    Book Description

    This exhibition interpreted Georgia's history through such objects as furniture, silver, textiles, paintings, iron work, ceramics, maps, and Native-American artifacts. More than 150 objects created by Georgia craftsmen before the Civil War composed the most comprehensive collection of Georgia-made objects ever assembled. The publication includes descriptions of the development of culture in Georgia, details of Georgia's native-American and decorative arts, and an evaluation of commemorative art in mid-19th-century Georgia. The catalogue of works in the exhibition illustrates the relationship between historical events in Georgia and the quality of arts that emerged from the state during those periods of time.

    Book Description

    "Deeply unpretentious and undistracted by the trendy new aesthetics or technologies, Mr. Shabazz is the best kind of photojournalist: one driven simply by curiosity about other human beings." (Ken Johnson, The New York Times) Once upon a time before crack, inner city communities were blighted by poverty and unemployment—but not by the drug wars that tore families apart, destroying lives with needless violence and mindless addiction. Once upon a time before crack, pride and style were as inseparable as a beatbox and mixtape, or as a pair of shoes and matching purse. Once upon a time before crack, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, working the streets of New York City, capturing the faces and places of an era that have long since disappeared. Best known as hip hop's finest fashion photographer for his blockbuster best-selling monograph, Back in the Days (powerHouse Books, 2001), Shabazz revisited his archive and unearthed an extraordinary collection of never-before-published documentary photographs collected for his third powerHouse Books release, A Time Before Crack. A visual diary of the streets of New York City from the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties, Shabazz's distinctive photographs reveal the families, the poses, and the players who made this age extraordinary.

    5 out of 5 stars Word Up!.......2006-04-13

    Okay...I'm only 30 but I was a little kid during this time period and I grew up right in the Boogie Down Bronx (South Bronx). I remember going to the skate key, seeing my uncles rocking sheep skin coats, addidas with the fat laces, Gazelle glasses. Seeing the birth of the Rap/hip hop game right before my eyes...from Curtis Blow, Luv bug Starski, to Kool Herc. This book will bring back things to your memory that will bring a warm feeling to your heart. This was the best time of my life and I wish I could go back...but now I can by revisting the pages of my life in this book.

    5 out of 5 stars What we're gonna do is go back...way back, back into time.......2005-10-26

    If you were born between 1965 and 1975, this book will take you back to many forgotten memories. It is all at once an ode to fashion, an ode to attitude, and an ode to hip hop culture in its original form.

    Pictured here are the days when the budding hip hop culture was special. Hip hop fashion and style had yet to escape the boundaries of the hood, and here we see ourselves in all our "fresh" glory.

    The Puma sneakers with fat laces. The black goose "bomber" jackets. The sheep dog coats. The safari Kangol caps. And of course the Cazals...in every color. Its all here. This is a trip down memory lane that will surely make you smile.

    Jamel Shabazz was at the right place at the right time with his camera to capture the essence of hip hop culture in its infancy. This is as much a nostalgic book as a historical document to a time long gone. It was a time when being cool didn't necessarily mean being "thug", it was just...cool.

    Shabazz is an absolute master at capturing the raw grittiness of urban life while still showing the fun side. "A Time before Crack" is a necessary testiment to cultural evolution and is a must have for anyone that came of age in the hood in the late seventies and early eighties.

    Book Description

    Rob Grafton and Louise Bright are in love and engaged to be married. When they unexpectedly find themselves unemployed, marriage plans are derailed and they are forced to rethink the direction of their lives. While Louise turns to school, Rob maintains a staunch desire to regain his old job, but when the company is itself shut down and hope is lost, Rob's depression not only keeps him from finding another job, but ends up repelling Louise, as well. Set in contemporary England, Breakfast After Noon is a unique comic-book treat, choosing to focus on the twists and turns of real life rather than convoluted plots or the smoke-and-mirrors of the fantastic.

    5 out of 5 stars the dregs.......2003-06-14

    I purchased this book beacause a friend recommended it to me after I read Alex Robinson's wonderful graphic novel _Box Office Poison_ I enjoyed BOP because the characters seemed very real to me unlike the characters found in Super Hero comic. Breakfast's story deals with a young couple who have been living together for quite awhile but who have never tied the knot. When they are finally ready to enter wedlock they both lose their jobs at a ceramic manufacturer. Whereas Rob becomes obsessed with the idea to get his old job back, Louise views being laid off as an opportunity to do something else with her life. Rob really does not take job hunting seriously and does little more than drink beer, lounge around the house, and play games. Louise goes back to school and takes a course in computers. the two characters drift apart from each other as the book goes on. Drawn in a deceptivelt simple style, Watson's art is very moving with bold sparse lines.

