Ideas.......2002-09-17
This book is good to get ideas from. However, I found, as a designer who works with non-profits as wellas regular clients, that many of the ideas presented would be cost prohibitive. The major factors a designer deals with on a daily basis with MOST clients are budget, mailing issues and costs, as well as practicality. Many of the ideas in this book look great and are terriffic concepts, but in order to pull them off, you must either have a sizeable budget that covers all phases of the production, or you must have the time and people power to take care of things like the final assembly of the item. It's a good book if you just want to get some neat ideas, but keep in mind the budget you have to work with before implementing or offering any of these kinds of ideas to clients. My opinion would be to go and look at this book in a bookstore and take notes and get ideas rather than purchase.
Good Book with Good Ideas.......2001-05-24
I recently bought this book, and I was a little concerned about it, because I didn't really know anythign about it, but at the moment i got and got the chance to read it... I was really happy because it has everything I ask for in a good graphic design book: It has the concept explanation, it has tips on money saving techniques and it also has great photographs. The only thing I could ask for is the book to have more pages so I can keep reading it over and over. I really recomend it as an "idea inspiration" book.
Great idea book.......2000-06-27
This book is full of great designs that spark the imagination. I use it all the time.

Photography Creative Guidance.......2007-06-27
All of John Shaws books are thoughtfull, well written and aesthetically valuable. This one is specifically oriented towards Shaws photographic values, i.e. what is his view of how to photograph nature. What I took away from reading "Focus on Nature" was the abstract sense of how Shaw dedicates his techniques to achieving high quality photographs. This book does not teach creativity however. That is up to the individual.
Not Impressed.......2006-07-25
I was not impressed with this book.
Very little technical data, no data on many of the excellent images in the book.
The writting was flowery and arty rather than concise with information to convey.
If your looking for a book to teach you something, I would not recommend this book.
John Shaw's Nature Photography book is, however, outstanding.
Focus on nature indeed.......2006-07-06
This book has everything you expect in a John Shaw book and more.
While there are beautiful shots and a detailed descriptions of the equipment, location and the time of that the photos where taken. The book is really more about the thought process that goes into the shot, the hardware involved, lighting, lens focusing, filters types, framing and composition.
The book also details the environment weather it's a desert conditions or lush landscape, time of day and time of season and how to handle lighting, exposure and what types of filters to use based on this.
He reminds us that sometimes there will be a good shot but patience will turn it into a great shot if you a willing to wait for light conditions to change. Look at your framing and composition and deciding what elements to emphasize and what to leave out or minimize. Practicing good stewardship of the environment and making sure to leave things as you found them.
The photography in Focus on nature is breath taking as always. While the book pre-dates digital media it does not detract in any from the book because with the exception of the discussion of film everything else is applicable to the digital and film photographer.
The book cover to cover is hi-gloss paper and all photos are in color and oh-so vibrant.
I own several of Johns books and I would have to say that alll are outstanding and this is no exception.
5 stars and then some.
Exactly what I had in mind........2006-03-25
This is one those truly "good" books.
I was looking for help in "seeing", or recognition of a great photo, rather than for help in photography technique. John Shaw communicates precisely this in a very lucid and concise manner. It predates digital cameras so some of the photography equipment mentioned is now obsolete. But the real point of the book is about "seeing" and capturing a great photo and that is much easier to do with digital equipment.
I almost made the mistake of buying a more inferior treatment of the subject by a different author because I had skimmed a copy and it looked helpful. I am glad I took time to read the reviews before making my purchase. When I read the reviews on that book I found positive mention of John Shaw's Focus on Nature. When I checked the reviews of his book I realized that this was probably a better choice. It is! I am delighted with this book!
John Shaw's Focus on Nature.......2005-08-18
I found this publication extremely helpful. Basic information delivered in a user friendly manner with terrific examples.

