those generally unheralded private investors who usually specialize in high-growth fields and often involve themselves directly in the endeavors they fund--now provide 30 to 40 times more financing each year than their more famous counterparts, venture capitalists. In Angel Investing, Robinson and Van Osnabrugge use personal interviews, anecdotal evidence, and more than 300 research studies to show exactly who these financiers are, how they operate, and where they can be found. Robinson, an international management consultant, and Van Osnabrugge, an associate professor at Harvard Business School, also compare various financing options, explain precisely how angels and venture capitalists function differently, describe proven ways to attract them, and provide relevant resources. "The vast size and power of the business angel market in the United States is not well understood but is of incredible importance to our entrepreneurial sector and, indirectly, to maintaining our economic growth and standard of living," the authors write. They pack their book accordingly with valuable information for serious fund-seekers who have exhausted the traditional three F's (founder, family, and friends), as well as those who are considering entrepreneurial investments of their own. --Howard Rothman

                                    Book Description

They deliver more capital to entrepreneurs than any other source. And they often receive an incredible return on their investments. They're angel investors, some of the most important--and least understood--players in business today. The United States has close to three million angels, whose investments in startups exceed $60 billion per year. Some of our most successful companies were funded by angels--companies like Ford, AOL, and Amazon.com. But until now, little has been written about these angels, due in part to their preference for anonymity. Angel Investors provides an inside look at who these angels are and how they operate. It also shows would-be angels and entrepreneurs how best to find each other.

                                    5 out of 5 stars more than a Guide.......2003-11-11

I am the Founder & CEO of a business that within the next 8 to 12 months was seeking to raise between $2M and $5M to fund our expansion. I always thought of going straight to Venture Capital firms or Private Equity divisons of Invmt Banks that I have already been in touch with. This book, Angel Investing, was a truly priceless read to me. The education delivered by authors has helped me re-strategize my approach to inviting external investors and also the amount that I should try to raise and the schedule of funds. What I thought was most helpful was the detailed comparisons between Angel Investors and Venture Capitalist, as well as understanding the psychology behind their thinking and how an entrepreneur seeking outside funds should try to prepare every aspect of their presentation (themselves, their product and overall business plan). The book has given me tools to have most questions covered and more importantly has prepared me to become an angel myself in the years ahead.

If you are planning to go after Angel funding, this book is a must-read. The book contains interviews with a broad spectrum of Angels, who discuss their investment experience, the thinking they go through, and key things they look for, when evaluating an opportunity. This book would serve as an excellent reference for anyone preparing to be in front of Angels.

5 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Angel Investing.......2002-07-22

"Angel Investing" by Mark Van Osnabrugge and Robert J. Robinson gives useful information about angel investors and venture capitalists.

Van Osnabrugge and Robinson estimate that angel investors--wealthy individuals who invest their own money into start-up companies--invest three to five times more money than venture capitalists and back thirty to forty times more ventures, making angel investors the primary source of external capital for entrepreneurs.

But, how do you meet and present your business idea to an angel investor? What factors do angel investors give the most weight to when debating whether or not to fund a venture? How do angel investors differ from venture capitalists when valuing a start-up company?

"Angel Investing" answers these questions and many more. It is stuffed with studies, interviews, and solid advice. "Angel Investing" can be divided into three main categories:

                                    * General background about angel investors and venture capitalists and their relationship and importance to business and the economy.

                                    * Practical advice for entrepreneurs seeking start-up funds from angel investors or venture capitalists.

                                    * Practical advice for individuals considering becoming angel investors and making investments in small companies.

Each topic in "Angel Investing" is well documented. It's a rather formal book, actually. Robinson is a professor at the Harvard Business School and Van Osnabrugge is a former fellow of the Harvard Business School.

I found the section about successful angel investment deals a bit too rich for my taste. For example, we learn that one angel investor who backed amazon.com got a 260 times return on his initial investment of $100,000 making him $26 million. Another angel who invested in the Body Shop received 10,500 times his initial investment. As a new angel investor, don't get overly excited about the prospects! Remember, many angel investments fail dismally. As the authors point out, you must only invest money you can afford to lose!

If you are already a financially successful entrepreneur who considers becoming an angel investor, you might want to read "Angel Investing" to help improve the chances of making successful angel investments. However, the book is not a complete analysis of the due diligence process.

And, of course, from an entrepreneur's standpoint, reading a book won't automatically put you in contact with serious angel investors, and much of the real work in financing a new venture involves finding personal contacts to introduce you to appropriate angel investors. Van Osnabrugge and Robinson note that most funded ventures involve personal introductions.

Maybe, if you're ready to invest $50,000 per company or more (and ready to lose $50,000 or more per investment!), you're tired of investing in public companies (with mystic accounting and lack of reportability to the investor), and you want to add value to your investment by contributing information and contacts to your investment, this might be a good book to help get you started. On the downside, you'll probably have no diversification and poor liquidity with angel investments.

The most important tip from "Angel Investing": Do adequate research before investing in a company. And, it's best if you know the industry and know business.

This book is one of THE BEST books on this subject matter that I have read in recent years. Having been in the venture capital industry for many years I was very interested to read what van Osnabrugge and Robinson had to say. I'll be the first to admit that I was a bit skeptical because the book was written by academics. However, after a careful read it became clear that these authors have done their homework and know what they are talking about. This book is an enjoyable read that has some of the most useful information I have found to date. I urge anyone interested in entrepreneurship and investing to read this book. You won't be sorry.