    5 out of 5 stars The comic for non-comics readers.......2003-03-26

    For fans of graphic novels, comics and sequential art, Andi Watson is the real-deal. His use of line, texture and brushstrokes evokes a masterly touch in a medium frequently given to assembly line product and connect-the-dot plotting. One look thru his great graphic novel, "Breakfast After Noon" will make you a fan of his art. Luckily, those that buy the book and read it will also become a fan of Andi the writer.

    His stories have that lived-in feeling and his characters eminate from real life in a way that is all too rare in today's spandex-obseesed comics market. BAN is a particularly English story, sprinkled as it is the British slang and set in an English town reeling from the closing of a local manufacturing plant. The couple caught in the center of the story could be friends of yours, but Watson makes them distinct individuals with their own agendas and desires. This is a slice-of-life story with no urgent plotting or climatic ending. But that doesn't mean that BAN is without suspense or dramatic purpose, but it achieves its meaning and resonance thru character instead of external plot machinations, which is refreshing in a medium so often over-written.

    And Andi's art is a true treasure, and the best part is he keeps getting better with each subsequent series. He's done other excellent work and has a new series coming out for ONI Press where he plans on putting his own unique twist on the world of superheroes.

    BAN is the comic you can read and feel confident passing along to your non-comics reading friend. It's a great book by a great artist.

              Syndicated columnist (and frequent Politically Incorrect panelist) Arianna Huffington takes up political satire in this fictional account of her weekend as a guest in the Clinton White House. As interns scramble to assure her that everything is under control, and Al Gore gathers dust in the basement, Huffington gets her soundest advice from Socks, the First Cat. More than Primary Colors without the names changed, Greetings From the Lincoln Bedroom contains a sustained attack on the campaign finance scandals that have affected both parties and which, in Huffington's view, threaten American democracy at its core.

              Book Description

              In the grand tradition of Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot and Downsize This! comes Arianna Huffington's outrageous and hilarious tour of what really goes on in the White House out of the public eye.

              Welcome to Arianna's excellent adventure:
              On the heels of a small donation made to the Democratic National Committee--the result of a lost bet--she's invited to spend three days, with access as full as an intern's, in the infamous Lincoln Bedroom. Like Alice's exploits through the looking glass, Arianna's weekend in the White House wonderland is increasingly surreal, constantly titillating, and brutally funny as she encounters a parade of curiouser and curiouser surprises, including:

              * The Horndog-in-Chief, Bill Clinton, who lusts after anything that moves--whether it's a zaftig intern in an overstuffed dress or a fat-cat fund-raiser with an overstuffed wallet;

              *  a genial Al Gore stored upright in a basement corner, ready to take over the presidency at a moment's notice--the only time he gets taken upstairs is for fund-raising calls and to have his arms rotated after every thousand calls;

              * James Carville auctioning the assets of the Executive Office--from the President's underwear to the trust of the American people;

              * Maya Angelou, Tipper Gore, Madonna, a giggly intern, and a Greek chorus of breastfeeding mothers joining Hillary Clinton at a tea party;

              * a very interactive television that broadcasts the wildest political programming ever seen;

              * an outrageous state dinner for the Chinese President that's closed to the media--and for good reason; and

              * a talking cat who is a better-placed "Deep Throat" than Woodward or that Dustin Hoffman guy ever dreamed of.

              Of course the star of this backstage tour is Bill Clinton himself. He and his sometime sidekick and best supporting actor Newt Gingrich reach an epoch-making bipartisan consensus that oral sex is not adultery. The President is found horsetrading in a hot tub, soul-searching during a midnight raid of the snack pantry, and otherwise devising new ways to feed his financial, carnal, and altogether insatiable appetites. And as a reminder of just how far politics and leadership have strayed, there's even a visit from the remarkably well-preserved Abraham Lincoln himself.

              In the sharpest political satire since the Contract with America, Arianna Huffington takes off the gloves as she takes on the dishonesty and malfeasance of politicians of all stripes, leading us on a mind-bending tour through the White House looking glass.

              Customer Reviews:

              2 out of 5 stars 2-dimensional.......2003-07-15

              Hardly an insightful satire, it is rather one continuous repetitive republican joke about how gore is stiff, janet has a firm handshake, and clinton chases women - as if that was everything that defined these people. I can take a good satire - just make it, at least, interesting.

              2 out of 5 stars Long Insider Joke.......2003-06-02

              It's like reading a Dilbert cartoon if you've never experienced corporate life - only it goes on much longer. Be aware that the entire book consists of an imaginary trip by the Republican author to a Democratic White House. Don't expect any facts or insights. Even as a Republican, I found the humor to be cloying and self-congratulatory. My impression of this book is: what a complete waste of intellect and energy. It's a really bad reflection on the Republican party.