Just cool comics.......2002-08-24
I stumbled across this series and have been delighted ever since. Lots of PC discussion, argument, worry and neuroses. Just plain fun and an interesting look at a different perspective. Well drawn and at times just plain funny.
My Favorite "Soap Opera".......2000-08-01
This was the second Bechdel book I purchased and it hooked me for life. Her earlier works were bits and commentaries on life, but this one takes a group of characters and builds a web of stories and community. Each character is unique and interesting as a character, something you just don't often see in comics.
For example, although Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes" series has some wonderful characters in it, they never change. He took a moment in a child's life, froze it, and riffed on that. Bechdel starts at a time in her characters' lifes, shows a lot of personality within one or two panels, and moves them forward through time. Their characters have an arc and they do change.
These strips are all from a series published as she went along. So, it's all rather Dickensian, isn't it? I wonder sometimes how she decides how things will go. Given that they are published in real time, she has an opportinity to map the character's lives to those of her community and to current events.
I view this as the only "soap opera" worth following.
For those unfamiliar with her work, be advised that the subject matter (certainly in the supplemental bit added to the end of the book) is on the mature side.
A wonderful look into the life and loves in the lesbian comm.......1998-03-26
This is a great look at the life and loves of the lesbian community. I truly enjoyed it!
Mo episodes 1-23. Recommended.......1997-03-20
The Mo tale, episodes 1-23, rounds out this book, which is a transition between the disconnected, but funny, strips of the original "Dykes to Watch Out For", and the saga of Mo. The book contains both, as well as Mo and Harriet's first night together

Interesting debut with much potential........2006-12-21
Ray Friesen, Lookit! Vol. 1: A Cheese-Related Incident and Other Stories (Don't Eat Any Bugs Productions, 2005)
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the current upswing in popularity in graphic novels is that a reasonably talented artists can, for all intents and purposes, self-publish a collection and get it picked up by a distributor major enough that it shows up on library shelves half a country away from its point of origin. A Cheese-Related Incident is a perfect example of this phenomenon.
A Cheese-Related Incident seems patterned after the old Rocky and Bullwinkle show, complete with fractured fairy tales and "Hey, Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit outta my hat!" skits. It's decently written and illustrated, not the best thing you'll see all year, but certainly not the worst, either. What makes this such an interesting book, however, is the originality here; Friesen is not a well individual by any standards, and his sense of humor is a few (okay, a lot of) degrees off center. There are only a handful of graphic artists working today who can get away with doing stuff that's just out-and-out weird; Friesen seems, with a bit more learning and attention to the craft, to be poised to put himself on that same shelf.
An interesting debut with a great deal of potential. I'll be very interested to see how this series grows and changes over the years. ** ½

Book Description
With just thirteen feature films in half a century, Stanley Kubrick established himself as one of the most accomplished directors in motion picture history. Kubrick created a landmark and a benchmark with every film; working in almost every genre imaginable, including film noir, war movie, SF, horror, period drama, historical epic, love story and satire - yet transcended traditional genre boundaries with every shot. Examining every feature film, from the early shorts through to classics such as Paths of Glory, Dr Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and finally, Eyes Wide Shut, The Complete Kubrick provides a unique insight into understanding the work of cinema's most enigmatic, iconoclastic and gifted auteur.

Excellent, Entertaining book........2005-05-22
This book talks about the complete filmography of the great director Stanley Kubrick, from his first short film to Eyes Wide Shut. This book is very entertaining and a good read to help you with your knowledge and interest on Stanley K. I recommend this book to any fan of his movies. Sure there may be some minor flaws in the book, but still picking it up is worth your time.
This book includes detailed summaries of each film he directed and many other fun facts.
My favorite Stanley K.
1. A Clockwork Orange - magnificent from the opening to the end
2. Paths of Glory - the greatest anti-war movie, ever.
3. Barry Lyndon - an INCREDIBLE look at a very interesting mans life.
4. Dr. Strangelove - an excellent satire.
5. The Killing - his first true classic
6. Full Metal Jacket - one of the greatest vietnam war films.
7. The Shining - an incredilbe adaptation to Stephen King's novel
8. Spartacus - a fairly good film looking at the life of an ancient roman gladiator, spartacus.
9. 2001: A Space Odyssey - incredible SCI-Fi film.
Seriously flawed.......2004-07-12
This book could have been an enjoyable and useful resource, but unfortunately it is riddled with factual errors. I can only recommend this to researchers who are able to verify the information within before using this book as a source. Anyone else will have to guess which information is correct and which is false. (Examples: on page 173, Hughes states that the 1.66:1 ratio, which SK adopted for A Clockwork Orange, was subsequently used on Barry Lyndon, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket. This is completely wrong. Barry Lyndon was shot in 1.77:1, and The Shining and Full Metal Jacket were shot in 1.33:1 and projected in 1.85:1-though the DVD and video version of the latter 2 films preserved the original 1.33:1 format. Another mistake is a quote supposedly from The Film Director as Superstar by Michel Ciment. Since Joseph Gelmis was the author of this book, and Ciment the author of another, it will take some detective work to figure out which Hughes means.)