              1 out of 5 stars Decidedly unSwiftian Blunt-Edged Satire.......1999-05-06

              I bought this book thinking it would be an insider's view of the 1994 Senate campaign in California, when Mike Huffington, Arianna's ex-husband, committed $26 million of his own millionaire money to try to defeat incumbent Dianne Fienstein. Huffington lost and his political career has gone nowhere since. Not only that, but he has come out of the closet and declared himself openly gay. And recently he admitted to a journalist that he was not the conservative he made himself (she -- Arianna -- made himself?) out to be, but was actually a liberal. I'd like to get the view from that bedroom! But instead this book is a tepid collection of tongue-in-cheek dull satire. One of these days Arianna Huffington, who is a good writer and is capable of being quite thoughtful, will tell us what it was like to stage-manage a gay liberal's campaign for senate on the Republican ticket. Well, maybe she won't tell us. But I, for one, would love to hear that story, and I'm sorry I bought the wrong book.

              3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Clever.......1998-12-24

              In her countless appearances on the msnbc and cnbc babble shows, Huffington usually comes across as a thick-accented foriegner with a simple-minded sense of humor and a deluded sense of patriotism. But in her book "tales from the Lincoln Bedroom", Huffington displays a surprising knack for sophisticated satire and her observations of the current political scene are telling. It is hard to believe that this thick-accented, English-as-a-second-language foriegner could have written such a clever piece of non-fiction on her own. The passages in which she makes fun of the physical appearance of administration members Robert Riech, Donna Shalala and Janet Reno are especially amusing. To add a sense of balance to the book, it would have been advisable to make fun of how she, herself, drove her ex-husband to homosexuality. But on the whole, I must say, Bravo, Arianna!

              5 out of 5 stars an amusing account of the Lincoln Bedroom.......1998-09-07

              I'm Arianna's biggest fan. She has an acerbic wit and I couldn't put the book down. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to read some humorous revelations about politics. I enjoy Arianna because she speaks her mind and isn't afraid to tell it like it is.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars great reference guide on film music.......2005-02-14

                For one who collects, listens and enjoys film music, this tome is the best available in the market. It is a wonderfully comprehensive reference guide to the best film scores from the early twenties up to almost the nineties. Eminent composers are given adequate biographies. The salient highlights of the scores are reviewed by decade. The golden age of hollywood is represented by Korngold, Steiner, Tiomkin, Newman, Waxman. One can actually feel the development of film music techniques from the silents to the talkies and the sophistication of today`s electronic scores. The rise, decline and revival of this art form is well documented and one can compare different periods in terms of orchestration, styles, audience tastes and composer standards. The composer, arranger, conductor, songwriter were sometimes one person for example, Alfred Newman. The death of the studio system also spelt the end of the road for studio orchestras which employed hundreds of emigrants from Europe. Also, the predominance of Jewish composers and musicians is keenly felt even today. A good investment for any film music lover, it will pay dividends many times over. High readable and highly recommended.

                      Book Description

                      This is an English translation of Tutor for Playing the Flute (1791) by Johann George Tromlitz. The most explicit of the eighteenth-century tutors for flute-playing, it now serves as a record of instrumental practice as well as a useful guide to the performance of German classical music. The Tutor covers all aspects of flute playing, including intonation, articulation, flute maintenance, posture and breathing, dynamics, ornaments, musical style, cadenzas, and the construction of the flute. This edition will be an indispensable manual for players of baroque and modern flutes, and the information it contains will be invaluable for all musicians, students, and specialists interested in the historically informed performance of German classical music. The text is annotated with critical notes and all of the original music examples are newly printed in modern notation. The volume also contains a fingering chart and a historical introduction.

                      2 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment.......2006-07-10

                      This book did not deliver what I wanted at all. The summary of the book stated that it was supposed to give ideas for GM's to write their own adventures. However I would have liked some ideas and stats on the items that Dunkelzhan handed out in his will so I would know what my players were up against.

                      The will was the only good thing in the book and was NOT worth the money I paid for this book.

                      If you are a Shadowrun GM or a player, do yourself a favor and pass this one up since you can download the will from their website for free.

                      5 out of 5 stars the Big D's will: why the world went nuts in 2057/2058.......2002-04-12

                      In _Super Tuesday_, Dunkelzahn (the only great dragon to cultivate a popular public image) became a serious candidate for the presidency of the UCAS. This book opens with the event that shaped so much of later Shadowrun history - Dunkelzahn's assassination on the night of his inauguration.