Book Description
Popular music is with us everywhere. Beyond the walls of concert halls we now listen to music in our homes and as a sonic backdrop in cars, airplanes, restaurants and shopping malls.
The Global Jukebox is the first comprehensive study of the international industry which produces, markets and distributes popular music.
Now in the communications age the music industry is undergoing great change: facing up to the concentration of ownership and market share in the hands of the `big six' multinational companies, and constantly adopting technological innovations which transform the ways music is produced and consumed. Author Robert Burnett examines how the industry is producing global stars and products for an ever-growing international audience, closely examines the role of the largest and single most important producer and consumer for commercial music, the United States.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, problem is that the information is dated........2003-09-02
I hate to give this book three stars, because I'm certain that at the time it was written it deserved five. The trouble is that much of the value of the book comes from an analysis of the existing market and predictions of future trends and the market has altered significantly since that time and we as readers know how some of those trends did (or didn't) emerge.
Shame, because the parts that are valuable of this book are really valuable-- largely that's the thinking about the influence and study of popular music and the way in which the industry tends to form and (re)form over time. The bibliography was also a pretty great thing.
Publisher-- time for a new edition?
Very well written, well-researched, and very informative.......1998-11-05
This was a fascinating and intriguing book. It focuses on the 6 (which is now recently 5) major labels and their international/global market share. It focuses on Warner, Sony, EMI, BMG, MCA and Polygram; and how these transnationals BY FAR dominate the whole music industry worldwide. An oligopoly exists in the music industry. These transnationals have expanded globally as they realized that music is a GLOBAL business. Here is the 1997 worldwide market share: MCA=5.6% BMG=12.1%, Warner=13.1%, Sony=14.5%, Polygram=16.7%, EMI=15.3%, and the indie labels=22.8%. So, the majors control 77% of the world market! Wow! "Because they control so much of the entertainment industry, the oligopolist firms are able to prevent smaller, specialist firms from surviving in popular music niches...As small firms make considerable inroads into the market, large firms respond by absorbing them through merger or joint venture..." ...I have many, many books on the music business, but this book is definitely one of the best. It takes an intriguing look into the global aspect of the music industry in which these majors dominate. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the music business!

Do not underestimate Timman's quality.......2002-05-05
I've read all of Timman's books over the years, and I've thoroughly enjoyed all of them.
Last summer, I showed a couple of boxes of chess books to a close friend of mine, rated 2400. Though he had actually borrowed this book 2 years ago, he carefully perused all my books
over a couple of months while staying at my place.
Without exaggeration, when it came time to sell most of these to the local dealers, he quietly repeated over the course of a week that I should read this particular book. He didn't bother mentioning any of the others, and I have quite a few good books.
He stated that Timman's analysis was outstanding. We both agreed how rare this is (in combination with being interesting) in chess literature. Of the four best authors, Dvoretsky et al., Speelman, Nunn, and Timman, Timman is clearly the best.
I found the work to be thorough and Timman is the only author that I can tolerate with any opening (his reputation for playing just about any opening is famous).
The earlier work, The Art of Chess Analysis, is readable by lower rated players, contrary to what some of the reviews claim.
This work is even more readable by a huge range of players.
I think it is a fallacy in chess to worry about books being too difficult for certain strengths of players--willpower and persistence are the correct criteria. One of John Nunn's more denser books was studied along with three others by a friend of mine who jumped from 2050 to 2300 as an adult within a year.
Timman's book has superior analysis to ALL of the books in the first half of the 20th century (Alekhine, etc.) and you'll enjoy his opening analysis to boot!

At different times, many business leaders face the question of whether to roil waters or to calm them--shake up the system or become part of it. Accept the status quo too passively, goes the thinking, and a leader loses his or her power to push a group's performance to its highest potential. On the other hand, firebrands who push too hard and refuse to accept organizational realities can outrun their followers, and find themselves ineffective. Like Bob Herbold's The Fiefdom Syndrome or Larry Bossidy's Execution, this book comes from a corporate insider and offers readers a map to navigating the often-complicated political intrigues which characterize large organizations.
Author Blythe McGarvie works today as a consultant and board member of such global giants as Accenture, Pepsi Bottling, and St. Paul Travelers. In addition, she served previously as CFO of Bic Group, a Fortune 500 company. Through her performance in these roles, she's demonstrated her own career savvy. Now she seeks to pass on the lessons. As McGarvie explains it, the central challenge for leaders of modern, complex organizations is to understand how different people, processes, and trends integrate with each other ("fit in"), while at the same time retaining enough perspective and strength to transform those pieces and make their whole greater than the sum of individual parts ("stand out").
In a breezy writing style that weaves together perspectives from her personal experiences with anecdotes from a wide range of companies, such as GE, Microsoft, and Marriott, McGarvie makes the argument for 6 key traits. Leaders who want to fit in and also stand out, she says, must possess financial acumen; integrity; an ability to envision, build, and maintain alliances; learn; offer perspective; and practice global citizenship.
By themselves, the traits McGarvie describes are hardly ground-breaking. Some may criticize this book for rehashing old management axioms in an all too familiar way. The value of McGarvie's perspectives comes from her efforts to tie each of the 6 traits to a specific by-product which helps leaders both fit in and stand out. Financial acuity, she writes, provides leaders with a key dose of confidence necessary for their jobs. Integrity builds trust. Linkages provide access to new opportunities, both for leaders and for their teams. Learning provides ongoing innovation. Perspective leads to balanced judgment. And finally, global citizenship leads to agility. The heart of McGarvie's book comes from her explanations of the effects of these 6 qualities on a leader's reputation within an organization.
Another helpful quality of this book is its explanation of priorities: in a pinch, should aspiring CEOs fit in first, or stand out? These paths don't always conflict, but when they do, how should the tradeoff be resolved? According to McGarvie, they should fit in before standing out. Hopefully, though, most readers of this book will benefit from its insights, and avoid giving up one or the other for too long. --Peter Han
Book Description
A veteran Fortune 500 CFO and business innovator shares her breakthrough program to tap the leader within
“Blythe McGarvie incites readers to think about the connections between success, ethics, and financial prowess.”
—Steve Ballmer, CEO, Microsoft
During her extensive experience studying effectiveness in business, leadership expert Blythe McGarvie uncovered a vital lesson: successful leaders are systems thinkers. By managing the two forces that power the essential dynamic of business systems, integration (fitting in) and transformation (standing out), managers and executives will generate astonishing results: solutions are created, teamwork grows, change is embraced, and effectiveness is improved and rewarded.
Now, in Fit In, Stand Out, McGarvie presents her breakthrough program that will help you become a more effective leader. She reveals how integration and transformation function as the yin and yang of business, working together and balancing each other to form the two sides of leadership success. By mastering these imperatives through the revolutionary FISO FACTOR, you will become a team player while simultaneously advocating change and fostering long-term growth.
Fit In, Stand Out provides the keys to mastering the six agents of FISO (financial acumen, integrity, alliances, learning, perspective, and global citizenship), and the attitudes, behaviors, and characteristics (ABCs) you need to wield them.
Customer Reviews:
Original and practical.......2007-03-09
The FISO factor is an imaginative way to approach a way to succeed in the corporate world.
Foundational Leadership Book.......2006-07-20
Blythe's book has become the centerpiece of how I fit leadership and personal development into a tight circle - when I look at all the leadership, consulting and other books; they fit into one of the FISO Factor Catalysts. This makes FISO the foundation, the leadership platform as Blythe states, of personal success. I've now recommended this book to over 100 people without hesitation. Life long learning dictates continuing to read new books and developing ones' self and FISO with the six catalysts is the center of the mind map. When you have read your Zig Ziglar and Stephen Covey, sit down with this book as you develop your mission statement and you will be rewarded. But remember, to successfully execute your mission statement, you will need the skills to fit in and stand out - the FISO Factor.