                      As with the other really great Shadowrun sourcebooks, this volume is organized as an electronic document from the fictional Shadowrun world, as posted at that spiritual home of shadowrunners everywhere: Shadowland. Captain Chaos (sysadmin extraordinaire) begins by posting nearly raw coverage of the assassination, then Shadowland chat (some in the form of articles by major shadowrunners like the Chromed Accountant) interspersed with backtalk, rumors, and on-line quarrels from the various folk who post to Shadowland. Lots of ideas for GMs here.

                      First, of course, there's the death itself, and the who-killed-Dunkelzahn theories as the murder continues to go unsolved. The primary focus of this book, though, is Dunkelzahn's last will and testament (Captain Chaos includes the full text of the bequests).

                      The Big D left large chunks of nuyen to found various foundations and study groups, the entire estate being administered by the new Draco Foundation under Nadia Daviar, who's gone from the Big D's mouthpiece to one of the most powerful women on the planet. The individual bequests, though, leave a lot of room for speculation and for adventures. (On occasion, the purpose of a bequest is made clear by later events; this was still happening as of the release of _Year of the Comet_, so it's still to one's advantage to get a copy of this book just to get the text of the will.)

                      Many of the bequests could give rise to adventures either to protect an item in transit from the Draco Foundation to the new owner (or to acquire it), such as the undiscovered da Vinci "Seraphim". Some items offer even more scope, having unspecified properties, such as the dagger Wyrmtooth (to his security advisor) or the Ring Ouroboros (to Ryumo).

                      Some bequests, of course, are famous: the Big D owned HUGE blocks of stock in various competing AAA megacorps through various shell companies - enough to change the balance of power in various boardrooms across the world now that the secret's out. The most notorious (at least, up to the present) gave the chief of internal security of a AAA megacorp 4 million shares and an accompanying seat on the board of directors - but of *another* AAA megacorp, a blood enemy. Other bequests include bounties on toxic shamans and practitioners of blood magic, with particular reference to Aztlan.

                      And, of course, there are the conditional bequests, e.g. "to the first party to find my lair in the Caucasus Mountains".

                      Heck, the will alone is worth the purchase price. It's followed with postings from various runners who've gotten involved with the bequests, one way and another, and the dirt they've dug up on some of the more mysterious items. (Not just outlines for how an adventure based on a bequest might be designed, but a good read.)

                      5 out of 5 stars Oh boy, it's better than Christmas!.......1997-07-01

                      The Big "D" is dead, and he's left a will. This book sets in motion events that will guide the world of Shadowrun for years to come. As well as ahving a chapter concerning the events of Dunkelzhan's death, it has a transcript of his will (courtesy of Captian Chaos, as always). With over 200 separate entries for GM's and player alike to use, this sourcebook is unlike any other FASA has put out. It allows the PC's to be active an go out after the missions they want, instead of waiting around for Mr. Johnson to call. A must have for anyone playing Shadowrun

                      5 out of 5 stars SPSS 13 Student version.......2006-11-03

                      I have tried for years a lot of demo, free and shareware related to statistics, econometric and data analysis software. It was good, tired, and finaly I choose SPSS, because has excelent tools, options and interfase to user. Not PC crashes, no unknown format files. If you no not have enough money, don't waste time and money, use SPSS Student version.

                      4 out of 5 stars Perfect for small projects!.......2006-07-08

                      Note: SPSS 13.0 for Windows Student Version cannot open data files containing more than 50 variables or 1,500 cases. Having said that, if you have less than 50 variables and 1,500 cases to deal with then this is the software for you. It came with a (brief) 227-page users guide that was pretty comprehensive all by itself. Order the SPSS 13.0 Guide to Data Analysis to go with it, and you have just about everything you need to fiddle with and learn the basics of statistical analysis.

                      4 out of 5 stars Excellent for SPSS and statistics students.......2006-03-10

                      I have used this product in a research methods class and found it to perform quite well. While it may not have all the features of the full SPSS package it is more than adequate and does not require the student to pay the hefty fee of the full version.

                      1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......2006-03-02

                      Beware - if you buy the student version it is not big enough to run the files necessary that you work on in class. Nowhere did it indicate on the Amazon site that it had limits of file size. Wouldn't one assume that if you are selling a "student" verson, that it will be able to run your school files? Don't buy it if you are a college student and need this software to complete your projects. I wasted $80 plus dollars. Didn't learn of its limitations until AFTER I loaded it, and when it wouldn't work found the limitation statement in the manual. Very disappointed.

                      5 out of 5 stars If your Statistics Class text uses SPSS and did not include it.......2005-12-18

                      SPSS Student is a dremendous value: over 75% off the retail version and nearly as powerful. It is limited, but is more than adequate for most cases you will encounter in class.
                      If you need a more advanced package, get SPSS Career Builder or SPSS Graduate Pack -- they include the full version of SPSS.