A leadership development strategy for insiders.......2006-06-09
Author Blythe McGarvie presents a thoughtful, intelligent analysis of the paradox of leadership success - the simultaneous needs to "fit in" and "stand out" She teaches the prospective executive how to build a strong platform of leadership, resting firmly on this seemingly contradictory foundation. McGarvie explains that to be accepted and allowed to thrive, you must learn how to integrate or "fit in" to your company's culture and structure. Then, you must also "stand out" by visibly exhibiting your strengths, intelligence and talents, so you can move up the ladder. Drawing on her extensive executive experience, she breaks the "FISO Factor" down into six basic elements including fiscal savvy, honor, perceptiveness, networking, thirst for knowledge and worldwide citizenship. We recommend this well-reasoned, thought-provoking leadership development program to anyone who is searching for the keys to unlock the executive suite.
Values In the Workplace Globally........2006-02-04
Ethical standards and implications can make or break a company today" example, Enron. "In late 1999, several years before the high-profile revelations of corporate misconduct that began emerging in and after 2001," a survey of employee perceptions of organizational and leadership integrity discovered that 76 percent said they had observed violations of the law or company standards in the past twelve months. Clearly, U. S. employees are witnessing ethical and legal misconduct at work. Thus, a crisis in integrity leads directly to a crisis in trust. Integrity is a business imperative.
Prior to the "Scientific Revolution," mysticism was an integral and unquestioned part of human beliefs. The North Star has spiritual and mythical significance. Alternately called the Fire Star and the Chief Star by different groups. Integrity is clearly the Chief Star of today's business leaders because it creates a context for everything they do. Integrity's definition has evolved over the years but today its primary meaning as a "steadfast adherence to strict moral or ethical code" is widely acknowledged. Ethics is a key quality in long-term leadership success.
Globalization is our passport to business opportunity. Corporations exist in an ever-connected global community. Global citizenship enables leaders to transcend geographic boundaries. However, globalization is controversial today, viewed by many as un-American.
Everyone ages, but we all know people who never seem to get old. Sure, they have wrinkles and gray hair, but because they also have a sparkle in their eyes and active, open minds, we tend not to perceive them as "old." How do these people retain their youthful countenance? "Often, it is their interest in the world, their curiosity. They have discovered a wellspring of renewal that drives passion, alertness, and spirit. It is a love of learning." Business cannot hope to prosper in a foreign country, "be it Romania, China, or Peru, without an appreciation for the values, beliefs, social mores, politics, tastes, and fears of the people in that country. Philosophy, history, and literature can provide the access to thoughts and feelings of a culture."
Business is but one aspect of life's experience, hardly distinct or isolated from the environment in which it functions. "Business success depends upon people and therefore upon awareness of politics, social trends, attitudes and values, and a myriad of other expressions of human emotions, fears, drives, and desires. Literature and philosophy are the best sources for appreciating whatever universals might exist among people over time and place. Literature and history allow for a more time sensitive and culturally determined appreciation of the human condition." The author's father obtained his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1969.
In 1865, an Oxford mathematician named Charles Lutwidge Dodson self-published a flight of fancy which has entranced both children and adults ever since. "Writing as Lewis Carrol, Dodson created an excellent parable for all aspiring leaders" by the title, "Alice In Wonderland." Historically, the integrity of corporate leaders has often been questioned. "The Robber Barons of the late 19th century, men such as Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Cornelius and William Vanderbilt, and J. P. Morgan, were accused of building great personal fortunes by unsavory means. Interestingly, the widespread use of the derogatory label dates to the 1930s and the era of the Great Depression, which is often blamed on the manipulations of business leaders or poor government responses. During both world wars, corporate leaders were accussed of profiteering."
She ends with this quote, often attributed to Dale Carnegie: "Success is getting what you want; happiness is wanting what you get." It is her hope that this book helps you find both, in business and in life.

There are important connections between success, business ethics, and financial strengths: connections illustrated in Fit In Stand Out: Mastering The Fiso Factor. Author Blythe McGarvie is a leadership expert who has taught effectiveness for many years: during the course of her teachings she discovered a basic lesson: in order to be a successful leader you must both fit in and stand out. The two are not opposites necessarily, as chapters here demonstrate: McGarvie reveals a FISO Factor program which helps business professionals learn how to achieve both.
